My spouse and I decided to try Agnes & Sherman for brunch after reading that it had earned the No. 12 spot on Yelp's Best New Restaurants of 2026 list. Being recognized among the 25 best new restaurants in the country certainly caught our attention, and we were curious to discover what made this Houston restaurant so special. We arrived with high expectations, and I can confidently say that the experience did not disappoint. The first thing that stood out wasn't the food, but the people and the atmosphere. From the moment we walked through the door until we left, the hospitality was extraordinary. Our server, Jorge, was wonderful, but what truly impressed us was how that same level of warmth, professionalism, and attentiveness extended to the entire staff. Everyone made us feel genuinely welcome, something that speaks volumes about the restaurant's commitment to hospitality. The atmosphere complemented the experience perfectly. The restaurant had a lively, welcoming energy, with great music playing at just the right volume, loud enough to enjoy but never interfering with conversation. We started with the Savory Scallion Waffle with Fried Orange Chicken, and what an incredible combination of flavors! The chicken was cooked to perfection, with a beautifully crispy exterior that reminded me of traditional Southern fried chicken. But what really elevated the dish was the orange sauce. Its sweet and tangy character complemented the savory chicken beautifully, creating a combination that felt both familiar and surprisingly different. The scallion waffle was equally impressive. It had everything a properly prepared waffle should have: a lightly crispy, golden exterior, a soft and tender interior, and plenty of flavor. What made the dish exceptional was the perfect balance between savory and sweet. The richness of the fried chicken, the sweetness and acidity of the orange sauce, and the savory notes of the waffle worked together in complete harmony. Nothing overpowered anything else. Every component complemented the others, making this a truly memorable interpretation of chicken and waffles. Next came the Chilled Noodles, a dish that immediately caught our attention because, unlike the noodle dishes we're accustomed to, these were served cold. It was an interesting change, but one that worked beautifully. The flavors were excellent, delivering everything you would expect from a great noodle dish, with the ginger and scallion adding a wonderful savory character. However, what really stood out to both of us were the pieces of pickled shiitake mushrooms. Their earthy, rich flavor, combined with a subtle tanginess, added an unexpected dimension to the noodles. It's amazing how one ingredient can elevate an entire dish, and in this case, the mushrooms did exactly that. What initially seemed like an unusual choice turned into another pleasant surprise. Of course, no brunch would be complete without a couple of good cocktails, so we ordered a Mimosa and a Bloody Mary. Both were very good, but the Mimosa particularly stood out. It was well prepared, refreshing, and had a generous pour of alcohol. They certainly didn't skimp on the champagne! It had just the right balance of flavor and strength, making it clear that Agnes & Sherman takes its cocktails just as seriously as its food. A great complement to an already excellent brunch. Just when we thought we had experienced all the culinary surprises of the afternoon, dessert arrived. We ordered the Pandan Nice Cream Sundae, and this was probably our most unexpected discovery. Nice cream is a plant-based alternative to traditional ice cream, and I wasn't entirely sure what to expect from a vegan frozen dessert. To our surprise, it was incredibly flavorful, wonderfully light, and refreshing. The pandan brought a delicate, distinctive flavor that made the dessert feel different from a traditional ice cream sundae. It was satisfying without feeling heavy or overly rich, making it the perfect way to finish brunch. Definitely a pleasant surprise and something we would happily order again. The restaurant was packed during brunch, so I would strongly recommend making a reservation in advance. Also, be prepared for a little challenge when it comes to parking. It's cool to have these Asian twists to western food but nothing really wowed me. Even tho it's popular I'd say pass on the chicken and waffles. Came here for brunch and they have a unique menu that puts an Asian spin to some classic dishes. A dish I will never stop raving about is the scallion waffle. You can add the orange chicken for $10 and honestly, worth because it's crunchy, sweet, and adds a nice protein component to the waffle. They were pretty short-staffed when I arrived - I noticed quite a few patrons lining up before a staff member helped them get their seats. We had a bit of a wait as well. The restaurant looked the same - spacious with a variety of seating options and a cute bar in the corner. Once we were seated we were excited to order! We opted to share a few items: the savory scallion waffle, the shrimp toast, and the Vietnamese beef dip. We ordered their half wedge salad, cheeseburger fried rice, a dou milkshake but it was more of a drink, bamboo, martini, savory, scallion, waffles, and egg foo young. The wedge salad was interesting, it's like if you used eastern ingredients to re-create the same western dish. Please note, my only experience here is Sunday Brunch. We were immediately greeted and seated by the friendly and professional staff. The restaurant has a sunny and bright atmosphere with plenty of room. I started with a well prepared Bloody Mary. I ordered the Char Siu Eggs Benedict and my wife ordered the Orange Chicken and Waffles. In a faster than expected time, my wife was served her meal. I believe this is where things started to go wrong. There was a slight look of confusion from the person who dropped off my wife's order. A little more than five minutes later my food arrived. It was evident from the first bite that this was a panic quick fire order. The bread was supposed to be toasted but one had no brown marks and the other had a scant amount. Because of this the bread was bland, cold, and somewhat dry. As this was the foundation for everything on top, the whole dish was bland and disappointing. The poached egg was cooked perfectly but the hollandaise lacked any depth of flavor. The standout was the Bean-offee pie. A great take on a classic banoffee pie. This had the perfect balance of sweet to savory and was absolutely delicious. I'm sure that the namesakes of this restaurant would be disappointed that the kitchen rushed an order and sent out a dish that wasn't prepared properly. Finally had the chance to check out this new Asian American diner! What a interesting take! Had their savory scallion waffle with sambal honey butter, one of their most popular items and it did not disappoint! A great mix of savory with a hint of sweetness to it. My brother and I loved it. The Taiwanese Disco Fries didn't hit the mark. It was missing the crunch and all the goobers on it distracted from the fries which were far too thin. The Jian-BLT was cool because in essence - it was just a classically good BLT but wrapped in an egg. I kinda wanted to have something dip it in but that's just me. I walked in at 1:45. I was seated promptly and pleasantly. My husband and I took his family here to eat after Christmas and had a wonderful time. We made a reservation the night before for lunch. We initially made a reservation for 5, but they were able to accommodate and increase our reservation to 6. He was very honest with recommendations and very patient as we tried to figure out what to order. It did take some time to get water refills and to get our check at the end, but otherwise, it was a great experience. The food is so good! A great fusion spin on Asian cuisine. We came here for New Year's Eve and enjoyed it. For a starter we had the cornbread and ham, the cornbread and butter was good but we both didn't care for the ham. For drinks, we both had the El Diablo and liked it. For entrees, we had the crispy shrimp, I had the egg foo young, and my fiancée had the steak frites. We loved the shrimp, I was smitten with the egg foo young (crawfish and gumbo are my favorite foods), and he liked his steak. Went to Agnes and Sherman for dinner with some friends on a Saturday evening. You definitely want to make reservations as it's busy on a weekend! The staff was really nice, and offered many recommendations. We started off with the scallion waffle and the Taiwanese disco fries. The waffle was good, but the disco fries were definitely the hit for appetizers. As for mains we shared the egg foo young, Engsu's chicken, and the steak frites. All were really good, but I'd have to say the chicken was probably my favorite. Overall I had a very positive experience and would definitely return! read more

I'd been wanting to checkout this Asian American owned establishment that sits where Shade, and later, Alice Blue, once did. The decor is bright, airy, and carries a nice balance between simple and modern with a diner vibe. Parking is available along the street and nearby open surface lots. Upon walking in the brunch reservation was confirmed and our party was sat within five minutes of the table being cleared. Food & Drink - 5* This is a family dining concept where multiple dishes can be ordered for sharing. And wow, there's so many items you will want to try but not have the appetite for! The cheeseburger fried rice is on another level delicious, we all agreed this could be a singular item we would all exclusively have if given the chance. The Kim-chilaquiles is a nice twist on the traditional dish. There was a small portion of egg that was not cooked, but other than no complaints and it's a very shareable dish. For a dessert go with the pandan French toast or a scoop of pandan ice cream. For drinks, the Bloody Mary was interesting, not as traditional as one would expect in terms of looks or mouthfeel with a thicker tomato juice, but it has a nice kick to it. Very enjoyable over the course of our entire meal. Service - 4.5* From the time we walked in to when we left, we were never short on anything. We never ran out of water or waited too long between dishes arriving. The drinks took a little longer than expected, but I chalk this up to a heavy brunch crowd. It was absolutely packed when we arrived. Cost - 5* Subjective as I always say, but when one considers the quality, the portion, and the service - it's worth the price. We all walked away fully satisfied. Overall - 4.75* I'm glad to say that owners Chef Nick Wong and Lisa Lee are carrying the torch of yet another great spot in this part of town. This spot is small and intimate, which makes for a great dining experience right from the start. The food was excellent and genuinely unique -- not the kind of dishes you can find just anywhere. We had a waffle for dinner (yes, and it worked), along with a fried rice that was far from typical: cheeseburger fried rice, and it was fantastic. The steak frites was also very good, and the shoestring fries were some of the best I've had in a long time. Overall, every dish impressed. Service was great as well once we were seated. Our waiter really took the time to understand our preferences and recommended cocktails with creative twists on the ingredients, which we loved. The only minor downside is how close some of the tables are to each other. I'm not a big fan of the wall-lined tables with a shared bench where it feels like you're practically sitting with your neighbors. That said, I didn't deduct a star since we were seated at a table that didn't have that issue. Would definitely recommend and would happily return. read more

This place is really over-hyped, and I'm sad to say that. We made some reservations for 2 for a Sunday night. The area in the heights is really nice - parking is easy, lots of nice places to walk around. Despite it being easy to get a reservation a few hours before, the place was busy! In fact, we had to wait 20min past our reservation time for a table to open up. Service was quick after that. Cocktails were good - I particularly liked the Big Red Bean - clarified + bourbon-- sign me up! Food itself was okay - the specialties recommended were the waffle, crab rangoon, egg foo young, cheeseburger fried rice. We ended up getting: Savory scallion waffle: 4/5 - honestly, just tasted like a waffle and butter, which is good in itself. Wish the scallions were more prominent. Chilled cucumbers: 4/5 - these were pretty basic, but good - chilled cucumbers with chili oil. Watch out - there's some peppercorn in there, so your mouth might tingle a bit. Egg foo young: 3/5 - this was okay. It's unique with the crawfish, but it was just okay. We had to douse it in some Cajun hot sauce that they brought it out with for some flavor. Cheeseburger fried rice: 2/5 - maybe we should have looked up pictures before we ordered this - we were a bit disgusted when we saw the dish, and it tasted about how it looked. It basically looks like somewhat blended a cheeseburger and served it. Definitely not something I expected at a nicer restaurant. It tasted like a ground up cheeseburger... Pandan sundae: 3/5 - this was okay, but realistically based on the proportions should be called coconut whipped cream with a bit of pandan ice cream - it was 75% whipped cream, 25% ice cream. The flavors were good otherwise. I'm surprised by the attention this restaurant has received, it was an overall underwhelming experience- we'll likely not be back. read more

Had high hopes going into A&S, but sadly I was disappointed. Service was great, friendly staff, but my review is based mostly on the food. The deconstructed crab wonton was slightly weird in my opinion...and the wonton crisps seemed to have been cooked in old oil and the color was super dark...didn't taste fresh...and the savory scallion waffle was underwhelming too! The waffle tasted like a regular waffle and the honey butter had very little sambal - it was really just honey butter! Then we ordered the chilled cucumbers for $10 - and while it was fresh and crispy...it wasn't worth $10!! I could make this at home and it wasn't memorable! Then we ordered the beef chow fun and it was so salty we had to send it back... A&S has perched itself on W 19th street in the heart of the heights, previously housed by Alice Blue! They're bringing an open concept kitchen, but for me, it didn't really carry a "diner" feel upon walking into the restaurant....the ambiance just felt like a casual restaurant but not truly embracing a "diner" experience. read more

Surprisingly there is adequate amount of parking if you look around (I usually think it's impossible to find something in the Heights area). Yum! Enjoyed this place from start to finish. It is decorated very tastefully and beautifully- we really loved the design. The story about the owners parents was really lovely too. We loved the drinks as well- we got the el Diablo and the bamboo martini. Both were absolutely delicious! Very complex flavors. For dinner we started with the savory scallion waffle which was really delicious! It was very airy and light and tasted more like bread than a waffle. The butter on it was so unique and amazing! Next we had the fajita chow fun, which I really enjoyed. It was a little spicy and the noodles had a wonderful flavor. Lastly we had the rice cakes. This was probably my least favorite hoenstly, not bad but it was very heavy on the rice flavor and I feel like it overpowered the rest of the dish. Overall though, everything was amazing!
