Mildly frustrating. However I had patience. The server JESUS acted like he didn't like his job. We went in for my cousins birthday on Saturday , reservations at 630. I didn't want to order off the restaurant week menu so I ordered off the regular. My cousin and his friend ordered off the restaurant week menu. I was last to order and then Jesus goes "you don't want a salad or anything?" I said no thank you. Then he goes "but every body else is going to be eating and you're not." I said I understand and he chuckles and says "ok"Like mf I know what I'm ordering smh ‍. Then he says at the end of the meal that he cannot bring out the dessert for my cousins birthday because he already ordered off the restaurant week menu. I had a lovely meal here. I stopped by for a group dinner with a preset menu. I opted for the barbacoa as my entree with tres leches for dessert. The barbacoa came out piping hot wrapped in a green leaf and it paired so well with the delicious bean dip and other toppings. The meat was seasoned so deliciously and I thoroughly enjoyed making my tacos. It was a large amount of food and I ended up taking some home. The tres leches was lovely as well and I could only eat half as I was very full by then. It was soft and so milky, just the way I like it. Our servers were very prompt, kind, and thoughtful throughout the meal. I've been here once before for happy hour and had a similar experience with the excellent staff. It's a good place to eat in Montrose. It's a loud so not the best place for a quiet evening. Food is flavorful. Portions are ok. Employees are nice. Atmosphere is fun. My only issue is the last time we were there the employees were rushing us. It was no where near closing time. Although we were done eating, we were all consistently ordering cocktails. They tried to clear my plate that was no where near done. Then minutes later asked to package my food. And they kept coming back, trying to rush us to leave, but we were still ordering margaritas. For years I have heard about brunch at Hugo's, but have yet to sample it myself. So for our 2-year anniversary we decided to come out and knock it off our list. We put in a reservation for Sunday afternoon, and the place was hoppin'. The savory brunch buffet was quite to the affair with a really long bar. And they also had a second dessert buffet bar as well. They did an excellent job of replacing things that went fast. There was so much on this buffet that I didn't even get to try everything before I was full. That's a yay for their selection, and it's also a yay that I don't eat as much as I used to.#winning. We also had a cocktail each with brunch, but those weren't that. Good to be honest. She had a mezcal mango drink that just didn't hit well, and I had their special margarita. That was very tasty but not worth the excessive price when there were $10 options available. The service here was impeccable. Our wait staff came through each time we were up to snag our plates, and check on our water, and make sure we were taken care of throughout. They also put out a nice message about our anniversary on the table when we arrived, and provided us a dessert on the house specifically for our occasion as well. Booked a reservation for the Sunday brunch to celebrate Valentine's. I was interested to try their Mexican approach to brunch. The buffet had a nice variety of savory options including: mini quesabirria tacos, lamb roast, carnitas, chips and salsa, various vegetables and salad, enchiladas, tamales, ceviche, etc. My favorites were honestly the Brussels sprouts and the scalloped potato which doesn't really make me want to come back. The quesabirria tacos and poblano egg was nice too. My deal is, how do you mess up the Mexican rice?? It was wet and undercooked. If you can't get the rice right, you're cooked in my opinion. A lot of the food was room temp. The area where the food is served is a little cramped. The service was good. They had some live music going which was pleasant. Hugo's is a Houston staple that always hits the spot. We made a last-minute reservation for Houston Restaurant Weeks and were glad we did. They offer three HRW menus: seafood-focused, meat-focused, and vegetarian. Our table tried everything except the vegetarian, which is actually the one I went for, along with the optional cocktail pairing. At $33 for three thoughtfully crafted drinks, it is a steal. The Menú Nuestro Estilo was well-balanced and full of flavor. The squash blossom soup and quesadilla were delicate and comforting. The braised oxtail empanadas with cilantro aioli were rich and paired perfectly with the Paloma de Guayaba, which was bright and fruity with just the right tartness. For the main course, the grass-fed Black Angus skirt steak with poblano peppers, onions, arroz a la Mexicana, and refritos was tender and flavorful. Mine came out a little undercooked, but the wait staff was quick and receptive when I sent it back. I skipped the accompanying tortillas this time, but the fresh-made corn tortillas here are always a hit. It paired beautifully with the Un Día con Sandía, a smoky and refreshing mezcal and watermelon cocktail. Dessert was a decadent duo of milk and dark chocolate cake with pistachio and cherry compote, rounded out by the Carajillo Oaxaqueño, a coffee dessert cocktail with a mezcal twist. By the end, I was completely stuffed. The best part of Houston Restaurant Weeks is knowing your night out also supports the Houston Food Bank, and Hugo's makes it easy to enjoy a great meal while giving back. It's been a very long time since I've written a review. So I'll be starting with my Houston favorites. My late wife and I came here for 15 years at least. I still come, at least once a week and sit at the bar. What sets Hugo's apart is their service. Greeted with a smile and handshake/fist bump every time. They give you a "welcome home" feel, which is exactly what you want when you go out to dinner, esp solo. As for the food and drinks, it's always reliable. When I was younger, we'd opt for the Lechon and Taquitos. Now, I get the fresh fish of the day w/ cauliflower, habanero, and guac. If you are looking to be healthy, this is the place. You can say no oil and get a high protein, high fiber dinner no problem. My favorite spirit (by far) is Mezcal. I've been drinking this far before it became popular. Who made it mainstream? Bobby Flay did way back in the day. Think Mesa Grill at Caesars Palace back in 2012. Come for the consistent food and drinks, return for the service. My friends and I made a dinner reservation at Hugo's for the 4th of July and overall had an amazing experience. I valeted due to the lack of street parking which is complimentary (at least when I went). My group was already seated so I joined them and our waiter came by to check in and ask if I was ready within 5 min of my arrival. I ended up splitting 2 dishes with my friend (the enchiladas of the day - chicken with a tomatillo sauce and the Chamorro de puerco) as well as a glass of prosecco. The food was 10/10, both dishes were delicious and so was the drink. It came out pretty quickly as well. Our server gave us great service and helped us split the check as well. Overall, this was a great first experience at Hugo's. The decor is really beautiful inside, bathrooms were clean and the lighting is dim which is great for a date night. I'd highly recommend others giving this place a try and my next visit will be for the Sunday Buffet that I have heard about! read more

It's been over 15 years since the last time I dined at Hugo's. I expected that the service, food, and experience would have slipped a bit during this time. I'm happy to say that I was wrong. If anything, the entire experience has improved which is hard to believe. I started with a fantastic Gin and Tonic that had additional aromatics added and was delicious. This was my first time visiting and got to experience the Valentine's Day dinner menu. Everything was phenomenal but the best thing that I had was definitely the Chamorro de Borrego (lamb) - the meat was so soft, the mole on it was great, and the scalloped potatoes and roasted potatoes were the perfect touch. My favorite drink of the night was the Sangre Azteca, it paired great with the entire menu although I didn't get the optional drink pairing. As expected, the service was attentive and we were constantly checked on to make sure we had everything that we needed. They had some live music this night that really elevated the ambiance. I was looking for a dining option on my way home while I waited out a storm. Typical Houston! It was surprisingly hard to find a place open around 3:30pm! Most of the places on my bookmarks to try opened at 5pm. I didn't want to wait around that long I was hungry! I'm was so happy to see Hugo's was open and participating in restaurant week. Done! They have a valet lot which was safe and monitored. I was able to park right in front which was nice bc I had luggage in my car I was worried about leaving. Walk ins were a breeze and I was seated immediately. I chose the restaurant week menu so I could try a variety. I'm a seafood girl so I got the "between the waves" menu. Everything was fantastic! Miriam was my server and she was so kind, knowledgeable and attentive. I can't think of one thing I would change, this place is 5 stars! Appetizer was sopa y quesadilla de flor de calabaza. Great tasting soup and nice mini quesadilla. I think it would I have been ever better with hot sauce. Next was the octopus. I died and went to heaven. Perfectly grilled with char and tasty. I would order this again and again. Seabass was the catch of the day which is my favorite fish. Another knock out of the park. Amazing. Last course was the cheesecake de queso crema. I don't even like cheesecake but this was so tasty. Lastly I ordered some chips and salsa to go for my husband and they gave me three different kinds of salsa and the black refried beans. I came here with my friend over the weekend. Thankfully, the reservation was made prior to coming since when we came, they were packed. I had their tostadas de camarones and aguachile de atun. The seafood was incredibly fresh. The size was appropriate to the cost. The tostadas were nicely piled with shrimp and queso. It was perfectly balanced. The aguachile de atún was also very tasteful. I think next time, I will mix it before eating, as the mango, papaya, and blood orange were in the center of the tuna. The service was great. We took our time with eating and did not feel rushed at any point. They also had a nice selection of their dessert, but unfortunately, I was too full by that point. I also wanted to try their mole as I was told by my friends it is one of the few places in Houston to get a good mole, but I will have to try that at another time. I can confidently say that this is one of THE best brunches in Houston. We had an out-of-town visitor, so with the summer heat limiting our options on things to do, brunch at Hugo's was a must. We made a reservation for a group of 6 for opening time at 10:00am. Sunday brunch buffet is $45 per person. I had to force myself to wake up extra early so that I could work up appetite for the amount I strived to eat. Parking is (complimentary) valet only, unless you decide to park on the surrounding streets. Just pay attention to the signs because this is Montrose. The parking attendants were friendly and quick. Upon checking in, we were immediately seated near the buffet. Our server brought us waters immediately and took our drink orders. My partner and I ordered a mimosa carafe - at $28, I'd say this is comparable to other restaurants for the amount you get. For the fanciness of the restaurant here, I'd call it a steal. We quickly proceeded to the buffet. Pro-tip: make sure you make it around both sides of the buffet, because they place different items and variations on each side of the buffet line. I've been here for brunch multiple times, and I've noticed that they seasonally rotate out the food items. I could only make it through two plates. While it was two big plates, I have done three before so there was a brief moment of self-disappointment. Chilaquiles is a classic - I know they are mass-producing for the buffet, so tortilla chips are a little soggier than I would like. Tamales are also a must - they have bean & cheese on one side and chicken on the other. The brisket was fork-tender and savory. And the pork carnitas were tasty. These meats paired well with a small helping of brussel sprouts. The mini birria taco was a treat; perfect serving size so that I could have room for other things. I love the crispy tortilla chips with red & green salsas; I just get the chips plain and use them to sop up extra sauce on my plate from the other foods. One thing that was new here was the huevos divorciados. The times I've had this at other restaurants, it is just eggs with red salsa on one side and green salsa on the other side. Here, they put all of that top of a crispy tostada, with some beef sandwiched in between. Did I say that tostada was CRISPY? This was my favorite of the meal, hands down. While I barely had the stomach room to try everything I wanted at least once, these I had to get twice. Also, I am not a huge fan of beans, but the black beans here were AMAZING. They must have been cooked in fat or the like, because there was so much more to these than simply bean flavor. The desserts were also to die for. My favorites were the Mexican hot chocolate, mini churros, and tres leches. I always look forward to the hot chocolate when brunching here - as eager as I am for winter, I know I need to learn to make this at home for cold nights! Service was stellar. Our server always made sure our mimosas were filled, and would regularly come by the table to bring us new silverware and fold our cloth napkins if we stepped away from the table. She was super friendly and exemplifies the top-notch service you'll find at Hugo's restaurants. Hugo's for brunch is always a treat. I like to make the rotation between here, Xochi, Caracol, and URBE, but Hugo's is the best of the four, in my opinion. Our guest absolutely loved her food and the overall experience. This was the second time I went to Hugo's, with the first being during HRW last year. Both times the service was impeccable. The interior of the restaurant was very beautifully decorated and I appreciated that our server placed my family and I in an area that wasn't too crowded. I had the duck and thought it was very tasty. The texture of the crispy exterior, coupled with the richness of the mole sauce really created an enjoyable meal. I also sampled the steak from my family member, and agree that it was cooked perfectly. During non happy hour, the food is pretty expensive and may not be worth it to some even though the flavor is great. Although the food was exceptional, I feel like the atmosphere could have been a bit better. It was nice inside but for the price point, I feel that it could have been nicer. Overall, if food is your main concern, definitely come here. If the atmosphere is most important, you may want to go other places. read more

Fantastic! This was my first time in Houston traveling for work. Our team ate here our first night for dinner. The service is excellent. The ambience is great. And the food was fantastic. Our group ordered a handful of the crudos and small plates to start-- the empanadas and ceviche were a hit! The empanadas were a good mix of sweet and salty and the ceviche was so tasty. Also, not pictured, but highly recommend, is the yellowtail -- it was excellent. Our waiter suggested the special for the day, the filet mignon, which several of us ordered, and we were not disappointed. Cooked to perfection and the potatoes were AMAZING-- reason enough to order the special! Would highly recommend for a corporate setting or dinner date. I had a group dinner for my birthday and decided to check out Hugo's during restaurant week. Overall we had a great time and the food was good. A few of us ordered from the Pre Fixe menu while others off the main menu. I ordered the MENÚ NUESTRO ESTILO (OUR STYLE) and I give it a 7/8 out of 10. The first two courses were great, however my main entree (flank steak) was tough and I couldn't cut into it. They brought me another one but it was also tough. I think it was the cut of meat. Everything else on the plate was good however. Prior to selecting Hugo's I had a couple of friends that were worried that the food wouldn't be good based on past visits from years ago so I was a little nervous. The bad reviews were also very consistent but I felt like for every bad review there were 5 good reviews so I took a chance. I'm glad I did because it really was a good meal. I went to Hugo's for a friend's wedding reception dinner and had a great time! The service was overall attentive, except for water refills, and they had us in a private room for the celebration. The ambiance was fun, and while our room was well lit, the regular dining area was a bit dark. We tried several items: - taquitos de pollo: chicken taquitos, a little dry but came with tasty guacamole - lechon: suckling pig with crispy skin, came with just enough for four small tacos, also had a spicy habanero salsa - molotes de platano: plantain turnovers, slightly sweet, pretty fluffy, would have been better with a yummy sauce, came with a carrot (?) mash on the side - callo de hacha: pan seared scallops over sweet cornbread, the scallops were so tender and yummy, the cornbread was good but wanted the outside to be a little crispier - carnitas: slow cooked pork, seemed like the same meat that came in the lechon, tasted decent but not amazing - repollitos: crispy brussel sprouts, yummy, some of the pieces were burnt, came with candied pumpkin seeds - flan de queso: creamy classic flan - piramide de chocolate: a thin layer of chocolate cake at the bottom with chocolate mousse, also had a prickly pear sauce with Dulce de Leche cream, pretty tasty - blackberry mojito: got this without alcohol and it was yummy! I have heard lots of good things about this place and was excited to try it. I actually got a thoughtful nudge from my mom to bring my girlfriend here for valentines dinner. The ambiance is kind of sexy, low lights, candles on the tables, rustic wooden furniture and copper finishes. Big curled metal chandeliers sprinkled throughout the restaurant. Perfect for a romantic dinner. The waiter was very attentive and helpful. Tableside presentation/pouring of my margarita was an excellent touch. He was readily available and eager to answer questions. What wound up being disappointing was, unfortunately, the food. While it was actually delicious, the proportions were insultingly small and mischaracterized. My jalapeño and yellow tail ceviche was mouthwatering... but the serving was about the size of one regular piece of sashimi split into three slivers.. it was presented on a large plate but only 3 bites were on it... What made me most annoyed was the steak. What the menu offered was a filet with asparagus.... I am guessing the restaurant didn't order the proper amount of meat for the evening? Our waiter told us that they were out of filet and, "would New York strip be okay?". My girlfriend and I both agreed expecting a larger oz. serving for the lesser quality meat substitution. No, we were presented NY strip cut up into a little 6 oz puck with two charred asparagus spears on top. Most of the steak was fatty and inedible. The mole sauce and steak were flavorful though, with what bites were okay. The desert had a cute presentation. Basically, there were two different flavors of mousse molded into a heart shell. The strawberry/rose one just tasted of "red flavor". My girlfriend ordered the chocolate and that was actually pretty good. I felt embarassed throughout the meal and apologized to my girlfriend for the poor experience. I didn't eat that entire day in anticipation of the feast I had expected. I wound up paying a $240 tab, we both left hungry, and ordered a pizza when we got home. I suspect this experience was a management issue overall and miscalculation of what was needed on hand to do service the entire night.
