Ambiance: The restaurant is huge and there is tons of seating. The service was also decent. There is a wide selection of food on the menu as well. Queso: The queso was pretty good! I saw the social media videos of them using real blocked cheese. It was good if you like white cheese queso. There was some tomatoes in there and you can add any meat. The chips were also good they weren't too greasy. Chicken/beef fajitas: This is such a classic dish! The onions on there were really good and had a slight smoky flavor. The beef was good as well and it was cooked to like a medium rare. The chicken was okay it lacked depth.
Overall good! The service was really fast the and food was great and pretty big servings! I will say they told us that we could get seated and eat if we showed up by a certain time which we did but the service was really pushy and so we didn't get to enjoy it as much as we wanted to. Should have just told us to come another time if they close 30 min before their noted closing time instead of rushing us. But the food is good.
Ordered through DoorDash and had delivered to our hotel. Everything was packed well. I ordered chicken fajitas and they were so good! The homemade flour tortillas were delicious and I really appreciate that they make them bc I HATE store bought tortillas. I would definitely order from here again.
Visited Candente while in Houston. The atmosphere was lively and bustling, making it easy to see why this place is so popular. The service was good throughout the meal. We did have to ask for a bit of cleanup around our table from the previous guests, but considering how busy the restaurant was, it wasn't a major issue and was taken care of promptly. The food was very good and lived up to expectations. My only disappointment was the Bloody Maria, which wasn't seasoned properly and lacked the balance and depth of flavour I was hoping for. Overall, a fun, energetic spot serving very good food, with just a few minor details keeping it from being an exceptional experience. Saluti.
Great Tex Mex spot, been around for more than 10 years and they now have a Michelin star. Candente has a wonderful manager Nancy who is such a people person, great personality, and is always hosting events to make candente fun. There is Loteria nights and they announce this on their social media. All the staff are super friendly and attentive. If you need help anyone will help you. Restaurant is spacious indoor and also has a huge outdoor covered patio with fans and also an open patio. For their events I have been to Loteria nights and they give out prizes, it's fun while you grab a bite or a drink. They also have events where they bring in tequila brands and you can do free tastings of tequila! You meet the tequila brands ambassadors and learn about their brand. A great fun time during the week. A perfect spot for weekend drinks and Tex Mex food. My family and I love this spot and if you haven't been definitely stop by.
We made reservations for Father's Day and got seated right on time. They were even able to accommodate 4 more people at our table. Service was good especially with us being a big party. We were seated in the party room with several other large parties. I ordered the shrimp tacos. They were good and I actually finished them all, which is unusual. The chips were not hot, so I didn't eat as many as I normally would. I had a glass of cold beer and had a good time with my family. My husband got the Copa tropical margarita and it was delicious.

We were sat immediately by it had to be outside. It was fine even with the humidity. I ordered the queso which is a must. My friend got a margarita on the rocks. He ordered the tampequeña and I ordered the mixed fajitas. It was so good. Still highly recommended!
What better way to kick off a Texas trip than getting some highly-regarded tex-mex! Some coworkers recommended this spot to me so I had to try! It's in the Museum District/Montrose area, so pretty accessible and with plenty of parking. We got seated immediately, and there was a good amount of indoor and outdoor seating, the latter of which was great even on a humid day. The menu was pretty extensive with your Tex-Mex classics like fajitas and enchiladas, with a special for every day of the week. This time was a free upgrade to a large fajita, so I went with the chicken fajitas! It came out after about 20 minutes with all of the fixings and this very yummy buttery sauce. I haven't had too many fajitas, but I'm pretty confident this is a top spot!
Great steak fajitas. The fajitas have a very smokey taste as they are wood fired. While not the most tender I've had, the wood-fired taste really makes up for it. The salsas are also pretty good & the fajitas come with a nice butter sauce.

I prefer traditional homemade Mexican food but here we are. (Oh I googled and suggested this place lol) Went in for a team lunch on a Friday. Coworker's birthday lunch and she wanted Mexican. Party of 9 and we were seated promptly. They have a lunch menu and a happy hour as well as a full menu and full bar. The interior was nicely decorated. And open. There is bar seating and patio seating as well. Our waitress was Aisha and she was amazing. Friendly, helpful and patient. And able handle our large group and a few more tables with a smile. There were a variety of options. Salads, fajitas, nachos, enchiladas, etc. Also complimentary chips and salsa. My Order: chicken tortilla soup, lunch fajitas combo - chicken and beef. Chicken tortilla soup (3.5/5) - it was a bit salty for me but I am not a salt person so most things are salty to me; everyone else said it was tasty, there were tons of shredded chicken, avocado pieces, tortilla strips Fajitas - combo (4/5) - chicken was seasoned well and the beef (medium rare) was perfection and so tender and juicy, mexican rice was fluffy, and normally I would pass on the beans and get extra rice but my coworker suggested the charro beans and wow, that was a win - the seasoning was great, there were chunks of meat and the texture was nice, the only thing that could have been done better is the flour tortillas - they over-charred them making them too crispy and left them with a burnt taste. A couple of people got the elote salad and raved about it. So that will be a next time try. Def will be back. Everyone enjoyed their meals and some even ordered food to go. Would recommend.
The fajitas were cooked to perfection and to make it even better the tortillas tasted like they were homemade. Were they? No idea but they were so good. We got two de harina and two de maíz. I liked that they offered that option, I don't see that in many places. Everything was great and the margarita was huge. They have outdoor seating which is spacious and has fans throughout so you don't feel the heat as much. We sat inside as we watched the World Cup games. Decor was beautiful and our server was nice. They have parking, which is always a plus!
I'm a Tex-Mex hater so it means a lot when I say I thoroughly enjoyed this meal. We went on Tuesday where you can get a large fajita for the price of a medium. The skirt steak was extremely tender, smoky, and went well with the butter sauce; just a tiny bit more salt would have been perfect for me. The other one we got half beef half chicken - the chicken was surprisingly very juicy whilst being charred perfectly. That on top of the free unlimited chips (the white sauce was great) finally made me realize how people could enjoy Tex-Mex!
Great food, good ambiance. We came right at the end of the night so service was rushed but it was so good and we appreciated the late seating.

Anytime you greet me at the door, it's a plus! Another hidden gem in Houston, the customer is Grade A and the food along with soft and not too loud music playing to fit restaurant. I love the fact that they were ready with vegan options and they did not miss. My dish was the Bow tie pasta loaded with veggies and flavor that transport you what you would think fearing in Italy would be like. Me thinking I would need a doggy bag and my stomach saying not today. The food freshly prepared and served. Also my cup stayed filled as well. They also have sufficient parking at the facility, so no valeting or pay meters. This one definitely goes on the list of returns. So, until the next time!! Bye - Bye! read more
This restaurant is located in the museum district. It's right by the Chips came out first and came with salsa and ranch. Both sauces were surprising spicy, especially the salsa. Love it. We came for lunch which is MON-FRI 11AM-3PM. I got the PICK TWO $19 - crispy beef taco & jalapeño cheese tamale. It also comes with rice, refried beans, and guacamole salad. More like Can't Dente. Not a fan. The food actually isn't bad, by any means, it's just not my thing. I'm not into Tex-Mex. Houston has some of the greatest Mexican food in the world, and for me Tex-Mex never compares. But of course it is beloved by some Houstonians, plenty of Texans and lots of tourists, and as far as Tex Mex goes, Candente (where I've only eaten 3 times) is around average. A little higher priced and higher end than some of the busier and more well known local chains, but similar in quality and bland taste. The Fajitas are my fave thing on the menu, but nothing to write home about. The reason I took off a star (was going to give 3) is because of some personal issues I have with them. When picking up an order here, you get a notification to say, come to the store. That happens to me when I pick up take out in a lot of places, these days, and when I do, it is either ready, or it takes 5 more min or 10 more min (because they mark it ready when it is not. Generally I'm okay with it, if it's less than 10 min. Candente? 20 min or 30 min. Even when it's not busy. They'll mark orders as ready (to make themselves look efficient I imagine) even when they are completely dead, and then will not actually start cooking the order until you get there to pick it up (I know, because I see people come in at the same time I'm there to pick up, order a similar thing, and 20-30 min theirs and mine comes out at a similar time). So just frustrating, is all. The owner is a Texan guy from Kingwood, he also owns the Pit Room BBQ nearby, which is similarly very fancy and successful. Don't let my bad experiences here put you off from trying it. If you want a list of real Mexican gems (and mostly dirt cheap), ask me, but you won't find any Tex Mex on there at all, to be honest. Just not my thing, in the same way that I think American Chinese take away has nothing on Chinese Chinese, such as Sichuan or Xi'an or Hunan cooking. read more

Mother's Day dinner with the family. We got right in no wait at all, but the area we were sitting in had so many flies we finally bagged up our food and left. It was overwhelming for the kids and we left early and some food on the table because the flies were landing on it. This was my first bad experience with this restaurant, we did complain to staff but they didn't seem bothered no other tables were fighting like that. Might choose inside next time if we chose to return. We did ask for the table fans but that didn't help the situation. Also parking is always horrible they have security but they only sit there on the phones. The lot is already small and you allowed them to take over 2 spots there is a sports car in there all the time we have gone that takes over 2 spots read more
I had an amazing experience at Candente! The patio seating, service, and food were all amazing: I ordered the cheese enchiladas and topped with queso and I ate the entire plate. This is still one of my favorite Mexican restaurants in Houston! It's always super busy, but usually they're able to seat you right away. This past visit I tried the birria tacos for the first time and now I have a new favorite. We also tried the brisket nachos. It could have used a little bit more cheese which we did ask our waiter for, but he never bought it out but I would stick to my usual queso with added ground beef. If you haven't tried Candente, I definitely recommend it you won't be disappointed. read more
Excellent service and atmosphere. The servers were very attentive and bussers did not waste time in cleaning the area and providing straws and napkins. The complimentary chips and salsa were almost good and plentiful enough for a meal in and of themselves. Good for individuals, groups, and families. Three of us had lunch here, and the prices were very reasonable. The lunch menu featured a lot of standard favorites--enchiladas, tacos, fajitas. I had a combination platter of a taco, enchilada and burrito with rice and charro beans. Another companion had burria tacos. Spice level was good as well. Very attentive staff and they seem to understand customer's needs before they ask. Will return for Happy Hour. read more

Candente is a Tex Mex restaurant located in the Montrose area of Houston. Candente is known for their margaritas, brisket queso and their fajitas. We visited Candente for dinner after happy hour ended on a Wednesday. Just an FYI that happy hour is Monday-Friday from 3-6 PM. Parking: there is a parking garage attached to Candente that has designated parking spots for diners. This parking is limited and there are signs that designate which spots are for Candente. There is also limited street parking around the restaurant. Ambiance: Candente has a bar, inside seating and an huge outdoor patio. We sat on the outdoor patio because there was a wait for an inside table. They were playing the Astros game at the bar TVs and they had a fun Loteria game going in the patio. This was a special event for that night. It was hot on the patio but that was just the natural Texas heat. The music inside was pretty loud when I went to use the restroom and I've seen that been a complaint from some diners on Yelp. Service: the service was fine. Being on the patio is tough because severs have a long way to travel to take care of the patio tables and inside tables. We had to ask for water refills a couple of times. The food came out in a timely matter so that was nice as we ordered appetizers and main entrees. Drinks: my brother got a mojito de coco which had rum, coconut, and lime. He enjoyed this mojito a lot and said it was refreshing in the heat. Food: the complementary chips and red and green salas were very good! We ate two baskets of these chips and asked for more salsa as well. We ordered two appetizers and three mains. Beef fajita quesadilla: the quesadilla was an appetizer for us and man this was good. The tortilla was crisped perfectly and the fajita beef was very tender. It came with a side of pico, sour cream and guacamole. It was $19 for 4 triangle pieces so a little pricey for a quesadilla. Smoked chicken flautas: this flauta appetizer came with 4 chicken flautas covered in avocado salsa, cream and queso fresco. The chicken in these flautas had great flavor! The chicken was moist and the shell on the flauta was thin and crispy. This was my favorite dish of the night! Carne Guisada: I ordered the carne guisada and it was delicious. It was stewed Mexican beef served with rice and beans and a side of three flour tortillas. The meat was tender and in a nice gravy sauce. It came with a side of cilantro, onions and tomatoes. The portion size was little lacking but it made up in flavor. Tacos birria de res: the birria tacos came with three tacos in one order. It came with a side of beef consume and rice and beans. The beef in the birria tacos was very tender and the consume had rich flavor. It was also a little pricey at $28 for the three tacos with rice and beans. Plato Epico: this combo plate came with a chicken taco, cheese enchilada, cheese chili relleno, and a crispy beef taco. This plate was your standard mixed Tex mex plate. It had all the staples on one plate. It also was only $25 so it was good value! Nothing stood out on this plate but it was an all around good Tex Mex plate. Overall, I'd say Candente brings the flavor on most of their food but at the price point of some items on their menu, it feels like I should have been more full. I subsidized the portions with their chips which is never an issue at Tex mex places. All of their beef dishes were good and their chicken flautas were the best dish of the night. The restaurant provided plenty of seating and the patio is a nice change of pace from an AC filled room. Come here for the food but don't expect it to be cheap! read more
We dropped in for lunch on Sunday, party of four. Love that they have an attached garage for parking, kept the car cool even though it was in the 90's outside. The restaurant was still packed at 2:30 PM. We were seated in the last booth towards the back of the restaurant. Next time, I would opt out of sitting there as it's next to the kitchen and it's really loud with dishes and glasses banging around. It didn't help that our server forgot to put in our appetizer order. We waited to order the entree to give a little time for the brisket queso to arrive but it never showed up. We reminded the server that we never received it after the fajitas arrived, so that we would not get charged for it. We ordered the ceviche trio and a large prime Niman ranch skirt steak fajita for shared entrees. The ceviche was OK, the green one was a little bland. The fajita was the star of our lunch, cooked perfect to medium, very tender for skirt steak. We ordered extra flour tortillas and this took 15 mins to arrive. The mangonada was good. The cantaloupe and hibiscus Agua Frescas were good as well. I would come back again for the food, would love to try other things on the menu. read more

Staple Tex mex place in Montrose. On a weekday they get busy around 6:30 but it's nice that there's a garage (narrow spots!!!) plus street parking. House Margarita is a nice size and very tasty. Queso is a must! Decent size for sharing too. Tacos Al carbon was tasty, I got the combo so one chicken one steak, and both were great. The tortilla was fresh and I loved the toppings it came with. Another year, another review of Candente! Candente is one of my top spots to bring friends or family who are visiting Houston since it's a local business with some Texas flare. Their barbecue inspired Tex-Mex is top notch. The meats are juicy & so flavorful! The service is exceptional (they keep that ranch dip, salsa, and chip basket flowing). There's plenty of seating available indoors and outdoors, with an open air patio and string lights that set a nice ambience in the evening. If you're debating on giving Candente a try, do it! read more
It's difficult to say anything that hasn't already been said about this outstanding restaurant! The skirt steak fajitas were succulent, tender, and very flavorful. The (melted chili-lime butter?) served alongside it was a show-stopper! My son had the brisket enchiladas, which were also delicious. Canedente is not just a Michelin star since 2024 but is serves daily deliciousness. The restaurant is so beautiful with a massive outdoor sitting area that is heated, has fans for cooling and a beautiful water feature. The service was wonderful the young man gave his favorite items yet we picked the Shrimp Chevice Trio and the #1 grill. Our total bill was about $100.00 and the amount of food was literally enough for 4 people. The server knew we were sharing and had the rice/beans and fajita fixings all in dishes for us both, such a great touch! The food was amazing and so well seasoned that we barely had to add hot sauce. We of course had left overs, as we were packing it all up and wanted to take our chips and salsa that is phenomenal when the waiter offered us a bag of chips and fresh Salsa another great touch. read more

The food was pretty good but maybe a little expensive for what it was. Service was absolutely immaculate, everyone was so kind and helpful! They refilled our waters, offered more chips and salsa, and answered any questions we had. We were sat on the patio and it was nice other than the weather. Also, for some reason the parking garage couldn't be used so parking was a bit difficult. read more
I really enjoyed my experience here on Cinco de Mayo this year. It also was kind of surprising how well things worked out because I'm definitely used to Cinco de Mayo being a crazy day to try to go to a Mexican restaurant especially since they do not take reservations. I originally planned to just go there for drinks and go somewhere else to actually eat because they were doing tequila tastings. However while we were there, we were seeing the food that was coming out and smelling the aroma of the food they were serving and all three of us decided we were willing to wait and stay. So this was specifically for Cinco de Mayo, but they had as I said tequila tastings so they had different tables where they were giving out tequila. I thought it was very generous and a nice touch on Cinco De Mayo and the fact that it was free was great. So I decided to put us on the waitlist and they told us it would be about an hour or so, which would not have been ideal at all, but thankfully they were able to seat us very quickly compared to what they told us, which was amazing. The service was really good and I felt like our waitress was really friendly and attentive. Even in the midst of the craziness, she was still very available for us. The food was really good and I enjoyed the queso. My only complaint was that the queso was kind of cold. I probably should've asked for them to heat it up but it still tasted good. I got my entrée after and the portion was HUGE so I definitely had a lot of food to take home and I also really enjoyed it. One of the items on the entrée was a steak taco and the steak was so good. I feel like it was seasoned to perfection and I absolutely loved it. I also enjoyed the enchiladas as well. I got a kiwi margarita and it was really good too. I would say this is the second best Mexican food that I've had in Houston and I've been to several Mexican restaurants for tacos Tuesday. If you need a place in Houston that can host your whole crew and still feel like a cozy hangout, Candente is it. We rolled in with twelve people and got seated in a snap. The ambiance is warm and inviting--perfect for a laid-back feast with friends. Now, the food is where they really shine. The fajitas arrive sizzling hot, loaded with juicy ribeye or chicken that's tender and flavorful. The taco birria de res, with its luscious bone marrow, is a must-try. And don't skip the complimentary nachos and that magical green salsa--trust me, it's a flavor fiesta. Wrap it up with a flan or tres leches if you can, and you'll leave feeling like a Tex-Mex VIP. My dad is a Tex-Mex connoisseur so as soon as someone recommended this place to him, we all had to go! Navigating there was super easy! They have a small private parking garage next to the restaurant that's free, but spaces are a little small so if you have a large car, park on the street. Otherwise, parking is relatively simple considering this restaurant is in the heart of Montrose. Just from the outside, I could tell the restaurant had a great ambiance. The decor was colorful, the lighting was nice, and overall it felt very cozy and comfortable! For food, we ordered the beef nachos since on Mondays it's half off nachos, and I got the birria tacos as recommended by our server. I think the nachos were absolutely delicious but I did think the portion was too small. I definitely envisioned a pile of nachos, but we received a plate of 8 chips. Maybe that's my fault for being gluttonous but however, they were super cheesy and delicious. I would only get them on Mondays though. My birria tacos were also pretty good. The consome was a little too cinnamon-y, but the salsa that came with it was nice and spicy! I do wish there were more onions on my tacos, but the meat itself was tender and juicy. The service was honestly ok, definitely nothing to write home about. They were a little slow which is fine since it seemed super busy, but it did seem like our waitress kept forgetting about us and rarely checked in. We asked for our check, but she gave it to us 20 minutes after we asked for it. I also requested a container for my consome to take home and I waited 10 min an extra for it but never got it and then she took my plate away. All in all, this is a place I would recommend for people to visit once, but we won't be abandoning our usual Tex-Mex place. read more

Came for lunch with some friends on a Thursday. It wasn't very busy and we were seated right away. I ordered a melón agua frescas to drink. It was decent. Maybe a little too sweet for me but not bad. For food we each had something a little different. I had the elote salad with steak which was very flavorful and surprisingly filling. My friend had the birria tacos which was served with bone marrow(?) she seemed to really enjoy it. I tried a bite of the taco with the consume and they were both super flavorful. Her boyfriend had the fajitas and he really enjoyed them and it was good portion wise. The chips and salsa were good too, the green salsa was yummy. Overall a great experience! I've been wanting to come here for a few years after hearing from a coworker raving how good it is. Even more so now they were mentioned by Michelin and do they deserve the mention. There's street parking and a parking garage right next to the restaurant. There's a very large covered patio and lots of outdoor seating, inside there's a mural in progress and they blast the A/C. The chips and salsa were on point. The creamy green sauce is tangy and tasty. The red salsa had a lil kick and tasted roasted. We got an order of brisket enchiladas and a medium beef fajitas. We received our food in about 15 minutes and it was good. The brisket enchiladas for me are a first, it's smokey tender and had a small drizzle of bbq sauce. It came with some queso and rice and refried beans. All delicious. The beef fajitas were so good. The beef was tender and cooked to a perfect medium. The homemade flour tortillas tasted so great with them. I also had a cup of their chicken tortilla soup - it's served with diced avocado, tortilla chips and the broth is so good, flavorful and delicious. I also enjoyed the cantaloupe agua frescas. It was refreshing, not too sweet and served in a giant cup. The service was fine. I am glad I came here for dinner. I would love to try more of their menu and margaritas. read more

Great place for a date night! The atmosphere was relaxed but lively, and we were able to get seated immediately on a Friday night despite what looked like a very busy night! Within minutes of getting seated, we were served fresh warm chips and salsa, which had the right amount of kick and flavor. My wife and I decided to just share a Medium skirt steak fajita order, which ended up being the right amount of food for us. No joke it came 10 minutes after our waiter left to put in our order!! The steak was perfectly medium, and with the grilled onions, garlicky butter sauce, and other toppings, the fajitas were absolutely fantastic! On our list to come back to this restaurant -- great vibes, great service, and great food! read more
Candente was pretty middle of the pack in terms of Tex-Mex in Houston. The service was friendly and I enjoyed the atmosphere. The queso is a white queso that has a great initial taste but lacks depth other quesos offer. Although they are supposedly known for their fajitas, I was expecting more. The chicken could have been marinated more and have more flavor. It also could have been cooked a little more tender. We got a frozen premium margarita that was solid and on par with most restaurants. Overall, Candente is not a bad experience but there are other places in Houston that shine more. (Of note- you are given more fajitas than are shown in my photo) read more

They are made with lard. That's why they taste so good!!!😉
Does Candente accept reservations or have an online waitlist?
No reservations - first come, first served. 6 pm was good for no wait on a Saturday night.
Is the business open now?
They weren't last Wednesday at 5:30p when we tried to go, no lights were on inside. Just tried calling them too and nobody answered 😢
