We attended wreath laying day at the Veterans Cemetary and were starved for something tasty. I did a quick Google search along our route and saw Nate's Diner pop up. I'll admit that when we got there, it doesn't look like much from the outside, but inside is a different feel. We were greeted and told we could sit where we like. My never ending quest for the perfect hashbrowns lead me to Nate's, which was further motivated after realizing it was on my list for years. What I eventually found both surprised and delighted me, and Nate's gets a thumbs up overall. Pictures are deceiving as I thought the place would be larger but it's a tight fit for bigger groups. There are only a handful of tables but plenty of character. It's also a bit grimey, unsightly and even a tinge dodgey, which may be a deal breaker for others but is an immediate appeal to me. Two things immediately standout when it comes to the food: the portions and the prices are outstanding. The offerings are as no frills as the rest of the establishment. The other surprise was how much influence there was from Mexican cuisine. Hash browns were the goal, but chorizo and chilaquiles were the bonus. Another surprise? The hash browns weren't as crispy as I would have wanted. It's entirely plausible that I came on an off day, which happens. However everything else was on point as my chorizo skillet was absolutely dynamite, pancakes were fluffy and indulgent, breakfast tacos were outstanding, and my eggs were perfectly softly scrambled. Even the bacon and sausage patties were delicious, which is a tall order considering it's not likely made in house. Lastly, as someone who drinks cold water like it's a hobby (#1), I'm especially grateful for the massive 32 oz cup of water, which is perfect for someone who drinks like a camel. The staff is not the quickest but they are friendly. Spanish may go further with most and they're not the quickest when it comes to greeting folks or cleaning tables. It mostly tasted like slightly salty fried batter even though it looks like there's a good amount of meat. The mashed potatoes with white gravy was good. The broccoli was soft and slightly peppery. Bananas! This small nondescript diner, overwhelmed me (in a good way) with the flavor of bananas the cook managed to get in to their Nutella banana, pancake! I've been checking out the reviews of this place since I live literally a minute away. Decided to check it out and it was a hit. I ordered the chicken fajita plate for lunch. It was really yummy. I thought the chicken would be super dry, but it was perfect well seasoned, and the right portion for lunch. I also got flour tortillas and corn tortillas which were amazing. Not sure if they were homemade, but they are dangerously delicious. There was one waitress working and she was working at all by herself. We were pretty surprised that there were people coming in and out to a place that we thought was a hole in the wall for the locals. This was our first time at Nate's diner and will be back soon. It was ok. The hostess didn't speak to us at all when we came in, just escorted us to a table and left. The waitress was very sweet. The food was just ok too. I live for biscuits and gravy and these were like packaged gravy and can biscuits. I had the breakfast potatoes and they were so over salted that I couldn't eat them. I went big & ordered the chicken fried chicken breakfast. This is the best I've had in forever. It's freshly battered & fried. Not some frozen tasteless chunk of meat. Perfectly seasoned & crunchy. That gravy was the business. Pancakes buttery & fluffy. Eggs cooked perfect medium to go with my crispy hashbrowns which weren't all greasy. I'm getting hungry just thinking about it. The coffee was nice & fresh. You can tell they don't water it down to stretch it like many places. I ended up taking half of my food home because it was so much. I could've sat in Nate's all day. The service was great the girl who helped us was named Araceli very sweet and respectful but it seems like the owner was there with his entire family extended family because it was like 20 of them as Araceli was taking our order I guess the daughter or niece came and interrupted very rudely and in a very rude manner spoke to her demanding if her food was ready the poor waitress looked embarrassed in a snobby manner she walked off almost stomping throwing a fit with the little friend she walked towards the back I'm guessing towards the kitchen. They all kept doing that getting in the way of the only 2 employees there on a Saturday night as they were showing the canelo and Crawford fight. I have a weekend routine that has me in the general area of Nate's on either Saturday or Sunday. A few months back, I stopped at Nate's for the first time to grab breakfast with my son. He loved it; I loved it. We've tried several of the breakfast and lunch options. No matter what I've ordered, Nate's exceeds my expectations. It either lands on the table looking better than I anticipated or tasting better than I imagined. Oh yeah, when possible, I prefer family owned/ran restaurants. This place is definitely mom and pop.
