Great local spot in Old town Spring, the atmosphere is very old western small town vibe. Theres lots of other shops and restaurants nearby to check out. Inside you'll find some very cool art and antique details that will bring you back in time. The food was good, very southern comfort, and heavily plated, so be ready to eat. We had two dishes but we still left with to go containers that we enjoyed in the late evening. The staff were super friendly and helpful, they give you a great history of the restaurant and some great recommendations. I've had Wunsche Bros Cafe & Saloon bookmarked for awhile. The thought of a old time saloon turned into a nice steak house was intriguing. There is alot of history with this place. The building was originally built in 1902 as a hotel, brothel and saloon. It turned into a cafe in 1949. The floors are original and you can see remnants of the past all over the place. Some say it's haunted! The whole town has character and this place fits right in. My friends and I came for dinner on the weekend. Reservations are not required but recommended as it is a popular spot in Old Towne Spring. We were seated right away off in the back in what looked to be a dining room. We were the only ones dining in there throughout the whole meal. Our server was a nice, young gentleman, but service was slow. We had to ask for basic things repeatedly. My friends started off with some cocktails which they said were good and strong. I opted for iced tea as it was a work night. My friends have been here a few times and said we had to get some of the famous beer bread. I was expecting a dark loaf of bread, but instead we got a cake like loaf that was very dense. It ate like a cornbread but tasted like beer bread. It was very good. Next up was Southern Style Deviled Eggs. Nothing to write home about, but they were good. Last for the apps was the Wunsche Pork Bites. These were delicious. They were bite sized pieces of a smoked pork chop that was fried crispy and tossed in a sweet chili sauce and topped with crispy onion strings. These were addicting. The entree that drew my attention to this place was the Double Cut Smoked Pork Chop. There's a popular chain that has an impressive pork chop and I wanted to compare to the one made here. The pork chop here was just as good, if not, better. My one and only gripe was the compound butter on it. It was a maple citrus apple butter. For my taste buds. if it were just a maple apple butter, it would have been perfect. The citrus component threw it off a little. I would substitute it with another compound butter or none at all next time. For desserts, we went with the Chocolate Whiskey Cake and the Buttermilk Pecan Pie. These were both excellent. I am usually not a pecan pie guy, but this was very good. Overall, though this place is no where close to home, the drive out here was worth it. So, I will start by saying that I have now been to this location a couple of times and our first experience was the best of them and I will say that the service that we received the first time was the absolute best we have had in a while. Our waitress was Zoe and she set the bar high! As soon as we were seated Zoe hurried to our table to take our drink orders and since it was our first time, she gave us a little history about the restaurant and walked us through the menu and her favorites, she even offered us a tour of the place. I was truly amazed by the attention she gave us. The food came out extra hot and fresh I ordered the Double Cut Pork Chop 18oz, my hubby had the New York Strip 14oz and my daughter had Sliders from the kid's menu. The Pork Chop was so juicy, tender and full of flavor, I just loved the smokey flavor. The steak was made to his liking and was also juicy a thick cut and the mashed potatoes paired with these entrees are some of the best I have had. The whiskey cake was moist and you could definitely taste the whiskey in it, yum! Ambiance, this place was neat it almost felt like an experience. Zoe mentioned that the place had original hardwood floors since the place opened and was the only establishment near the railroad during the 1900s. The restaurant has multiple floors and plenty of seating. There is always plenty of parking, even if you have to walk a block or two, but they do have paid parking around the corner. We obviously enjoyed this restaurant so much we have returned multiple times, but nobody has topped Zoe's customer service. read more

This is an iconic restaurant in a historic building. It is full of personality and has a great staff. If you pay attention to the daily specials, you can do really well in terms of value. Sunday's pork chop dinner for $19 is regularly priced at $42, for example. (Please see my photo of the daily specials board.) That said, this former bordello does have some downsides, which I need to mention: First, it is too loud -- nothing sound-absorbing in the place, and the jazz music recording was turned up the day we were there. This caused communication problems with the waiter, who misheard me, and I really couldn't hear what he was saying. This is not an intimate spot for deep conversations. Second, parking is a challenge. No parking lot. There are some spaces across the street along the railroad tracks, but not enough. I parked on the other side of the tracks and hiked over the rails, but that is a little dangerous. There are some $ 5-a-day parking lots up the road. Is the pork chop better than Perry's? I liked the mashed potatoes, and the meat was properly prepared for sure, but the seasoning was not exactly right for me -- I think they added cinnamon, though my wife thinks it was allspice, and a hint of sugar. An East Texas sort of flavor--I prefer Perry's. But a close second for sure. Amazing Service from start to finish!! The waitress even offered to take us on a tour of the upstairs rooms/museum! Ask for Zoe!! She's the BEST! Hubby thoroughly enjoyed the appetizer trio with sausage balls, cheese curds, and fried pickles, but his FAVORITE was the double cut chop!! It was juicy and tasted more like a ham than a dry chop! Everything else has been either redone or remodeled to death. Nothing feels or looks old, the bar area looks downright 2000's hipster industrial. The bathroom was genuinely cool though. As a history teacher I'm giving the decor a D. Once again, the wife and I had some errands to run in the Conroe area. I decided on Wunsche Bros, a place I've always wanted to try. Unfortunately it didn't live up to expectations. We ordered beer bread for an appetizer, a Caesar Salad, and the Chicken Fried Steak with Mac and Cheese for the entree. The beer bread was okay. It was dense and had a good flavor but I've had better. Beer Bread gets a C. The salad had identity issues. The lettuce was a little limp. The dressing, and parmesan cheese slices were top notch though and that kept it from getting a failing grade. Caesar Salad gets a B-. The Chicken Fried Steak was good. The breading was crisp around the edges, and held up against the gravy. The steak was firm but not chewy.. The mashed potatoes were velvety and creamy. I liked the chunks of skin. They felt like they were marinated in butter. The Mac and cheese was a let down. They tasted like elevated Kraft macaroni and cheese from the box covered in seasoned breadcrumbs. My wife said everything was too salty for her and after contemplating I had to agree. Chicken Fried Steak: C+ Mashed Potatoes: C- Mac and Cheese: F Service gets an A. The wait staff was very attentive and worked quickly when my wife spilled her water. Overall it finishes with a C minus. I liked Old Town Spring and plan to go back but I won't go back to Wunsche Bros. There's other places to try and this place didn't make the cut for traditional "must do" places. But I can tell this place is normally a solid 4‑star spot, although today's visit was a 3‑star experience at best--mostly because the small, meaningful touches just didn't happen. Birthday Misses: I told the staff three times that we were celebrating my kid's birthday. We got one quick "oh, happy birthday" at the start, and then... nothing. No candle. No card. Not even a simple "happy birthday" when the cake we ordered arrived. I actually had to say as a prompt, "we have to order a slice of cake since it's her birthday," which felt like pulling teeth. I saw other servers who looked fantastic, but ours didn't even know what sides came with the steak, and couldn't answer basic questions (including the ghost stories my kid was excited about). Food Notes: * My kid's steak was ordered medium rare, but came out very rare and blue inside--see pic. I would've loved it because I love Pittsburgh style steak. But my kid don't like it when the meat is still kick'in. * The whiskey cake wasn't sweet or chocolaty, which is unfortunate because that's exactly what my kid loves. Atmosphere: We were seated in the half of the building that previously burned down. It's very obvious which side that is, both on the inside and outside. A true Texas legend started over a century ago when two local brothers Charlie and Dale Wunsche, opened a Hotel, brothel and saloon for the railroad workers and travelers. The business thrived until prohibition when it was sold and became a café in 1949. Today we came to try the popular $19 pork chop special. They have wonderful daily specials. They do have wonderful starters such as sausage and sauerkraut balls and Texas style queso. The fried green tomatoes are fabulous. Numerous burgers and sandwiches. I ordered the smoked sausage and it was good, but I thought the food temperature should have been hotter. The white bread on the side is really unnecessary. The portion was great, and the grilled jalapeño was phenomenal. I could have read the menu wrong but I thought the onions were supposed to be pickled red onions, and they weren't, The ambience was nice. Today was my third time visiting, and honestly, it was the best experience yet! We came on their Wednesday pork chop special night. My husband and I were in a time crunch and only had about 50 minutes before our next plans. Our server assured us we'd be fine -- and she was right! Our food came out in about five minutes, which absolutely amazed me. My husband's pork chop was massive, tender, and full of flavor. The apple butter paired perfectly with it. Wunsche Bros is always good. The staff is friendly, the place has an interesting history. We took grandkids (who are adults) and had a fun time. I had the chicken strips, which were plentiful and tasted really good, but the fries are just weird. They are curled in an unexpected way and some of them were tough and hard to eat. Others ordered the double port chop (excellent!), which was the "special of the day" and therefore very reasonably priced and the ribeye sandwich and the catfish. My husband didn't care much for the catfish, he said it was "fatty", which I have never heard describing catfish. Also, those fries again were not pleasing. My grandson liked the ribeye sandwich a lot, but again, didn't like the fries. Music was a little too loud for us, but we are old and prefer to talk instead of rocking out. I went to Wunche Brothers for my sister's birthday--it was my first visit. Not the best time to go since Old Town Spring is known for tough parking; we ended up about five blocks away. The restaurant was packed for Saturday lunch, and we were seated in a back area where sound echoed so badly, it was hard to talk to someone even one seat over. Despite that, the service was excellent. Our waitress was friendly and professional, and when we had an issue with a salt shaker, the manager came over to apologize and gave us free dessert and a signed birthday card, which was a really nice gesture. I'm on a budget, so I appreciated that the club sandwich was affordable--and huge. My husband and I both got it and had leftovers. The fries were great, too. The rest of the group loved their meals and desserts: chicken fried steak, chicken fried chicken, cheeseburger, and a massive pork chop that looked delicious, chocolate whiskey cake that was light and not dense at all, and the key lime pie was sweet . The women's restroom was clean, and all the staff we interacted with were kind and courteous. I ordered a club sandwich and an iced tea. While this sandwich looks good, and in fact is really good, I don't know if it is worth $17. $17 for a club sandwich, I can almost wrap my head around that, but this is my real gripe .. $5 for the iced tea. Who charges $5 for tea? there's nothing they could do to this tea to make it worth $5 and heaven help them if this cup falls below half full. I am in Old Town Spring, in kind of like a touristy area, walking around and doing some shopping. In my opinion , they should have smaller portion options for lunch or solo diners. . I won't be going home for another hour or two, I'm not going to finish this sandwich at all, so paying $17 for something that I'm not going to eat is crazy. I should have looked at the menu options before I came in. I looked at the reviews and they are stellar, and what I based my decision on . But seriously, I can't get over the $5 iced tea. If I were with another person and able to share the sandwich with somebody else, the sandwich price would be acceptable. It's a good sandwich, and the fries are good, but for a solo dining experience, NO, I would not suggest. Maybe if I were going home immediately after this, I could eat the rest of the sandwich later, but that's not the case, so this is a waste of food. I will take the 3/4 of the sandwich that remains and maybe I will find someone to give it to, but if not , it's going in the trash, which is a shame. Stopped into Wunche Bros. Café and Saloon the other day for lunch. We were with a rather large group of friends and this old building looked interesting. And interesting it was, and in a very good way. To begin with, the food was absolutely outstanding. Our group ordered a variety of dishes. We started with some appetizers, sausage sauerkraut balls, fried pickles and Southern style deviled eggs along with a round of beers while we chatted and explored this really cool old building. We ordered our entrees, grilled ribeye steak sandwiches, black and bleu burgers, Old Town Spring Club Sandwiches and pulled pork sandwiches. We did not have one dish that was not delicious! Every bite of every meal was better than the last. Our server, Megan was definitely top notch and knew her job. While we were waiting on our entrees, we checked out the really nice upstairs bar and happened to run into Jason, the Wunsche Bros Event Manager who was extremely friendly and more than willing to speak about the history of this building and share with us stories of ghosts and paranormal activity that is supposed to occur within this building. ABSOLUTLY fascinating stories! Besides the great food and service, this impromptu tour was more than enough to make all of us want to come back and recommend the Wunche Bros. 11/2/2025: We planned a shopping day in Old Town Spring. Shoppers need fuel, so we made reservations for lunch to start our day. I highly recommend reservations. We don't get many of those in the Houston area, so we made the best of it! To start, Wunsche Bros Cafe & Saloon opened in 1902 in Old Town Spring as the Wunsche Brothers Saloon and Hotel. It was originally built by brothers Dell and Charlie Wunsche to serve railroad workers and travelers. This establishment was also a brothel. They have a rich history with the clientele, going through Prohibition, fires, and years in business. WBC&S is absolutely haunted and having it positioned at the end of the street right next to an operating railroad, made the scene that much more interesting. A train went speeding by as we entered the doors. Scary places always have a train. It truly set the scene. After being seated at our table, we were immediately greeted by our waitress, Misty. She was a wealth of knowledge and I thought it was very nice for her to not only take time to tell us the history but to also answer our questions. Especially noting the restaurant was very busy, Misty was great! She was on top of our drinks, our order, and all around a pleasure! We started with the cheese curds. They were crispy and delicious. We also order the beer bread. It is very dense! I wasn't crazy about the taste. Beer was definitely present. All four of us ordered the Wunsche burger. We all split the burger baskets. It looked small but turned out to be the perfect amount. The burger was delicious! The fried were hand cut and crispy. We got a side of sweet potato fries to try. I wasn't impressed with those. After our meal, we ventured upstairs to take a look around. It is creepy up there! Old photos on the wall with period staged furniture, and the rooms are still sectioned off so it is easy to imagine the brothel in your mind. I was very impressed with the preservation of the upstairs area. They have a party room upstairs and other smaller areas available for s more intimate group experience. Outdoor seating is also available both upstairs and downstairs. It is not on the railroad side, so the noise would probably be less, which would help. Highly recommend. Came here for Easter lunch and had Harmony as our server and she was excellent! She had great timing with the food and popping up to our table as well as making great recommendations. We were never short on drinks or napkins which was especially important since we have a three year old with us. My first visit to Wunsche Brothers Cafe & Saloon and I'm disappointed in myself I had not dined here on my previous visits to Spring. I sat at the bar and had the pleasure to meet Jackie...who took excellent care of me. I ordered a local brew called Brazos Blond and decided on the special for the evening...Blackened Redfish with Crawfish Etouffee, blackened shrimp, and shredded crab meat with a side of rice plus I added a side salad. Great salad...everything was fresh and the in-house dressing was very tasty. The flavors of the blackened fish and shrimp was just perfect. Just enough heat to give it a kick while allowing all of the flavors to shine through. Exceptional dining experience!!! read more

Wunsche Bros. Cafe & Saloon was one of those places that completely exceeded expectations. I'm rarely out in Old Town Spring, but I was in the area picking up a piece of metal art for my patio and wanted to take my mom and brother somewhere unique that we don't have in Katy. A quick Google search brought this place up first with 4.9 stars, which is practically unheard of these days, so we decided to try it. Wow. What a meal. We started with the onion ring basket and a half order of beer bread. The onion rings were fantastic--huge, thick-cut rings with a wonderfully seasoned batter that actually had flavor instead of tasting flat or bland. Served piping hot, which matters to me because I like my food HOT. The ranch dressing was a great addition, too. The beer bread was decent. You could definitely taste the beer, but it wasn't the best loaf I've ever had. Mom, Mark, and I all ordered the grilled ribeye steak sandwich. I'm the only one who got it as designed on the menu. I originally expected more of a slab-of-steak sandwich, but it was actually closer to a Philly cheesesteak style sandwich, which honestly I prefer. Mom and Mark skipped the peppers, onions, garlic aioli, and pepper jack cheese in favor of lettuce, tomato, and mayo instead. Our waiter, Evan, was wonderful! He was friendly, attentive, accommodating, and clearly proud of the restaurant. He even offered to tell us the history of the building and restaurant, which added so much to the experience. The story is also printed on the back of the menu, and it's definitely worth reading. Evan mentioned he's only been there a few months, but he is absolutely an asset to the restaurant as a server. My brother Mark is blind and autistic, and it's honestly not often a server addresses him directly. They usually look to mom or me and ask, "What does he want?," but Evan asked Mark directly. Kudos to him. We had to finish the meal with the historical whiskey chocolate cake, and I'm glad we did. It's served warm with whipped cream on the side, caramel sauce drizzled across the plate, and pecans on top. Absolutely delicious and huge! There were four of us who shared it, and it was more than enough for each of us. Also worth mentioning: the sweet potato fries are an extra $4 but absolutely worth it. These are NOT frozen Ore-Ida fries dumped from a bag. They're clearly fresh cut and homemade, and they were delicious. For nearly two o'clock in the afternoon, the place was packed--at least three-quarters full--and the entire atmosphere was warm and welcoming. Everyone we encountered was friendly. I live in Katy, so Old Town Spring is definitely not nearby for me, but I would absolutely recommend this place to anyone in the area or just passing through. It's easy to see why people love it. We were exploring Old Town Spring yesterday, 10Mar26, hitting some of the quilting shops (the Missus new hobby) and we found ourselves a touch peckish. My Wife needed a good meal to keep going on that hunt for fabric, so the age old decision was thrust upon us ... what to have. Well, after a few blocks and several suggestions getting shot down from my side, we found ourselves at the front steps of Wunsche Brothers Cafe and Saloon. We climbed the stairs, opened the well worn door handle and entered into 1920. Even after the repairs from the fire a number of years ago, the place just exudes that time warp back to a much simpler era where travelers stopped and just rested for a spell or had a meal before continuing on their way. Dark, uneven planks held us as we were shown to our table, panels of wood hold the stairway to private dining areas that used to be sleeping rooms for overnighters and possibly some of the more risqué activities that were part of a major depot stop in the days of train travel. After our hostess seated is, we ordered drinks and some of their beer bread before ordering the meal. The bread came out hot and slightly steamy. Whipped butter on the side just waiting to be slathered on that slightly sweet, dense crumb wrapped in a chewy crust. Naturally, I wolfed my half down. It was really good bread. The Missus and I decided to split a chicken fried steak with mash and an additional side of squash casserole. The kitchen was kind and served us on two plates. As usual, the CFS was tremendous. Thick, peppery gravy that clung to the crust, meat and taters was creamy and complimented the beef perfectly. Our squash casserole had a sprinkling of bread crumbs for texture and a touch of sweetness to the well cooked veggie. The mouth feel of the casserole was pleasant as was the finish of sweet. Normally, I am not a big fan of sweet squash, but this was tasty. The place has changed in the thirty years we have been eating there and this latest iteration is the best we have had the pleasure of experiencing. The saloon has a stage that hosts live acts and much of our lunch time there was old TV shows being broadcast on the stage wall. If you enjoy a great ambiance laden place to dine, catch a show or have a cold beer drawn, Wunsche Brothers Cafe and Saloon is a top choice in Old Town Spring. Ciao, Darrell read more

Wunsche's never disappoints, It gets better with each visit! Today was girls lunch and Allec was great. I got there before my friend so he suggested a great drink for me to try while I waited, and it was phenomenal! This was my first time having the rotisserie chicken and it was very good. The Whiskey cake topped off the meal. It doesn't matter how good a restaurants food is if they have bad wait staff it can ruin an establishment......Wunsche Brothers have excellent wait staff and I can't say enough about Allec and his awesome service and attention.
