Food is amazing every single time. It is always such a nostalgic flavor. My favorite burger of all time is the #3. I would highly highly recommend coming here. Tucked away in a nondescript retail center that has seen its best many a decade ago its Not much on the outside at all. Upon walking in you are welcomed to a bright and clean establishment with 70s disco pumping through the speakers and a friendly and chipper staff. This is by far the best looking and cleanest of this local chain. I guess they say its the original and therefore it should the flag bearer in what a Hippo Burger (HB) should be. Coworker recommended this place. Ask the friendly cashier what she recommended if I only ever get to eat here once and she recommended the mushroom burger. My burger was fantastic. Think Larry David: Prettyyyy...prettyyyy....pretty good. The menu is the perfect size - just enough variety for whatever you're feeling like. Every side we tried was hot and solid. The burgers were all the picture-perfect version of "decent." The people running the place were pleasant. Interesting place. Would like to see the rest of the locations. We went on a Tuesday evening and the place was surprisingly dead for it being dinner time. Fortunately, that meant fast service. The cheeseburgers were very good. Not necessarily life changing, I have to come back ASAP good, but worth a return trip. The restaurant itself was rather dumpy, which was a bit disappointing. Went in because I was craving some Chilli cheese fries and a Mexican hot dog. I had it here before and it was good.... however I don't know if it was an off day or the quality has just gone down because it's been about 6 months since I got it last. But this time the bread was hard like it was stale. The Chilli cheese fries tasted super weird I don't know if it was old grease or just the fries were fried before and refried or a combo of both just nasty I threw the whole thing away. Had this in my Yelp bookmark for awhile. Finally was able to stop by Hippo Burgers during Snovid-21. Although Houston was recovering fromt he snow and freezing temperatures, these guys opened their doors quicker than most other restaurants in the area. It is a counter service place and they bring it out to you. It was not very busy when we got there and the food came out very quickly. The workers were nice, nothing out of the ordinary. Went with just the regular Hippo burger, French fries, and a chocolate shake. All was fresh and delicious. You all definitely needs to get better control over salt seasoning. I have had issues in the past regarding overly salted burgers. They were so salty could feel the grittiness on every fry. It was so overpowering had to wipe it off of each fry. You all have been told countless times to ease up on the salt. After arriving back in Houston, I was looking for a meal close to the airport (George Bush Intercontinental). Hippo Burgers was pretty close so we made our way to Humble. I had heard of this burger joint for years so I was excited to finally try it. Even though hippos are highly dangerous animals who have quite the mean streak. I was able to overcome this. Hippo Burgers isn't located in the best part of town but hey, I'm all about the food. They have a small parking lot and parking wasn't an issue. Hippo Burgers is a casual spot. You order at the counter and then they bring your food out to you. I ordered the Hawaiian burger because you can never go wrong with anything with pineapple on it. If you're anti pineapple on food, we can't be friends. I also ordered the Cajun fries and a soft drink. I'm not sure if the cooks here are hippos but they know how to do a burger right. The burger patty was flavorful and it was served on a toasted bun. While the Cajun fries weren't spicy, the seasoning was good. All in all, a solid meal. They make excellent juicy homemade burgers with very good prices, and they're extremely popular with all the locals up here. They're not as good as a couple of my favourite burgers in the city, Lankford being top of the list, but they're definitely one of the top 10 in the Houston area, and definitely much better than all the fast food versions. They'd probably be more like a 4-star if it wasn't for the great service and the fact that we both really enjoyed the experience, and that there is not that much good food in the Humble portion of town, in the Northeast suburbs. So for these reasons I give it five stars. Little local places like this are amazing, taste wise and in terms of concept and bravery, and they need our support. And I hope that it stays in business for many years, because one of my favourite soul food places down the road just went out of business, and I'm rooting for these guys and I think they're pretty awesome. PSA: no drinks with the combos that are at least $8 + . We had a variety of food cause I went with my family of 4. Ehh, chicken tenders & onion rings were overcooked for our taste. Great find! Turns out they've got about six locations in the Houston area. Decided I'm just a burger and this was a whole lot more than that! Had the hippo mushroom burger which has everything you can imagine on it with onions and lettuce and tomato. The best part about it is it tasted like a really good hamburger! on top of that, of course was their bluebell milkshake. But that's beside the point. No, that is the point! I saw the reviews and thought let's try it out for Father's Day...Man to say I was disappointed would be an understatement! I got the bacon burger, and it was rough, I couldn't even get through a quarter of the burger! Was driving down Wilson to run an errand and almost stopped at McDonald's for a quick bite, but kept driving and about a half mile up the road (going North) I saw Hippo Burger. I have been on the one located on Atascocita Rd., but didn't know they had one on Wilson. If you know you know and if you don't know you need to stop in and give it a try. I got the Special burger, appearance was great, meat was thick, bun was fresh, loaded with all the trimmings (very pricey), atmosphere was good as well however when I started eating, I quickly realized it was extremely dry, the meat was way over cooked making it a 3 or less rating. I didn't realize they did not put either mayo or mustard on it and never asked me my preference when I ordered, could have been my fault. Not sure if you can request a med-well or not. I will try one more time down the road to see if they can do a better job. If they can't make a juicy burger, I don't see them being any better than Mickey D's which cost less than half as much. read more
