JJ Breakfast Tacos were amazing. They should put them in a bigger tortilla and just call them burritos. I opened the taco to add salsa and i couldnt even see the tortilla underneath all the filling. The place reminds me of what burger places used to be like in the 80's, before the big chains took over. Big portions and quality ingredients. I had the 1/2 pound burger with cheese and bacon. My opinion is that the burger was top of the line. The meat was cooked well and no gristle; the bacon strips were generous and very flavorful. I was intrigued by the Onion Rings so I paid a little extra for them, and they were wonderfully prepared. I will definitely be going there again. However, since they specialize for lunch I don't think they have a dinner service. Hence if you are lucky enough to be able to go for lunch, it's a genuine must in my humble opinion. read more

The shrimp po boy is served on a large toasted hot dog bun. It comes with just the bun and some fried shrimp on it and then you dress it at their fixings bar. I added some lettuce, tomato and a couple of squirts of ketchup. Since the most important part of a po boy is the bread this version didn't exactly excite me. This meal comes with one side and since their french fries looked to be the frozen out of the bag variety I asked for the potato salad. Theirs is a mustard based type and while the extra large scoop represented a lot of food it was rather dry. So dry that after 2 bites, I stopped eating it. I like my potato salad moist and creamier. The best part of this meal was that it only cost $9. In this case, you get what you pay for.... Yes, this could have been better (2). This restaurant has been in business for over 35 years and serves a wide variety of breakfast and lunch foods. Decent hole in the wall place! We were working in the area and decided to stop in. Looks like they mostly specialize in but they also have a variety of things like chicken fried steak, shrimp etouffee, and blackened fish. I'm trying to eat healthier, so I I had their grilled chicken salad. It was a good deal at $8.99. Chicken was tasty, and it was tender enough, but could have been slightly more tender. My mother in law lives down Gessner so while visiting from Dallas we decide to try this place because of the rating. There is no way this is a four star place. We didn't have the burgers and maybe that was our mistake. I had the catfish and shrimp special. It was awful The shrimp were over cooked, the batter tasteless and the catfish was about the thickness of a piece of thin cardboard. Both were poorly prepared. My wife had the po boy and boy was it poor. The shrimp looked like little balls, the tomatoes were mushy and the bread too soft to be used as a sandwich. It was so bad she didn't eat much of it. The potato salad on the hand was edible, but just barely. The ambiance in this place looks like it hasn't been changed in forever. The whole place smells a little like a restroom. They used the same air freshener I guess. It looks and feels like a very old place, which it is. The food was so bad that my wife and went to Chic Fila to get a chocolate shake just to make up for the bad lunch. I took a look at their grill and deep fryer. They look they have NEVER been cleaned. Passed by a few times, decided to grab something today just to try the place out. Great atmosphere, good for going out with friends or lunch out of the office. My brother in law works near the restaurant and suggested we meet for lunch one day. I'm not one to turn down a good burger so I was happy to check it out. It's a hole in the wall. The tables and chairs and décor is a hodge podge I'm sure they've collected over the years. It's what I expect from a hole in the wall. And honestly what I want for somewhere off the beaten path. They had more menu items than I originally expected. Everything sounded delicious, but I wanted to try their burger. I ordered the angus burger with cheese and a side of fries. Once you order to sit and wait for your number to be called. They burgers come naked and you apply your own toppings and sauces at the fixing bar. The burger was DELICIOUS! Excellent grilled flavor, the right amount of grease. Perfectly cooked. Everything I want from a hamburger! The fries were just okay. My brother in law had his extra crispy which made a world of difference. If you like crispy fries be sure to ask. Something fun they do is name burgers after people who order them. If you're willing to add an additional patty (or anything really) and purchase the burger they will name it after you. My brother in law said he'd been thinking about doing it for a while. All it took was a bit of encouragement and we now can all enjoy the 5 patty Jeremy burger. You're welcome. If you're in the area and looking for a good greasy burger this is definitely the spot. Sam's has got it going on! This little house hideaway reminds me of Bubba's Burger Shack. It feels super mom & pop, with a constant bustle of customers, too many specials to count, and a solid menu of sandwiches & burgers. I loved the outdoor seating options. You can sit on the patio at tables, or outside where there's a whole garden area with stone benches, tables and a boat for kids to play in. I ordered a protein plate (bun-less bacon cheeseburger with a side salad). It wasn't out of the world, but it was solidly good. They have all kinds of enticing dishes, from etouffee to homemade fried apple pie. I'll return on nice days to enjoy that outdoor lunch break. Definitely a cute little gem. read more

I drop in here 5-6 times a year and yesterday's visit did not disappoint. I had a craving for a BLT and onion rings and both were fantastic. Fresh bread, crispy lettuce and fresh sliced tomato to go along with the slight crispy but not overdone pile of bacon was perfect. The only reason for it not being 5-stars was I rec'd fries in my to go bag instead of O-rings. They charged me for fries which were great, so I might have mis-ordered. We passed this place going to Burger Tex a few times, and was intrigued by the giant hamburger on a pole in front of this place. It's an old house (two, actually, jammed together) that has been converted into a lunch spot. You walk in, order at the counter, and they call your number when your order is ready. They have a toppings bar off to the side so you can dress your burgers. The burgers are angus patties, and they are heavy and dense. The fries are typical crinkle-cut fries, nothing special. The burgers are pretty decent, and you do not feel hungry at all after you eat one. However, don't get the wrong idea, there is nothing truely outstanding about the burger. I've had much better (but I've also had MUCH worse). On other visits, I tried the chicken fried steak (tasted like a deep fried frozen patty, looked like it, too), nothing-too-special cream gravy, and canned green beans. Definately ranks pretty far down the list on CFS's I've had. And I hate places that serve canned veggies. If I wanted to eat canned veggies, I can open a can at home if I want. The charm of this place is how you're eating in an old house, I guess. They have a meatloaf that my co-worker swears is pretty tasty, but I fear meatloaf. read more

I loved the food! I enjoyed the bacon cheese basket and they give you plenty of fresh fries! I like how the onions are placed on the bottom of the toasted bun and tastes almost like sautéed onions instead of being thrown on the top with the lettuce and tomatoes like most burger places. Not all hole-in-the-wall joints are good. Sams isn't "bad..." but it simply "filled my gullet." I had the "angus burger" with fries (these have a remarkable resemblance to the frozen crinkle-cut fries served in school cafeterias around the country). The bun was blackened at two spots (ostensibly left on the griddle to heat/harden it) and the rest of the burger was fairly flavorless. Fries and the burger cost around $9. The prices aren't bad... but I'd rather spend that money elsewhere. After ordering from the counter at the front, you walk back to find a surprisingly spacious, very clean, simple "country-style" dining area. They also have a large patio. Burger "fixins" are at a little "bar" near the ordering area -- which you pass as you retrieve your food from the counter (they call-out your number). Really, it's a 2.5 star place. I'm just spoiled by having access to much better burgers. On the upshot, it's not pretentious, there's not a line, and the food isn't terrible. Save your money and get the regular/non-Angus burger. read more

I've had the patty melt once...It was decently filling although I believe there were delayed effects from all the butter, fat and white bread. On my 3rd visit a week or so ago I had to let my coworker know I just don't care for this place. Grilled chicken sandwich was this very thin cutlet cut into a square to fit the bun (think thin grilled Filet-O-Fish). And the fries were bleh. And also if you're sitting in the back area waiting for your number to be called, you can't hear squat. It's like they're speaking through a mic that is underwater.
