Wow! I'm not sure what I expected when booking a resy for brunch on a Sunday at State of Grace, but it completely exceeded my expectations. Extremely kind service from the hosts through the entire team. The best balance of conversational and storytelling without being overbearing. We never felt rushed and they made the experience feel personal, and felt we truly got to know the restaurant and reasoning behind a few of the dishes just through their excitement. We ordered coffees along with the crab hush puppies, gumbo, avocado toast, and ended with their massive cinnamon roll. It was the perfect spread and everything was so flavorful! (My only critique was I wish the cinnamon roll was warmed up and served with a bit more icing). The interior was fabulous with an amazing aroma. I would highly recommend for anywhere from an intimate date to a group brunch! Beautiful bar as well, I cannot wait to come again another night for dinner. She provided excellent service along with her assistant, Jonathan. Enjoyed an espresso martini & tried some of the carajillo! Appetizers were the highlight of this meal (minus the hamachi crudo; sauce was super weird). Enjoyed the woodfried oysters (6pc) & gulf crab hushpuppies. Oysters from Texas & Alabama were delicious! Faves were Key Allegro, Mermaid Tears, & Matagorda Pearls. Capo Hugo was alright. Sides: pommes puree (whipped potato) & wood grilled asparagus - these were good Got a bite of the overpriced burger and that was the best entree out of the ones that were ordered. Fries were delicious and addicting too! Classic blackened redfish was ok; nothing special. Le Entrecôte (steak frites) was also ok; some steak pieces were hard to chew. Was NOT a fan of the lobster fettuccine. Surprisingly bland and barely any lobster meat for the cost of that dish. Ended the night with dessert. Basque cheesecake tasted great! We decided to check out this place at the last min before leaving Houston. We walked in and waited for around 20 minutes to get seats at the bar, which was first-come, first-served. We started with some fresh oysters along with drink; half were from Alabama, and half were from Texas. I also ordered the crawfish benedict étouffée. It came with fried tomato, hollandaise sauce, and bacon. I really enjoyed it, especially the sauce! The ambiance was really nice, and the staff was very attentive. From the moment we arrived, the experience was impressive. Valet parking is available, and I highly recommend making a reservation ahead of time. The restaurant has an upscale yet welcoming atmosphere, perfect for a special night out. The service was phenomenal from start to finish. My party had quite an interesting dining experience. We visited on a Sunday morning and were glad to have a reservation because it was extremely busy. Parking is very limited and valet only, which is something to keep in mind. Our server was kind, but it was a bit unusual that several items he recommended were unavailable, including certain drinks and the burger due to an issue with the meat tool. We also waited about 20 minutes for our food, and by then we were definitely ready to eat. As for the food, the buttermilk biscuit was excellent. The jam tasted very fresh and paired perfectly with the biscuit. The griddle cakes, which I had seen on social media, were the highlight. They were soft, fluffy, and the syrup was so unique. The Croque Madame and the Crawfish Benedict Étouffée, however, were less impressive. They lacked flavor and felt more focused on presentation than taste. we came upon State of Grace when looking for a brunch spot on a Sunday morning. Unsurprisingly, it was booked full but after a 15-20 minute wait, 2 spots at the bar opened up. I started with the Zamora spritz. For $23, it better be a damn refreshing cocktail, and it surprisingly did not disappoint. Super well balanced. After, we had a dozen oysters, half from alabama and half from Texas. The oysters themselves were pretty fresh, and the thai chili sauce gave it a nice asian twist that has me salivating while I'm typing this The Croque Madame, two eggs on toast. It was so big I had a bit of a hard time figuring out how to eat it, but I cut it in half and figured it out. I went there for Sunday brunch with a few people. The restaurant is very pretty and the service was outstanding. The food presentation was excellent, and the restaurant was almost filled - people were having a nice time. The dress is fancy casual. My only problem with the restaurant (which is on the high end pricewise) is that they do not provide enough food - I left there hungry - I had the Eggs en Cocotte "Shakshuka". It would have been nice if they provided a basket of rolls or bread for the table but that is not done. All the portions were small, which was fine for my wife but not for me. A bit pricey and the settling seems very professional, or for special occasions but the food was good. The starters hush puppies and Octopus were very interesting, for the octopus it comes with peanuts I definitely would suggest getting that on the side as it might be an overwhelming flavor clash but it was delicious. Definitely would reorder. For the main courses definitely rank the Strip 1, Filet 2, and Redfish last. That Ny Strip was possibly the best NY Strip Ive ever had and I especially like the way it was presliced without asking for that. It had the tenderness of a ribeye and was cooked to perfection. But the best part about the whole experience was the complimentary ginger ice filled cookies that we were greeted with and got to leave with. Winning every time - Blue Crab Beignets are crispy on the outside, light and fluffy textured with whole corn on the inside, topped worth a fairy dusting of powered sugar and cane sugar butter on the side. Sweet and savory, just like heaven! Ailliann was delightful, making thoughtful recommendations and helping the kitchen come through with my new favorite Caesar Salad - snappy Romaine in a perfectly salty, lightly briney (comforting, but fresh) dressing. Also exceptional: the Tuna Salad (a play on words?) with six generous slices of perfectly seared Ahi bedded next to a heap of garden greens dressed in an Asian citrus vinaigrette (Serrano cooled by dill & avocado) - every bite thrilling and filling unlike any other salad I've had before. Worth coming back for this one again and again! Details are important, as the spacious interior with multiple seating environments accommodates all types of occasions (bar, business, events, and elegance). Went here during the lunch happy hour. They have valet parking. The parking lot is small so it would be hard to find parking especially on a busy night. The staff was exceptional here. I really liked the waitress we got. She was knowledgeable and actually enjoys eating the food here too. She was very attentive and noticed me wiping my hands on the napkin after eating some finger foods and offered wet cloths. She also made sure the table was clean from bread crumbs. The complimentary bread isn't the best here it's really hard and prefer more of the soft fresh bread. The inside is soft but the outside was very hard. I tried a bunch of oysters and my favorite was the isla d. You get a bunch of different dipping sauces as well-cocktail, Louisiana hot sauce, vinegar like dip, and spicy Asian oriented sauce. I enjoyed the spicy sauce and the louisana sauce with the oysters. They were small but they went down easy. Rating: 5 stars Also tried French fries which were on the soggy/soft side but I kinda like my fries like that. Rating: 4 stars The blue crab fingers were good it was in a nuoc mam type dip soaked in it and the flavors blended well especially with crab. They were easy to nibble on and get the meat out of the claws. They were definitely Asian inspired. Rating;5 stars The next meal was the fish and chips and the fish tasted a bit bland to me it's not like the traditional fish and chips you would normally find. Rating:1 star The octopus was really tender and soft I think it would've been better fried or more crunchy. The flavors were good though it had peanuts which paired well. It did not have a fishy flavor at all so they did good on that part and it wasn't chewy. The other meal was the gumbo and that was a really weird take on gumbo. I guess this is more of an acquired tastes but it didn't fit my palate. I didn't like this one. The sausages had some flavor but again the flavors were not it for me. Rating: one star Hamachi crudo: this was not it for me I don't think the coconut was a good combination with hamachi. It was more of a creamy flavor to it and I think it takes away from the fish. Well, I've made State of Grace one of my regular spots in Htown for good reason. I would unapologetically state that I am picky. I know what I like and I reward a business for following through time after time. SOG does this. If you're looking for a night out where you want to dress well, mingle with the right crowd, and eat/drink well in a sophisticated dim lit environment, this is your place. You will need to fork over some $$$, but that comes with the territory. My go to's are a caesar and blackened redfish (sauce on the side). If you want a lighter salad, I recommend the maison. The caesar is made in the open, and I have a long standing joke about who makes it the best (bartenders and servers make it). Shoutout to Parwaan (mgt) who makes the best caesar salad in town, and great service to boot. Also, Austin at the bar who consistently makes the best cocktails, even custom requests (aka "frenchie" martini per request). Houston restaurant experts, please convince me I'm wrong. If you want to be more indulgent, the DINNER burger (no bun) w/ fries is an excellent choice. When I eat red meat, I like going to a place that knows how to cook it properly. I get my burger pittsburgh (look it up if you don't know) medium. Their fries are among the best in Houston along with Bludorn. They taste great with the sauce it comes with but I would also mix ketchup w/ their house made hot sauce for a hot tang. Their shrimp cocktail is a good value if you're wanting to keep things light. Finally, I'm not a big dessert guy by choice bc I prefer to drink Parillas. But, I've had some of the best desserts (if not THE best) here between the souffle and chocolate sundae brownie. One of the most underrated steakhouses in Houston. The petite filet mignon is the best steak I've had at any steakhouse. It needs absolutely no additions or sauces. It's cooked perfectly every time, and the quality of the meat is outstanding. I also have to rave about the French onion soup. It's easily the best I've had anywhere. Even though it's packed with onions, they never overpower the other flavors. The toasted bread and melted cheese balance everything perfectly. The Caesar salad was also a 10 out of 10--truly excellent. Every time I go, the staff is extremely friendly and very knowledgeable about the menu, including off-menu items and any specials they have going on. The service always adds to the overall experience. And I can't forget their famous Pecan Ball dessert. It's fantastic and something I can never leave without ordering. What interested me was the pancakes in the influencer's video...i didn't check the menu before so I dragged my friends to this restaurant with selfish intentions (LOL) There is Valet parking in front of the restaurant that is tip based which is awesome! The cacaphony of discordant off kilter saxophone for 2 hours was enough to set anyone's teeth on edge. As for the food, I enjoyed a glass of Gruner Veltiner and my husband an "1803" cocktail. We sat at the bar and split "Chicken Limone", a greasy dish of chicken pieces sprinkled with a haphazard stringy bunch of watercress. The roasted asparagus was good, if not $14 for 6 spears good. The Frites were thick cut/deep fried ($14) but it cost an extra $9 to get a side of aioli. So $23 for fries and sauce. I still have a headache from the horrible music. Given that Houston has so many great restaurants at this price point, it's unclear how this place stays in business. read more

It has been quite a while since I enjoyed a meal at State of Grace. We used to love it but in recent years felt that the food had gone down hill. We were excited when the menu revamp was announced and made a Saturday night dinner reservation with friends. Upon arrival we were seated in the small side room that is used for private dining. Originally disappointed to not be in the main dining room, it ended up being nice because it was fairly quite. We placed cocktail drink right away but they didn't make it to the table for around 20 minutes. This remained the case for the entire meal. Things we liked - the complimentary bread service, tuna tartare. Things we didn't like - everything else. The filet, asparagus and cacio e pepe were all drowning in salt and butter. The chicken was just ok and even the texas pecan ball was too salty. The entrance is shut off from the restaurant so you don't have a breeze coming through or street noise filtering into the dining room. While the décor wasn't my personal style, it was so beautifully done that I couldn't help but admire it. No detail was left behind, but it was far from overboard. Even the portfolio the bill came in was thoughtful. Our server was incredibly knowledgeable, not just on their menu, but on the wines offered. She made an excellent recommendation that worked for the wine and non-wine fans, she provided detail on the menu and was overall just an absolute delight. From the freshly chopped salad to the crab cake beignets to my filet mignon. The flavor of the filet mignon was incredible, the crispy eggplant had a little zip and the fries - the FRIES! If you check my bio, you will see that I know my fries. When the server told us how they were prepared, we HAD to get them. Absolutely everything was on point. I enjoyed a lovely meal here. The vibes are great, cocktails are delicious as is the food. Walking in the hostess greets you and directs you to your table. We were seated on the opposite side of the bar. The bar is quite large and is fully stocked. There's also a raw bar area and separate dining rooms as well. Bryan was a wonderful server, he explained the wines very well comparing tastes and notes of what we preferred. I opted to have a blueberry lemon mule, don't quite remember the name. It was refreshing and nicely balanced. We started off with the hush puppies, they were golden fried, crisp and delicious. The blue crab wasn't too prominent but there was a taste of seafood and pops of sweetness from the corn. It is also dusted with confectioners sugar but it didn't take away from the dish. We also shared a salad, "butter lettuce" Bryan had recommended since we are partial for a good wedge salad. It was nicely dressed in a creamy oregano sauce with bits of crunchy croutons and pistachios. For my entree I had the Pansotti. There were round ravioli stuffed with pureed corn, marscapone, topped with spiced pepitas and cotija cheese. It's definitely unique but I love corn and I love the sweetness the corn brings to the dish, it's also finished with the cane syrup butter which rounds out the flavor. The bread. Oh so good. Warm, soft, pillowy, light as a milk bun. Served with softened cane syrup butter that was oh so delicious. Will return just for the bread. I loved the vibe of the place - it looks like an old bank, but smells like a high end BBQ restaurant when you walk in. Here's what we tried.... Brazos River Blues: 4-stars. A solid cocktail that I could drink on a regular basis. Anything with ginger beer is a winner for me. Bread and Butter: 5-stars. This wasn't your standard bread and butter. The butter was essentially ice cream. We didn't even plan on ordering this, but my friend saw it come out to another table and we felt like NOT ordering it would be illegal. Hushpuppies: 4-stars. Very much a combination of sweet and savory, which I appreciate, but I would have preferred they just lean into one or the other. Grilled Peaches and Blueberries: 4-stars. A very creative dish that offered a lot of different things that I loved. But I also thought there might have been some un-advertised goat (or other gamey) cheese in here, which bumped it down a star for me. House fries: 4-stars. Enjoyable french fries, but I think I would have preferred a different sauce other than bearnaise. Diver Scallops: 5-stars. Scallops done perfectly. The only negative, which is always the case with scallops, is that you don't get a ton of meat for the money. Trofie: 5-stars. Neither of us knew what trofie was, so I Googled it and we were satisfied enough to give it a shot. It turns out, it was absolutely excellent. There was a kick, but the flavor was amazing. Chocolate Dessert: 5-stars. I never saw this on the menu, as our server just told us about it, so I don't know what it was actually called. It had multiple layers of chocolate with a big scoop of vanilla ice cream in the middle and a bunch of crunchy stuff in between. I loved it very much. So 8 items, with four 4-star ratings and four 5-star ratings. The tie breaker for me is that when I got home, I was having some seriously intense stomach pain. In fairness to State of Grace, my friend was totally fine, so I'm not implying that I was served something that had gone bad. But I was torn between 4 and 5 stars and the tie breaker has to go to the writhing pain I was in. Maybe it was whatever was spicy in the trofie because as I write this the next day, I still have heartburn. But with that being said, I would absolutely dine here again. We order the grand and it was mid. Not gonna lay it on thick on this one. It took like 45 mins to get it to our table. Not my first time to state of grace but could be my last. Sorry I was just not impressed this time. read more

Heard about the $1 oysters for happy hour. VERY GOOD for Gulf. There's also PEI selections for $3.95.. not bad. I was honestly most impressed that this restaurant truly understands hospitality and service. Bravo to the staff & MGMNT. We will back 100%!! Thank you. read more

This has to be the cutest little slice of heaven. We went there last week for a team dinner although this was my first time there it was not a first time for everyone else. It has been a favorite for them, and I can see why. Had a mix of vintage feel on the inside, which made me feel very happy. They had a station where some of the food was being made which the banana foster was made and then brought to our table. The server overheard that someone was pregnant at our table and, celebrated us in the end by bringing us desserts. It was such a great time and such great service. I will be back time of time again. Went to State of Grace for a business dinner, and overall, it was a good experience. The ambience is upscale and elegant, making it a great spot for a professional gathering or a special occasion. Service was attentive and polished, which added to the experience. I ordered the lasagna, and while it wasn't a traditional take on the dish, it was still really good--rich, creamy, and flavorful. The restaurant was good! It was decorated very well and the ambiance was just right. The restaurant was full but we could still hear each other since it isn't crowded together. Our waitress Riley was great and very informative and attentive. The initial rolls they give you are delicious! Our appetizer of the hush puppies was very good as well! Our main entrees were the redfish, pansotti, tagleotelle, and the chicken. The redfish and chicken both were very good and got 5 star reviews. The pasta dishes both got 4 star reviews. They were good but not super flavorful or over the top tasty. Our sides surprisingly were the star! The eggplant and enchilada was probably our favorite thing we got!! For dessert we ordered the cheesecake and pecan ball and both were spectacular and I would order again! I would recommend and would come back! read more
