I've eaten at this Black Walnut location a couple of times over the years. I've never had any issues, until my most recent visit back in November 2025. The restaurant is connected to one of the main parking garages. The first two hours are free which is convenient. It has a more casual feel because of the counter service setup. I like that they have a large menu. We visited on a Sunday afternoon which meant we had the option to order from the brunch menu. The dining area is a good size and they also have a nice patio which is where we sat. The staff was nice, but they were slow at times. The biggest issue was with the food. I ordered the Chicken Tenders which came with Fries and Honey Slaw. I also ordered a side of Broccoli. The Fries and Broccoli were cold while the Cole Slaw was too salty for my taste preference. The Chicken Tenders and dipping sauces (Cayenne Ranch and Honey Mustard) were tasty. One of my dining companions sent some of her food back because it was also served cold. One of the employees was going to reheat her food, and she had to ask for a new order to be brought out (which they reluctantly did). For my beverage I had the Blueberry Spritz which is a mocktail. It was very good and refreshing, but took quite a while to be brought to the table. I ordered the chicken lettuce wraps, and with the current Cyclospora concerns involving leafy greens, I would have expected the restaurant to be especially diligent about washing and inspecting its lettuce. Out of all the spots, Black Walnut seemed like the perfect place for us. You can order at the counter for quick service or you can go ahead and be seated where staff will come by and take your order. We opted for the latter. There was plenty of seating. We were quickly welcomed and taken care of. Everyone got their drinks prompted. I personally got the pastrami dip. On first impressions, the cheese made the whole sandwich look plastic. It's almost like the sandwich was plucked out of a display and placed on a plate. In terms of actual taste, it's not too bad. When you pair it with the au jus, it's especially good. The bread is nice and hearty - perfect vehicle for everything. The side Italian salad was good. I have been going to Black Walnut for years and there are several reasons why I keep going back. For one, their menu is huge! Every time I try one thing, I immediately want to visit to try the rest. The restaurant itself is spacious, neat and beautiful. The liveliness adds to the ambiance. The servers are friendly and helpful, with prompt and respectful service. Whether dining it or picking up, the experience has always been positive. And not least of all the food. I LOVE the Asian glazed Atlantic salmon meal. The cook on the fish is perfect and the flavors pair excellently with the mashed potatoes. The quantity is large and filling, making a great meal. The chicken cobb salad is also fresh and very tasty. I was surprised to see vindaloo wings on the menu and was delighted by the appetizer. The marinade was tangy, but not too spicy. There was a staff member passing out menus and he also took mimosa orders if you wanted to sip while you waited in line to order your food. Tables are a seat yourself first come first serve style. It comes with 3 mini pancakes, 2 eggs any style, 2 choices of meat, and choice of grits or potatoes. I love their pancakes! They are fluffy and the batter tastes great by itself. The apple chicken sausage is also very yummy and has a little sweetness to it. I also love me some yellow corn grits! It was creamy and hearty. I loved everything about my plate. Hubby ordered the steak and eggs plate. He was able to switch out the flour tortillas for corn instead. He enjoyed his breakfast but his two critiques was that the portion of steak was a little small and they barely gave him any avocado. The server was able to get him a little more avocado. Lettuce was fresh and there was a good amount of dressing, but nothing memorable. Brussels Sprouts: Pretty good flavor--just wished they were a bit crispier. Wings: Started off tasty... until my boyfriend bit into the last one and it was pink and undercooked. Pretty gross and definitely killed his appetite. We didn't say anything at the time, so to be fair, they didn't get the chance to make it right. Pot Roast: Decent. Mashed potatoes were creamy, mushrooms cooked well, but my portion had quite a bit of fatty pieces (to be fair, not unusual for pot roast). Strawberry Shake: Fantastic! Strawberry purée, whipped cream, and a fresh strawberry on top--highly recommend. Chocolate Cake: Good, though not as rich and chocolaty as I was hoping. Big portion, which was nice. For my appetizer, I chose the new Texas state salad and for my entree, I went with the new pork belly bbq burger. It was like I could imagine in my mind what the combinations of each dish would taste like. They also have a house side salad and ceaser salad for 3.50 but it's not on the menu. They also have a separate desserts menu. My friend ordered the chicken fried steak with mashed potatoes and white cream gravy. I've said it before and I'll say it again, I love sharing food with my dining companion! Their gravy with my fries were phenomenal! Put that ketchup to shame! Doemanique was our server. She was friendly and very attentive. Chuy, the manager, came by a couple of times to check that all was well and asked for our honest opinion of the food. I let him know that the salad itself was good but the dressing fell short. For a vinaigrette, it was missing that zing. The burger could have used a little more bbq sauce. Other than that, it had a good flavor. It's good to know that management thought enough to ask the customers for feedback so he knows what's working and what's not. To end our meal, we each had a warm chocolate chip cookie...umm umm yummy! You can pay for parking in the lot, but there is a garage nearby that allows you to park for free for 2 hours! I ordered the chicken parm and an iced vanilla latte.
