This place could be amazing. 1. The pricing is good value and the coffee is good. Here's the improvements. 1. Don't assume everyone is a regular. I recently moved to Houston so saw this and thought to check them out. By not asking if ive been here before they messed up. 1st, no one told me the food comes with a complimentary banana. Not on the menu. No signs. Nothing. I'm allergic. They had to remake my food which is a waste for them too and embarrassing for me. 2. Comes with toast. Great. Amazing. Thanks. Again. Not asked what bread I wanted, did I want jam and butter. 3. No water given. No water stations. No jugs. Nothing. 4. Dirty tables not cleaned quickly. Maaan. I haven't been to Epicure Cafe in a long minute. But my dad's recent birthday inspired me to re-order one of his favorite cakes. Dunno why I haven't made this an annual order, but the pistachio cake still-as the kids say-slaps. It's light, not too sweet, and has a lot of pistachio and pistachio flavor. Goes GREAT with coffee and tea. I do think the cake layers were a bit too thin; which can be overpowered by the icing. Perhaps it was our batch but I don't remember the cake layers being so thin and sparse. read more

As of this review, Epicure Café has been around for roughly 35 years, and I only noticed it upon a recent visit to the nearby River Oaks Theatre. This place is wonderful and worth visiting. I tried a burger and fries on my first visit, and I'll definitely return for their tempting pastries. The space was comfortable, and the service was excellent. Decided to stop here yesterday after being in the area. I was on the search for breakfast food and the lady at the counter let me know they still had breakfast at 2 pm (score!) I ordered the turkey croissant which came with scrambled eggs and spinach. It was delicious! The portion was super generous and also came with half of a banana on the side. It was truly an amazing sandwich! After seeing all of the pastries, I could not leave without getting a couple. I ended up ordering a cheese danish and a fruit tart to go. Both pastries were amazing! They really know what they are doing here. It was my first time having a legit cheese danish (one not from starbucks) and I feel like it changed my life. No joke LOL. Taking one star off because the young lady at the register was visibly annoyed the entire time I was ordering... I had lunch at the Epicure Cafe on Saturday, 5/4/20205. The restaurant is under new management and I was pleased that the ambience was still welcoming, calming. The young ladies at the counter were friendly and efficient and the manager took time to come to our table to make sure that we were enjoying our meal. So, great service. The food was fantastic. I had a chicken avocado sandwich on a croissant that was very good. My friend enjoyed her burger. We ordered cake and enjoyed that as well. I have given only four stars because of the expense. Two sandwiches, two sodas, two desserts cost over $50! I know that everything these days has become expensive but that is a hefty bill for two lunches. read more

I went in this morning to get 2 cakes. I asked to write "h bday" on 1. After paying and waiting 20 minutes, I realized the chef was at a different location and were waiting for her to come write "happy bday"! Not 1 person told me that she wasn't there! Why would they think that I could wait around doing nothing! I ended up leaving without anything written and not even an apology. And no manger to make a complaint but 1 of the new owners was there and didn't have the decency to excuse how I was treated! One of my favorite desserts place in town. Especially the pistachio cakes. Every time we are here for coffee:tea and cake I ordered the pistachio one. Sometimes we also ordered the whole cake for birthday. So yummy. Haven't come back since the pandemic and it's still good as always. Epicure was pretty good! I wasn't blown away but also enjoyed everything we got. Met my friend here early on a Friday afternoon and it was decently busy, we opted for one of the outdoor bistro tables to enjoy the nice weather. My friend got a berry lemonade which she said was good, but there was a craaaazy amount of berry pieces at the bottom. She also got a berry tart that was yummy! I went for an iced chai latte and a breakfast croissant sandwich which I loved! My food and drink took a while to come out, but I enjoyed it nonetheless. If you can't find parking out front (or if the neighboring construction is still going on) there's a parking lot in the back with a lot more spots! read more

This is my best friend's go to place for brunch and I'm always happy to drive down to enjoy the amazing foods. I saw that they had a sausage, potato, and collard greens soup and wondered how it would taste. I was offered a small cup and was greatly pleased with the soup! I never thought that combination would be so tasty. So, I did the pick two and had the soup along with the chicken salad half sandwich. Fantastic! I've never had anything that wasn't over the too great tasting, even something as simple as their egg breakfast. And if you really want to splurge, save room (or plan to take out) dessert. This review is about one of their cakes. A friend brought a cake to another friend's birthday, and it was so delicious that I took the name of the place. The problem is that I don't remember which cake it was. I seem to remember chocolate, but I could be wrong. Maybe it's the plum tarte since I like those too? Or was it tiramisu? Regardless, looking through the reviews seem to say that their pistachio gelato is a fan favorite as is their cake. Sounds like I'll have to pay a visit and try a few. This place was about what I expected. Nothing was great, nor bad. It's a safe choice for brunch, or a small lunch. They do have lots of cake & dessert options. Berry lemonade was too sweet and the berries did not add much, they were soggy in the drink. The French toast sandwich was good, but it was missing something. The bread was dry and so were the eggs. In and out with one mission - pistachio cake. After getting the thumbs up from the employee that this is indeed their best seller, I swiftly picked up a slice to go. From past reviews, I was prepared for a small thin slice, but actually for $4.50, it isn't that bad. Maybe a tad high but not outrageously surprising, especially when considering the cake is made with pistachios. The cake itself is beautiful on the outside with neat, organized layers of alternating cake and a whipped pistachio cream (confirmed it is not buttercream). The cake itself was lightly soaked and the cream layer wasn't scant with pistachios at all! I love how the outside is crusted with pistachio pieaces and the top is sprinkled with white shavings and more pistachios. Best part is that it's a lighter dessert, so you don't feel guilty after haha. My only critique is that I wish it was stronger in pistachio flavor. Definitely got the texture but not as much flavor as I would have liked. read more

If you're ever in the River Oaks area watching a movie at the classic Landmark theatre this is the perfect place to grab a bite before the film starts! A quaint little cafe that serves up salads, sandwiches and pasta dishes as well as some awesome desserts. This is so convenient for lovers of indie films as my wife and I are. It is literally next door to the theatre and you don't feel rushed to make the movie in time. Parking is best across the street at the free parking garage. The staff is friendly and the bread is complimentary. Since we were still pretty full from lunch my wife and I split the River Oaks combo which was chicken salad and tuna salad with a sliced avocado. First time here and I love their beef goulash. It was served with veggies and rice. So flavorful and filling! It looks as good as it taste. My sister and I were walking by and I saw the display of sweets deep inside so I looked up the place. Despite the mediocre rating, one thing popped out: pistachio cake. We exchanged looks and decided to take a quick break. There's outdoor seating (not much - 2 or 3) and plenty of tables inside. They do have a good amount of patrons. Cleanliness seemed fine. However - that display of desserts! There are whole cakes, lime tarts, strawberry napoleons, cake slices, cookies.... they have a menu of hot and savory items like soups and sandwiches. A note though: the sweets are generally labeled but don't include the prices. We headed up to the counter and picked up the menu and opted to share a slice of pistachio cake and the house made berry lemonade, no ice. However, it took some time before someone finally took our order. There was someone and she sort of just poked at things and finally looked up then called someone in the back who finally took our order. You pay there and you'll get a number if you ordered something from the kitchen. We didn't so they were handed to us there. The cake was on the small side but it looked quite decadent. The alternating layers of cream and cake weren't even at all but it was delicious - plenty of pistachio nuts and perfectly sweet topped with coconut shavings. It was excellent and it made me excited to try their other sweets. I shared with my sister and we probably got about 4 forkfuls (not very full forkfuls - girl halves?) each. The good thing was they included two forks for us. The berry lemonade had about 2 or 3 halved strawberries floating in it. It was a brilliant red color (probably not very natural) and we found it to be on the sweet side... until we drank it after we tried the cake. Then it was tart. The strawberries were on the sour side, though. All in all, not bad! They have the restrooms located in the back right corner. It's a single room so there will likely be a line for the women's restroom. It was fairly clean. I also spotted to go containers for your food on the right wall - self serve. Though the food was good for the most part, it's not very reasonably priced. For the two items, it was $10. The cake could be bigger; I had spotted larger slices or at least slice more evenly. Service could be improved by a lot. It was very impersonal, lackluster, on the slow side, and it seemed like the people weren't into it. I would consider stopping by again to try something new if I'm in the area. If/once I do, I'll update my review accordingly. read more
