I don't know what people are expecting from a diner, but this location is great. The prices and menu are cheaper than the Franks near 290 and I wonder if they are owned by the same people despite the common name. Supposedly the guys that owned Frank's also owned their nearby competitor Telwink Grill at one point. Not only are they cheaper but the portions are bigger at this Franks than the 290 one. Their catfish is also has a cornmeal coating rather than batter so you definitely get a different taste. The flesh is mild enough to make me think it is swai. Getting half grits and half hash browns are like full portions at other diners. Weekday lunches have no crowd so that will be the times I will stop in from now on. I was looking high and low for a breakfast spot here on the south side of Houston and due to many praises- I came here. I did not come to be awed by aesthetics, I came to experience Houston in its element and EAT GOOD. I'm so glad I listened and tried this place out. I wanted a southern comfort breakfast and I got just that. Fried fish ( I love that cornmeal is used and not just plain flour) with grits, scrambled eggs, with two freshly baked biscuits. As you can see, the portions are generous and the price you cannot beat! I came around 930 AM and there were a handful of guests already seated, but as I was enjoying my meal the people were piling in. The fish was so good and I added plenty of butter on top of my biscuits and grits. The biscuits were warm and tender with an airy texture. I'm not the type to put sugar in grits- please keep it savory! They were made perfectly and tied the meal together. I wanted the peach mango juice but they unfortunately ran out, but the cranberry raspberry juice was a nice alternative. The waitress always checked on me despite looking after numerous parties which I appreciated. This place is a no frills breakfast place. It's cheap. Its packed. And the turnover is quick! Stopped by again on Sunday, after about a 10-15 minute wait, we were seated. After 5-10 minutes, our server came and took our drink order and food orders. I only saw her twice after that, to deliver the food and to deliver the check. Do not expect seasoned food. It's open seating, so pick a table any table. I think people go there for breakfast, but it was 1... my brain and stomach was telling me I needed to order off lunch menu. Chicken royal but make it lettuce wrap with fries please. I should've just ordered it the way it came on the menu but I wanted to be special *smh*. The lettuce wasn't really wrapped around grilled chicken and fixins so it just slid. The mushrooms were canned mushrooms and sat on top of the melted cheese. If you like good diner food I think this is the place to go! I went for late breakfast on a Sunday around 12pm and there was no wait but still pretty crowded so it's a little on the louder side but no problem for me. The service is what you would expect at a diner in my opinion but nonetheless the food was good and it came out pretty fast. The portions being serviced here to me are huge I had an omelette that I had to take to go and my friend had the chicken tenders and waffles which by the way comes with an ENTIRE basket of tenders not just 2-3 served on top. This is one of my favorite breakfast orders and my go to anytime I don't want to cook breakfast. One order is easily split between two people. Comes with 2 large catfish filets, coated with a crispy corn meal and fried perfectly. Also two eggs made any way you like and two sides. Yum! Now if you pass the family dollar that's across the street you passed it completely. Walked in and had to seat myself so I found a seat and music was enjoyable. Then comes my waitress she gives me a menu and I order my food. I got the wings and waffle with a side of eggs everything is so high now. Waited a while for my food to be done it took maybe 5-10 minutes. Ate my food waffle was tasty and eggs needed salt and pepper to my liking and could have been on the stove a little longer. This used to be one my favorite spots for breakfast. Went there today and the food quality and taste has really gone down. The service is ok. I would rather you tell me that they don't have biscuits as oppose to bringing me overcooked. Asked for mini waffles. Didn't bring them until we finished all of our meal. And they were raw. The food was just okay. Nothing too spectacular here. The portion sizes were good but the food was just missing something. Maybe seasoning, maybe a secret ingredient but I didn't really feel moved by the food. The staff was friendly and the restaurant was clean but the food wasn't it. This is a place to go and get a nice breakfast for a little money. My go to dish here is pork chops and waffles. The waffle is nice and crispy and I've never had a bad waffle here. I think if this place as kinda like a diner. The service is decent, and the foot traffic is definitely present so you know something in there keeps people coming back. The two stars come from the expired Minute Maid Juice, the year was 2022! It was so rancid, not good at all. I'm in town visiting a friend and we decide to pop in somewhere for brunch before I go back to the airport. We decide on Franks because it's close to the airport, the reviews were decent and everyone else has an insane wait time for brunch! First sign we see taped to the window is "Waitresses needed." Uh oh.. this may not be so good. After waiting about 10 minutes we were escorted to our table by one of the waitresses working. It's a large place and some of the area was closed for seating(probably not enough staff to accommodate seating in the area. Service was a tad bit slow and not as attentive as I'm used to but we braced ourselves for it. The table next to us left a mess of straws, food and napkins on the floor. It was a little distracting having to look at the mess(that the girl bussing the tables neglected to address this) but I got that they were understaffed. Our food comes out and listen all was forgiven. My friend ordered Chicken and waffles and I ordered Catfish and grits. Sorry But not sorry we couldn't grab more pictures. -Food was piping hot, seasoned to perfection and downright delicious. -My fish was super fresh and the chicken was cooked perfectly! -My friend said her waffle was so good and the biscuit I was served was so fluffy and light! However... -my grits were bland. Cook them with a touch of cream and add some salt to those suckers! -I asked for cheese eggs and I received a mound of cold shredded cheese on top of my hot eggs. Next time just fold the cheese into the eggs while scrambling before you take em off the grill. Franks is definitely a secret spot in Houston that deserves some shine. I went to the new location and it's nice. Parking wasn't bad. The staff is friendly, but they maybe understaffed. It took a long time to order and to get the wait staff's attention because they are so busy. They only had two people serving the entire restaurant. That was a bit frustrating. As for the food, I ordered the chicken fried chicken and it was flavored just right! Delicious! The hash browns are mashed - just the way I like them. The biscuits were overcooked - but I asked for some gravy and that worked (with some tobacco sauce). I think would have preferred toast or a waffle. I only give them 3 stars because of the service.
