Ms. Betty's was a late-night discovery when we first visited Houston. Although it may not seem like much from the outside or based on the area it's in, trust me when I say it's worth the trip. The biggest things you need to be aware of are (1) it's cash only (2) about half of their items can be ordered a la carte (3) there isn't much of a dining room (this is strictly a grab and go) (4) and if you come late at night, be prepared to order. This is a no-nonsense, direct experience. It's not a place to feel warm and fuzzy. Their food isn't gourmet by any means, but it's certainly better than most fast food options and also less expensive. I really enjoyed their fish sandwich ($6.50) that was 90% fresh white fish fillet with a thin layer of cornmeal for a slight crunch. You absolutely have to try their chili cheese fries too. For $10 you get a huge portion of fries that are slightly soft but retained their crinkle, tons of gooey cheddar cheese, and perfectly seasoned chili. It's more than enough for two people to enjoy as a main dish. If you're looking for a late night spot or just need a snack, you can't go wrong with Ms. Betty's.

This is a very hole in the wall, no frills restaurant. It is very old school and you order and take your food to go. Seems like one of the few actual late night places (closes at 3am). The owner, I assume ms betty, has a very get shit done attitude, which I enjoyed. She RUNS the restaurant and will tell you what's up. I'm sure her attitude can be off putting but she chatted with me and gave my partner and I free sodas. Turns out she's an immigrant from Macau and had been in Houston for 35 years, so hats off to her! Foodwise, they have burgers, wings, and various dinner platters all at very affordable prices. I got chili cheese fries and a hamburger and both were excellent. The fries were crisp with nacho cheese sauce and chili on top and the burger was very large and tasty. Definitely a spot I'll be returning to when I have cravings in the middle of the night!

The inside definitely has a Cajun feel to it with the decor; very Louisiana. I was greeted and made the 4th quarter decision to get a muffuleta, chips and a canned pop. My order came quickly and I was on my way. The sandwich itself was BIG. Loved the olive salad. The cuts of meat were quality. Prices are reasonable Loved it. Worth the visit if you can.

So when I decided to give Angelo Z's a try, I came in hopeful but ready to judge with the precision of a seasoned shrimp connoisseur. First, I'll give credit where it's due: the place is designed beautifully. Clean, inviting, well thought-out décor. The staff? Top-notch. Friendly smiles, fast service -- the kind of welcome that makes you want to pull up a chair and stay awhile. But then my shrimp po'boy arrived. And that's where things took a turn. The bread was toasted -- yes, toasted -- which, for a Louisiana po'boy, is already a red flag. To make matters worse, it wasn't even the traditional French bread that's light, airy inside, and has that delicate crackle on the crust. Instead, it was a dense, over-toasted loaf that crunched like I was chewing on a roofing shingle. Then came the real deal-breaker: I bit in and realized the shrimp hadn't been deveined. At all. And for anyone who knows seafood, that black line running down the back isn't some "seasoning" -- it's grit and waste. One glance at that and my appetite clocked out. I understand I'm not in Louisiana anymore, and I'm all for creative spins on classics, but there's a line between "putting your own twist" on something and missing the fundamentals altogether. Unfortunately, this missed the mark in a way I couldn't overlook. Beautiful space. Wonderful people. But for me? A shrimp po'boy that isn't deveined, on the wrong bread, and toasted into oblivion isn't a po'boy worth coming back for.

French bakeries, in general, make me throw all diet caution into air and go crazy with food-  but, not this particular Paris Baguette- not my favorite Variety is great, no doubt. Staff is super sweet and friendly. No problem there either.  The food itself:   For example- I bought the garlic croissant excited that it would be savory and interesting, but it came with a sugar coating ! No... Then the simple bread and butter, soft and all, but that also has a sweet tinge...I got the NY cheese cake, found it too hard.., a cake, I forgot which one , it was dry....So... I love to go here, because I can avoid going crazy..... ha ha..... I am fond of their soufflé cheesecake and the rainbow cake- haven't had any trouble with those yet.  Today I tried their berry croffle, melt in the mouth, light sweet, just right !Also, would like to try their baguettes, I reallyy hope those don't have sugar tinge in them.  Keep savory as savory and sweet and sweet, separate, why make all savory sweet too !  The color of the chairs sets the French tone. They have a vast selection and there is so much I am yet to try.  Its pretty popular in the area so am sure I will be brought back by others,  like a place to meet for coffee or something....

I tried to get the man behind the counter to understand that I wanted half a muffaletta, with no mayo. I expressed this in several different ways, because the confused expression on his face indicated that none of it was registering. In the end I gave up and accepted the whole, giant sandwich wheel. It wasn't till I got home that I realized he'd misunderstood more than just the size I was asking for. I can't tell you how much I despise mayonnaise (unless I'm having a BLT, and am thoroughly in charge of the application of the condiment). Why would it even be an option, mayo on a muffaletta? It would be just as ridiculous to have to specify "no ketchup" on one. I don't mean to come off as overly dramatic, here, but that bite was more harmful to me than anything that has ever happened to anyone in the history of humankind. You're probably thinking, "He-LLO . . . Have you seen Schindler's List?" And you may have a point. I sat through that whole film just letting valuable hours pass me right by. But this sandwich thing was even worse. So, after all that bitching, why the five stars, Mike? Because I know it would have been good without the mayonnaise. And because I remember the old Antone's. Not gonna let one assassination attempt ruin that history. I can't go back until I'm completely fluent in Spanish, though. Como se dice "mayo" in espanol?
