I waited about 10-15mins for the fresh batch, it is very jiggly (as you can see in the video) and custardy. It's lacking some eggy flavour, and the tart case not is not what i expected, as it's lacking in layers and not flaky, it is quite crispy though. Still a pretty nice tart, and I am quite happy with it given the price and size! ~ Hong Kong Style Milk Tea ~ It's pretty authentic! However I got the iced one, so the ice diluted the taste a lot. I ended up getting a hot one to go so I can chill it at the fridge and drink it cold at home. It's indeed quite good with the strong slightly bitter Ceylon tea flavour! I got here at 11am and they already ran out of Cha to siu bao. I got the last 3 and didn't want to wait since the already waited in line for a while. So I got other types of breads. I didn't get to taste the charsiu BAO but seems like they only put little bit of meat. I got the egg tarts right out of the oven . It comes 6 that a box and it was piping hot. Couldn't wait to eat it so we ate it for breakfast while it's still hot. It was extremely soft, silky ,not too sweet and did not fall apart since it's still hot. The crust was thin, not sweet, not oily to touch ( since it requires oil to make the dough. Just perfect for breakfast. Now it's the next day, and eating the Dan ta cold is as good as when it's hot. BLUF: Our favorite Chinese-style Portuguese Egg Tarts in New York City; found only in Brooklyn. Xin Fa Bakery (新發餅店), part of the Lily Bloom bakery chain, offers one of the best Chinese-style Portuguese Egg Tarts (pastél de nata; 葡撻) in New York City. Their tarts are $1.75 each, and are uniquely at least 50% larger, if not twice as large as the competition. We haven't found egg tarts this large anywhere else in New York, as Lily Bloom locations are all in Brooklyn. Xin Fa's Portuguese egg tarts come piping hot when ordered by the box, and are somewhat bland if eaten hot. But given several hours to cool and congeal into a proper custard, these egg tarts turn out to be pretty good. Xin Fa's Portuguese egg tarts have a dense filing, with a lightly sweet, eggy, slightly caramelized flavor; but these tarts lack the flaky crust typically associated with pastéis de nata. By comparison, egg tarts from Bakers of All Nations (a Portuguese bakery in Mineola, NY) are also $1.75 each, are slightly less dense, and have a sweeter, more intense flavor. This place is famous for egg tarts for good reason. They're amazing. But if you don't speak Chinese, it's not an ideal experience. EGG TARTS: Texture, flavor, and they come out hot because they're just constantly making them due to the demand. Creamy, sweet but not too sweet. YUM. They sell other pastries too, I just have only ever gotten the egg tarts. SERVICE: In the middle of Brooklyn Chinatown, it's mostly Chinese that's spoken here (I'm guessing Mandarin but I don't actually know being a non-speaker). My main complaint about the service is that their system is super disorganized. You wait in line to pick whatever goodies you want, order drinks or egg tarts, and pay. If you're getting egg tarts, you give them your phone number so they can identify you (they'll likely tell you it's a 10-20 minute wait depending on how busy it is). Then you hang out or do whatever. But the line of people waiting for their egg tarts has no order, and because of the language barrier I feel awkward budding in to try to ask. You write your whole number but they only use the last 4 to identify you. I think they would do better with a better system, like deli numbers or something. Would be more orderly. I always end up waiting longer than they tell me because of it. Which I think says something about how good their egg tarts are... AMBIANCE: They have a limited seating area inside the store of wood/metal benches and metal tables. Each table can seat 4, but it's really better to sit down while you wait or have one quick egg tart. It's loud inside so I wouldn't suggest staying to hang out. The Portuguese egg tart was okay. They are not something that I would go out of my way for as I have had much better. The milk tea was pretty mediocre, very little flavor, though 3$ was a fine price. They seem confused if you order egg tarts in multiples other than six, which is a bit annoying. Six came out to $10.5, which is convenient because the credit card minimum is $10. The egg tart fresh had a bit of a tough crust, and was not flaky at all, probably in order to hold more of the very soft custard. The custard was nice! Very much unsweet and very tender. Almost better after it cooled down more, but the crust got worse. I will give you one solid reason to visit Xin Fa next time you are visiting 8th Avenue: 糯米雞 (Lo Mai Gai) or sticky rice chicken if you translate it directly into English. It's been difficult to get Lo Mai Gai in NYC as many dim sum restaurants prefer to sell the smaller (and usually not nearly as good) versions of 珍珠雞 (Zhen Zu Gai). After heating Lo Mai Gai up at home, the fragrance from the lotus leaves wrapping the Lo Mai Gai permeated the air in my dining room. Once I sliced it open into quarters, I couldn't wipe the smile off my face as I found the Lo Mai Gai filled with a copious amount of fillings including: Chinese sausage (Lap Cheong), shiitake mushrooms, egg yolk, ground meat, gravy, etc. The fillings matched perfectly with the moist and fragrant stick rice. In case you need another reason to visit Xin Fa, the Portuguese egg tarts here have an amazing custard to crust ratio. Although there was a generous amount of creamy custard, that didn't collapse the crust when you bite into the tart. The crust was also unlike those found in other Chinese bakeries. It wasn't as flaky as ones made with butter but more chewy than ones made with lard. The crust almost had a mochi texture to it. At only $1.5 a piece, do yourself a favor and grab half a dozen. The only reason I took a star off from my rating? It was from the small individual cakes. They didn't taste as fresh as I had hoped. read more

We were recommended by friends that Xin Fa Bakery serves one of the best egg tarts in Brooklyn so we drove all our way from Queens to visit. The decor is clean, bright and renovated like new. During COVID-19, there was no self service and the staff would help with all the orders. We had their signature Egg tarts ($1.5 each with great portion) and Russian Bread with reasonable price. The egg tarts were decent but kind of overrated for us. The filling of egg tarts was creamy but too eggy, similar to steamed egg texture which wasn't our expectation.
