Egg tarts are the special here, snagged the last three until the next batch. The skin being a bit greasy so didn't separate through the layers (no flaking like other places), and the custard was more undercooked, almost a soft pudding. Newly renovated bakery on 8th ave! This bakery looks a little out of place because of how nice it is. We came here with the intention to try their well known Portuguese egg tarts, but we missed it and have to wait 20 mins which we didn't have time for. We will have to come back! We did manage to grab two delicious buns. We got the shredded pork bun with scallions and scallion bun. Both were really good especially when we heated it up with our toaster oven at home. Ok so maybe the authenticity is debatable but they're great for what they are(n't). They also sell other typical Chinese pastries and baked/steamed goods, but also Japanese castella cake! Wow, please sit down and eat your Portuguese egg tart as soon as you get it! It's worth burning your tongue and your inner cheek because the piping hot custard is definitely worth it. It's rounder and fatter than your typical Portugese egg custard (a fatter and better version of Lily Bloom's basically) and while I love the creamy and generous filling, it's not very hold-able and the crust isn't as flakey as my number one egg tart place (that would be New Flushing Bakery, please go and try theirs!). The crust breaks off super easily, and not because it flakes off. It BREAKS off. That said, I ate two in one sitting... And that said, I normally eat all 3 or 4 of New Flushing Bakery's in one sitting as well... You get the comparison now? Still, the size and pricing can't be beat and I'm sold on this hype! Five stars for their Macanese Dan Tat. This was the first chinese bakery dan tat (Dan tah, egg tart, portuguese egg tart) I've had since the start of the pandemic and it was heavenly. Their other pastries were excellently executed: baked char siu bao (cha sa bao for mandarin speakers, bbq pork bun), hot dog buns, egg cake. Their style is more on the lighter style of Fay Da and Sheng Kee and less gritty SF chinatown (where the pork char siu baos are meatier and juicier and denser). I called to pre-order the egg tarts so they were there waiting for me when I got there in a box next to the register. The cashier was like, why not make it 6 to get a full box? Good idea. When we lived in the neighborhood, 3 years ago , I would order their Chinese buns or egg tarts for ourselves, friends or coworkers. I remember we used to walk in and order half a dozen or a dozen Po tarts that day and return in an hour for pick up. Or my coworker will order 3 or 5 dozen for a company party. Apparently, they got so popular recently, you have to order 24 hours ahead of time. We tried to order the day of, two weeks ago and they said they don't do that anymore. Frustrated, we ordered two dozen this week to see if they're quality remain the same. Yes! The smell is intoxicating and The Taste is just as good as it was. Their quality of egg Tarts are hard to find anywhere else in the city. They may not taste a hundred percent like the Portuguese egg Tarts that you would get in Macau but their interpretation is a very good quality (Macau's egg custard is less fluid and more firm).
