You can get these perfect Portuguese egg tarts from any of the Lily Bloom Bakery or Xin Fa Bakery locations (sister stores). The crust is flaky and thick, while the custard is creamy and rich. The inside is silky smooth and irresistible, while the top is slightly burnt for a caramelized flavor. They're melt-in-your-mouth when you bite into it. I really wish we had a location in Queens. I always thought that if a bakery was part of a chain then it means all the food they sell is identical. I learned that this was not the case at least not with this bakery. I haven't been back to this location in years ever since the terrible incident years ago when they forgot my order and sold it to someone else. To this day, it perplexes me as to how you can forget an order I placed the night before. I went and go the coconut bread and the coconut bread in the tray. I noticed this location charged a quarter more for all their breads which was a shame. The most disappointing part was that the coconut bread they sell here were very dry compared to their other location. It's as if they were even related to each other. The displays look nice and clean but don't be fooled. Their breads are no good. The buns in the aluminum pan at least tasted like the other location. I think I'm done with this place. So sad. Edit: almost forgot to mention, their coconut breads are mostly hollow in the inside. Did they fill the breads with air I don't know. There is a clear distinction between cultures here so when leaving a review for an establishment that's outside of your usual norm you have to understand that what you expect and what they deliver might differ based on cultural norm. That being said knowing the culture of Lily Bloom, I want to state that aside from the language barrier. The food is fantastic.. We are speaking on a quick run and run out bakery level that has mediocre coffee but honey lemon iced tea out of this world, Portuguese, egg tart, and some other great bakery items to each their own not going to list everything. Highly recommend this place for a quick bite. I believe I know why some of you might have an issue with Lily Bloom. It is likely the same issue I had to deal with... a seemingly unfriendly way towards outsiders. My interaction started off nicely with a cordial lady who asked me, "What would you like, sister?" in Chinese. Now, I don't use my Chinese on a daily basis so I responded in English and then her whole demeanor changed. She almost took on a defensive posture. Thankfully my brother stepped in and spoke in Chinese. It turns out some businesses in the neighborhood are a lot more receptive to you if you speak Chinese. If you don't, you may as well be an outsider. Some of you might take issue with this and say, "But my money should be good here!" Well, you know what? I don't think some of these businesses care about outsiders and their money because they make enough money with their insiders. Having said that, once you get past (if you can get past) that little bit of decorum, you will enjoy the very best Portuguese egg tart you will ever have. I would drive back to Brooklyn (from Philly) and learn my one required sentence in Chinese just to eat another one of these egg tarts. The sponge cake is okay. The cheesecake is okay. The egg tart... it's just phenomenal. When it's warm, it's even better than phenomenal. You will DREAM about this egg tart because all others will pale by comparison after you eat it. read more

I've been to Xinfa bakery in sunset and had no idea this location is the same owner. LOVE their Portuguese egg tarts. Definitely wish this place was closer to where I live. I got a HK style milk tea that wasn't too sweet (perfect for me), a Portuguese egg tart (super creamy texture that somehow is able to hold it's form), and a sponge triangle shape cake for the next day (which was nice and fluffy). A good variety for everyone who walks in, except for the lady who wanted a croissant - sorry, no croissants here. I do wish they made protocols for indoor dining. The beauty of these bakeries for me is that they used to be an awesome space to get a quick bite or wait for a friend. Having said that, it'd probably wouldn't be up to standards since I can't imagine every grandma walking in would abide by it, which is why it doesn't exist currently. The food is great and there is a variety of options. They are best known for their Portuguese tarts sold at 1.50 each. The tarts are thick, not TOO sweet, and the crust is bready ~ pot pie texture- not flaky or like fruit tarts. I will say that you really have to be assertive here. When they ask who ordered x amount of tarts, you have to step up and say it's you even if others also ordered the same amount. I have witnessed this happening but also know that the egg tarts come in batches so even if someone takes that batch, more will come out right away. Those tarts are incredibly creamy with a thick, flaky tart. I could seriously eat a bunch of them in one sitting. There's also another branch in the 8th ave area. Aside from their tarts, they also have some interesting pastries like nougat cake by the front door. As for whole cakes, they only had about five options and all were on the smaller end. OMFG why are these potats so addicting? 95% of the time, I buy a half dozen intending to have breakfast for at least three days, but whaddaya know, it's gone by lunch time between three people at most. If you don't get a piping hot or even fresh warm batch, you need to pop these in the oven/toaster oven for 10-15 minutes and the crust is going to be unbelievably buttery and flaky. You come here for their famous egg tarts. Every Chinese bakery fanatic I've encountered comes here for their egg tarts only. The secret in their egg tarts that makes its texture so addictive is they add cream. Sinfully delicious and the only chain that offers egg tarts this way. Granted I don't take pictures of the tarts because I live literally 10 minutes away from this place. The amount of times I've eaten from here, I should be hitting the gym twice weekly. Sometimes you just have to show self control for things this good. Their other desserts are amazing as well - the lemon coconut flake buns, the Japanese loaf cheesecake, mango sagos and braised raisin buns. I also come here for their iced coffee milk tea (this I remember to take a picture of). Before the pandemic, they allowed customers to go to the sweets station and get a closer look at the goods. But now they closed it off and the servers can only roam there to service everyone. Tips for customers: Show up early when you can to get those egg tarts, they do run out. And if the day is still early and you don't see any egg tarts on display, just wait for the servers to bring out a fresh batch to restock. They're always cooking the egg tarts round the clock since this is their popular item to push. Be prepared to bring more cash than anticipated. I was absolutely impressed by their 7 inch Durian cake last week, so I went in today for their 7 inch green tea cake. They gave me a FROZEN CAKE! I was absolutely pissed. If I knew it was going to be frozen I wouldn't have bought it. The durian cake I bought last week was freshly made, but this green tea cake was the worse. I couldn't even cut this icy green tea cake with a metal knife (not to mention I did try using their plastic knife). I saw a post who pre-ordered in advance and they also gave a frozen green tea cake. So it got nothing to do with preordered or not. I visited yesterday to pickup 1 free egg tart per a promo plus to buy a bevy per my family's interest in a Chinese bakery evolving into new types of goods. Mixed results per below. The egg tart is actually a "po-tart" (Portugese tart) in which I've immense experience after 10y of buying either almost bi-weekly sustained and nearly weekly for the last 15mos, namely from Joe's Bakery and its sibling Good Family Bakery. I ordered 4 on my own dime (actually $1.50 each) and got the 1 free aforementioned. The issues here are namely that the pastry flaky crust was soggy, pale (not golden), and very thick as to have the inside custard-facing be even noticably soggier than the outside which are big no-no's in the world of po-tarts. Big plusses are that they're huge nearing 1/3lb, there was 1 which was flaky, and the custard is spot-on. Overall, middle-of-the-range rating here, more accurate is 3.75. In my scale, 4.0 is "quite good" so it could push that, too. I also got a roasted pumpkin bun whose outside was baked to perfection with the perfect surface, size, puffiness, and density. Generous portions of bread and filling both like with the po-tart. Small downside is the overly sweet filling, but that's my personal preference for less sugars, especially lately with stress eating, more than an absolute. I also got a taro pastry which was a generous taro filling, very generous just like all the others, and while bit sweeter than desired, it's very good, hits the spot and is quality made. Lastly, I also got 2 char-siu (roasted pork) buns which were generous as with all other items and perfectly presented, but a bit lacking in the near-white pale bread which was very dry and the filling too salty for personal preference. I think I'll return but for speciality modern goods while keeping my customary aforementioned 2 places for the weekly regular baked goods. Came here quickly for my egg tart which was absolutely delicious! I It was the perfect temperature, nice and warm! The pastry flakes were so crisp and yummy! I plan on going back before a family event to bring my family members egg tarts! It's cute inside and there are plenty of other pastries to purchase. Looked like they also had beverages too like bubble tea. I think the hours are a little off because I tried going at 7:15am but they weren't open yet. It's conveniently located right off the D train, if you're driving heads up - there's a lot of traffic in the area and parking is a little tough but there's metered parking. This place is the worst. Similar to the Xin Fa on 8ave, the line can go out the door. The Lily Bloom/Xin Fa bakeries are really popular and they have several locations but this specific location is horrible. I called two days ahead to order a 7-inch green tea crepe cake for pickup around afternoon. Upon arrival day of pickup, line was out the door. The bakery still have COVID safety set-up so they have a table separating the breads so there is an employee picking and bagging the bread for you and then putting them on the counter for you to pay after. Line was super slow because of this process and people attempt to be slick and skip the line. The store is small so the whole line and safety precautions made it even more difficult to navigate. Anyways, I made it to front of the line and I told them I'm there to pick up a pre-ordered cake. I paid but it took them a while to bring the cake out. Upon packing the cake, the lady told me that the cake was just taken out from the freezer and I should wait two hours for it to thaw before serving. That already raised red flags for me and did not sit right with me. Why is the cake frozen if I pre-ordered it in advance? What's the point in ordering a cake in advance if they weren't even going to bother making me a fresh cake? I might as well buy a frozen cake from the supermarket. They knew I was going to pick up a cake today and they didn't even bother to thaw the cake in advance. But whatever, I was already annoyed having already waited 30 mins in line for this cake. I asked if they can write "Happy Birthday" on the cake and I was told "no" but they would give me a birthday sign instead. Well, turns out it wasn't even a sign. It was just a card that I couldn't even stick on the cake and it literally says, "Happy Birthday," "Happy Anniversary," "Congrats," and all these other celebratory phrases.... I did not know this until later on. Skip to 4 hours later and we're cutting the cake... the cake was still frozen and impossible to cut with the plastic knife they provided. We end up leaving it for the next day... next day comes and the cake is now thawed but the cream between each layer is not creamy and all. Texture is all off and just taste like bad supermarket frozen cake. I had better crepe cake from the supermarket! The cake was $45 and not worth a dime of it. I'm not sure if it's just this location because I've ordered this cake from the 8ave location before and the quality and taste of the cake was much better. Also, the 7-inch cake looks significantly smaller than what I remembered from the last time I ordered it. Looks more like than 5/6-inch cake, but I'm not going to argue about measurements. The bakery is known for their Portuguese egg tarts. I didn't order it during this visit. I rarely ever leave such a low review for restaurants but I will not be coming back to this location. I really should've saw the red flag when I read someone else's review on the crepe cake. I remember the reviewer also saying the cake was frozen. read more

In the transit and downtown hub of Bensonhurst you'll find this chinese bakery. No frills and few seats with not too much of a variety of baked goods. Some pastries, buns, and milk bread but the go to item here that always leaves the shelf fast and constantly with customers buying them up is the delicious Portuguese egg tarts. They are made constantly throughout the day as the demand is high. They even keep them in their tin sheets before serving. You can buy one or sets of 3 at a time. The crust is very unique and baked crispy and buttery. The egg tart filling is flavorful eggy and sweet which holds up to being moved around and traveled with. They even have a nice caramelized bruleid top which adds a bit of nice caramelization flavor. I like their milk bread as well as it is soft and has a nice crust. I will definitely be back. read more
