The Lily Bloom bakery chain offers one of the best Chinese-style Portuguese Egg Tarts (pastél de nata; 葡撻) in New York City. Their tarts are $1.75 each, and are uniquely at least 50% larger, if not twice as large as the competition. We haven't found egg tarts this large anywhere else in New York, as Lily Bloom locations are all in Brooklyn. Lily Bloom's Portuguese egg tarts come piping hot when ordered by the box and fresh out of the oven, and are somewhat bland if eaten hot. But given several hours to cool and congeal into a proper custard, these egg tarts turn out to be pretty good. Worst bakery service. I ordered a fresh-made item and waited while about 10-15 customers came in after me. Even though my food was already prepared and only needed to be put into a bag with my other items (which would have taken about a minute), the staff continued serving everyone else in line. I even saw other completed fresh-made orders sitting on the counter. The staff kept taking new customers until the line was completely gone. When I asked why I had to wait while everyone who arrived after me was served first, I was told she was the only one working. That's not an excuse--it's poor management. I was finally able to see the buns display after years of them opening during the pandemic; before that, the buns were blocked off for showcasing. The shop is clean and the ladies that help you with the buns are kind and helpful. I tried to get different buns from other Chinese bakeries so I got one with sweet outer layer and salty egg yolk (it was fine, nice to try). Another bun I got was a really fresh looking sesame ball, which had lotus paste in the inside; really good, but very little filling. Another was a tapioca type texture bun, the texture is good, flavor is too subtle. Finally got a chance to try their rice noodles and it was a hefty container for $3 and $3.25. Got the dried shrimp rice noodles and beef rice noodles. The portion is huge. I decided to come in when I saw several people coming out with baked goods. It's a nice looking bakery with wonderful displays of colorful desserts. It is packed in there, but the staff is there to assist you. They have your typical Chinese goods from roast pork bun to curry chicken balls. Lily Bloom is a fairly successful local bakery chain that is most well known for their Portuguese egg tarts. I only stopped by because I noticed this was such a large storefront. However, when I stepped in I realized that there was no sit-down service, which is such a shame because this is massive space but you're only allowed to see and use a fraction of it. It's not your typical Asian bakery but filled with delicious flavors. Some of my favorites include HK milk tea, soy milk, rose tea, brown sugar drinks, etc. my typical go to are Portuguese egg tarts, Japanese cheesecake, pineapple bun with real pineapples, cake rolls, etc. i was delighted to find that they opened a three store front bakery at this new location and made it a point to try. I brought so much things here and they were either terrible or mediocre. The Portuguese egg tarts were okay. Even though it came out warm the shell was not crispy. The pork floss bun was ok at best and not enough floss. The coffee was ok. The Black Forest cake for $30 was horrible. The cake had a rough texture and the cream was heavy with a fake chocolate flavoring and the jam that was used as the filling was nasty. This review is just for their bread selection, we did not try any desserts. I'd have to say that I was pretty disappointed with them. The "corn dog" ($4) is kinda misleading because it had no hot dog in it, it's just mozzarella cheese inside and they put some mayo on top of it. We were told to eat it right away cus of the warm cheese, I ate it right when I got inside my car and I don't think it would've made a difference if I ate it at home or later on - there was no cheese pull. I wouldn't get that again. For $4 I can definitely get a bigger and better corn dog in the city. I stopped by one weekend afternoon thinking the place would have a lot of variety but was quickly disappointed. While there seems to be a wide storefront the majority of it seems to be storage. I came here to spend a "gift card" and had trouble figuring what to buy! I never have issues - bakeries are my jam where I'll buy everything. There were no tarts anywhere in sight, and some displays were blocked off with a table so it made it difficult to see what was available. The font is so damn tiny! The menu for drinks looked expansive on the screen behind the register but it was not well organized on quick glance. Tried this new location twice and honestly both times are disappointing. Bought the Portuguese egg tarts one time and the bottom of the tarts just seem not fully cooked at all. I even tried airfrying it in the hopes of fully cooking them (lol) yet it didn't work as the crust is too necessarily thick. The crust is also not flakey at all. I can safely say this was the worst egg tart I have ever tried, not sure how the quality has gone down so much as I have been buying egg tarts from them for quite a few years now. The second time bought a fried chicken bun instead and the bread is quite hard to chew which is something I never experienced before from any Chinese bakery.
