There are many bakeries in 8th Avenue but what stood out about this place was that they sell rice cakes. You can get two pieces for $2 or a box for $5.50 which had 9 pieces. Competition in the Chinese bakery market is stiff. The look and goods all seem similar, so how to distinguish between the bad, mediocre, and the good? I've been going to Chinese bakeries my whole life. While I haven't sampled everything at this establishment, I can say that Into-the-stratosphere-and-beyond-amazing are the mochi ball with green bean paste. The sticky rice is so fresh, soft, gooey, and smooth in consistency. To the extent that sticky rice can "melt," this nearly does it. The green bean paste in the middle is perfectly sweet and rich, without being overwhelming. The white mochi with crushed peanuts is good--same spectacular sticky rice--but with a hint of salty and sweet with the nuts. The other flavor offering is mango, which I have yet to try. These soft yet hefty babies are $1.25 each. The coconut pastry and red bean-swirled bun are also good, though less distinguished as the mochi balls. The date cake (nian gao) typically eaten during Chinese New Year was also solid. Prices are similar to other bakeries, but quality really stands out. There is another Dragon Bay bakery about two streets down around 56th Street on 7th Ave. Avoid this one. Similar prices and offerings, but not as fresh. My husband and I decided to explore the neighborhood after visiting a friend at Maimonides Hospital last Saturday. We walked several blocks and we wanted to try some of the local / authentic foods. After passing a few bakeries we finally decided to enter Dragon Bay Bakery. Their metallic park-bench like seating was filled with happy patrons when we took our seats. We tried a pork bun, a sweet bun with a pineapple like filling, a papaya drink and a coffee. All four were delicious and very fresh. The coffee was made very well without me making any specifications at all. The papaya drink was refreshing, though it took some time to get use to the gummy bear like berries at the bottom. Both buns were great! It was also cool sitting along side of strangers enjoying their foods, too. I like the family style seating. This is the first Chinese Bakery experience I have ever had and it was lovely. I would love to come back here and try more stuff. Wonderful bakery! I got a red bean pineapple bread to try first, and then I came back after we finished food hopping to get some bread for the next few days. I went back for another red bean pineapple bread, a normal pineapple bread, and a coconut cream bread; each item was $1 except for the pineapple bread, which was $0.90 (prices all including tax). The first time we went, there was a box of matcha cake for $3.75, but I didn't get it then and they were all gone when I got back! The bread is really chewy and fresh, and the pineapple top was crunchy and delicious. The bread was still good the next day, even though the crunch went away and became soft. Stopped here for a snack and drink on a hot summer afternoon. Very glad that I did! I got a Vietnamese cold tea that was sweet, smooth, and very refreshing in the heat. Typical 8th Ave bakery. They have all the standard fare (my favorite is the pork chop sandwich). But what I like them the most for is their red bean ice drink. Ever since my last visit here 4 years ago, the service and food quality has vastly improved. Back then, I didn't have a smartphone, so I forgot to review it, but the food was just mediocre and expensive (as an Asian bakery). Now, it's still slightly expensive, but not as bad, as prices rose all across the neighborhood. I'm guessing once they finally settled down from expanding, they focused on honing food quality. Like the rest of its chain bakeries on 8th ave, this branch offers a ton of drinks (some premade and others made for you upon order), but what makes this branch awesome is the freshness of its bread. The local seniors and kids (from schools) come here all the time, ensuring fresh and warm bread. I personally recommend the Macau egg tart, because it not only looks amazing, but the custard is still creamy and warm with a perfect consistency (recommended to be eaten on the be spot while it's warm). It isn't too overpowering nor lacking flavor. My second recommendation would be the cookie hot dog. It sounds weird, but the bread is really fresh, crispy, and perfectly buttery. This sounds bad on paper, but tastes amazing in person. My only complaint on the hot dog is that it's lacking flavor, but I'm just used to eating Nathan's hot dogs. But stay away from the fish fillets buns. They (the fillets) are overfried and really dry. It's not bad but just not worth the money. Dragon Bay is your run of the mill Chinese bakery set within the 8th Ave Brooklyn Chinatown community. They have a solid supply of baked goods, mostly fresh, at least the staple stuff like buns, and egg tarts. Beyond that I can't speak for anything else. This is perhaps one of the few places I would stop in as the other bakeries in the area don't appear and or have turned out to be not as fresh than at Dragon Bay. I will keep coming back here and here only if I'm in the area. I suggest you do the same. I go here a lot; and when I say a lot, I mean it. After school, I'm usually raving hungry. As a result, I usually want something dirt cheap and filling. Dragon Bay offers goods that satisfy both requirements! Keep note that if you go during the morning, the buns are guaranteed to be fresh. However, they have batches upon batches of buns shooting out of their kitchens all the time. Even after school, I can still feel the warmth of the buns in their wax paper confines. A list of my favourite selections: - Sesame pancake: They serve these at the other Dragon Bay's too, but these are much bigger than the other chains. They look a bit like shao bing that's encrusted in sesame seeds, but they're sweet ! Inside, there's a thick, thick, glutinous filling. It's filling ! - Char xiu bao: This is a must for me. This is the only Dragon Bay in 8th ave that does char xiu bao decently. The other Dragon Bay's char xiu is cut in too large pieces and there is a lack of 'sauce' that makes it taste really bad. One complaint, however, is that the bun-to-meat ratio is off (more bun, unfortunately). Still tasty, but I've had better. - Red bean pancake: These pack a punch ! They look awfully small, but they filled me up. They're fried slightly (probably on a pan) and there's this wonderful contrast of chewy and crunchy. Wonderful. But wait! There's more! (and it doesn't even cost 4 payments of 9.99) The red bean paste starts to ooze out when you progress further. Not too sweet, but there's a pleasant flavor change. - Taro bun: It's the one with the peanut (?) powder on top of it. The taro bun tasted really good. If you like taro, try this ! They used 100 percent taro; the color wasn't a strange deep purple, and the flavor wasn't too 'taro-y' or fake. It was mild, like taro usually is, and it tasted wonderful with the soft and pillow-y bun. - Cheese and ham bun: Get this! But only when it's fresh from the oven. The cheese is still ooey and gooey. After it cools down, the cheese is just a impenetrable glob of plastic-y blandness. TIPS: - Skip the drinks (they're a rip off) and go to Ten Ren's or even Quickly if you must. Milk tea is standard, not enough tea flavor though ! - Skip the pretty looking tarts and cakes out in the front. They're usually dry and kind of stale. - Don't even try to eat at the bakery; it's ridiculously crowded, and the metal chairs hurt my butt. Food: 8.5/10 Service: 10/10 (The lady that helps you get your buns is faster than you! she always asks me what I want before I'm ready for my selection. She's always patient, however, even when I take 3+ minutes trying to decide among the large variety of buns) Value: 10/10 (While buns aren't 70 cents each like some smaller, less known bakeries, they deliver on taste-- and that makes it so much worth it) If you're hungry, or if you just have the munchies, come here ! Your typical Chinese bakery. Just a tip: Make sure you calculate how much your buns are before you purchase. I went to buy some buns before work in the morning. Raisin Twist ($1), Danish Twist ($1), Ham and Egg Bun ($1.25). Total should be $3.25. The female cashier with short hair and glasses tells me $3.25 in Chinese, but rang up $3.75 on the screen. If you did not understand what she was saying, you could of easily just paid $3.75 and left. I felt that was a little shady. But as always, wherever you go, it's your job as a consumer to make sure what they ring up is correct, since errors or mistakes are bound to flare up once in awhile, whether it is intentional or unintentional. read more

Dragon Bay bakeries (they have more than one location) have the best selection that we could find in Brooklyn's Chinatown. Their sesame balls with red bean filling are huge. We really enjoyed the green tea and coconut rice balls with taro and peanut fillings inside. The outside was quite soft and the texture feels great in your mouth as you chew on it slowly. The filling was quite sweet. Their staff was very friendly and steered us towards ones who were fluent in English to help us with the selection.
