Double Crispy has stepped up their game with so much competition from other bakeries in Chinatown. It is really convenient for me because it's halfway between my sister's place and the Grand St subway station and I can pick up cakes, pastries, snacks and drinks to bring to my favorite nieces and nephews. My other sister likes grabbing coffee and milk tea from here; iced in the summer and hot in the winter. I like that most of my favorite buns are self-service on the display tables and I will usually grab some char siu, hot dog and ham & egg baos to snack on or have for breakfast over the whole week. If you like egg tarts, there is usually a whole tray of them that you have to ask for them to wrap up for you. They come in the standard baked style and the sugar torched (bruléed) Portuguese style. Fresh is best but if you have to microwave your bao, eat them quick or they turn into rubber. The Pikachu Pokemon display cake looks really cute and I just might order that for my grand niece's birthday in a few months! read more

Small Chinese bakery but they got all your classics like egg tart, red bean bread, pineapple bun and my fav coconut cream bread. Since it's a small business, I'm guessing it's cash only (I paid with cash). Or there might be a minimum to use credit card. My coconut cream bread cost $2.25. That bread, man. So freakin good! My friend went to NYC and picked up a pineapple bun for me to enjoy from Double Crispy Bakery. I heated it up in my air-fryer, and it was the perfect color and temperature to enjoy. While it had a crispy layer with a nice chew on the inside, I didn't really like anything else about it. It was bland and lacked the milky or buttery flavor I was hoping for. Overall, just really plain. I personally wouldn't recommend the pineapple bun at Double Crispy. read more

Stopped by here for a quick snack while walking in Chinatown and it wasn't bad. They have a variety of Chinese pastries, from sweet to savory. I ended up getting their Portuguese egg tart. While I found that it was a bit pricier than my go-to ones (from other shops in Chinatown), it wasn't bad. I think in the end though, it didn't stand out and there are other spots nearby for same quality and better price. Their specialties are their dan tat (egg custard tart) and lo paw beng (wife cake). Haven't been to this bakery for a long time. With all the great Chinese bakeries in Chinatown, this one never really comes to mind. However, my friend said that it's her favorite spot for egg tarts, so I had to come back and try again to confirm. Generally, I prefer a puff pastry crust for my Egg Tarts rather than the pie crust-like version here. That was the first negative on their Egg Tart for me. Also, the filling was not creamy at all and more flan-like. Sadly I do not agree with my friend. On the other hand, I really like their Peanut Mochi, which was extremely soft and gooey. I do wish it had more peanut filling with a little less sugar, but it is certainly better than most. read more

Love the Portuguese style egg tarts here. They rival the ones at Xinfa to be honest. The crust is flakier, like a typical HK style egg tarts, and they are super generous with the filling. Texture is perfect, custardy, and slightly sweeter than the typical HK egg tart. Get the normal egg tarts if you like pastries not sweet. They are always warm when I get them which is awesome. This is my go-to spot for egg tarts in Manhattan's Chinatown (and they serve literally anthing else you'd like for Asian bakery: savory, sweet pastries, cakes, Hong Kong style coffee and tea, steamed baos, dry snacks, and moon cakes!) The staff here, while efficient at the counter, is really nice and friendly. Months after I saw (and loved) the NYT mini documentary about their mooncakes, I finally made it in. Red bean mooncake and pineapple mooncake were both great. The pineapple wins for chewy texture, but it had a slightly artificial pineapple taste. So the red bean wins for flavor. Also nice that they stock them outside of the holiday! All tasted great and loved the cute containers that they came in too! These pretty pastries are now 2.25 a piece. The taste is "bright" with a lemon zest or could be how brightly yellow they are. The pastry itself is crispy, as long as you get it hot. I personally get 2-3 to eat in the span of 1-2 days (1 for the moment, the others for the next day or two) and it holds up well enough. read more

Love their po tats (Portuguese egg tarts) Absolutely my fam and my favorite from here. Po tat prices have been increasing over the years (now $2.25 for one). It used to be under $2! My parents have tried the pastries from here and like it. I personally haven't had them but I will 100% always come back for the egg tarts. On the quest to find the best egg/po tats in the city, my next stop was Double Crispy Bakery. They stand out in that even though I went close to closing, they somehow were able to keep their po tats warm, and the crust crumbly and fresh. I enjoyed the crumbly texture of the crust, and the po tat wasn't super jammy on the inside like I was hoping it would be, but did have a nice char. As far as the custard texture goes they're definitely in the middle in terms of super eggy jammy to cooked eggy solid. It was subtly sweet, and the crust had a nice savoriness to it. Beware, they only take cash. Solid spot, and doing great by keeping the egg tarts warm. I will go back to return their dan tat. Don't sleep on their other items too! They have standard chinese bakery fare worth checking out. read more

Came here to buy a birthday cake for my girlfriend's birthday. I bought a two pound cake, which ended up being HUGE. We had 11 people in our party that ate the cake, and there was still almost half of the cake left over. In all honesty, we probably only needed 1 pound (the lady at the counter said we needed 2), but it made for good leftovers. The cake itself was tasty; not too sweet but still had great flavor and was filled with fruit in the layers. Place is known for their egg tarts, so will definitely come back in the future to try some. Good to know that this is a cash only spot (there are ATMs and bank branches around the area). Char Siew Bao (Roast Pork Bun) was pretty darn good. I was looking for an alternative since my go-to spot was closed that day. It was like $2? a bit pricey than the average, but definitely worth the price. [I did find a piece of bone in the cha siew filling so deducting a star]. It will prob be an alternative spot for me. I came here for their egg tarts and Double Crispy Bakery did not disappoint. At $2 for one egg tart, it's a little steep and pricier than some of the other places (~$1.50 at other places for similar size and taste). As the name of the bakery suggests, the crust was flaky and heftier than the other bakeries that I tried. The sturdy crust makes it good for transporting. I've been to this small Chinese bakery a handful of times primarily for their outstanding cheap egg tarts; both HK and Macau style (though the latter is better.) The Macau version/Po Tat is 25¢ more and it's worth it. Nicely fluffy with a stronger egg flavor. Also not overly sweet compared to other spots. This might be low-key the best version I've eve had though I'm almost happy (in a selfish way) that they don't have the lines from the other famous egg tart spots. The Hong Kong style/Dan Tat is a close second but it's still solid. I've gone there just before closing and earlier and it always tastes fresh and delicious with a good egg flavor and a similarly flaky crispy crust. No complaints either with the only better one I know being in Flushing. I've tried other pastries here which are just alright but go here for the specialty. Great selection, always has people whenever I stop in, and cash only (like many places in Chinatown!) Come early if you want the egg tarts to be fresh and warm! The regular egg tarts are $1.50 and often sold out by the afternoon. They always have the Portuguese ones available. The egg tarts truly live up to the bakery name - crispy, light and fluffy! You can see each layer of the crust I also tried their pineapple bun but did not think it was great, but definitely the 5 stars is for their egg tart! A small shop very well lit and clean. At busy times you would see a small line of people waiting for the Portuguese egg tart here. I tried it and it was excellent. They keep it in a warming display case so you always have warm and crispy egg tart. $2.25 a piece which is not too expensive. read more

The beloved Portuguese egg tart. Totally fascinated by the caramelized top. The pastry is shatteringly crisp. The filling is irresistibly creamy. The classic Hong Kong egg tart. Mildly sweet, with just the right amount of sugar to satisfy your sweet tooth. The center is eggy, custardy, and not overly rich. The sponge cake. Soft, moist, and generously sized. This is review for the Honeycomb cake Malaysian style. Dark brown malted goodness, the flavor reminds me of malted dark brown sugar/toffee/caramel, has nice chewy texture like puto. Th is no honey in it! It takes its name from the interesting honeycomb interior. Love that it's not too sweet. It is not a common item available in Chinese bakeries in this area. I've worked in restaurants and bars long enough to understand that staff drinking happens, but this was on another level entirely. I came in with a group of friends and one of the bartenders, Will, was so visibly drunk that it made the entire experience uncomfortable. Slurred speech, wobbling behind the bar, taking orders while chewing food with his mouth open -- it was honestly embarrassing to watch. He looked like he absolutely did not want to be there. At one point, my group had been trying to get his attention for another round for quite a while while he stood around talking with coworkers. We then watched staff take a shot together, and when he finally came over he burped mid-conversation and literally had whatever he had just been drinking dribbling down his neckbeard. That was the moment where the whole thing went from unprofessional to just gross. What made it worse was that it didn't seem isolated to one employee. Throughout the night we watched staff openly taking shots and drinking behind the bar like it was a house party instead of a business. There's a difference between bar culture and complete lack of professionalism, and this crossed that line hard. One of the friends I was with actually frequents the DUMBO location and said that the last time she was there, the same bartender also seemed intoxicated, which makes this feel less like a bad night and more like an ongoing issue. The DUMBO location itself is in an amazing spot, which makes it even more disappointing. But ownership seriously needs to get control of what's going on there before someone gets hurt or the place develops a reputation for having drunk staff on the clock. Unfortunately, the experience was uncomfortable enough that my girlfriends and I won't be coming back. I genuinely hope the employee mentioned gets help if this is a regular thing, because nobody should be working service in that condition.
