I accidentally came into this bakery when I was looking for another one, oops. Since I was already here, I decided to grab some baked goods. I picked up a Chinese Tamale or Zongzi ($4) and Fried Dumpling or Ham Sui Gak ($1.25). The tamales was tasty although lacked much ingredients inside. Since Hop Shing closed after Covid, I've been on a hunt for replacement baked pork buns in NY Chinatown for years. Hop Shing had me spoiled for decades and it was worth driving 3 hours RT and paying $$ for gas and tolls. All good things come to an end, sadly. Anyway, I was happy to finally find that M & W's baked pork buns met the challenge albeit not 100% like HS, but good enough to keep me as a regular customer. Today I decided to try their steamed pork buns and asked if it was the same filling as their baked ones and the answer was yes so I bought a dozen. Well, the adverse is true - the steamed pork buns have a very strong coconut flavor throughout - so much that it totally overpowers the roast pork filling. Very disappointing!! I was on my way to dinner when I stumbled upon this gem of a bakery. They were closing so I got a bunch of buns on "clearance". The pineapple coconut buns were delicious with a nice top and ample filling that wasn't too sweet. My husband lived the roast pork buns and claims it had more filling than some others he's had. Flavorful and not too fatty. I bought 3, but didn't get a chance to try because he ate them all! But my favorite purchase was the wife cakes. This is one of two items I look forward to getting from Chinese bakeries, and they did not disappoint. It was one of the best wife cakes I've ever had. They are slightly smaller in circumference but they are made thicker at this bakery. Why? Because of the THICK MOCHI layer!! It was so thick and chewy with a very slight crunch from the winter melon. For me, it was the perfect ratio and of course it was "not too sweet." Yum I got some pork song buns also but my kids ate those. I will definitely be returning and getting some more pastries for myself! My star rating legend: 5: A+ Worth a special journey (ie. After Lung Moon bakery on Mulberry Street closed down was so bummed out. Where to go for tasty treats and sweets close by. One of my cousins recommended M & W Bakery. So I have been purchasing cooked steamed buns that are found in their freezer/fridge. Also read reviews from Yelper's about their egg tarts, so this time around got two packs of the steamed roast pork buns as wells as three egg tarts and other buns too. Heck those egg tarts must be really good. One family member gobbled up two of them once they got home. He was eyeing the third one. Remember sharing is caring. LOL. Stopped by here on the way to another bakery looking for mooncakes. Pleasantly surprised by the pricing of the mooncakes especially compared to the ones that are sold in the tin cans in grocery store. However, upon buying the mooncakes, I noticed that it was hard which is fine because you have to set out mooncakes for 2 days in room temperature to soften, after baking. I took it home and left it out for 2 days in a container and it still did not soften up! The mooncakes was really dry and crumbly and the red bean filling was not fragrant. The egg yolk was also really dry. After discovering this, I left it out for few more days to see if it would soften up even more but it did not. The mooncakes here were a big disappointment. I did not try their other baked food so I will have to come back and try it. read more

Very solid roast pork bun ($1.35). Good flavor, faintly sweet, and not super artificially red. I froze them for a few days and then microwaved for around 45s (shifted plate halfway through for more even heating). It puffs up a lot, which is fun to watch! Only thing is I got one bun with not much filling. :( It still had a nice texture and still hit the spot. I'll be returning for more buns, and I also want to try their other items! read more

Good option for quick great food/pastries. Line was short compared to other spots which was nice. The buns we got were quite cold - I guess they'd been refrigerated for a while - but I do wish they were warm. The interior is small with just a stool or two. We use to go shopping in Chinatown during the weekend and I always make sure to find some time to stop here. It's an inexpensive sugary treat that delights the senses. My dad use to take me here to buy the coconut mochi balls and raisin bread. Now it's my turn to buy my son, niece and nephews treats from here and we love the steam buns with chinese sausage, raisin bread, pineapple buns. One of the hidden bakeries in Chinatown - unassuming storefront, but a gem. The best paper cup sponge cakes I have had - very fluffy and light, beautiful rich taste but not too heavy - even great the next day. Best of all is the pricing - Monday afternoon around 13:30, 3 for $2.50 or else 1 for $1. Some of the other larger chain bakeries around were $2+ for 1. I am a big fan of lotus seed paste buns and they boxes to go of smaller or larger ones with plenty of filling - just make sure to re-steam for the best results. Don't pass this over, one of the best and great pricing too! And it doesn't seem to be a chain. What more could you ask for? read more

Another new bakery shop appears in the heart of Chinatown on Bayard St. Looks like a new extension of M & W Bakery from E. Broadway. I decided to check it out and tried the following: 1) 2 Egg Tarts for $1.00 - The crust was soft and flaky, and the egg custard cream was creamy and not overly sweet. Pretty good egg tarts. 2) 1 bag of 8 Taro buns for $4.00 - This is new to me and not usually seen on any other bakery shops. The bun texture was soft and the taro paste was smooth, lightly sweetened and moist. You could taste the real taro ingredient. I like this bun a lot and is a must try for taro lover. It may seem the shop has limited choices due to small space but what they offer are good quality. I will be back for more. read more

I love checking out chinatown bakeries, and M&W did not disappoint. Their egg tarts go on sale in the afternoon (I think it was around 3/4pm when I went), and it was 3 for $2--what a steal! The egg tarts are perfect when reheated in the toaster oven at home. The ratio between the crust to filling is perfect and I loved that it wasn't overly sweet as well. This is my favorite bakery in Chinatown - it has been around for decades, is family owned and operated, and offers delicious buns at very fair prices. Store clerks speak both Chinese and English. I sincerely hope you guys do your best to support this business -- too many great restaurants and food shops have closed in NYC due to the pandemic and we can't let another neighborhood gem go under. Still need a lot of things to improve. Staffs were friendly, there were only two ladies but there were a lot of customers so I think they would need more workers. It's a very narrow bakery, I think they should take out the 3 chairs that is there for the customers. It's so small that you wouldn't want to be crowded with people coming in and out of the store. There were not much space to stand and wait to be next. There is a little step that my friend kind of tripped on as she walked out of the store. I think they should fix this before someone really falls. We got a lemon tea and a milk tea. both small and hot. We came to realized there were no sugar in our milk tea.... the hot milk tea uses the teley tea bags so this is a plus for me. I dislike lipton teabags. I also got an egg slice cake. it's standard. I would buy it again. Location, I think it's a GREAT idea to have a bakery here because there isn't one on this block. They have great coffee and fresh baked pastries and buns. The ladies are very nice and I make it a point to stop in and buy something as often as I can. My favorite co-worker likes hot dog buns, I stop in every couple of days to pick one up for my co-worker along with other items for my family in Brooklyn. Just like another branch on East Broadway, this bakery is a tiny long strip with limited seating. Yet a much better resemblance is that they offer two for one on bakeries such as egg tarts, triangular cakes, and sandwiches over the weekends. You probably think, there must be a catch. Well yeah, a small catch is that the egg tarts are not deep hence there's not much filling. Nevertheless they are decent. The cakes are of decent sizes and tastes are standard.
