And what I love about this place is that it is literally authentic Chinese bakery in the front and PARTY in the back. Let me explain. In the front, you have your traditional Chinese bakery with all the goodies. Pork buns. Sweet buns. Coconut bread. Rice balls. Sesame balls. All of that. And everything is made fresh. When I go in there, baby, I be grabbing EVERYTHING. Their yam bun? CHEF'S KISS. The coconut sweet bread is everything--and y'all know I love me some coconut. The pork bun is really good. Grab you a coffee and one of those fresh buns and go live your life. And one of the things I really appreciate is that when something is gone... IT'S GONE. That's it. They're not pulling another one from somewhere in the back that's been sitting around. They make everything fresh, and once they sell out, they sell out. I LOVE THAT. Because you know you're getting something fresh. You know you're getting something traditional. You know it's being done right. Like I keep saying in these reviews, we want authenticity, okay?! I want the recipes and the traditional hands that have been doing this for YEARS. The kind of hands that could probably make these buns with their eyes closed. That's what I want. HEADS UP: The bakery in the front is cash only, so come prepared! But then... You go to the back. And that's where the party starts. In the back is Ohayo Boba, and I LOVE their drinks. Bubble teas, smoothies, green teas, traditional milk teas--they have so many different flavors and combinations. I've definitely had my brown sugar milk tea, and the last drink I got was some kind of mango-passion fruit situation with lychee boba, and baby... Delicious. I don't even need to remember exactly what I ordered. I remember it was GOOD. And unlike the bakery, you can use your card in the back. They also have a cute little seating area, so you can grab your goodies from the bakery, get yourself a boba, sit down for a minute, and enjoy. So if you're around Grand Street and want a cute little something--whether you want a fresh bun, something sweet, coffee, boba, whatever--pop into Ohayo Bakery. Just remember: Cash in the front. Of course we had to do a quality control check and tried our usual onigiri / omusubi + some egg custard tarts / dan tat. All was in order -- and in fact, the egg custard tarts were still warm when we brought them home. The pastry crust was awesomely flakey, the filling reasonably rich with yolk and not too sweet. There are better egg custard tarts in Manhattan's Chinatown, but Bakery Onigiri / Ohayo bakery's versions aren't bad at all, especially considering that incessant Trumpflation still hasn't impacted pricing.
