Tried Taiwan Bear House for the first time, and ordered for delivery. I chose the fried chicken leg bento box, which comes with a braised egg, sauteed cabbage, and braised minced pork sauce (which they warn you comes with peanuts) over rice. The chicken came cut up into four pieces. It had such a good aroma, and was crispy, juicy, and well-seasoned. The sauteed cabbage was tasty and cooked just right (not overly soft). The braised egg was a little dry, but tasty nonetheless. The minced pork sauce was yummy over the rice. I finished up this delicious meal with the sweet mung bean soup which comes with mung beans and barley. It is a cold soup, which was refreshing and not too sweet. I look forward to trying the other items on the menu.
Very sad portion of popcorn chicken for the price. Wasnt even flavorful. Not study friendly as they don't have bathroom or wifi
Whenever I'm in Chinatown I like to stop by this no frills spot to grab a bento box! I love that it comes with an entree and a small side of the minced pork rice. The cabbage is super tasty too.
I have been coming to this restaurant for years! There aren't many places to get Taiwanese food in Chinatown and this is usually my go-to. The prices are fair and the portions are decent. I always get the minced pork bento box which comes with a marinated egg and cabbage for $11.xx after tax. It is filling and good!
Was here for a quick lunch and got a Braised Pork Belly Bento Lunch ($15 that's with tax included). I would often pass by this place, but this is my first time eating here. It was empty when I ate here, but that's to be expected on a weekday where people work 9-5 and come for a lunch break. Seats maybe up to 10 people, so it's not a big place but just good enough. The food has good taste and the pork belly is juicy. May consider coming back here again as it is close to my workplace.
Stopped in for lunch to try the popcorn chicken and fried chicken leg bento boxes along with a side of braised tofu. The popcorn chicken are actually medium sized chunks and the fried chicken leg is a good portion (drumstick and thigh)...both are nicely fried and not overly seasoned. Definitely a great spot for a quick, yet delicious meal. There's only room for about 12 people, so you might not be able to dine there during the high times. Bottom line, the food was tasty and the service was relatively fast.
Small shop with about four tables with 1 on 1 seating lined across. You walk in and order on a kiosk machine. We had a few questions and the server at the counter was super nice and friendly. He was very patient and helped us figure out what we wanted. My friend ordered the popcorn chicken which was some of the most flavorful fried chicken I have tasted. Whatever spices they used after frying the chicken were top tier and I certainly want to know what it is. I ordered the scallion chicken and I personally loved it. It certainly is not tailored to everyone's flavor profile. The scallion tasted similar to a pickled cabbage and can be on the sour end. So I would stay away if that is not your cup of tea. It was filling for one person I would say, but I had plenty of room for dessert. For the bigger bellies I can see you still being hungry after ordering one bento box. They took about 15 mins to come out (so it's not as quite grab and go as dollar dumplings etc etc) but still decently fast. There are plastic utensils at the front counter that are self serve with napkins. Overall will come again for a nice quick and cheap meal. I really enjoyed my food and look forward to trying the other bento boxes when I get the chance.

I've stumbled upon Taiwan Bear House and it's a cute little shop located in Chinatown with a few tables inside. I order the popcorn chicken because it's the perfect spot to grab something and hang out with a friend. The popcorn chicken pieces are bigger than most places however, they're crispy on the outside and juicy in the inside. They have a very unique taste to them and are extremely tasty.
The railroad bento box is my to go dish. Really cannot find it anywhere else. Service is great. Limited seats inside.

I ordered the railroad pork chop bento (懷舊鐵路便當). While I was waiting for the food, I noticed the big box of cardboard boxes in the corner, which - if my experience eating Taiwanese cuisine means anything - was definitely a green flag. It's overall a clean interior with not many seats; I'm not sure how busy it gets, but maybe most people order takeaway. My food came out in a classic round box - uncovered since I wanted to dine-in. It smelled SO good - a mix of the quintessential Taiwanese flavours of pork chop, minced pork sauce over rice, and the stir-fried 高麗 Taiwanese cabbage. The pork chop was really yummy, although it was less crispy than I expected. The meat was juicy and tender but a bit lacking small relative to the amount of rice/veggies. I love Taiwanese cabbage so much, and it's actually surprisingly difficult to find in restaurants in NYC, even Taiwanese places (well, at least well-/traditionally-cooked Taiwanese cabbage). There was so much cabbage and it was SO delicious - I wolfed down each and every leaf. Tasted just like it was from the corner 自助餐 places I'd go to in Taiwan. Rice came in a good portion size, and overall I think this was the perfect size for one person to eat. Although, I will just quote the NYT here as an aside: "At Taiwan Bear House, each bento costs less than $10 and is fuel for a day. (In Taiwan, it would be less than $3.)" Well, it came out to around $14 today, and last I checked, it was slightly over $3 in Taipei now. Jokes aside, though, I'm well aware that NYC is NYC and the costs are just different; and for bento like this in America, I'm happy to pay this "premium" lol. I'd love to come by to try some of the other bentos and sides; if the pork chop rice was this good, I'm sure everything must be super yummy, too! A few more visits and it might have become my favourite TW place in NYC :)

I got lunch here last week. It was surprisingly empty during a busy holiday weekend. Tucked away in the middle of China town, this establishment offers Taiwanese cuisine presented in a simple manner. I got the fried chicken lunch box served with rice and veggies. I also got the beef luwei. Everything was overall great! There are a few seats and tables inside for you to enjoy your meal. read more

Solid place for popcorn chicken, so far my favorite in the city. There's only 10 pieces but they are quite big. Seasoned heavily. Some pieces have more than others and therefore are saltier. Perfectly crispy. I liked that they poked holes on the lid for to-go orders to attempt to keep the chicken crispy. Juicy chicken. Just wanted basil to be fried with the chicken. read more

Been craving lu rou fan for the longest time, and Taiwan Bear House hit the spot. They absolutely nailed my childhood comfort food! Everything about it was delicious--the cabbage, the sauce, the pork, the egg :) I also got a jasmine milk tea which was not as fancy as actual boba places, but it gets the job done. I've come back again and again for their lu rou fan and will continue to!! read more

This was a nice choice. Ordered 2 takeout rices: Night Market Crispy Chicken Bento Box: Popcorn chicken was juicy and crispy. So delicious. I wish the egg was less dry on the inside but this was super filling and good. Braised Pork Belly Bento Box: This was okay. I wish it was a bit more tender/moist. Maybe I am unfamiliar with how Taiwanese style pork belly is like. But prob would stick to the first one! I got a jasmine tea with lychee jelly. So much lychee jellies. Great satisfying meal. read more
We were going to eat dimsum in Chinatown but everywhere had a longgg wait, and I remembered this place was on my list too! It was recommended by a friend who is Taiwanese and said the railroad bento box was legit. I had to trust a local. Without doubt we ordered two Railroad Porkchop bento box and it was SO FREAKING GOOD. I was worried it might not have enough sauce but theres some ground pork with sauce over the rice. It's got protein, and veggies. Might skip the sausage next time, it was good but pricey. We'll definitely be back. Btw there wasn't any wait on a holiday lunch time, and i don't think theres bathroom inside the restaurant. Small seating area. read more

As of Jan 2024, the place has a sanitary grade of B. Not a lot of in-person customers around weekday lunch time. Not all the staff are fluent in English to take your order. I can get something similar for cheaper at another restaurant. Quality of the food was mediocre. I do not plan on returning. read more

My go-to spot for classic Taiwanese rice boxes! Always so homey, reliable and delicious. Been here several times now and they've never let me down. Plus the meal comes in such cute circular bamboo boxes. The prices have inevitably risen over the years but still very much worth it. For around $13 you can get a pretty filling meal - 3 proteins (including a tea egg + minced pork + meat of your choice) and cabbage over rice. Can't get any better than that. Fried chicken leg, night market crispy chicken, and pork belly are my faves! read more

The order came out right away. It does unfortunately have limited seating so it would be a good place to grab a quick takeout instead of dining in. There is also online ordering for pickup which is convenient. I got the Night Market Crispy Chicken Bento Box. The fried chicken was extremely crispy and juicy. It includes a good portion of rice topped with braised minced pork, giving the dish more flavor. It also has a side of cabbage and a soy sauce egg. I feel like this bento is filling enough for one person. read more

I decided I would get a convenient dinner for myself. Taiwan Bear House fit the bill for me. They are doing strictly takeout during Covid 19. I ordered the Taiwan Sausage Bento Box. It came with seasoned cabbage, marinated minced pork and a hard boiled tea egg, shelled. The pork infused the rice underneath with a nice meaty flavor. It was just what I needed. This came as an appropriately sized individual portion. It was a short wait as it was prepared to order. I noted the container it is served in, appears to be made of bamboo. Hidden gem! The Popcorn Chicken is well seasoned, tender and crispy. You have two options to get your hands on this dish, whether you get it as part of the bento box over rice or standalone without rice. One key attribute about Taiwanese Popcorn Chicken is that the seasoning is always done well. The Original Minced Pork Bento Box is tasty over rice with a tea flavored boiled egg. This is a key here is to incorporate the sauce, the minced pork and tea egg well with the rice. When integrated well, one spoonful provides all the elements of the dish in one bite. The service is also very helpful. TBH is located on Pell Street on a street that isn't as well travelled and outdoor seating was not available even though the street was closed to car traffic for my earlier visits. Because I traveled by car and temporary parking is always difficult to find in CTown, I asked if staff would bring the takeout order to nearby Bowery St to meet me, to which staff happily obliged. That's incredibly helpful. read more
COVID report: no outdoor seating; takeout and delivery only at the moment. Food: My boyfriend and I got the night market crispy chicken bento box as a late afternoon snack and it was incredible. The chicken was just perfect. I loved the cabbage, too. Next time: I want to try the pork chop! $12 credit card minimum. read more

I had high hopes after seeing photos of their pork chop rice. It is just called gold crust pork chop rice in English, but in Chinese it reads "golden thick cut pork chop rice". What I got was a piece of super thin pork chop that's dry. Perhaps things have changed since those people posted, or I was unlucky. Judge for yourself... read more

I've never been to the physical location but it's a staple in my lunchtime delivery from Uber Eats. The pork belly bento box comes with tender braised pork belly, cabbage, an egg, and minced pork meat sauce all on top of white rice. This one dish was filling enough for lunch but I ended up ordering other appetizers. The Taiwanese sausage had a sweet and porky grilled flavor to it, reminds me kind of sweet pork jerky. The crispy fried chicken was still hot when I got it and not yet soggy. The batter has a good flavor and the chicken was juicy. Overall I love this place for Taiwanese lunch boxes. read more
