Chiu Hong is likely one of the oldest Cantonese bakeries in Chinatown, and the last of its kind. The interior is old-school, with worn-out furnishings and that no-frills, local charm you don't see much anymore. You know it's the real deal when most of the customers are Chinese elderly. The moment we walked in, we heard the familiar sound of the classic TVB news intro. It instantly brought back our childhood memories lol iykyk. They offer a variety of traditional Cantonese pastries, like almond cookies (杏仁餅), fortune cakes (發糕), red bean paste pastries (紅豆酥), and more. But they're best known for their peanut and red bean mochi, which costs just $1.50 for two. *Coconut Tart I had a sudden craving for a coconut tart (椰撻), even though I grew up favoring egg tarts. The tart is crumbly and buttery, while the filling is slightly chewy, similar to the sweet coconut filling of a cocktail bun (雞尾包). It's always topped with a canned cherry, which gives it that iconic look, even if the taste is artificial lol. If you have never had coconut tarts, I'd recommend the one from Chiu Hong as it tastes very authentic.

Chiu Hong Bakery is an old time Cantonese bakery in Chinatown, one of the last of its kind. It's a low-key, no-frills community shop, a Chinatown OG that's been in the area for over four decades. It's filled with the local elderly crowd who like to read the newspaper over a cup of tea or chat with their friends. Here you can buy a bunch of buns and mochi balls for only $1.50 each. The prices at this old school bakery are considerably low. They sell perhaps the best mochi balls in NYC! You can choose between red bean or peanut mochi balls, two for $1.50. They're soft, gooey, chewy, fresh, and not too sweet. Sounds kind of funny, but it always feels really nice to sink my teeth into them. I really like the texture in the peanut mochi balls because the peanuts inside are crunchy with sugar, the outer layer has shredded coconut, and the mochi part is very soft, chewy, and stretchy - so it's like a whole medley of textures. Cash only! Chiu Hong Bakery (161 Mott St, New York, NY 10013) Open daily 7am-7pm What we ordered: $1.50 (2) mochi balls $1.50 coconut tart $1.50 egg tart $1.50 coconut bun $1.50 milk tea

Came here because I heard they have the best handmade chinese mochi in the city, and I was skeptical, but this place is a hidden gem for sure. Having grown up eating this kind of mochi in my chinese family, I knew I was in for a treat when I walked in and saw that this was a very no-frills, community bakery for the elders of Chinatown. The service of course was authentic, too, and I got 2 mochi (one of each kind - peanut and red bean filling) for $3. Took it for a solo picnic and bit into the softest, stretchiest, freshest chinese mochi I've had to date. This place is DEF one of my favorite finds all year and I would go back in a heartbeat. I want to try their other items now, too, to see if they match in quality. But I'll brush up on my chinese a bit beforehand haha.

Napoleon thin and crispy with just the right amount of cream in between.

This is the best bakery to get the Chinese Napoleon pastry. Thin and flakey. Many other good things to try. Prices are beyond reasonable.

Definitely a hidden gem! The bakery with filled with lots of old grandpas and grandmas! That's how you know it's good, just kidding but it was good. I ordered the two mochi for $1.50. There's two flavors: peanut and red bean. The peanut is definitely the superior one. I tried the red bean one fresh and the mochi skin is so so soft. The red bean filling was just okay though. Nothing special, barely noticed it. But the peanut mochi was amazing. I had it hours later, skin was still so so soft. I enjoyed the peanut filling. There were small pieces of peanuts inside and maybe some sugar. Overall: definitely try out their mochis! So soft, affordable, and delicious.

Challah-like sweet bread ($1.75)

What a gem! I've walked past this place probably hundreds of times and never thought to look past its slightly dusty windows. My loss. However, recently I read that they have delicious mochi, and I decided to wander inside. Truly, the mochi live up to the recommendation--and at a unbeatable prices. They offer two flavors, peanut and red bean, two for $1.25. They are on the smaller size, but you really don't need much to enjoy the richness. They were perfectly soft and gooey, with just the right amount of sweet but not too sweet filling, and oh-so-soft sweet rice, and shredded coconut on the outside. Superb! I also tried what appeared to be a challah-like braided bread for $1.75. This was so light and fluffy, but sweeter than a typical challah. Very well-priced for such an airy loaf! One of the workers was so kind in offering a free egg tart for my son, who was getting fussy while I was perusing the selection. The staff really are wonderfully kind and patient. Not the best egg tart in Chinatown since it has a hard rather than flaky crust--but still delicious custard filling. This bakery is definitely worth many more return trips, especially for the mochi, especially if you're a mochi lover like me!

My mom has been buying moon cakes from here every year for the longest time. They're consistent with the quality and offer many traditional flavors. You get to mix and match (4 per box) or you can buy individually. As for their non -moon cake products... they don't have many bread/pastry variety, unless it's just like that during mooncake season

Came here a couple times in the past few weeks, each time I got there late afternoon/early evening so their famous mochi balls were sold out already but I got a couple of the Chinese pastries with a flaky exterior and lotus seed or red bean paste filling. Was very pleased with these, the flaky pastry was perfectly reminiscent of the ones I grew up eating, with a shell that is light and slightly savory and a bit on the drier side to complement the generous amount of filling inside. Their moon cakes also look good, and though I haven't had the occasion to buy an entire moon cake yet, I plan to try these in the future. As others have mentioned this is an old school spot so don't expect much in terms of decor. The space itself is pretty good-sized for a bakery, with a few larger round tables set up with chairs, though due to covid I haven't seen more than a couple other people in the shop around late afternoon time. That being said I thought the service is pretty cordial, no frills but sufficiently pleasant. Covid-relevant notes: Staff wears masks and pastries are handled tongs and placed directly into wax paper baggies. All the pastries are inside glass pastry displays and a clear plastic tarp between the display and the ceiling is set up to run most of the distance above the display cases.

This is a review for their deep fried dumplings 角仔, which is a traditional Chinese New Year food. Recommended by foodies online, I went and got a box of it for $11. It is an old fashion Chinese bakery. It looks like a hole in the wall with minimal decorations. Prices are cheap for bakery items but I didn't try anything else. The man, I believe he was the owner was friendly. The deep fried dumplings was generous in portion. It had a flaky shell and crunchy filling including peanut , sugar. Definitely will return for their fried dumplings again and may also try other items.

I got moon cakes from this tiny bakery in Chinatown. The moon cakes are really delicious. A box of four is $30. I did not see too many other options for baked goods but I would love to try!

see it looks watery?
tasted as bad as it is.

i was in the neghborhood with my family.. i came here to buy a hot dog bun & ice coffee. a little snack? anyway the drink is watery like what other people would say..i agree.. when i ate the bun kinda salty? the bread is hard in some part of the bread? maybe sit to long turn bad? the ice coffee is cheap only thing i liked? is not good tasted.. i rather buy a little more expensive have a good tasting ice coffee .. i know other places that is better than this. cost about $2.75. i don't know why people giving 4-5 stars. they're crazy.

I come here for the "Napoleon pastries". Not too many bakeries make this anymore and this place is well known for making these. So affordable and tasty. Goes well with a cup of coffee and is one of the few remaining old school Chinese bakeries remaining in Chinatown.

I love Snoop Dogg so Mochi. He's my favorite Wrapper!

My review is for the red bean mochi. The best in Chinatown. Perfect chewiness. Three for $1.25. You cannot beat that price.

Got off the E train and when we looked for Chinese food, this place popped up with good reviews and it was just a short walk from where we got off the train. My buddies ordered the special lunches and we also got two types of xlb's, beef chow fun, and some fried dumplings. The special lunches come with a little fried rice, cold garlic flavored noodle, choice of egg drop or hot and sour soup, and main side. My buddies all enjoyed their meals. The beef chow fun was also really good and beef was nice and tender. The xiao long baos were excellent and is comparable to any place in California like DTF. Nice and juicy and great with some ginger, soy sauce, and spicy chili. Friendly service and food comes out pretty quickly. Credit card is accepted. Bathroom was also very clean, which is sometimes rare in some Chinese restaurants I have been to. If you're looking for a good Chinese meal, stop here when you're in the Chelsea area.

I hadn't been to EDH in a while and was happy to see they do have later hours (with a smaller late night menu). The place was pretty busy at 10:00 PM last Saturday, with a wide range of diners, which is good for business. The food though, at least that night, was really disappointing. My friend had the chicken dumplings. He said they were okay. I thought they were overcooked. My steamed shrimp shumai were fine, but steamed, they didn't have much flavour. The edamame, on the other hand, had way too much when it should have almost none. I don't know if it was excess salt, MSG or something else, but not good. I should have sent them back. I hope this was just an off night for the kitchen.

The pacing of the meal for the quantity of food received seemed very rushed, and we didn't really have a chance to relax and enjoy any of the courses. However, the quality of the experience was a complete disaster particularly for the price. Clearly, the packed restaurant would disagree, but for the four of us anyway, we would not return. It started with the check in process at what felt like a long hotel front desk with multiple, self important hosts and hostesses overseeing your entrance to the cavernous bar/waiting area. One problem is the noise is so deafening that you can't really hear what they say to you but we check in a few minutes early and waited obediently in the bar area chatting. After about 30 minutes (15 after our reservation time), and watching numerous parties large and small who arrived after us be seated by the hostesses wandering through the dimly lit space who peer quizzically and ask your name, my husband went to ask for an update. (We joked that those vibrating lighted buzzers alerting when your table was ready would have been super helpful, but it was amusing to watch while we waited). It was clear they somehow lost track of us as she had him repeatedly spell our (not unusual) name. Anyway, after that, within 10 minutes after that we were taken downstairs to our seats (but not before standing awkwardly in the large dining area near packed tables waiting while our table was cleaned). Server with a heavy accent was kind and mostly helpful so none of this is on him. The busser who managed to spill half a pitcher of cold water on my husband's back, soaking his shirt and jacket and barely apologizing, is a whole other story. We managed to get a glass of his mediocre Cabernet comped for the experience. If I sound annoyed, I guess I still am. I had high hopes for a fun and tasty experience in a cool part of the city and it just wasn't.

Then we got a handful of apps - everyone else swore by all the ones they'd had - but I just tried the Salt & Pepper Shrimp and... sweet baby Jesus, this little plate had a wicked amount of flavor from every angle.  "Aggressively seasoned" might be an understatement.  Wild. Onto the mains and I ventured towards their Spicy Drunken Noodle (my go-to whenever I'm hitting a Thai restaurant on my home turf) and... yeah, you probably guessed it - incredible. Not the biggest portion but they made every single component sing with flavor. With so much going on - of course I needed to indulge with another drink (hey, I wasn't driving!). There were six of us, it came to about $100 a person... welcome to NYC. But we did get a wide selection of plates/food and those two drinks accounted for about $40 of my tab. (And you'll never see such a heavy wine pour at a restaurant... they filled the glass almost to the rim - which was not even something I'd do for myself when I'm home.) Definitely recommended.
