Had an excursion at NYC and my sister recommended this place. Never been to any Portuguese style restaurant, so I was stoked to this place out!! From the moment I walked into, I knew this place had it all. The ambience was very upbeat and bright which was very refreshing. Our server at the bar was top notch. He was extremely knowledgeable and helped guide me throughout the meal. For appetizers, we got octopus carpaccio and cod and potatoes croquettes. The octopus had to be the most tender octopus I've ever tried! It was cooked perfectly and was served with potato chips which gave it that "crunch factor". For the main entree I got a Porto Sandwich. Essentially it's a sirloin steak covered in white plum bread served with a beer sauce. The sauce coupled perfectly with the bread. The white plum absorbed the beer sauce which really amped the flavor profile. Of course we saved room for dessert and we got chocolate mousse. The mousse was to die for. Amazing experience at Leitao! To start it off, the host Nano was so kind and helpful. I arrived before my friends and had to wait at my table for a bit so he got me champagne while I waited. Then our server Frank was just as friendly. He helped us choose our dishes. The stars of the show were the octopus (both salad and plated but I think the salad was the winner) and the fava bean spinach dip. Randomly, the bread was delicious and fresh. The croquettes were great as well. We also got the fries and ribs. We ended with the chocolate mousse, which was on fire so that was cool. As far as drinks go, the passion fruit margarita was my friend's favorites but I liked the Porto sour. Overall, great experience thanks to Nano and Frank + the food lived up to the hype. The reservations needs to be a month ahead. The restaurant offers us to dine in 30mins before our time with a total of 2 hours and 45mins. The restaurant was small but very clean. The Staff are very kind especially Victor our server. Speaking of Suckling Pig. The flavor was rich. I could tell that it was done well. It was juicy and was clean thoroughly. It was a good experience. Let me just say that it will cost you. My only suggestion for Leitao is properly arrange the table placing the Suckling Pig in the midde and surrounding it with all the side dishes that came with it. Leitao is seemingly flying under the radar despite being an exciting, vibey, and relatively well-priced restaurant in the heart of the West Village. It doesn't book up quite as fast as other spots of its caliber, so you should take advantage while you can. Leitao serves an impressive variety of Portuguese fare with an equally dizzying array of beverage options, both classic and original. The space is both lively and chill, refined and down to earth, overall striking a balance that's ideal for the area. Though the food is the main draw here, Leitao also offers an impressive cocktail menu, including classics, spritzes, and a good selection of Portuguese-inspired drinks. Upon noticing that I was having some difficulty deciding on my first drink, our server offered some suggestions based on my preferred flavor profiles. I ended up starting with the The Port Tonic (Tanqueray Orange; Sandeman Fine white Port, thyme, fever tonic), which is apparently one of the go-to drinks in Portugal. I was hesitant at first because I thought I wanted something more exciting than a gin and tonic variation, but it turns out that this has plenty of intrigue. I can't say I know much about port but I can now say with confidence that it completely transforms your typical gin and tonic and may have you planning a trip to Portugal before you've even received your food. The Fumo Negroni (Dos Hombres mezcal, Sandeman 10 Year Old Tawny Port, coffee infused Campari, Gran Classico, chocolate bitters) was equally excellent, subbing tawny port for your typical sweet vermouth. Food-wise, most of the plates here are conducive to sharing and that's definitely the route I'd take here -- the menu is exciting and varied so you should aim to try as much as you can. The portions are pretty generous as far as upscale NYC restaurants go, so keep that in mind when you're ordering. I'm only going to review the dishes I tried, as there were a couple I didn't end up tasting due to preference/food sensitivity. Eats, below: Octopus salad: A The menu does describe the octopus as "extra large" but even so, we were not ready for a tentacle of such proportions. We all agreed it was cooked perfectly, and execution makes all the difference with octopus. Salsa verde and bright cherry tomatoes made for grade accompaniments. Broccoli rabe with pepper sauce: A- A solid side though less memorable than the other dishes. It was also quite greasy, as was the other side we ordered, so someone may have been a bit too enthusiastic with the oil this evening. Spinach and fava beans: A Giving this an A even though the spinach was pretty oily, only because the flavors were incredible and I was surprised that I could like beans this much (they're typically not my thing but someone else in our groups loves beans and advocated for this dish, as did our server). Shrimp in lobster sauce: A- This was pretty good. I had initially been wanting the tiger shrimp which is prepared with chili and garlic so I think I was having some fomo while eating this, which is a milder and creamier preparation. Still, the flavors were solid and it was enjoyed by all. Duck rice: A This was the last plate brought out and it's a generous portion so we knew immediately there'd be leftovers. Lucky for us, because it was delicious and I could eat it for days. So much to love in this - the rice was aromatic and super flavorful and everything else (kale, sheep's milk cheese, linguiça) was equally great. Though we were too full to order dessert, they brought us these complementary little custard tarts (Pasteis de Nata) should probably come with a warning for being dangerously good. We stumbled upon this cute little Portuguese spot and decided to give it a try because of the European and chic ambiance. So glad we did because we had the best dinner and drinks and time here! We sat at the bar and ordered spicy mezcal margaritas. This was recommend to me by my friend. We came here as a farewell dinner to me as I'm moving. She said it's been on her list for a while. For starters we got the linguica and the steak. The wait staff recommended we share an entree because they are designed to be large and shared family style. So we got the Arroz con Marisco, which is a seafood stew with rice. All of the dishes were freaking awesome. It had just the right amount of heat when it wanted to, tons of flavor, and if my stomach was bottomless, I would've eaten everything. It was that good. The linguica comes out flambeed and the staff cut it up for you and do more flambee tableside. It wasn't too busy when we first got there but by the time we left, it was full with a line outside. It's only July, but I can already say with confidence that Leitão will be one of my top favorite restaurants of 2025. Our dinner was nothing short of exceptional. My brother has been to Portugal and we've also enjoyed portuguese meals in Macau, a former Portuguese colony with a vibrant portuguese food scene. He confirmed that Leitao is absolutely legit. Even my bf, who had never tried portuguese food before, was totally obsessed after this meal. While they have a no-tipping policy, a 20% service charge is built into the bill. To top it off, she surprised us with complimentary desserts--three pastéis de nata on the house! ＊Porco Preto $26 *** Everyone raves about their pork ribs--and the hype is real. The ribs were fall-off-the-bone tender, simmered in a rich garlicky sauce. The outer was grilled to a crispy perfection. ＊Salad de Polvo $33 ** The XL octopus put me in awe. Paired with zesty salsa verde and assorted veggies, the salad was refreshing. Today while meandering about the West Village we had the amazing fortune to happen upon Leitao! We had no idea of the culinary masterpiece that would ensue! We then ordered the Shrimp in Lobster Sauce accompanied by the truly PERFECT Portuguese bread. The shrimp were tender, skillfully prepared and enveloped in a complex, silky, slightly smokey, lobster sauce. A really spectacular start!! Next we ordered the Piri Piri Chicken and the Bacalao. Beyond the gorgeous presentation of these dishes, the flavors outperformed all expectations!! The ample portion of chicken was layered with authentic smoky, spicy and bright flavor..juicy and falling off the bone! The Bacalao, which I am not always a fan of, was OUTRAGEOUSLY DELICIOUS!! This beautiful fish was tender and flaky with a perfect sear on top. It is served over a bed of sauteed spinach, elegantly dressed in a bright lemony sauce and topped with crispy and crave-able fried onions I could have eaten by the bowl-full!!! And just when we thought it could not get better...our amazing attendant,..delighted us with an order of the Pasteis de Nata for dessert. I've never tried it before but can assure you if I ever see this on a menu it is a priority order!!! The delicate custard tart is subtly sweet and sprinkled with cinnamon and a dusting of powdered sugar. The texture is smooth and creamy and the taste is warm, soft and unbelievably satisfying. Leitao always comes up when I've been delinquent in making Friday night plans and need a dinner spot on Resy. Ironically, when I finally came here (for a farewell dinner of sorts), it was packed to the brim, and we needed a reservation weeks in advance. But the wait was worth it. This place is straight up delicious and reminiscent of some of my favorite meals in Portugal, albeit with a more American twist. The best: - Bife a Cervejeiro: Perfectly tender prime sirloin steak in a cremini mushroom and pepper sauce to die for. I wanted to bathe in this. - Chicken Piri Piri: You don't always see this African dish on Portuguese menus, so it was a pleasant surprise to find it here. The chicken was lovely and juicy, quite smokey, though the piri piri sauce could've been spicier. - Camarao: Large, plump wild Ecuadorian shrimp sautéed in a garlicky sauce served with perfectly crispy bread--the epitome of comfort food. - Broccoli Rabe with Pepper Sauce: Exactly how I like my rabe...lightly charred with a nice pepper sauce , topped with almonds. But maybe I'm bougie? The good: - Mashed Potato with Oyster Mushrooms: Great crisp mushrooms, but the mashed potatoes were too oily. - Porco Preto: Well-cooked Iberico pork ribs in a tasty wine sauce, but wish there had been more flavor and depth. - Polvo: The Octopus was overdone and the sauce didn't quite capture the smokey sausage and paprika essence it should've, but it was still decent. We also received complimentary pasteis de nada, though it was partly a bribe to get us to leave our table as soon as possible for the next party. But you know what? I'll take it. Creamy, custardy bribe.... For libations, we indulged in some refreshing Cucumber Agua Fresca and Passion Fruit. Service was quick and friendly, though the place could use more AC on a sweltering summer night. Leitao is one of my FAVORITE Portuguese restaurants in New York City! Every time I've come here I've had such a magical experience. The food. The wine. All perfect. And I generally never had to worry about seating they have outdoor seating, a bar area, inside seating, and downstairs seating for like a private parties. The service is incredible, everyone is so helpful when pairing wines with foods like octopus. I don't eat Octupus everywhere, but this is one of the places I will always eat it from. We went to Leitao for lunch on Sunday and we were truly impressed! As soon as we walked in we were greeted with warm smiles and politely taken to our table. They have a digital menu with pictures and clear descriptions of the food which made it easy for us to order. We had the Portuguese Sausage, Octopus salad, spinach with fava beans and Shishito peppers. All of them were Delicious! We were all pleasantly surprised by the fava bean purée. They cook the Portuguese sausage table side which makes for a fun table side experience. For the mains we tried the Seafood with rice and the Braised lamb with potatoes. Can't recommend this place enough. Definitely one of the best restaurants in the West Village which is saying a lot cause the competition is stiff. We frequent this restaurant and are always blown away by the food and service. Just recently, we sat at the bar to dine for the first time and immediately were met with the level of service we expected from our amazing bartender. Unfortunately, we ventured on the menu and got something we didn't quite love. Everything else we got was 10/10 as usual. The bartender immediately took care of it and got us dessert on the house. He also wouldn't let us leave a tip despite us begging to do so (we hate sending stuff back). Just goes to show that the service staff there isn't necessarily in it for the money but instead to give the guests a good experience. First time here at Leitao Portuguese Restaurant the food was amazingly tasty! Some of the dishes I loved didn't make it into the pictures, but they're definitely etched on my taste buds. That sirloin steak in garlic sauce was the bomb! The sauce was so good we kept asking for more Portuguese bread just to dip in it. We actually ordered two of everything no regrets! The chef's recommendations were on point. For apps, we shared the octopus carpaccio, roasted beet salad, cod potato croquettes, and little neck clams, all so good. Then came the mains: chicken piri piri, arroz de mariscos (saffron seafood rice), and of course that sirloin steak I already couldn't wait to rave about! She was Brazilian so we were able to chat in Portuguese and even get an inside scoop on her favorite dishes. The octopus was absolutely divine, nice and tender. What an amazing experience at Leitao. We went with a large group 6 people. I made a mistake with my reservations, when I reserved on Resy app it only gave me two options: Outdoor or Patio. I thought that Patio would be something indoors and/or a garden area in the back, because obviously "outdoor" is outside. However, when we got there, patio was the outside area! How did I JUST find out about this place?! My friends from out of town mentioned their friends recommended this place so went for dinner tonight (we made a reservation). The staff here are amazing and friendly! I love the interior & the vibes. Now the food...nothing disappointed. Everything was perfect, 5/5 so here is what we ordered: - Octopus salad: the octopus was HUGE and tender so good. Loved all the flavors combined. - Ameijoas em caldeirada (little neck clams): The star was the actual broth. It was so delicious and we crushed all the bread dipping into. I could eat this all day. - Bife a cervejeiro (sirloin steak in garlic sauce): The sauce was AMAZING. It was like a yummy thickish garlic mushroom sauce, went so well with the steak and bread as well. - Robalo (sea bass): From the crunchy delicious skin to the sauce to the perfectly made fish - it all went well together and I loved it. - Pasteis de Nata: A classic! Came for dinner and sat downstairs in the cellar, which is super cute. I tried: + Passionfruit margarita + Amantes do Carvalho + Bacalhau (cod) + Pork ribs + Seafood with rice + Burrata & iberico salad + Spinach with fava beans + Roasted potatoes + Pastei de nata My favorite dishes were the burrata, spinach and potatoes, followed by the pork ribs. Egg tart was great. Portions were really big, so we definitely over-ordered, but I never complain about having lots of leftovers. read more

It was a really nice anniversary dinner. They made us feel special with some special treats, food was outstanding, and service was real good. We sat at the bar and had octopus salad, little clams and the pork and faba beans. So so good. And port to end dinner. Will 100% come back. read more

Had a wonderful meal here on the last night we were in town, a Sunday. This spot stays open late which is always nice for a more European style of dining. The service was so friendly and helpful, and the dishes came out in a timely manner. The piri piri was some of the best I have had, not overly spicy in a good way, and nice and smoky. The shishitos and potatoes were both well seasoned sides and fresh. The almond based drink was one of the most interesting and best we have had in some time. I just got back from a trip from Portugal so was still craving some good portuguese food here in new york city. Glad that I came across this gem in the west village. They have seating inside and outside - the outside seating is cool because you're right next to the bike lane and not exactly on the street with pedestrians. The service was really quick to take our order and refill our waters too! For foods we decided to try out the Piri Piri Chicken and the Bife Tres Pimentas. Overall, they were both really tasty - the chicken was decently juicy and came with a lot of oily sauce. The steak was probably my favorite cause it had a classic pepper sauce with it. I wish the dishes were larger in size - the protein portion were good sized but they don't come with sides! Definitely keen to try the other dishes I missed from Portugal here another day! read more

The food was delicious! I always loved Portuguese food and Leitao didn't disappoint me. Everything was great and I loved the pork ribs the most. Egg tarts were hot and yummy. The drinks here were very good too. It's a small and cozy restaurant but the decors have a lot of Portuguese elements. Service was just okay. The bill adds 20% service charge but the service we got was a bit underwhelming. Our waiter was very busy and it was hard to get his attention when we needed him for something. My wife and I spent a week in New York eating out every single day, trying all kinds of great spots, and on our last day we ended up at Leitão -- easily the best overall experience we had on this trip. We went in without huge expectations and walked out genuinely impressed. Everything we ate was really good -- even the cod fritters (Boulinhos), and I say that as someone with a Portuguese family where those dishes are taken seriously. These were better than my grandmother's, and she made amazing ones. The vibe is great: relaxed, fun, and completely unpretentious. We sat at the bar and were taken care of by Pelé, a guy from Burkina Faso who made our night without even trying. His service was kind, gentle, and attentive without hovering. At the end he even brought us some pastéis de nata on the house -- such a thoughtful touch. The food is very good, the atmosphere is excellent, and the service is what made it truly special. We both left really happy. The only downside is that the automatic tip didn't let us tip more, because he absolutely deserved it. A place that doesn't try to be anything other than what it is -- and that's exactly why it stands out. We'll definitely be back. read more
