    Crab roe

Came back to Xie Bao recently and thought their crab roe was definitely better this time around. It was umami and perfectly briney. I wish the portion was bigger because it was that good. Definitely recommend the crab roe over rice option than over noodle. We also got the crab roe soup dumplings that were delicious. We also got the clay pot with seafood and tofu. It was piping hot and the sauce was delicious. Service was on a little bit on the slower side, but overall I recommend Xie Bao!

Came here on a Friday night and we were seated right away! We had to order the crab noodles and crab rice and both were so delicious and savory. We also ordered the mapo tofu and cucumber, braised pork, and sweet and sour rib. Everything was fast, hot and delicious. We were pretty full at the end of our meal and everything was actually pretty heavy! Service was excellent and the waitress was always quick check up on us.

Visited Xie Bao for dinner with a party of 4. Ordered a number of dishes to try including their viral Crab Roe over Rice. It came with a generous bowl of crab roe that you can pour over a bowl of white rice. I also really enjoyed the Braised Pork Rind with Crab Roe in Clay Pot, which came with a variety of ingredients. Other dishes we tried were their Sweet and Sour Spare Ribs, Braised Pork Meatball with Crab Roe, and Crab Roe & Roast Duck Soup Dumplings.

Visited on a friday night around 6pm with a party of 4 and it was pretty empty. Service was very fast, they gave us 2 menus which was helpful when ordering. We ordered both the crab roe with noodles and rice and both were delicious! Everything was very tasty.

The restaurant shares an entry space with the fish spot next door; same kitchen is my guess. Simple, wipeable/throwaway table coverings, and simple decor. While they have the seafood boil, I'd skip it - not enough spice and garlic butter to really enjoy it. It was pretty empty on a Tuesday night, their house Yangzhou bao are far better - crawfish and shrimp was what I thought we ordered but they brought over Peking duck with chicken... 4 medium buns but otherwise was ok. $45 for the crab roe on rice or noodle... that was a bit steep. There are better options!

This place is connected to the Fish House next door. The crab soup was my favorite dish. They also have lots of fish options and crab roe dishes. We got pan fried dumplings with crab roe and a tofu with crab roe dish. I really enjoyed having dinner here. We got 3 fish options and they were all really well seasoned and sauced. I also really like the sweet and sour ribs. They give radish and peanuts as free appetizers and you can ask for refills.

Located above Mango Mango, need to take elevator/stairs to 2nd floor. I've seen their special crab roe over rice/noodle dish on social media and bookmarked their NYC Flushing location, but since I was in the neighborhood in NJ, I decided to try it in NJ instead. 1) Crab roe over rice - 3/5 I was expecting to be wowwed but was quite disappointed. The flavor just didn't hit. I've spoken to other friends and they all think this dish is just mid as well and not worth the price ($37.95) It did come with a small plate of woodear mushrooms which was nice. 2) Pan fried yellow croaker - 5/5 this was really tasty, perfectly fried and they cut it in half for you. The bony spine is there and easy to remove and the tinier bones were almost nonexistent or fried enough to chew and swallow. But it's good to be careful of the bones anyway. $6.95 for one. 3) Crab roe and pork pan fried buns - 3.5/5 you get 3 buns for $13.95 which I think is kinda crazy. It's good but I've had better elsewhere. The bun was soft and crispy on the bottom, and the meat was juicy but to me, it didn't have enough of the juicy factor. I like when I bite into these buns and the juice just drips out, but it wasn't like that. Still good though! But not amazing and I can barely taste the crab roe. They have an extensive menu (see pics). And the waiter was very friendly. The restaurant is spacious with lots of seating.

I've seen photos, videos, heard from friends that crab roe over rice was a must try food, so I was eager to visit XieBao and finally get to experience it. With signage outside labeling this as both Fish House & Crab House (sister restaurants connected to each other), I was entering this restaurant with the understanding I was going to have a seafood forward meal, but what I was not expecting was the price point at which this came. Overall, the food was mediocre. We ordered a few dishes and none really stood out to us -- in fact, the item we kept gravitating towards was the free pickled radish that they provided as an appetizer. The crab roe pan fried buns ($14 for three pieces) weren't anything special, though they did have a decent amount of crab meat the flavor wasn't strong and the filling was overall lacking (in volume and taste.) The buns, though claiming to be pan fried, were on the lighter end of color and were not crispy at all. The crab roe over rice itself was pricey, understandably, but my table was extremely disappointed upon seeing the size of it. My friends have tried this at other restaurants in the past and for the same price, have received way more food elsewhere throughout NYC. The crab roe arrived separately from the rice, so it kind of looked disappointing presentation-wise. As we rationed our portions we realized there was not nearly enough rice for us all, and we had to ask for more rice about 3x in the span of a half hour before someone eventually brought us some. Other items we ordered just weren't good, whether it be because the flavors were overpowering with sweetness or if it was doused in oil. I was really looking forward to crab soup dumplings as I've seen in photos of the menu online, but this wasn't on the printed menu when we visited. Tables surrounding us were feasting on seafood boils and seemed to be in good spirits, so that might be the go-to when visiting XieBao. If you're really craving crab roe over rice or really want to try it, it's not bad for a one time meal, but definitely better options elsewhere in Edison.

Let's start with their famous dish, crab roe with rice. Looks good, smells amazing, taste is a little bland and lacking in crab flavor. Would give a 3.5/5 and wouldn't order again because of the price. The pan fried buns were good, not great. Top was soft, bottom was crispy but the filling was also lacking in flavor. The yellow croaker though was the star of the show. It was crispy on the outside, moist on the inside and super flavorful. Would come back just for the croaker. Ambiance was a little dingy, there were boxes laying around and didn't look like parts of the store were in use. Service was okay, nothing good nor bad to say.

The food is definitely delicious and flavorful. Although the pricing is higher than expected, but it's worth a try. Besides the crab meat noodle, I actually really like the soup rice. It was sweet and great seafood taste. The service was good. Waiter was very friendly and gave some suggestions since we're first time guests there. This would be a place I would return back.

My parents are OG Shanghainese, I speak Shanghainese at home with them. I've been to shanghai 8 times and lived there for a year previously for work. Was looking forward to experiencing their shanghai style dishes. Crab House & Fish House are through different doors but connected inside, sharing a kitchen and bathroom area. Not exactly the nice ambiance inside but not bad. I hate plasticky table coverings. Unfortunately, the food is just not very good. I went with the intention of trying the crab roe over rice BUT when I saw the portion size on a table next door to us, at $45 each no thanks. So ordered some different other things. Service here was straight up amateur hour - he was definitely trying hard though. Smoked Fish appetizer looked nothing like its supposed to look in the photos or other places I've tried it. Just not good. The pork rinds in fish soup with crab roe was seriously lacking seasoning and was FISHY. No seafood should be fishy - that just means its not fresh. Really not good. The sautéed eel dish was super salty - probably the best dish of the meal unfortunately. Good stir fry technique, cooked well. Only like 10 tiny pieces of eel in the whole dish though. Mostly peppers and pork strips I think. Not very authentic Pork Belly in Lotus leaf was also just "ok" at best. Braised well but just lacking any flavor outside of just salty. Spend your money elsewhere - plenty of amazing food options in Edison

I don't understand what some of the negative reviews are about because this was some of the best food that I've ever had! I got the crab roe over rice, that's a life changing dish! This was my first time having crab roe and honestly I just want to put it on EVERYTHING! Me and my friend also shared a seafood boil and it's one to compete with the seafood boils down south. The staff was very friendly as well. If there was one ding I could say I thought it was a bit pricey. But the food is quality and I left full, and with leftovers. I'm ready to come back here every time I come to Jersey

The space is nice with good seating and a clean, comfortable setup. Tried the stir-fried chili tofu, brown rice, and noodles. The noodles were the best part--flavorful and well-cooked. Unfortunately, the tofu was quite average with not much taste, and the brown rice was a bit too dry for our liking. Parking is tough around this place .. paid parking mostly . Overall, a decent late-night option if you're nearby, but the flavors could use a boost.

The sauce was not just sweet. The sesame comes through. Deliciously crispy outside and juicy inside. Roast Pork Fried Rice 10/10! This is hands down the BEST RPF I've tried. If you're in NJ and craving Hong Kong-style wonton noodle soup, head to Wonton Guy in Edison. It's a no-frills local gem tucked away in a tiny strip mall off Route 27, with a few parking spots out front and more in the back. The space is small (only 10 tables!) and nothing fancy, but the value is hard to beat. It's always busy, and after you take your first slurp of the soup, you'll get why. Service is fast, so the tables turn over quickly. I was able to grab a seat when I walked in on a Saturday evening. The menu is simple and offers 3 main options: 1.) noodle soup with toppings 2.) soup with toppings (no noodles) 3.) lo mein with toppings served with soup on the side From there, you pick your noodle type (egg, flat rice, vermicelli), as well as up to 3 toppings (wontons, dumplings, beef brisket, etc.). There are also a few side dishes like shredded pork in chili tomato sauce, deep fried fish skin, and curry fish balls. They even sell some items raw like wontons, noodles, dumplings, and sliced beef. And the best part is... the prices are very affordable! Most of the dishes are around $11-$16. My order: *Two Toppings (wonton + beef brisket) Noodle Soup [$12.75] - Where do I begin? Every single part of this meal SLAPPED. The wontons were MUMBO JUMBO and generously filled with fresh, plump shrimp that were sweet and juicy. The noodles were soft and springy. The beef brisket was SO tender with a melt-in-your-mouth texture. And the broth? Super rich, aromatic, and savory. It's made of shrimp skin, pork bone, dried flounder fish, dried shrimp, and dried monk fruit, but it doesn't taste fishy at all. Each table is stocked with condiments like vinegar, homemade chili oil, and soy sauce to customize your soup. The chili oil packs some SERIOUS HEAT, so watch out. This was hands down one of the best noodle soups I've had. I was sad when I finished it :-( *Hong Kong-style Milk Tea [$6] - I really enjoyed this! The black tea was bold and strong--almost too strong for me, but the milk balanced it out nicely. I only wish it had boba! Everything tasted authentic. Quick backstory: The owner comes from a family with GENERATIONS of experience making wontons and running noodle shops in Hong Kong. He grew up there and brought those family traditions to his own restaurants in Toronto... and now Edison. All those years of experience clearly show in his food. The broth is simmered overnight, and the wontons are freshly prepared every morning. No shortcuts here--just decades of tradition, skill, and a whole lot of love in every bowl. Ugh, I wish I lived closer because I'd be a regular. It's hard these days to find a place that REALLLLLLY delivers a memorable meal that's both tasty, reasonably priced, and served in generous portions. If you're within driving distance and debating whether it's worth the trip--DON'T! Wonton Guy is absolutely worth a visit, even if it's just once. I drove an hour to try it, and I still think about those wontons all the time... no joke LOL.
