Once again while in DC I wanted a late night bite after a long day and night before I headed to bed. I was tired of the convenience type items that I had gotten prior and decided to try and find something open at the time I was out. I was really in the mood for pizza and was lucky enough to find that this was within walking distance. I showed up and there were a few people already inside getting their eat on or waiting to take theirs to go. I was in the mood to take it and run and enjoy it in my bed back at my hotel. I decided to not look like such a huge pig and got only two slices to go. Good old pepperoni. They took the slices and put them in the oven for a few minutes to crisp up the crust and melt those cheeses some more and they were in my hand in just a second after that. I stopped on my way out to sprinkle some extras on top and then almost ran back to my hotel so I could dive into this thing. Man, I should have just gotten a whole pizza to go. Those slices were so amazing that I wanted more after I devoured my two slices. And for the price I paid, I would have been better off to get a whole pizza. And I am not one to shy away from cold pizza in the morning for breakfast. read more

I regretted that decision after walking for a solid 10 minutes in the freeking cold. Never again. Enough jibberish. Wise guy pizza BY THE SLICE!! I never been so happy to step into a pizza joint! They have several pizza stacked out in front and you get to choose which ones you want. I always opted for the usually pepperoni pizza. They would take your pizza, stick it back in the over, and give it to you when it's nice and crispy! The staff is also super nice. I went here thrice. Slices tried: paneer tikka, margherita, Korean chicken, chicken paneer. One bite and we were in LOVE. Came in on a Saturday night around 11 after a play and we really loved the variety, especially since I am a vegetarian and DH is most certainly a meat lover. The sauce on the tikka inspired pizzas is a MUST try, it's creamy but not heavy and still has that extra kick of heat that we both loved. The Korean chicken is unusually looking but don't be deterred the flavors work well together in pizza form. The margherita is a classic and they did it justice here with a crisp crust (but not burnt), a flavorful tomato sauce and fresh cheese and basil. We already have new slices to try picked out for next time (there will be a next time). This one is well worth the wait in line! read more

I haven't written a review in ages, but I had to log in just to sing the praises of the VEGAN SUPREME. Attention vegans, vegetarians, veggie-curious, people that love someone who is... this is it. Hands down the best slice of Vegan pizza I've ever had. A lot of places offer vegan options by throwing some unseasoned protein and uncooked veggies at a plate or wrap... Not the case here. The "meat" is seasoned, crispy on the edges, and honestly so close to what I remember of their meatball pizza, that I made my husband double check, haha. I have been to Wiseguys at least 15 times since moving to the neighborhood 10 months ago. Take note: although they say they close at 2 am I've seen them serving pizza until 4 am on the weekends. Whether you're getting a slice to stave away a hangover after hitting the clubs, feeling lazy and not wanting to cook on the weekend, Wiseguys is always there for you. It's extremely convenient for me since I literally live in the same building. Even though I've been so many times, I've actually only ordered 5 kinds of pizza. I guess I'm a creature of habit. Of the slices I've had this is my ranking. Meatlover - Meatlover is probably 90% of my orders. But not overwhelming to the point that the toppings threaten the structural integrity of the slice Wiseguy meatball - pretty interesting. It has extra sauce laid out vertically on the slice. In addition to meatballs there are chunks of Parmesan (I think?) cheese. Pepperoni - it's pepperoni. Need I say more? Grandma - crunchy crust cut in squares. Thick at the edges. No meat but the basil and cheese is generally pretty good. Mushroom Truffle - I love truffle but was honestly not impressed by this slice. Alright pizza, they would've got a better rating but the guy working the front was rude AF. Ordered two slices, paid for them, and literally stepped outside to make a 2 minute call. All of sudden, I hear the same guy yelling at me telling me that pizza was ready. This wasn't just a Hey, your pizza is ready. He was yelling with anger and giving me attitude as I grabbed my box. Do I go out of my way to make my way over to Wiseguy Pizza frequently? You're absolutely right I do. The Pros: (1) In-and-out service and dining. I mean it's pizza by the slice? What more could you want than having it hot and ready? The guys behind the counter are friendly but want to keep the line moving, and thankfully, it doesn't take much to get people in-and-out. Pick a slice, grab a drink, maybe get a dessert(?), pay, and find somewhere to sit. No hassle, no pains. (2) The pizza. You know how I said "what more could you want"? Well, you *could* want great pizza, and this is where you'd find it. For my own personal reasons, I'm a pretty big fan of pizza-by-the-slice especially when its from a local place that is not Little Caesars. It's warm, it's well cooked, and the options are numerous and plentiful. I can confidently say on the 5 or 6 times I've made my way to Wiseguy over the last few months, I have never had a bad slice of pizza from them. (3) The prices. I've yet to find a local place that can beat the price of Wiseguy pizza for the quality they deliver. Part of it comes from the by-the-slice pricing model, and part of it comes from a well-run establishment not trying to boost their margins on pizza. I commend the place for not raising prices, and Wiseguy if you're reading, I'll probably come anyways if you bump your prices like a dollar. The Cons: (1) "Hot and ready" may not have been the best way to describe Wiseguy pizza. From what I've seen, the pizzas can sit "out" (they're in a glass case, so don't worry about pests or anything gross) for anywhere from 10-20 minutes at a time without being sold/eaten. This means that anytime you order a slice, they usually toss it in the oven to heat it up. I don't really fault the place itself, because it seems like the only way to reasonably sell pizza-by-the-slice, it just kind of sucks to see moderately-cooled pizza have to be tossed in an oven just to sell it. Yeah I know, "beggars can't be choosers", but this is Yelp, and you should know I'll be doing both. Conclusion Come to Wiseguy. Give it a shot. I can't begin to tell you the number of times I've walked around the Mall or downtown to do errands and then developed a pizza craving, only for my hunger to be satiated by DC's pizza darling. There may be better pizza out there, and for better prices too, but in a world where we are losing sight of well-run establishments places fast, Wiseguy is an important reminder of what we desperately need: pizza-by-the-slice. read more

It was pricey. For 5 slices and two drinks it costs us $32.00. And there were beggars out front. We sat outside and at least two people came to us begging for money for pizza. I didn't like it. While I started off as a big fan of Wiseguy, my last few visits there have left a little bit to be desired. The pizza doesn't seem to have that crisp New York-style crust anymore, being a bit thicker and chewier than when they first opened. I also noticed that the condiments (like garlic and the red pepper flakes) are now in open bowls just sitting out in the dining area, rather than in shakers as they had been in the past. That's a big turn-off to me - and the cheese graters, one of the unique things about Wiseguy, are long gone. What's really soured me over my last couple of visits, though, is the staff. On this last trip, I ordered a couple of pepperoni slices, with the guy behind the counter quickly serving me two slices of pepperoni, telling me that he had just taken the slices out of the oven and that they were piping hot. Of course, they weren't, being more towards a warmish room temperature. In the past, the slices behind the counter have *always* gone back into the oven before serving, but obviously not any more. Could I get them heated up? I could if the guy behind the counter hadn't disappeared and if the cashier was even borderline helpful - but the cashier barely said anything to me. After all that, I guess it was silly of me to expect a "thank you" given how much service here has gone downhill. If the staff can't be bothered, neither can I. read more

You can pick from about a dozen different one of a kind pizzas and get one slice or buy a whole pizza. Personally I like to pick and choose one or two delicious slices at a time. Selling NY Pizza in DC? So you wanna be a Wise Guy huh? Well watch yourself Giuseppe or you'll end up at the bottom of the East... Potomac River. Would you like some concrete shoes Luigi? I didn't think so. All this aside, when I say that this is the best pizza in the DC/DIstrict/DMV/whatever you want to call it area... that's really not saying much. Pizza around here leaves a lot to be desired, and most of that which it leaves to be desired can only be satiated somewhere like NY, Buffalo or Chicago. However I have to be honest. With their slightly high prices, iffy service, massive long lines, cops coming in and out, and huge selections, as well as their open-until-sunrise (not really but nearly) hours of operation, I was a little hopeful. I was correct to be hopeful. This slice would hold its own in NYC. It wouldn't be the best in town. It wouldn't be one of the top 20. Maybe not top 50. But it'd be okay. Maybe a four star in NYC. Or in Buffalo. But in DC I have to give it a 5, because it's basically the only place which actually makes edible authentic NY Pizza. Well done guys. Very Wise of you. But if an employee is in the bathroom, leave him well alone. Because if you knock to see if it's empty, he might burst out of there and try and fight you. I'm not afraid of you dude, you're about 5 foot 3 and you just made me a delicious pizza. You can't be this good at pizza and also be good at fighting. Sorry.
