COME HUNGRY and choose your company wisely! You'll want to sample every plate on the table and if you're smart, you'll enjoy as many apps as you desire and share your entree! The crab purse app was sinful! Full of the juiciest large lump crab meat I've enjoyed in decades. And the Bolognese Lasagna was simply divine! Truthfully, I had no desire after a long workday to even have a cocktail, but the waiter was able to recommend a great glass of red wine to compliment what was already ordered and he was 100% correct. Sorry, I can't recall the vintage, but it brought out the flavor of the Sunday sauce, spectacularly! And while I did manage to leave room for chocolate mousse cake for dessert, I have a better suggestion! We went for our anniversary and the place was already decorated for Halloween. Not what I expected in the 1st week of September but it was nicely done. Food was solid and service was attentive and friendly. We came for lunch. They provide bread for the table. It was served warm. I found it underwhelming. Apps- salsiccia di casa- sweet Italian pork sausage. It was good and not salty, Bonus! Entrees- Rigatoni con salsicce- my husband's choice even though it had more sausage. He was happy with his choice. Linguini cardinale-one of their signature dishes. It was good but very rich. We should have shared our pasta dishes because portions were generous. But all delicious! God dam do I love me a fine Italian restaurant! Went here for my birthday midweek and Filomena's did not disappoint. I studied the menu closely in my anticipation to coming to this restaurant and I had my heart set on the Lobster Cardinale, there is a blurb on the menu that reads Bill Clinton ordered this when he dined here and all the reviews on Yelp said it was a must have. Below is my verdict on the dish. The Lobster Cardinale was very delicious with a heavy in flavor sauce but not so heavy as an Alfredo which I always am concerned will lay in my stomach for hours afterward. The lobster meat was plentiful, I barely finished all the lobster meat, and only had perhaps half the pasta, as we had to order appetizers and dessert as well for the birthday dinner (I mean I did drive through three states to get here) . Now to put some perspective on the plate, this dish was great yes, however the menu of this place is so freaking amazing if I could have a do over, I would choose something with more of a variety of seafood mixed in with some of their hand rolled pasta. We started with Aracini balls which were extremely large and came two to an order. The inside which I have captured in the below photos was to die for. Specifically, the meat inside which had a distinct deep taste of sausage that bordered on sweet and spicy. There was also deliciously melted cheese inside the ball and perhaps some rice, the other two ingredients I just cannot stop thinking about, so it is clouding my judgement on the other items in the appetizer. The sauteed calamari was some of the best I have ever had with a delicious tomato sauce which is best enjoyed after you finish the calamari by dipping your fresh bread in the leftover sauce. The cannoli is world class and so beautifully prepared I almost felt bad eating it, almost : ) The meal is topped off with a complementary shot of either Sambuca or Ameretto. I chose the Sambuca and they brought out coffee beans encase you want to drop three beans in for health, happiness, and prosperity. Haven't been to filomena since pre-pandemic. The restaurant was packed busy on a Tuesday night. Our server was very nice and professional but it took almost 10 minutes for someone to come address our table. We ordered an app and then a couple entrees to share. The taste was good across all dishes but both dishes came with pasta and the pasta was way overcooked. Disappointing for an Italian restaurant. Very lively and historic restaurant at the tail end of Georgetown near the water. Came for a ressie at 11:30am when it's supposed to open but it took them like 15 mins to set up so we didn't get seated until later. The restaurant is old school and dark and dim but has charm. It's the type of place that's dingy and hasn't changed in years and that's the appeal. I got the vodka sauce rigatoni and the two sausage links. The sauce itself came with tiny sausage pieces lodged in the sauce so technically you could go for the chicken as your protein instead. The sauce was good and rich but overall just a touch salty for me. The complimentary bread was good and fluffy and they give you the pesto oil but don't eat too much because the pasta portion is huge! Filomena has been a Georgetown staple since 1983, and the history is everywhere. It's known as the restaurant that's dined presidents, celebrities, and just about everyone in between, with walls covered in photos to prove it. You can even watch the nonnas in the front window rolling fresh pasta by hand. I ordered the Linguini Cardinale, one of President Clinton's favorites and on the menu since 1983. Absolutely delicious. I also had the Vitello alla Marsala, and the portions are huge across the board. They start you off with three kinds of bread, hot and fresh, along with a pesto sauce that is incredible. To finish, they bring a choice between two different digestivos, a nice touch to end the meal. The atmosphere is dark with this pink lighting that gives the whole place a really cool feel. This spot has been on my list for ages and finally got to take my girlfriend here to celebrate our anniversary. The inside is very well decorated but a bit dark. We started with the grilled octopus (which were alright) and the arancini that were amazing! The complimentary focaccia bread they give you is also great (pro tip - dip it in the red sauce that comes with the arancini). For our mains, we got their signature linguini cardinale and the recommended seafood carbonara. Both the pastas were cooked to perfect al dente and were very large portions with lots of seafood. I've heard about this place from several people and tonight a friend and I decided to take our chances with no reservation. The hostess apologized that we were on a two-hour waitlist without a reservation, but we were all in at this point so said go ahead and put us on it. Simultaneously we staked out the bar and, after about a half hour, scored two seats in the very small, 6 to 8 seat bar. They serve the full menu there and we really enjoyed the very kind, knowledgeable bartender, so decided to drop from the waitlist and stay put. As a vegetarian, my offerings here were a bit slim but there were a few. Three entrées were listed under pasta with vegetables, but one, the carbonara, does contain pancetta. The bartender said we could leave that out to make it vegetarian and it was the most popular choice so I went with it. It had spinach and ricotta ravioli, mushrooms and some peas. It was absolutely delicious. When we left we saw a sweet nonna making raviolis in the front window. Amazing. All the pasta is handmade. My friend got one of the specials which included lobster, scallops and pasta in a lobster sauce. The bartender described how they press the lobster for the sauce and my friend was out of her mind at how delicious it was. She's taking her leftovers on a flight home to Cleveland. The bartender mentioned he was a nondrinker like myself and was happy to put together a mocktail for me. It was orange, cranberry and pineapple juice with some soda and it was delicious, made even better with a garnish of a cherry and orange slice that made it feel intentional and special. We got tiramisu for dessert which is probably going to go down in my memory as one of the top tiramisus I have eaten anywhere. They have a dessert case in front that reminded me of a famous dessert case at Gullifty's, a restaurant from Pittsburgh's distant past. In one of the joys of sitting at a bar we struck up a conversation with two older gentlemen, one who was celebrating a birthday. The bartender brought over some Sambuca and amaretto and offered each of the gentlemen and my friend a cordial glass of either. Everyone chose the amaretto, and I was a bit sorry to no longer be drinking because I would have been all in on the Sambuca. That was a nice touch. This place goes all out on decorations, currently for America's 250th birthday, but my friend said last time it was like that for Halloween. This restaurant is a bit of an experience and I really enjoyed it. The only thing stopping it from being five stars was my disappointment in them not having a red sauce suitable for vegetarians. It's Sunday sauce or tomato sauce, both of which have a meat base. Even the eggplant lasagna has Sunday sauce which is an odd choice as this is something a lot of vegetarians might otherwise order. I've run into this a lot and know from my own kitchen it's not hard to make a marinara, which would be a lovely option to offer. A fun night out. With one drink each and a split dessert, plan on spending at least $100 a person here. My bill was just under 100 for vegetarian entrée, mocktail, half the dessert and tip. read more

Did a lot of research about good eats in DC and this place was on all the lists. once inside I looked to my right and there was a lady you can see through a glass door hard at work on making pasta. It has the ambience of an Italian restaurant with random decor that is not Italian like a Freddie Krueger head hanging from the ceiling or a gremlin on a shelf. Very Italian meets Halloween shop. Our waiter was very good at explaining the extensive menu. For our appetizer we got cheese sticks that was a very gooey cheese in the middle. Different but good. As I looked around I noticed how large the portions were. They were huge. I even asked my husband did he want to share an entree but we wanted two different things off the menu. I will say my linguini cardinale was delicious with lots of good flavor and so much lobster meat. It was a lot and had so much to take with me to go. Let me start off by saying ..... I really wanted to like this place given that it's such a prestigious and well known establishment, but sadly it was rather a huge disappointment. When you arrive you walk down a set of stairs to arrive in the restaurant. The restaurant is very dark. Some would say maybe it's setting some type of ambience but yeah no. It feels like entering the red light district in Amsterdam. Dark, dim and very red. They have a very large cake display that is quite entertaining for the kids as they can choose flavors for dessert. They had many many cheese cakes of. Offer - cookies and cream, triple chocolate, strawberry cheesecake and so much more. We were seated quite promptly. The tables were probably purchased in 1983 and so were the chairs. They were old , dark and just worn down. We were practically on top of the table next to us and every time someone walked through the aisle they knocked my seat and my son's seat.There is literally nowhere to move around. It feels very claustrophobic actually. The menu has about one billion options. So yeah very daunting. I just asked the waiter what the good ones ( with no pork) and he did a good job pointing some out to me. He also recommended food for the kids as there is no kids menu. So we opted for the fried calamari and caprese type salad as the appetizer and we shared the veal pasta dish. The kids shared the chicken schnitzel with cheese sauce and a side of pasta with red sauce. The food came out literally 10 minutes after we ordered. It was so quick. The fried calamari was not good and I did not eat it. The caprese type salad was 3 pieces of tomatoes with cheese on top - nothing mind blowing. The award winning slow cooked veal pasta was just very very average. The pasta itself had crispy edges - weird. The meat was nice and soft but it was just smothered in this mushroom sauce which literally just ruined the flavor of the meat. The chicken schnitzel was huge and just very average. It was just way too smothered in cheese sauce. The overall food experience was meh and let's just say the portion sizes are so huge that we had many doggy bags to take home. For dessert we ordered a slice of the cookies and cream cheese cake. The kids loved it but once again - huge. We took it home. Would I venture back? Nope. The prices charged does not match the quality you would expected from a similar restaurant. While I respect that hr establishment was opened in 1983 - I think they need a serious update in decor, lighting and food . So apparently this was Clinton's favorite Italian and Clint Eastwood's too! So you walk into the restaurant entrance and you see a chef making freshly made pasta in the window. Go down the stairs and you reach the dining area. This is a big restaurant and we had a 4:30pm reservation because couldn't get anything later but I wanted to see what the hype was about. So the decorations are a little cheesy - fake plants, red lighting (hence the red tinge in my photos). Service is pretty prompt and I do wonder if that's because they want people in and out because of how famous they are. Irregardless, the food is amazing. HUGE portions of quality Italian food. We had the Wagyu carpaccio to start (it was good quality because you could see and taste the difference). We had the lasagne and it was out of this world. We shared a plate between the two of us but it could've fed 4. They are really generous. The surprise at the end was the sambuca or amaretto at the end - on the house and totally unexpected. The restaurant itself lives up to the social media hype in that every inch is decorated for the holidays. They do not skimp on the ambiance. We also got a bottle of wine to share and that was good as well. I got the rigatoni with sausage and I ate that for two more meals after! We also tried the lasagna which was delicious as well. My complaint is with the appetizers. We got the fried mozzarella and meatballs. Both were flavorful and delicious and both were probably the best of each item I've tried. Now, the menu description does not state marinara sauce for the fried mozz, but I've seen so many pictures of it with marinara sauce plus I saw other tables getting it with the gravy boat of sauce so I was kind of expecting it. When it came without sauce, I asked for sauce and was told it doesn't come with marinara sauce, just the two on the plate. I say okay, I tried, I eat the fried mozz and it's amazing and I use the marina sauce from the meatballs. That would have been fine, but then my waiter comes to check on us and sees me scraping my last bite of fried mozz in the meatball pan and offers to bring me more marina. The exterior is beautiful and interior decorated from floor to ceiling with everything imaginable; fake flowers and plants, stuffed bunnies, lights. This has been on my list of places to try for a while and I finally made it. It's located near the Capital One Cafe. My friend and I came for dinner on a weekday. We made a reservation online, which I definitely recommend doing as the place was packed when we arrived. There is a coat check, which you may want to opt for. While there was enough room for me to walk between tables, it could be a tighter fit if there were coats on the back of chairs, depending on the jacket. While waiting to be seated, you can gaze upon the dessert display or the decor (they still had holiday decor up when I visited). Bathrooms are at the other side of the dessert display if you need it. It was packed inside and kind of loud. It was the type of environment where there was so much chatter and noise that there is never a quiet moment. You could have a conversation, but you might need repeat yourself. If there was music playing, I couldn't hear it. We didn't wait too long to be seated. After putting in our order, a bread basket with bread dipping oil was served. I'm not sure what the norm for this place is, but I was expecting the bread to be warmer than it was. It was interesting that they served different types of bread in the basket. Nothing really stood out though (like Ozzie Rolls). We ordered the Insalata Di Strawberry as our appetizer and the Tortelloni Di Michele and the Eggplant Lasagna as entrees. Everything tasted great and the portions were large, but there wasn't anything I would experience a craving over. What I have mixed feelings about was the service. After taking our order, we never saw our waiter again. Different people served food, refilled water, and checked in with us (on occasion). However, it took an unusual amount of time for our food to be served after the bread basket and in between the appetizer and entrees. The tables beside us that were seated after us had gotten their entrees already. In addition, the only reason we got the check when we did was because we had to ask the waiter of the table next to us for it. They do have a tradition of serving complimentary amaretto or sambuca with coffee beans. It was nice although not aligned with our personal tastes. I will say that I was stuffed at the end and took back leftovers that reheated well. I wouldn't make this a regular haunt, but would be interested in trying more stuff on their menu - especially the desserts. read more

Our first time dining at Filomena, this has to be Authentic Italian! The food was carefully prepared with Love and precision. Not overly salted, or sauced. The service we encountered was very welcoming and friendly. Although the lighting was a little on the dark side this takes nothing away from our delightful experience. read more

Filomena has been in Georgetown for decades and this was our first time. All of the rave reviews about the service and food are on point. We had a great experience and the it felt like an old school NYC Italian restaurant. We started with a Caesar salad which was fresh and plenty for two people. I was looking forward to the meatballs and order the cheese ravioli that comes with three meatballs. It seemed like I was sitting at my grandmas table eating her homemade meatballs... perfection. As the waiter suggested, save room for dessert as it is special. He was telling the truth. We split cookie and cream chocolate mousse cake. Words can't describe how good it is. There are probably 8 different cakes to choose from as well as other desserts. From after thanksgiving to a week after Christmas, Filomena is decorated for the season in excess which is so beautiful and fun!! It is definitely worth the price and planning to get a table! read more

As a man with an Italian mother, I can say with confidence you won't be disappointed. This was some of the best home-style Italian food I've gotten from a restaurant. Oftentimes there's something wrong with restaurant Italian food. Maybe it's the serving size, the sauce, the quality of the meat, the pasta itself, or the price. I have to say they all lined up perfectly here. The price point is rather high, but considering quality and quantity, it makes perfect sense, and I'd say is well-priced. I'll also add - I ordered my food from a delivery service. So I didn't even get to experience the restaurant itself, where I'm sure the food would have been even better. If I had one piece of constructive criticism, the meatballs were maybe a tad too salty. I loved them, but to eat all four in the Matrimonia, I felt a bit tapped out by the end. This is also because the serving size is, as mentioned, massive. So really hard to say this is a criticism, as if there were fewer or smaller meatballs, you'd be extra grateful for the punch they have. read more

If you're staying anywhere in the area just book a rideshare and go! As you enter, wave to the woman making raviolis and other great Italian dishes. The dining room is always decorated per the season you visit, so it always changes. The service is top notch and don't forget to save an appetite for the huge variety of desserts they offer. The vodka rigatoni with chicken was great as was the shrimp appetizer and free bread. The deconstructed cannoli was unusual, but worth it for a try. Tables for two are a bit cramped, but worth it for a meal. It was $148 though for two people. read more
