We've now visited Maison twice and have been beyond satisfied both times! In fact, so much so, that I'm planning to take my sister-in-law here for her birthday. From the vibes: moody wallpaper, a divine bathroom sink with wax-coated wine bottles serving as candle holders, to the service: Thomas was great!, to the cocktails and extensive wine list, everything was resplendent. There hasn't been a single dish we didn't enjoy, but I'm admittedly writing this after visit #2, so I'm focusing on that more as it's fresher in my mind. Both visits we tried the miso caesar salad, the heirloom tomato salad, the filet mignon carpaccio, the hiramasa crudo, and the stuffed chicken. They were just too good to skip on our second visit! My husband swears dessert is why he wanted to go back -- the choux bun dessert is TO DIE FOR! The menu had changed ever so slightly on our second visit, so we tried a few dishes that weren't present before: the tarama and the sea bass. The sea bass was my favorite bite of the night! Maison was excellent all around. It lived up to the hype. We visited on a Sunday at 5 PM, with a reservation we made a few weeks in advance. The space was gorgeous, with a striking staircase near the entry, a bright bar area, and a small, dark dining room in the back. I liked the light-dark transition a lot. The food was also gorgeous and tasted great. We split 6 dishes. The tomato salad (Heirloom Tomato, Whipped Feta, Raspberry Vinaigrette $21) was amazing, although the feta disintegrated quickly and I wish it came with two pieces of bread instead of one. The escargot (Escargot, Yellow Chartreuse, Hazelnut $24) is a dish that seems to stay on the menu even when other dishes rotate out. The escargot already have shells removed, and are served hidden under sauce and a puff pastry. Another great dish. I was a little worried it would have anise flavor from the Yellow Chartreuse, but it did not. The eggplant dish (Fairytale Eggplant, Ricotta, Tabouli, Pomegranate, Za'atar $24) was good, but our least favorite of the night. I wanted it to have textural variation -- perhaps served with some crunchy chips as a dip. The entrees were both successful. The chicken (Brioche Stuffed Chicken, Artichoke Barigoule, Jus Gras $36) is another menu mainstay. Every element was delicious. I do think it could be larger (I read online that a lot of work goes into it, which perhaps explains the smaller portion size). The lamb loin (Shenandoah Lamb Loin, Au Poivre, Confit New Potato $48) was their take on steak and potatoes. The lamb was perfectly cooked and the potatoes nicely crispy on the outside. In retrospect, I should have ordered a more adventurous dish, but I still enjoyed it. For dessert, a cheesecake (Basque Cheesecake, Vin Jaune, Wildflower-Honey $15). Excellent, especially with the bit of honey. We had a few glasses of wine, which were all good. Service was also great. They did a great job giving us space but also being attentive, and had lots of good service touches like folding napkins if someone got up, wiping the table, replacing plates and cutlery, and suggesting how to course the meal. When I asked about the two orange wines, they gave me a taste of both so I could decide. I have two small quibbles: 1) our waiter was a little difficult to understand through his accent 2) a few slices of complimentary bread would have been great to soak up the delicious sauces. We visited for a special occasion, which they acknowledged at the host stand, with a candle on the dessert, and two gratis glasses of sparkling wine (one for each of us; a nice touch, when most restaurants only give you one glass). Had a great time here! The ambience feels like an experience. The lighting and design are great. The restaurant is cozy though so if you don't like being in close proximity to other tables this not for you. Food was delicious! We got a bunch of things to share. I ate the butter like it was frosting. It may be cultured, but I'm not!! Had the carrots, escargot, the deviled eggs, and the pasta. Also had the octopus pepper gilda thing. Our server, think his name was Hunter, said that was the most popular main. It was very delicious, rich but not overly so. The martini was nice and came with a side car. Great presentation. When my friend saw the martini she said this makes me feel like i know how to live. They have a good wine list, you can get good stuff without breaking the bank. Their espresso is nice. Nice place if you care mostly about atmosphere, but for me, it's not worth a second visit. Seating & Service: I reserved a high-top for two on a Sunday night, and luckily got seated at a private table rather than the communal table. It's unclear to me which reservations are for the communal table. The waitstaff were very polite and attentive. They also didn't rush us out and let us linger, which I appreciate (but this may be because there wasn't a reservation right after us). However, I do wish that they provided more detail about the menu and drinks without having to be prompted. We had to inquire about recommended dishes, suggested wine pairings, and portion sizes ourselves. Food: FYI, the dinner menu generally goes in order of size, with the smaller plates at the top and the larger plates towards the bottom. As expected, prices per dish also increase as you move down the menu. All the menus (including prices) change frequently so don't rely on the menus on the website to guide you. We ordered the Warm Manifest Bread ($9), Miso Caesar Salad ($19), Dry Aged Beef Tartare ($23), and the Escargot ($24) plus one cocktail ($18), a glass of wine ($16), and dessert ($15). For these prices and based on other reviews, I expected every bite to be fantastic, but the portions were very small and the quality and taste were average. The escargot was a little too salty for my taste and was strangely hidden under a puff pastry. I enjoyed the tartare the most, but it only came with three small pieces. a delightful wine bar where we did not get wine, but we did get food. the menu rotates by season and is mostly a list of ingredients, so if you don't know what a "jus gras" is me neither... but maybe i'm just uncultured the dishes were presented beautifully and ornately, often in unexpected ways. i love a good artistry moment, but some of the dishes fell flat or at least couldve been balanced out in how umami they were. - beef tartare came out in little tacos and was quite good - loved the refreshing summer squash - escargot came out as a piece of flakey bread shaped as a shell with the unshelled escargot underneath. i would rather have shelled escargot with the bread on the side - brioche stuffed chicken was just chicken with a mushy brioche on the side... certainly not worth the $35 and a bit lackluster. sorry for ordering it - the mussel itself was good but the olives were SO briney. in hindsight we shouldve gotten bread on the side lol A+ ambiance: mostly bar seating (which I favor anyway for shared small plates) and a few tables upfront and in the back. the bathroom was one of the most beautiful at a restaurant. and a great yap session with dalia!! read more

KenScale: 8.0/10 Visit: March 2026 Another thing besides food that my wife Jun and I are passionate about is wine. We first got to know each other through shared love for a glass of wines (especially at a rooftop or outdoor wine bar on a gorgeous day in Manhattan), and we even had our wedding in Napa Valley. Ever since we moved to the DC metro area, we continued to enjoy trying new wines, but mostly in our home instead of outside, partly because Bethesda (where we live) doesn't really have a killer wine bar. When the team behind Lutèce and Pascual opened a new wine bar in Adams Morgan last year, I wanted to see if Maison Bar À Vins would solve that problem of finding a casual wine bar where we can try a few wines along with delicious food. I'm happy to report that our recent visit last month to Maison Bar À Vins was quite satisfying. For the Maison project, Matt Conroy (the executive chef of Lutèce and Pascual) put chef de cuisine Jason Chaveson (formerly at Reverie; still can't get over the fact it closed so abruptly) in charge of the kitchen, which is located downstairs away from the dining room. The relatively concise menu at Maison features mostly French dishes that are smartly prepared and also great for sharing. We both quite enjoyed the dish called tarama (a traditional Greek dip made from salted fish roe) inside seaweed choux buns. Same for the crispy tête de Cochon with rich, creamy Mornay sauce that was not as heavy as I would've expected. Getting one or two vegetables at Maison is also a wise choice. We liked the carrots with 'nduja and Bleu d'Ambert cheese, but it was the dramatically plated beet tart (I certainly didn't expect an entire chunk of beet on top of the tart) that really stole the show with terrific texture and freshness. For larger dishes, the brioche stuffed chicken seems to have quickly become a signature dish at the restaurant. The texture of the chicken breast was on point and the choice of green-colored brioche worked quite well. If you still have room for dessert, my vote is to go with the delightful profiteroles with banana and rhum that would not be out of place at a top bistro in Paris. We also tried the Basque cheesecake and Vin Jaune and wildflower-honey; based on the way Jun savored the soft cheesecake, I immediately knew it was a success. Getting a reservation at Maison Bar À Vins will definitely require advance planning, especially given the relatively small size of the dining room behind the bar area (which seems more amenable to walk-ins). I also was impressed with the breadth of the wine list covering different geographic regions in France and beyond, with many of the bottles at fairly reasonable price points and leaning on natural style. The darkly lit dining room where we dined was a little cramped but otherwise worked fine with as a nice dating spot or for gathering with friends and family. The service was overall friendly and seamless as well. We had a lot to like about Maison Bar À Vins with familiar yet well-executed food and an enticing wine list; I was told that the food and wine menu changes fairly constantly. I look forward to visiting again with Jun next time we see some significant changes to the menu. It is certainly a wine bar in DC worth visiting for serious food and wine experience. read more

The drinks were inventive and beautifully balanced, creative without trying too hard, and the wine selection was outstanding. For having opened a relatively short time ago, Maison Bar A Vins is functioning like a restaurant that's been open much longer. It feels right at home in the neighborhood and runs like a well-oiled machine. There is a lot more space in there than it would appear from the entrance, and they plan to expand into the upstairs in the future. Good news, since reservations are hard to come by. Wine is as good as you'd expect, and their recommendations hit the spot. For three people at dinner, we had four of the smaller plates (on the first half of the menu), three of the larger plates (on the lower half), and two desserts, emerging satisfied but not overstuffed. Standouts include: -bread, served with an appropriately huge quenelle of soft, salty, rich yellow butter -farm greens with banyuls vinaigrette, fresh, crunchy, and tart -eggplant with peppers and labneh -grilled octopus, cooked perfectly with a rich squid ink sauce -campanelle pasta with mushroom sauce, perfectly savory with just the right amount of crunchy bread crumbs on top, makes you want to lick the plate -dark chocolate cake. I *shhh* don't even like chocolate. I liked this cake. Service is friendly, knowledgeable, but laid back, and for such a gorgeous place, you don't get the sense that they take themselves too seriously. Renovating the old Cuban restaurant where I spent my 20s dancing late into the night, the space is unreconizable (in a good way). The grand staircase entrace quickly gives way to a warmly lit bar and hightop seating area perfect for drop-in tipples with friends. Reserved seats are in the back where dark patterned wallpaper and low light feel entimate and a bit flirty. The space isn't big, but there's room to squeez past tables w/o too much fanfaire or loss of personal space. It's still opening month so the energy level in the space is high. Servers great you with water and a run-down of the menues. It's a wine bar but they have a moderate cocktail menu that shouldn't be slept on. Wine's by the glass are broken down by broad categories (sparkling, white, orange, red, N/A) and run $12-16/glass with a correct size pour. We tried one from each category (except N/A....you know me) and with input from our waiter...nothing...missed! The reds were diffintly curated to hold a theme with each region still showcasing a hint of smoke/leather, good fruit and well integrated. The oranges weren't too natty and the whites were acid-forward and crisp. Now they do have a food menu. I'd warn you to not come here starving (or do, just be prepared to order everything) as dishes are really snacks, meant to keep the pallat allive between sips. But they did not sleep on the execution of the dishes either. Highlights were the escargot in a mushroom compote (don't be scared, these aren't your grandmas snails), the crab and corn pasta, and the smoked eel croquettes. Dishes come out fast, but the night unfolds slow. With the light from candles flickering on your table, it's easy to melt into this inviting space. And in true AdMo fashion, we ran into several friends also trying the spot out. Drop-ins will be tough until the opening months fever dies down, but this place, this space, is a more than welcome addition to this cities growing love of wine bars. I only give it one star versus zero because the hostess was so nice. She acknowledged that it was our anniversary but the entry was very crowded and it seemed a little chaotic from the get go. The server greeted us with a glass of champagne to acknowledge our 20 year anniversary again very kind and unexpected... Then he asked if I had any dietary restrictions and I explained it to him that I'm a vegetarian gluten-free. Then a waiter came by five minutes later to ask the same exact question. Then another person came by to ask if we needed anything. It was a constant rotation of waiters asking us if we need anything, but actually not doing anything or remembering anything. It was a joke of people incompetent to our needs who didn't seem to care about us. On top of that we had two separate menus one was outdated. So had to pivot our plan. After studying the menu for awhile because no one was there to take our order. They did not accommodate my vegetarian and gluten-free requests whatsoever and instead kept suggesting worse options & saying thank you to us over and over when we left after drinks only when we should be the ones thanking them (read the room I was crying in tears of disappointment & disgust at this point) ... We asked for the check & couldn't get out of that place fast enough. High expectation. Horrible experience. Great atmosphere, but really disappointed with the vibe of stuffy guests. Over priced menu. I went with a friend to try this newly opened wine bar in Adams Morgan. It's a small, intimate space with a wide array of drink options. We tried the eel croquettes, which had a lovely gooey texture inside with a crisp exterior and a lovely dipping sauce. The creste di gallo corn and crab pasta was very satisfying and a decent portion. The chocolate and cherry mousse cake was rich, with an interesting (and delicious) denser texture, and the olive oil and vinegar-soaked cherries were a great accompaniment. The choux with fig leaf ice cream didn't wow me as much - the flavor of the ice cream wasn't really coming through for me, and I didn't finish it. My friend really enjoyed her cocktails, especially the tomato one. They have some very creative dishes and I'm curious to go back and try more. The ambience was good and it wasn't too loud despite the tight quarters. It's very popular right now, so make a reservation if you can. I enjoyed trying it out, and I'll be curious to go back and sample some more menu options in the future. We sat at the bar and staff did a great job explaining the menu, but I wish the descriptions of dishes had been included with the menu, as we had to ask for a lot of details to get a sense of what we were ordering. Maison Bar a Vins is exactly what its name suggests: a wine bar focused on small bites--nothing more, and nothing less. The wine selection is strong, the atmosphere has a great vibe, and the food itself is genuinely delicious. That said, a couple of things are worth noting. Portions are extremely small. Everything is designed to be shared, and while ordering several plates could be filling, this isn't a place to come expecting a satisfying, full meal. The biggest drawback of an otherwise enjoyable evening was the service. As a newer spot, they seem to still be working out the kinks, and it showed. The staff appeared overwhelmed, and some of our dishes were never put in by our server. While a busy Friday night is understandable, at this price point I expect a more seamless experience across the board--food, drink, service, and atmosphere. I found the staff attentive but not particularly friendly. The food was good but my dish could have been warmer (although I'm sure they would have addressed it had I said something) and the wine pours were very small though the selection was nice. The atmosphere and the restroom area were great. Finally, I was put off by the automatic service charge that was never mentioned by our waiter although it was called out on the bill. I don't understand the need to charge a party of 2 a service charge. I'm a good tipper - I don't need it added and in fact, I have never seen it added for a couple and we dine out pretty frequently. read more
