Continuing on my journey to eat at all of DC's Michelin Star restaurants, I was so excited to try Masseria! The space is absolutely beautiful. Even though it's right in the middle of busy Union Market, it feels like its own little oasis our servers were super attentive (my water glass never got even close to empty!!) We opted for the 6-course dinner (they offer a few different levels and this was right in the middle ) which was 220pp I think the breads, especially the potato focaccia and the savory bombolini, as well as the pastas were real standouts of the evening. I had one cocktail, The Last Word, which was delicious but a bit pricey at like $28. I think the duck course was my least favorite, also because it was the last course before dessert and I was absolutely stuffed by then. The desserts were very tasty and a great way to end the evening. Overall, I enjoyed the experience, and if I were to go again, I'd probably opt for the 4 courses because 6 almost did me in haha read more

Masseria was a pretty incredible dining experience overall. We did the Chef's Tasting Menu, an eight-course menu that truly felt like a culinary journey. Each dish was thoughtfully presented and I found myself genuinely excited for what was coming next. The chef clearly put a lot of care into curating the experience. The portions are small as expected for tasting menus, but by the time I reached the main course I was actually stuffed. The restaurant itself is beautiful inside and out with a modern, contemporary aesthetic. We had the pleasure of sitting at the chef's table and watching the kitchen in action firsthand. The staff throughout the restaurant were welcoming and attentive. The one miss of the night was the Signature Wine Pairing (~$185 per person). The sommelier curated about eight pours, but only two stood out--the rest were extremely underwhelming, deheartening and didn't justify the price point. I would personally skip the pairing next time and just order a bottle you know you'll enjoy. That said, the food itself was superb and the overall experience was excellent. I can't say enough about how great this restaurant was! We visited on a Friday night to try the chefs tasting along with the wine pairing, the service was incredible and each course was thoughtfully decorated and tasty. It's a nice date night location with seating and heaters outdoors as well. Street parking or parking lots are plenty as it is located in Union Market. When we arrived, our table wasn't quite ready and for two, we spent about $1100. I would still recommend the splurge. read more

I had called ahead about needing to get out by a certain time, as well as a birthday we were celebrating, and everyone knew our situation before we arrived and they were still able to give us a great experience. We chose the 6 course menu, and had the caviar tasting. The best bites of the meal were by far in the caviar tasting. So flavorful. I'll remember that forever. All the dishes were amazing. We came here for my husband's birthday and I was 7 months pregnant at the time. They were very accommodating and made updates to the dishes for me. The food was delicious and it was great that we could see everything prepared in the open kitchen. The overall ambiance was nice. We did almost have issues finding the restaurant. The service was as expected of a michelin star restaurant. However, my only issue was that when we received the check... our server told us his tip was not included in the 20% that they were already charging us. There are multiple fees that are charged at these type of restaurants that make me feel like they are no longer worth the price for what we get. We came to Masseria for our wedding anniversary and honestly it was just okay for the price. I will say up front, our total bill came out to over $700. The service is what you would expect from a Michelin restaurant. It's fantastic. The food is great, but not $700 mind-blowing great. Our favorites: the focaccia starter and the pasta dish! The gremolata was also refreshing and delicious. The wine list is expansive and impressive, but the waiter did try to upsell us at every turn, which was very annoying. The pricing is not transparent - Tock deposit is not full price, and they never show you the price of what you've committed to at the restaurant until dinner is over. The price is extremely expensive for what you get in terms of food, service, and ambiance. A few bites were very special (prosciutto for example), but most were just fine, and one extremely off putting (plain fishy pasta). The servers were very hard to understand (mumbling) when explaining the dishes. Dinner took 3 hours - there were long stretches where we felt abandoned. The setting is fine, but nothing especially comfortable to reflect being in a higher tier of restaurant. Would not return and would advise others not to come. read more

Wonderful experience at Masseria last night with the four course tasting menu and some excellent bottles from the St. Julien region to enhance our experience. Service was tremendous, as you'd expect from a Michelin star experience. And the food was... unexpected, charming and delicious. We sat in the dining room between the bar & the kitchen, so all the smells and activity from the kitchen are present, and you have a sense what is coming next. Even the amuse bouche was stunning, with a green tea & honey shot served with a wonderful focaccia & tomato/herb quenelle. The pastas each have a unique flavor and presentation that sets Masseria apart, and the seasonal lemon soufflé was simply tremendous. Be prepared for a pricey evening out, as there is an emphasis on add-ons throughout the night. While this has unfortunately become a bit of the norm for American restaurants trying to make the most of their Michelin stars, it can feel pushy and aggressive to those not used to it. read more

Wasn't too crowded on a Saturday night which was perfect bc it wasn't loud like most dc places and the service was mostly okay (they were a bit stingy with offering fresh clean plates). Can't remember how many courses we had, they were okay, but the truffle option was a huge disappointment. Another friend also opted for truffles and said same. The highs were high, and the lows were meh, as in forgettable. Our server was so informative, kind, and attentive. The service, as in the pacing of the dishes and long wait times dampened our dining experience. For starters, getting water at the start of our dining experience was a challenge, took 15 minutes. Was it worth the $1000 we spent on our anniversary din? Sadly, no. What stands out? I loved the vibe, R&B music (at least, that's what they were playing when I was there), customer service, proximity to the open kitchen (from the sala), and six-course meal experience. There were some dishes that changed flavors as you chewed, which was really fun. I highly recommend getting one or two add-ons like the drink pairings to elevate the eating experience or the cannoli truffle mousse combo. The latter was one of the best food my sis and I ate when we went. We were in awe with the whole experience. The only course that could've better compared to the other courses was the chicken/duck/cherry sauce course. Before we left, they gave us a gift bag with two small bottles of olive oil with their restaurant name on it and some chocolates and fruit bites (passion fruit, I think). They were all so cute and was such a nice gesture. Note, there is a parking garage behind the restaurant to the left. Take a right at the intersection past the restaurant (if the restaurant is to your right), then turn left when you get to the lots. You'll see parking garages. We've ordered take-out here twice and I've been impressed, but this Anniversary dinner where hubs made surprise reservations and dining here was oh so divine! Service was impeccable. Every single staff member was not just polite, but kind and showed up as if they actually enjoyed working there. Masseria took extra precautions to not only keep their staff safe, but their customers as well, without feeling like you're in a prison (i.e. masks on when a waitress/waiter approached your table, waiting at your table and having someone call you to the bathroom if it was occupied) Everything looked itty bitty tiny when we got the food and I thought I would be leaving this place hungry, but I certainly did Not! I had just the perfect amount to sustain me to the next dish and there was not a single thing hubs and I did not enjoy. Every single thing shined and dripped of care, effort, and love taken to making each dish. One of the best meals I've had in DC. Service: 4/5 Taste: 5/5 Presentation: 5/5 Overall Experience: 5/5 My group went with the 6-course meal, but as you can see in the pictures, got more than 6 courses. There was a starter ginger shot, bread course, and "pre-desert" that were all included and were nice surprises to our evening. From the start, we were given towelettes to clean our hands. The bathrooms also use towels instead of napkins. The spacing between each course was roughly 15 minutes, but we never felt like we were waiting too long. We opted for an optional foie gras black truffle cannoli - the cheapest of the add-ons, but certainly worth including. Every bite was delicious. The only complaint I have is that our server felt pushy / rehearsed. Continually making recommendations when we tried to make it clear we didn't really want anything on top of what we had ordered. I get thats their job, but for a Michelin star restaurant, I would've preferred a more amicable server, rather than one that just wants to do business. Other than that, our water, plates and utensils were promptly refilled / changed. Masseria is an easy recommendation from me and will surely be coming back to try their 8-course menu. read more

Excellent presentation and service. The wine selection was also great. Food was a totally different story. We upgraded the main course to get a higher end beef cut. DO NOT do that. I will say that we were super appreciative that they compensated us because we did not eat it. Also, we went for the chef's counter experience and that was a mistake- best to not know what is happening back there. The kitchen porter/sous chef (unclear on the role) prepped food and played with her cell phone in between duties without washing her hands for the first 25 minutes we waited and watched. The chef repeatedly wiped sweat without washing his hands for two hours. Four Appetizers presented and only one was worthy of mention. Is this an Italian restaurant????? That is what the website says. Only one dish was remotely "Italian" and it was the worst course. Website says it has a Michelin star....Guessing it is not the same chef that received that accolade. Super disappointed in this extremely overpriced subpar experience. We traveled 5 hours for this and I cannot begin to express how sad I was as a foodie who travels internationally. A friend and I ordered the Masseria a Casa menu and picked up dinner. I always give an extra measure of grace to restaurants with pickup, especially during the pandemic, because there is understandably so much out of their control. That said, I think Masseria did a great job of separating the different parts of the meal into separate containers, which we appreciated. They also included reheating directions, which were so helpful! Here are menu highlights: -I am a huge fan of their house ciabatta, which I could probably sit and eat for hours. -I enjoyed the Fusilli Trapanese dish. The pasta was more than enough for the both of us, and the pesto was a nice complement. -The capra (goat) entree was just OK for me--if I returned, I would order something else, although the Masseria a Casa menu rotates weekly, so there is always something different anyway. The goat did come with farro, which I really enjoyed. It's not the most common grain but had great consistency and flavoring, and the tomatoes on the side were bursting with flavor. One day in the distant future when the pandemic is handled, I would return here in person. read more

A great Michelin Star restaurant experience that dabbles with seafood. From the initial greeting to departure the service was impeccable. I enjoyed seeing the variety of personnel introducing and explaining the dishes. Being able to watch the chefs prepare the dishes was also a fantastic experience so I highly recommend this option! Had a truly memorable and delicious dinner at Masseria in DC tonight! They truly deserve their michelin star and fantastic reputation! For starters the place is gorgeous with a comfortable yet upscale and modern elegance. They had 90s hip hop/rap playing softly in the background which we loved! The patio was comfortable and sufficiently spread put for proper social distancing. The inside, outside and bathrooms were clean and gorgeous. The staff and our server were all so warm and friendly. They made us feel comfortable and were top notch in customer service from taking care of any dietary restrictions to making sure we had drinks flowing all night. The 6 course La Cucina Tasting menu was fabulous! The foccacia, tomato butter, Carne cruda, Scallop Crudo, Ravioli, and Ribeye were some of our favorite dishes of the night!! The desserts were heavenly with a good balance of rich and decadent and sweet. Yes the cost is a bit high but expected and worth it for this level of quality and taste. The plating was spot on and really highlighted each dish perfectly. We were celebrating birthdays and the added touch of writing happy birthday and putting a candle on our dessert plate was such a nice surprise!! We really loved and enjoyed our experience, and our first at a michelin star restaurant. We have enjoyed a lot of fantastic chef tasting menus in Northern Virginia but this was on a whole other level. Updating my review since it's been a while and I visited recently. Stopped in for the tasting menu at the chefs counter. Pretty average food, and at this price point it's just not for me - there are many other one stars in dc with more memorable food and service, and most for less $. Let's start with service - almost immediately we knew it wouldn't be for us, our server started off pushy with cocktails, giving us what felt like one minute to browse the menu before recommending specific one and asking if we'd like to order them..while I appreciate recommendations, I can read the menu and make a decision on my own thanks. When my partner said he didn't want a cocktail, the server took his drink menu and that was that - he had picked out a wine he wanted to try but I guess that didn't matter as the guy sped off. He also assured me that I'd be sent a copy of the menu when he saw me taking notes, saying I didn't have to do that and making me feel uncomfortable for doing so (I like taking notes, I realize I don't have to do this during a meal lol) - and still haven't received that menu. Little things like this on top of overall just making us feel like we were a nuisance, over-explaining things with what we felt was a general condescending tone during every interaction as if were new to fine dining - far from it. For the dining experience - some good bites, some average, and others very bad. I can't remember the last time I've sent back almost a full course of a tasting menu - we typically finish everything + add ons, but we really did not care for two of the courses. Cocktail was good. Amuse bouche was fine but not memorable. The bread service was ok with the exception of the savory parm filled bombolini which was delicious. The burrata with oyster and caviar was very nice. Then we move on to some bigger plates - sheeps milk ricotta with vegetables was fine, turbot with heirloom tomatoes had a nice consommé, risotto with truffles was rich and tasty (although doesn't touch the similar dish served at jont), XO pasta is one of their classics although this was like a 2.5 bite portion, ravioli with chanterelles was pretty good. Foienoli is fun. Then we got two the two main entrees - one was a large portion of sweetbreads, served with charred broccolini. The combo of sweetbread flavor + this burnt broccoli with a smoky sauce and broccoli purée destroyed my palette - I couldn't eat more than a couple bites, it was that bad. My partner was drinking water after his bites to get it down. One of the worst courses I've had on any tasting menu to date. Next was a Guinea fowl - had a bunch of components on the plate that were all over the place with no flavors complimenting each other. The bird was pounded thin and pretty dry. The jus needed work, the shio koji was too sweet and did nothing for the plate, the poached plums were a random unwelcome addition. Lacking a clear vision and lots of execution. Next was the palette cleanser, with a candy tuile that was too thick and wouldn't break, and then got stuck in your teeth - not sure who signed off on that one. The final dessert course was a plate of apricot in different forms - cake, puree, brittle, ice cream. This was ok but didn't blow me away. We also opted for a cheese course, ordered and paid for 5 but was given 3 - by that point we didn't want to raise a stink, we just wanted the meal to end. Cheese course is an afterthought, served with slices of bread, a jam and some walnuts, and the three we had weren't anything special. And if that wasn't enough, we saw multiple bugs on the counter during our meal. The first was a decent sized cockroach that ran across the counter and hid under the water bottle. Being that food prep is just on the other side of the counter, this is pretty gross, and again not something I've seen at 50+ other Michelin restaurants. The second was a smaller one that I took care of myself. Sitting at the counter also wasn't particularly enjoyable - the chairs are uncomfortable and the kitchen staff never looked happy to be there (there was good lighting though). The space between courses can be long, so this meal of 8 courses dragged out to 2.5 hours without any pairings. For $700+ I expect a bit higher quality of food, service, and atmosphere. Also, selling masseria branded candles in the bathroom disguised as art is pretty tacky. read more

I don't know what I should say about this place, nothing really stood out for me, except for two super salty dishes (I believe it was the beef tripe and the pasta), the service was SLOWWWWW. I'm talking about Flash (the sloth in Zootopia) kinda SLOWWWWWW. The whole dinner took more than 4 hours. By the time we left, even the garage was closed. First time going to a Michelin star restaurant. This was for my friend's wedding rehearsal dinner. The service was exceptional. We were greeted as we walked in and there were multiple people working the event. The place is so cute and perfect size. We always had drinks in our hands. They were constantly being refilled. I enjoyed watching them bring our foods and place it on the table synchronically. For the cocktails, red wine was really good and they made a delicious mezcal cocktail (had multiple of those! ) As far as the food, I enjoyed my dinner a lot but I would say I have had better food in restaurants that are not Michelin star. Masseria has long been on the list and I was finally able to check it off after this past weekend. I went to celebrate a 35th birthday with 5 other friends and we sat on the heated patio, which was VERY warm and was completely enclosed. Honestly, it was colder in the actual restaurant and bathroom! Pros: - The service was impeccable and the staff was wonderful. - The food was delicious. - The restaurant is beautiful and the ambiance is lovely. - The Sommelier that worked with our table was fantastic and so much fun, plus his recommendations were spot on. Cons: - I agree with the other reviews that talked about not being able to see the tasting menu and yet being offered a HUGE menu with pricey add-ons right off the bat. It was a turn-off for sure. And while I loved every single thing on the add-on menu I didn't go for any of them because the whole meal felt so pricey already and I hadn't even taken a bite of anything! - The portions are extremely small and I understand that it's a tasting menu and everything is 2-3 bites but I will be honest, I grabbed a slice of pizza on the way home (!!!!). I think it's the perfect place for a romantic date night or celebratory dinner with 2-4 people. And I think it would be fun for to really spurge (yes, even more than the tasting was!) and get some add-ons now that I understand the menu and experience better. I will say i ended up paying almost $300 (sorry I fainted and had to pick myself back up) for my portion of the night -- tasting, wine, fees, and tip. read more

I picked this restaurant to celebrate our 10 years wedding anniversary. We sat at Chief counter table. It was entertaining to see the chiefs were cooking. Everyone seems to know what to do. It was far from Hell's Kitchen TV show after all. Everyone at the restaurant greater us nicely. They knew about anniversary. First menu was whole bunch of boiled vegetables and pickled. Second was yellowtail (ceviche type). Third was cod. The inside of fish was a little bit uncooked. I was not sure it was intentional or not. I am Japanese and used to eat raw fish. Fourth was pasta. It got a lot different cheeses but it was not heavy. I love crunchy flake on pasta. It added saltiness. Fifth was truffle and creamy puff. Sixth was steak. I love the sauce to come with. The food is good, but the service is really bad. I had one of my worst experiences ever in a fine dining restaurant, and I will never go back to this place. I wear a hearing aid, and the way they seated us made it difficult for me to hear my partner, so I decided to sit next to them. After that, our server became rude and irritated, giving us disapproving looks and making passive-aggressive gestures. I started to feel uncomfortable, so my partner spoke with the manager, but she didn't try to resolve the issue. Instead, she was defensive and supported her team without addressing our concerns. On top of that, they didn't explain how the menu worked, which made it more complicated than it should have been, and I ended up paying much more than I expected. I did not enjoy it and wished it over asap so badly midway through. We had the tasting menu with wine pairing (also forgettable) at the countertop to face the open kitchen. Sadly, out of the 10 or so courses there were only 2 I barely enjoyed. I threw up afterwards to get rid of the greasiness and spent the rest of the day to recover. Service was just mediocre as 20% service charge is mandatory so they were not trying. Ambiance was fine but with that food quality was suboptimal and the "highlight" was various pork dishes I assure you are 10 times better at any barbecue spot. This review might sound harsh but we paid $1116 for 2 for a truly disappointing experience. We've been to many Michelin starred restaurants throughout the world and feel this was the worst. Came to celebrate our anniversary here and it was certainly an experience. The hostess did confirm guest vaccination status so it's reassuring to see they're enforcing that! I understand restaurants always want to offer more, but given we paid before coming it seemed excessive to ask us multiple times if we'd like to add/upgrade anything to our meal. Otherwise everyone was very attentive to clearing plates/utensils, refilling water, etc. We did the Chefs counter experience because we really wanted the 8 course tasting menu. Sitting by the open kitchen was interesting if you really want to see the work that goes into crafting these beautiful dishes; I personally find it stressful to be seated there but if that's your thing go for it. We also did the wine pairing. Dishes that really stood out for me were the oyster dish, the linguini, and the truffle foie-noli. I would probably say the parsnip dish and the duck were both underwhelming. All of these dishes are beautifully put together and photo/IG worthy. As I walked in; I was surprised by the ambiance. The vibe felt more "abroad" than most any place I've been to in DC. Our group was seated at a table centered in their outdoor patio, which is fully covered by a louvered pergola to let just enough gentle sun light fill the space and floored with lovely large Italian tiles. The staff was formally trained; but very human. Waiters were present & attentive, without being overburdening. The food from the tasting menu was overall fantastic; with my personal highlight being the handmade ravioli. When I cut into it and saw lovely egg yoke pouring out? I knew (and can confirmed) ... the flavor was heavenly. Surprisingly? The only miss was the Foie gras?! This optional upgrade is far too rich & salty, and baffled my duck loving group, skip it. That said, everything else was delicious, and presented handsomely on high end plates (Versace), bowls and unique ceramics. It was a nice touch of luxury and fun to the meal.
