Two of Five Stars, but only for comic relief. I'm a forgiving person. To have enjoyed The Broken Yolk experience, one fraught with staff members yelling near the top of their lungs, a fair amount of Northwest grunge and nearly all of the fundamentals of restaurant stewardship tossed aside, one would have to be, very, very forgiving. So, yes, when it comes to restaurants, I am very forgiving. To be fair, the restaurant was short staffed, so short that they closed an entire section. One of the only two waitresses, who also appeared to be the boss/chief-yeller, made the short-staffed situation known to every table very loudly so that every table heard each desperate apology. I suppose I heard the apology 15 or 20 times in the hour and a half it took to get and, quickly, consume my two pancakes (underdone) and two eggs. Yep, an hour and a half. I timed it. Plus, I got the wrong pancakes. The hour-and-a-half time was unique to me. In what would have been to most other patrons, disquieting, I watched, amidst the running and banging and frantic panic, like sitting in the middle of an overcrowded and lively fish tank, six different tables served before me who were seated after me (for this delay I was given free coffee by my apparently extremely stoned or extremely hung-over or perhaps extremely bemused and equally fascinated waitress). Whichever her condition, she moved slowly, like a happy, oblivious stop-motion cartoon character pasted into a PBS time-lapse film--picture an Eric Cartman cameo in PBS's Journey to Planet Earth. My bemusement at the unfolding food service wreck was not shared by my one-year-old son. Luckily the Broken Yolk has a small children's play area and though Henry is not always smitten with adults' conceptions of playable environs, he loved the Broken Yolk's take and played happily the entire time. Otherwise, and I'd have to have left, which I considered doing a few times. The food... It looked pretty good at other tables and I would return to the restaurant again to give it a try but on this day my eggs were Cold On Arrival (C.O.A.) and my pancakes were both blueberry--not what i ordered and a buck extra--and pasty white, underdone, almost wet dough. Probably they deserve zero stars for this performance. But I'm forgiving. And like I mentioned, I would go back. We all have bad days. Ok- so, I do come to broken yolk fairly often when wanting breakfast. Though that has a lot to do with the fact that it's literally the only true breakfast joint in Corvallis that's decent. The wait staff is pretty great. Pretty much always get the same lady who gives the vibe she's been doing this a while. She's attentive, not overbearing. Your coffee won't get cold! Though there's always this one woman seating people who isn't someone I'd describe as pleasant. Maybe that's part of the job when there are always so very many people waiting for a seat- being unapproachable probably helps keep people from asking after their tables over and over. On that note- it seems to be too often that there are a LOT of people waiting for a seat while the back end of the restaurant is shut down. So there's like ten more tables going unused and you have to wait up to 30 minutes to sit down. The food is pretty good most of the time. I have two or three things that I always order, but honestly the times I've strayed from those I haven't been impressed. For instance the "locomoco" is totally gross. The huevos rancheros are good usually but the last time somehow they didn't taste the same and I was disappointed. I'd recommend the Athens skillet- you can't go wrong if there's artichoke hearts involved! Also their bloody mary's are pretty good! I have heard tell that the French toast is good. I don't personally go for the sweet breakfast items but I think that's what a lot of people enjoy. I once ordered a gluten free cinnamon roll.. it came out scalding hot from the microwave. So clearly overcooked I'm surprised they even served it to us. The frosting had bubbled and hardened to the bowl it was in and was so dry and disgusting I didn't even bother eating it. The seating is in SERIOUS need of re-upholstery. The seats sink under you and you can feel the wires in them. You feel like you're sure to be the last straw that breaks the thing and fall through! While they're at it might as well do something about the tabletops, which are so worn out and peeling off that they can't look clean even though you know they've been wiped down. I meant to leave a nicer review than this- but as I go I'm realizing my feelings about this place have been degrading over time. I'll go with three stars just because I've been here enough times that I'd feel like a hypocrite if I went lower- but to be honest after my last visit I'm pretty over it. read more

There is nothing better for breakfast than a large amount of tasty, moderately greasy food. Especially when you have a mild headache from 'excessive celebration' from the night before. Broken Yolk nailed it the first time. Notebook-sized plates of pancakes, hashbrowns, toast, eggs, biscuits/gravy -- all adjacent to one-another for appropriate co-mingling of tasty goodness? Check. Check. and Check! Good quality grub at a reasonable price. I would not hesitate to return. But beware -- when this place gets busy the wait for a table can be long (30+ minutes) and the wait staff gets overwhelmed with correspondingly slow service. On the plus side our server was friendly and accomodating at all times, and our coffee and water were always filled. One star docked for generic bread with the wheat toast -- with associated 'painted on' butter. And one star docked for the setup: waiting area isn't separate from the tables, and on a cold day folks will hold the door open exposing those who are trying to dine to a brutal draft. read more

Breakfast place where my step daughter lives. She made the suggestion and took a chance. Big ole burly woman took our name all hot and sweaty and decided to yell and point and some young girl with tattoo's took us to are table. I thought we didn't have to wait very long, so don't gripe. Now to the breakfast food, I thought the portions were big and very tasty. I say go and don't cook at home and enjoy the college students and especially the girls, west coast dressed, no bras. I was hoping it was as good as the diner it looked to be but wasn't impressed. We sat at the bar and had a waitress that just was too busy for us. All of her other tables were far away so we were ignored for the most part. A quick diner type breakfast took over an hour and a half and we didn't have to wait for a table. Broken Yolk was THE place to be on a Saturday morning in Corvallis at 10 AM. Line out the door, super casual, with a sign-up yourself waiting list. My stomach was rumbling and grumbling like none other, which I'm sure the hostess must have heard because shortly after we got a table - YES! The coffee came quick and the server was super sweet, she reminded me of a kindergarten teacher, so polite and checked in multiple times throughout the meal, always smiling. Sometimes service, especially during a rush, is so sub-par, that this waitress really stood out and went and beyond to just be cordial and friendly. Always a good start to your morning. I ordered the hobo hash which was GINORMOUS! Seriously huge...almost too huge. I was full before even hitting the half-way mark on my plate. Which the food tasted good, it was a bit heavy...I was so full, I don't think I ate anything until like 7 PM later that night. My fiance ordered a scramble. The meal was filling, not anything extraordinary. Ultimately it satiated our hungry rumbling tummies enough to get on with our day. This place is not your gourmet establishment, but if come hungry and they'll fill you up with comfort food. Overall, I'd give a 5 for service, a 3 for food...but I think food wins! read more

It's very kid friendly with a little play area in the front. The service was quick and our waitress was very attentive. The 2 stars is because of the food. I had the Eggs Benny and my eggs weren't runny. The hash browns were almost a stale crunchy and greasy. My fiancé had the Country Fried Steak. He said it was good. Nothing to write home about. It was better than a Denny's or Shari's. Grandmas Strawberry Jam on an English muffin is quite good though! Pretty good, but crowded and busy. I ordered the half order of biscuits and gravy and I'm glad I didn't get the whole order because I was stuffed. Very good though! I never leave negative reviews because I know how damaging they can be to a business. My experience at this restaurant was so horrendous that I absolutely have no other choice than to let others know about it! My elderly Mom and I met there for breakfast and were able to get a table after about a 5 minute wait. Mom ordered just a cinnamon roll and I ordered the Hobo Hash with egg beaters and sourdough toast. Waitress came back a few minutes later and said they were out of the egg beaters and would egg whites be ok. Fine! Brought our meals but mine was missing the toast. Was several more minutes before I could get her attention to ask for my toast. Just as we finished our meals, the check was dropped off. We paid and were wrapping up our conversation when the Manager approached us and said that we had been finished for over an hour and that we needed to be "mindful and respectful of her line". I smiled and said but we haven't even been in the building an hour and we just got the check? She picked up receipt and reviewed it and repeated again loudly that we needed to free up that table as we had been there too long. Keep in mind at that point it was just 45 minutes since we entered the building. She stormed off and other tables of folks were all watching this I'm sure wondering what in the world our quiet little table had done to be asked to leave. Embarrassing to say the least. I left because I didn't want to say anything in the heat of the moment that I might regret. My Mom stayed and asked to speak with the manager. Same lady who had told us to leave came out. Refused to apologize or change her attitude or admit that she made a mistake. We have never been treated so poorly at any restaurant anywhere! This is my favorite breakfast place in Corvallis. I recommend this place to everyone. A little tip: Go with only 2 or 3 of you so you can squeeze in without waiting more than 20 minutes. It's very busy so I think that speaks for itself. If you bring your kids it does have a "kids club" play area to keep them occupied. They have a great menu. It's fitting for everyone! I would recommend eating off of their specialty menu. It's a great way to try something new with a mix of regular morning favorites. Make sure to order something with toast so you can try their "Grandma's homemade strawberry jam". I'm not a fan of toast or jam, but this was excellent. I'm really big on service, which is why I gave them a 4 star. They didn't ask if we wanted anything to drink they just brought us water and asked if we were ready to order. Since we didn't order right away she kind of forgot about us and it took about 15 minutes and 5 looks later to get her to come over and take our order. It is understandable though since they are so busy. They have good prices and great portions. My boyfriend and I both ended up taking half of our meal home. I ordered the cajun skillet, and it was great! The potatoes are a new favorite of mine. It's very clean and has fun artwork. It's a great breakfast atmosphere. I love this place! My fiance and I just moved to Corvallis, and we go here every Sunday for breakfast. The food is so hearty and perfect. My favorite is the Pigs in a Blanket..three sausages wrapped in three individual pancakes. Nom nom nom. The man always gets a different scramble, and he's always full and happy after it. They come in a bowl of goodies and always have home fries on top. Try their Broken Mocha...half coffee, half mocha, and plenty of whipped cream :) They are very busy on the weekend, so the earlier the better. We normally wait around 15 minutes for a table. My family and I came to to the Broken Yoke after a weekend family function. We were staying at a local hotel, and there are only so many breakfast buffets you can eat before you feel like you need something a bit more substantial. First, here were the things that I liked about the experience: The place was really kid friendly, which was a good thing for my one-year-old nieces. I also liked the variety of food options on the brunch menu. It was hard to decide what to go for! I ended up having the Northern Veggie Skillet, and that was a really satisfying option. The way they do their potatoes is great. The trouble with the place, and the reason for the three-star review was that not everyone in my family loved their meals. The reviews here on yelp must have had an effect on the people down at Broken Yolk, because the service we received was both attentive and genuine. After the series of failures at Sunnyside Up yesterday, we'd asked around for another breakfast place and so, going into this, I'd been nearly crossing my fingers that we'd not have a repeat experience. To that end, I figured that the quickest way to see what Broken Yolk had to offer would be for me to order poached eggs (trouble to amateurish cooks) alongside a dish that is either a point of pride or a dump dish (ie. the kitchen dumps it out w/o a thought): Chicken-fried Steak. My wife ordered an enticing special, The Athens, to round out our breakfast. Moments after we'd been sat, the waitress (only one on shift, no less) arrived with our freshly brewed coffee, and we were immediately pleased with the flavor, the aroma and overall quality of this drip-brew. Its not very often that a bottomless cup is worth refilling and this was certainly the exception: strong but not bitter, and full of complexity. She also seemed to handle each of the seven tables aside from ours with equal energy and understanding of their needs. Our meals were humbly but well-plated, and of healthy portions for the price (no bloated, middle-America feel here). Surprisingly enough, my Chicken-fried Steak, a dish traditionally found at truck-stops and 24hr greasy spoons, was hand-breaded and herbed to perfection. It went so very well with the skilled production of the two poached eggs, so pretty they were photogenic, and tasty too! Holly's special was also quite pleasant, being well-balanced and aromatic. We had fun trying to keep the other's fork from sneaking into our own dish.... In summary, we're very pleased to have had the good fortune to come across a decent breakfast place that shies away from hollow-but-fashionable trends or politically-driven menu decisions. The folks at Broken Yolk see no fault in sticking to the basics and excelling at them, and we are happy to agree. We will certainly be back! read more

Sometimes there is a bit of a wait due to popularity, but overall this breakfast joint is one of the best in town. They make the eggs exactly how you ask every time. The service has gotten much better. A year ago we had a rude waitress, but now they are all friendly and willing to help with anything you need. Warm environment. Cute play area for kids.
