(Again, this place is not affiliated with San Diego's Broken Yolk Cafe, shown on Man v. Food) I popped in for a quick takeout order, seeking a good breakfast. One smiling, enthusiastic female server greeted me, almost like I was the coolest family member on the planet. I wanted to look around to make sure she was actually talking to me and not some much cooler person... The Greek omelet ($9.50) was on my agenda this time. Three or four eggs, packed with artichoke hearts, Kalamata olives, capers, roasted red peppers, garlic, feta cheese, and spinach. I got home fries and wheat toast. The omelet was pretty good, although I question whether it really was 3-4 eggs. Such a cute little guy, I tell ya. Perfect for even a semi-full panda to just completely destroy. Coulda eaten a couple more of those rather easily if I had an empty stomach. The brininess of the artichoke hearts and olives came through. The feta added a bunch of salty flare. But the home fries looked like some prepackaged deal, so uniformly brown and cubed. Whatever happened to large real potato chunks, browned up on the flattop? All those blackened or really toasty spots on the exterior, with the pillowy soft insides? What I received seriously should be reserved, at best, to school cafeterias. It's pretty much a dang foodie violation to me. I just hope that's also not the case with the hash browns.... The wheat bread was toasted and buttered. Yet, in the styrofoam container (yup, styrofoam), I'm sure the heat emanating from the omelet caused the toast to lose that toasty crunch. I'll take the blame there. I should have asked for some of that Grandma's homemade jam. People seem to rave about it to no end. Bad panda...no biscuit! People with huge appetites should take a gander at "The Broken Yolk" omelet, which has eight eggs, three types of cheeses, and three types of meat. Yup, bacon is in there. It should stuff many individuals and bring you that much closer to a heart attack. Brilliant! I should have been tipped off by the fact that there was no breakfast place in Corvallis higher than 3.5 stars...but, it was a Saturday and we decided to stop at BY for breakfast before cruising through the farmer's market. I would give 2.5 stars if I could, but I was so less than impressed that I'm not going to upgrade to 3. First, the positives: ~Wait time of about 3 minutes at 10am on a Saturday. We did just beat a huge rush though and noticed people standing for 10+ minutes, still not bad though. ~They have a nice little kids play fort right in the dining room, so you can ship the kids off to play while you enjoy your coffee and still keep an eye on them. God help the people sitting next to that thing though when some noisy kids are around...yikes. We glanced over the menu with it's nice selection of vegetarian and meat-infused breakfast items. They have some great looking specials, scrambles, hashes, etc to choose from along with the breakfast staples. Now, here's a little side note: I will ALWAYS judge a breakfast place on one of two dishes. The biscuits and gravy and/or the chicken fried steak. Now, negative time: So when our waiter arrived to take our order I asked him "Is the CFS homemade?" to which he replied "No, it comes out of a bag." Strike one. "How about the biscuits? Made in house?" "No, we don't make those here." Strike two. I mean really?!? You're a BREAKFAST PLACE! Are you just cracking eggs??? Maybe those come out of a jug, who knows? So I went with the CFS with the home fries that I've seen raved about on Yelp. The plate shows up,and they're fucking FROZEN potatoes. THOSE AREN'T HOME FRIES!!! Strike three! This town is obviously dying for an actual home style breakfast cafe! The strawberry jam was the best part of the breakfast, and that's pretty sad. Good coffee as well, but had to ask our waiter for refills after he passed our empty cups about 4 times. So, bottom line: Sysco food with sub par service. I will return however and try some of the specials which looked tempting, but now that I know they'll be served over frozen bagged potatoes I'm less than enthusiastic about it. read more

I've eaten at broken yolk probably a half dozen times or so since they opened. The decor is great- someone knew what they were doing when they built out the restaurant- has a good vibe. As far as the food goes, it's good. Pretty consistent and nice big omelets :) Having been there a half dozen times or so, the food is really what keeps me coming back periodically when I'm interested in going out to breakfast and I'm downtown. If I were in north town, I'd opt for Sam's Station. The big turnoff is the service. I've not had any rude experience(although some might think them rude), simply awkward ones. For example, a group walked through the door, and the waitress was gesturing and talking at them across two tables, with other patrons staring in disbelief, instead of approaching them and politely addressing them in close quarters. Another customer walked in and approached the bar area to get a mocha to go, and stood for a good ten minutes while wait staff walked around him, never asking if they could help him. When someone finally approached him, he politely said no thank you and that he changed his mind. Awkward. I should also point out that it was not THAT busy. Maybe 65% capacity. Then, a few minutes later, a hoard of sorority girls came in for breakfast. There weren't any long tables left, so the waitress went over to another couple that was sitting at a four top and asked them to move so they could push together a couple nearby four-tops for the girl group. Just plain weird. Do they realize this is poor form for restaurant service? If I were buying a 2.99 grand slam breakfast, I'd maybe look past the weirdo service, but my omelet and coffee with a tip ran over 12 bucks. That deserves a little bit more. So, 4 stars for the tasty omelets, the good coffee and the nifty squeeze bottles of strawberry jam. 2 stars for the service. read more

"Sam's Station?" naahh.... "Shari's??" Oh hell no... "Broken Yolk??" hell to the yes! Breakfast food without the fast food/chain taste. Decent/semi overpriced dishes that meet the standards of having a hearty breakfast. I miss this place. I miss the atmosphere. I miss bumping into friends here. And I miss coming here with my sister. Every time my sister came down to visit from Portland she and I would make it a ritual to come here and eat. After a couple impatient times at Sam's Station this has become our spot to stuff our stomachs in the mid-morning. I also brought my man here too and his review is below. A different environment for sure than what you can find in SF unless someone can direct me to one place that is the place to go for breakfast =P I had no problem with waiting for a table because I was usually with one other person so don't let big crowds outside fool you. Most likely, they are the big families/groups that want in. My one huge pet peeve is the un-supervised kids that are in the play area. Okay yea you can drop your kid off there but pleeeeeaseeeee keep an eye on them. And if you can't get them to shut up, get them out of there for the sanity of the rest of patrons... Poor service, good food. I attribute this to the low-cost student labor they use. These kids are just learning how to work, but the patrons suffer. Came here on a football game day - early - trying to avoid the crowd. We did just avoid the crowd, but still had a 15 minute wait. They had not figured to open all the tables of the restaurant, even though this happens every weekend. Basic breakfast fare is not worth the effort. There is nothing special here. read more

Party of 8 in Mother's Day for brunch! Everything was very good. I had the Philly cheese steak skillet. It was very tasty and it filled me up. I haven't written a review for this place yet?!? I must've just imagined writing one for so long I thought I actually did. This is by far my favorite place to get breakfast. They have a great classic breakfast menu at pretty decent prices. The portions are huge but the service is lacking. This is is also soooo inconsistent. I order the cisco kid omelette every time I come here. The first time it was great, no complaints. The second time it was HUGE but was missing the avocado. The third time it was the smallest I'd ever seen it. WTF? Do they have a different chef every day? Its still really good though and filled with fresh ingredients. This place doesn't look that good for lunch though but maybe thats just because I'm more of a breakfast person. Try not to get seated in the back. Their chairs look like left overs from a convention that was held in the Holiday Inn or something. Half the time the chairs are on top of the tables which looks really tacky. Why can't they just leave them down? I really like how bright and sunny this place is otherwise. I've never ordered their coffee but I always see it served in a different mug each time which I think is really cute and homey. I've been going here for years. Well recently the name was changed, but it's still the same place. I always have a great time when I'm there. Yes service may take a bit of time, it gets soooo busy. People pile up. The staff has a good time and takes care of business. I used to be in the service industry so I realize that we as customers don't always see what's going on behind the scenes. The Broken Yolk has the best breakfast-food in town. The skillets, omelets, pancakes, strawberry jam and coffee are especially tasty. If you've never been here before then you should go. However, it's a perfect candidate for one of those "Hell's Kitchen"-type shows: The service has gotten slightly better since they opened, but it's still not very good (or maybe I've learned to expect the odd service). The staff who have been here the longest would benefit the most from a restaurant-etiquette book -- the service is usually decent when my waiter is a new hire. I've eaten at the Broken Yolk a couple dozen times since they opened a few years ago. This place would be packed every day if the service were good; but, it's not. I like the food a lot, though, so here is some advice: 1. Stop saying "there's no rush" or "take your time" when you bring the check. You say it every time, so clearly this is a conscious choice and part of the training. It comes across as insincere. Just say "thank you." Or nothing. 2. Ask before refilling my coffee. Yes, it's delicious, but I've just perfected my sugar-to-coffee ratio, and I only want to drink a cup anyway. 3. The "entry experience" is one of the worst in town. When I enter by myself, I've stopped waiting to be noticed and I usually seat myself. This has gotten slightly better over the years, but it's still below average. 4. It's not uncommon to be seated at a dirty table. 5. So many of the little things are wrong, I don't know how helpful it would be to continue. Perhaps this is the "style" of the restaurant, but everything comes across as disorganized. The ebb and flow of greetings, service, observing patrons, and busing tables is just not there. I don't know if this is a layout issue or people issue. Yes, you get busy at times, but patrons understand that, and some of the worst service I've gotten was when business was slow. 6. Figure out a better way to "close" the back area besides putting chairs on top of the tables in the middle of the day. (One idea: Don't close it.) 7. The word that best describes the service is "unaware." Maybe visit some other places in town, read a few books, or take a class, and think about it? I'll keep coming back for the food. But, when Corvallis gets an excellent breakfast place downtown, the Broken Yolk will fade if they don't make considerable changes. read more

The waitresses at this establishment blow me away each time I visit - and not in a positive way. Their behavior varies from visit to visit - I've been there maybe 7 times over the last couple years. One of those visits was blissfully uneventful - I managed to enter, order, be served, eat, pay and leave without incident. That's not the norm in my experience though. The general tone from the wait staff seems to be exasperation. Each visit save the one uneventful one left me feeling like a child under the supervision of a teenage babysitter who would much rather be elsewhere and was doing the bare minimum possible to get paid. I've been served grossly out of order - with people entering 10 minutes after me placing their orders first and being gone before I've started to eat. During those waits I've sat without so much as a cup of coffee - which would have gone a long way to quelling my rage. In nearly every visit I've had the food kinda flung/slid onto the table with the waitress already turned in the opposite direction - as though she'd really preferred to have thrown it but settled for a passive-aggressive fling instead. English muffins seem to come either dry or drenched in 'butter' - toasted if you're lucky. This is, not surprisingly, a waitress duty. Given the wait staff's general demeanor and taking, as it does, roughly one minute and four whole steps to produce a butter-moistened and toasted english muffin, I suppose this should come as no surprise. Should you like to take issue with any of these things you're just out of luck, you won't see that waitress again until she comes back by to give a sh**-eating grin while delivering the check. Oh, and if you're seriously lucky, refill that mug you waited forever to get, drained and subsequently have been waving at her in an increasingly less subtle manner. This doesn't scratch the surface. The last two times I've been there I've actually started letters to the owner, whom I seriously hope is ignorant rather than tolerant or encouraging of this type of behavior. The letters have both been scrapped on my way out the door, my oath to never return rendering them pointless. I can't emphasize enough - the service is TERRIBLE, TERRIBLE, TERRIBLE. That mug-waving comment? Yeah - it's true. And the waitress at the time? Standing at the counter with her hands on her HIPS, spaced-out, staring *past* me out into the street. INFURIATING. So does the food make up for the service? Well, not many breakfasts could, provided you've got any dignity. Judging by the prices and decor, they're shooting for something a step up from Tommy's (recommended greasy spoon) and Sharon's (formerly-recommended greasy spoon). In comparison to these places I'd say The Broken Yolk does serve a tastier plate in most cases, mostly due to better ingredients. Judging by taste, they don't appear to buy the cheapest cheese, etc (a route your typical greasy spoon would take). They also include green ingredients like avacado, which would send Sharon's redneck clientele scurrying for the door. The much-vaunted jam in the ketchup bottle is nothing to write home about, but a step up diner-staple 'apple butter' packets. The cooks seem to do a competent job. That their honest effort is ultimately soiled by the behavior of the indifferent servers earns them my sympathy. A typical visit finds me sitting, clutching my empty coffee mug, watching the assault on human dignity that is the Yolk's wait staff, wondering whether the cooks know what happens out front and then wondering whether it might be best for them to just remain ignorant. So why do you see lines for this place on Saturday & Sunday mornings? I'd like to say it puzzles me, but I'm pretty sure it's just this town's ample supply of self-satisfied, affluenzic hipsters, attracted to the IKEA-like basic colors, happy to accept indignity and confident that indifference is a sure sign of quality. Well, in this case, it's not. What it IS is an episode of Gordon Ramsay's Kitchen Nightmares waiting to happen (witness my last visit, weekday midmorning, when cook threw a minor tantrum and unceremoniously closed up shop). read more

What a great local gem of a breakfast place. Diner food with a homemade touch. We had a skillet, french toast, eggs and an omelet. They were all great, carefully made and the order was right the first time. Service was prompt and friendly. The French Toast was really good. the omelet was fluffy and perfect, melted cheese goodness in the middle. I did not care for the home fries, they were deep fried like french fries. The hash browns were good, shredded and crispy chewy off the griddle. We came on a weekday morning early, and it was half full. I can see why they are packed on weekends. Prices are average to above average for breakfast. Its not big city $$, and the plates are pretty big. I took the trek south to visit a great friend. I had originally wanted to go to Tommy's for breaking of the fast but he insisted that I try the breakfast here. We were greeted by a very nice woman in really pretty glasses. She was funny and had a great attitude. Our waitress followed shortly was unable to make a choice between 2 items and she gave me her recommendation. I am happy that I got the Huevos Rancheros. DELICIOUS!! Pretty good food! We stopped by here while waiting for a pet to be examined at the OSU vet hospital. We hadn't had breakfast or lunch by 2pm, so we stopped here for brunch. Reviews are mixed, which was our experience as well. Nachos: Outstanding. Good balance of cheese, beans and other topic, with surprisingly succulent, flavorful steak bites. Pineapple teriyaki bowl with crispy chicken: Good freshly fried chicken and pieces of fresh pineapple. The teriyaki sauce was underwhelming though, as was the rice which was slightly overcooked and tasted watery. HUGE bowl though, with about twice as much rice as I expected. Chicken strips and fries: Fries seemed a little more starchy than normal, but my husband thought they were good. This came with the same freshly fried chicken strip, which were tender and flavorful. Service was fine, polite, maybe a little bit awkward but quick. Not sure if I'd go back here since I go to Corvallis so rarely and would probably rather go somewhere else, but if I lived in Corvallis I'd go back and try more of their food! read more

This is the only breakfast restaurant in Corvallis to have decent Eggs Benedict, and their Denver omelette is also quite good. The strawberry jam is amazing... I order a side of toast just so I have an excuse to eat the jam. But service is inconsistent at best, very often unfriendly. So here is the deal with broken yolk. The food is solid. It's always pretty good. The Strawberry jam is actually just strawberry syrup, but it still delicious. There is also a lot to choose from. What I can't stand about this place if the overwhelming hipster feel. I get it, it's a hipster place, but it can be overwhelming for some families. A good local breakfast spot in Corvallis that I really want to come back again for. Keep in mind that you may have to wait on the weekend but, it will be worth it. I had the Slamwhich which is just French Toast bread breakfast sandwich which was really filling. However the stars of the place are the crunchy home fries and house jam which I highly recommend getting an extra side of toast for. The service is nice and speedy with good prices. To the Managment of the Broken Yolk: There is a lot of wasted space happening here, and the waiting situation is frankly very rude to your customers. Theres no reason you cannot have waiting area, and your food is not so amazing that you should think, "who cares, let them mash into each other uncomfortably and stand out in the rain for it". There are always tables in the back not being used, a huge area where there is NOTHING, a couple of sprawled out tables, and then a bunch of people crammed together at the door, waiting for a seat while one waitress leisurely barely does her job. So, please, come in and wait for a table, so you can see how we feel, and then come up with a plan to fix it. Until then, I will be recommending other establishments. Zero stars. read more

As others have stated, there aren't many breakfast places in Corvallis. This one was rated 3 stars, and that seems to be about right. The food is prepared well, but the food sources...well, the one thing that struck me odd was the "home fries", which are basically frozed bagged potato cubes. Granted, they cooked them well, but these were from a bag, and you could tell. I have had the eggs over easy and scrambled here, and both were done well. The ham seemed pretty decent, and the hobo hash was fine. However, nothing really stood out, and I would owe it more to the food source rather than the cooks ability. If the owner/chef got some fresh local sources for all of their foods, the execution could lead to some really great stuff. Out of the few times that I have been there, the service has been erratic. I think that is going to be a bit normal for any morning establishment in Corvallis. However, everyone there at every time I have been there has been super friendly, albeit sometimes a bit flakey. Food here is decently priced for its giant portions. I almost always get the Spanish Omelets here. Every time I try something new, I'm disappointed and go back to the Spanish Omelet. The order came with a side of homefries and bread (I chose English muffins). Their jam is in squeeze bottles on every table - my friends love the strawberry jam. I just think it's overly sweet and omit the jam. Homefries are the best here - seasoned well, crispy, and hot. The Spanish Omelet is giant - I only ate 1/4 of it because I was going to the gym later, but I split the rest of it into 3 more meals. Service is friendly, but it took us a long time for us to get our check. It was pretty busy for a Tuesday morning, so maybe they were understaffed. read more

I'm only giving this place 2 stars because of its convenient location and because 1 star just seems mean. Coffee is flavorless and all but invisible. My cup sat cold, empty and dry for 13 minutes. My "server" only appeared after I asked 3 different people if I could order. None made any effort to track her down or to help me. I did see my server (from a distance) help herself to a cup of ice and grab a Coke. Well, good for her. Helllloooooooo??? The food was inedible. When the highlight is the English muffin... there's problems on the line. Add to this watching the wit staff stand in the kitchen and eat with their hands... it's safe to say I won't be back. Drove from Portland to Corvallis just to come here and to visit my sisters' alma mater (go beavs!). We got to the restaurant around 9am, if you have trouble finding street parking, there's a free lot in the back of the building. First off, I found it pretty rude that a party who came in after us was seated first after we clearly signed in before them. Not only that, they sat them on a 4-top when they were only a party of 2 and we were a party of 4! It didn't phase the rest of the staff who was standing around behind the counter talking while a couple of them were bussing tables. I ordered a caramel apple cider mimosa but it was too sugary, I really don't like drinks rimmed with sugar, I should've asked. My boyfriend and I split the Hobo Hash and it was delicious, I definitely recommend, but be aware they charge an extra $2 if you want to share an entree. read more

My opinion is that you avoid this place. It has given me some of the least pleasant breakfast experiences in town, mainly due to the (pardon me) boneheaded wait staff and overworked kitchen. If you go there on a weekend morning, forget it. The ambiance will be loud, your service inattentive, and the wait staff looking as if they have just been chased for 20 miles by a pack of rabid weasels. Not only is the service terrible, but the food is mediocre as well, not much better than Dennys, and on several occasions I have encountered overcooked eggs (a game-changer in my estimation). Breakfast should be a no-brainer. Just slap some gunk on a plate, no real cooking skill required. Additionally, they are not big on special requests. I asked for bacon that was not particularly crispy, and they were unable to accomodate me. Also, their hash browns come out in rectangles, which bugs the living bejesus out of me. I ate here with my kids last Saturday and received great service from start to finish! I can tell the hostess and the servers all work together. Three people came to check on us throughout our breakfast and our server was incredibly attentive and friendly. He was interactive with my kids and was sweet about it when my daughter spilled her water on the floor. He didn't make me feel bad or make a big deal about it. We were very well taken care of! I didn't care for the dish that I got but I will be back to try something different. The ONLY thing i could say that is negative is $3 for a side of gravy is a bit crazy.
