She has lived in or around my neighborhood for decades and I liked that her shop was just up the street. Her crew was very respectful, professional, always on time and willing to answer any (and all!) questions. It was a long project and there were usually two people in our house for 6 weeks. Like I said - it was a full gut to the studs and then built back out. The project was completed on time and the changes to quote/contract were only due to requests and changes we made. There were never any surprises. They laid down floor coverings every morning to protect the hallway, front entry and bedroom and then cleaned up every day when they left. They did our master bathroom first. They ripped out a 40+year old tub/shower combo insert, toilet, vanity, mirror, popcorn ceiling, etc. They built a custom shower floor, moved the drain and installed new plumbing. They tiled the floor, the walk-in shower and a full wall of tile behind the toilet and vanity. The end result was beautiful and the work was fantastic. There will always be questions and some touch up on a project this size but they were always quick to fix anything that I noticed seemed "off" to me and even came back on a Saturday to check on a non-emergency item that they knew we were anxious to have completed. They did the guest bathroom after the master was complete. Same thing - ripped out an old tub/shower insert, removed everything down to the studs, removed popcorn, etc. They then installed a brand new tub, toilet, plumbing, vanity, mirror, and added some electrical. They tiled the floor and around the shower, build a custom shelf at one end of the tub, installed a light tube (a great way to bring natural light into a dark bathroom/hallway!) and installed the vanity, mirror and lights. Joy and her team were a pleasure to work with and very helpful when I had questions about some final decisions I had to make. They offered suggestions when I asked. We purchased our kitchen during IKEA kitchen sales - and realized later it is a pain to find the right crew to do it, as a lot of general contractors out there are either not willing to touch IKEA products or to charge ridiculous amount to read through the manuals. Of course we can go with IKEA partner - but they are kinda on the expensive side and so swapped due to the sales event. I met with Joy and Donna - both are very knowledgeable and decided to work with them. Joy's crew worked hard to stick with the agreed timeline and the quality is beyond expectation. From the very beginning the quote Joy sent over was itemized, clear and precise. They also have a very comprehensive contract to sign with you (I was surprised to see some of the companies dont do that!). Before signing - all the terms and clauses are carefully explained. During the process - her crew is NEVER LATE. Actually they are often early! Martinez led the project and he is very dedicated, detail oriented and patient. He helped answer all my questions (yes it is very important for a remodeling new-bee). Whenever there is a problem he would always make sure to walk me through the options and offer his professional opinion. The office crew is amazing to work with as well - they are very responsive, willing to listen and accommodate. We had the initial idea to put wood flooring down on the 1st floor of the new house with tile in…read morethe kitchen. I kept coming back to stained concrete though. I just liked the look of one solid piece. Finally after much convincing and showing her that the price would be less, my wife went for the idea too. My wife and I went to Modern Crete's showroom and looked over many colors and etchings with Stacy. We discussed doing a Yin Yang symbol in the entryway but ultimately decided against it. But it you wanted one, or anything else, Modern Crete can do it! They can even stain your floor blue! Looked beautiful. Like water! But we came away thinking we'd go for something more on the brownish side of the spectrum. We also learned there are different types of stains, but generally the acid stains work the best. The general consensus was that an overlay would work best of all to cover up our carpet tack holes (many people do leave these and stain different color borders), imperfections and such. Dan, the owner, and his top concrete specialist, Ben, came out personally to trowel on the overlay over 1400 sq ft. That was interesting to watch and a little tricky with the way our house is designed. It's very open, but the kitchen has two openings and the wall forms a sort of island. So two people have to be troweling at one time always keeping their edge of concrete wet. Finally they meet and pull it out the front door. By the end of the day it was dry! These guys are pros and pulled it off. Because of the way the stains react to overlays vs the original concrete, Ben recommended doing color test samples in the area where the stove would eventually sit after the overlay was complete. That's where we chose our final color out of a choice of four. Ben then sprayed the whole floor with the stain. Now my mistake was, after he did this, I brought my wife over to look at it. It's really not complete and doesn't look right until it's sealed. She sorta flipped out. Dan had to come over and try to explain the process again which he patiently did, I tried explaining, she just wasn't getting it. Finally I just begged her to look at it again after it was sealed. So that's the caveat here. Don't look at your floor until it is sealed! So Ben sealed it maybe up to four times in places where the overlay was completely absorbing the sealant. Each time the stain got a deeper and richer look. Oh by the way, there is a glossy seal and a satin seal. We went with glossy, but if you have pets and high traffic you may want satin. And is that seal ever stinky. It fumigated the house of bugs! Don't breathe it lest you be fumigated as well! The whole process took about a week to complete. And now the wife loves it. So does everyone who sees it. It needs to be waxed again and we haven't even moved in yet. That's pretty normal to do every month. And just an FYI, there is a waiting list typically for Modern Crete. We had to get on the schedule and it was about a 3 week wait. Even after we were pencilled in, people were calling wanting our spot! These guys are popular (they even did a certain celebrity's home recently) and well worth it. You don't want just anyone doing your floors! Can't believe I am the first to Yelp about this crew!

We hired an another plumber and found out that when Alan built our restroom, he made the most basic, unforgivable plumbing mistakes that no professional should ever make. * Toilet Disaster: Alan jammed a 3-inch flange onto a 4-inch drain without securing it properly. This meant toilet water leaked underneath for years, creating a breeding ground for mold. * Shower Leak: He didn't even bother to use Teflon tape to seal the shower pipes, causing water to drip inside the walls, fueling even more mold growth. Because of Alan's shoddy work, our entire restroom was infested with mold, which then spread to our garage and living room. Worst of all, my son, who has been using that restroom daily, has been sick for over two years--all because of Alan's negligence. Now, we are paying the price--$30,000 in repairs, a full-scale mold remediation team, and the health of our entire family at risk. DO NOT HIRE ALAN FOR ANYTHING. He is a complete fraud who doesn't care about quality, safety, or your family's well-being. Save yourself the money, stress, and health risks--stay far away from him!

I've owned my home in Austin for 15 years. I've seen every type of contractor you can imagine. I'm…read moreproud to say that I have FINALLY found the best one yet: Sky-Lan. I'm calling them for everything that I need from here on out. Skylur came recommended to me by an electrician I trust. I had just finished paying another contractor 50% of the job when he flat-out disappeared on me and left me with a half-demo'd hall and bath (yep, tale as old as time). Skylur was extremely sympathetic to my situation and came over immediately! He looked at the current gutted bathroom and provided a quote within a couple of days. The quote was extremely fair for such a large amount of detailed work. His quote was less than ABC who wanted more money for far less work (ABC was just going to do patch jobs...but Skylur removed and replaced all drywall so it was perfectly seamless and brand new!) Skylur is patient, professional, and knows exactly what he's talking about and how to best solve a problem. He answers every single call or text right away. The communication is outstanding; fast, clear and always "yes, can do!" which is huge for me. He doesn't push back or say "well...that'll cost more." He just happily gets it done for the price he quoted and sticks by his word. For this project, I needed pocket door installation, major drywall repair, new baseboards, new trim, prime/painting, vanity installation, electric work. It was a very detailed and technical job (and I am admittedly pretty OCD when it comes to my house projects). Skylur made some smart suggestions that would not only get the job done, but look 1000% times better--aka: brand new. Our old hallway and bathroom were dark, crusty (bad caulk jobs over the years) with layers and layers of terrible texture and paint. Look at the photos and you'll see what a difference Sky-Lan made. Our new hallway and bath are bright, clean and about as perfect as I could ask for. Our kids finally have a bathroom that's bright and fun. There was a team of two who worked every day from 8:30am until past 6pm until the job was done. They protected the floor, covered all the walls and worked quickly and quietly. Every evening, Skylur would personally come over to inspect the work and make a plan for the next day. If I had any questions or concerns, Skylur was there to address them. We would walk through the progress for the day and I could just point to things I was thinking about. His answer to every question was "Yep, we can do that" or "Yes, we'll get that taken care of." Every night, the team swept, cleaned up all tools and materials, and removed the old plastic from the walls. Then the next day, they set up new plastic and got right to work, minimizing dust. Drywall/demo can be messy, but they were the neatest, most respectful crew I've seen yet. I even had a few huge ceiling cracks with some water damage in a nearby living room. While they had the materials, Skylur's team fixed those cracks and painted the repaired part of the ceiling and wall at no extra charge. And not once did Skylur say that something would cost extra to do it right. He just did it the right way to begin with. There was never any nickel and diming. Even after I paid in full, Skylur came back over to touch up a few things and install the pocketdoor hardware that I ordered. He also helped plumb the sink for the new vanity when I couldn't quite get it myself. Learn from me: don't hire the "guy with a truck" to save some money (that guy will take the money and run). And don't hire the big ABC guys off the internet who just want to charge the most money for the least work. Hire Sky-Lan for the personal service and attention to every detail on your job. His crew is talented and put a lot of time and effort into the job. The craftsmanship is top-notch. And as we all know, no job is perfect. So if there's something you see that you want done just a little differently, his team will do it with no questions asked. Skylur does not charge you until you say the job is done. No other contractor does that. He's truly one of the greats, and I'm glad I found him. Just wish I knew about him 15 years ago! Skylur and Sky-Lan are my new go-to contractors. Hire them, get the job done quickly and beautifully for a price you're comfortable with--then move on to the next project with Sky-Lan!

It would cost $100 and if we liked the estimate it would go towards the cost. I don't need it and didn't ask for it. I guess that's there way of charging for an "estimate" Melissa also said the owner is a designer. If that's so, his expertise should be part of the process automatically. You know, the cost of doing business. I read in a previous review that their estimate was done contactless with photos sent by the customer. Looks like that's NOT their process any longer. I'm guessing they have enough work and don't need any new stuff??
