Josh is very good at what he does. We hired him to build a large built in bookshelf with drawers and a desktop. We were a little nervous about putting down a deposit months in advance (he was booked so far in advance!), but the end result was fantastic. He was always forthright in communication and reliable. He did what he said and was honest when he had to reschedule something. On top of that, he was always friendly and direct. Josh listened carefully to exactly what we needed, talked out any possible issues we'd have, and accounted for all the outlets and such that would have to brought out through the piece. We also had to re-do the crown moulding around the piece, and he noticed the poor installation of the rest of the moulding in the room, so he agreed to re-do the rest of the moulding, too. He's meticulous and thorough. We got to watch the progress as he built the piece, because he posts pictures on his Twitter account, which is great! The installation went smoothly, and the final piece looks great (as you can see in the picture) - it's exactly what we wanted and discussed. The new moulding also looks great! We moved into a new house on the east side of Austin several months ago. While we'd had our builder install built-in desks and shelves in our study, we found the cost very high (and the quality lacking). Our 14' long living room wall looked very stark with its small TV cabinet and wall-mounted TV set, and we realized we needed something more in proportion with the room. So I looked on Yelp and found Josh Hager...and followed up with his website. I was impressed with the size of the projects he tackled, so figured he might be able to do a good job for us. Josh responded quickly to my first e-mail and came over within a matter of days to give us an estimate. He looked over my drawings and came up fairly quickly with a cost I found reasonable. Josh inspired so much confidence that we asked him that same evening to look at another space (upstairs) that needed a built-in. Once again, the estimate was reasonable. A week or so later, we thought of another project Josh could tackle: our master closet. Again, a reasonable estimate. We gave him deposits for all three projects. Josh is very busy, and with good reason. He does excellent work at reasonable prices, is totally honest and does not inflate the costs of materials. He uses good-quality materials (no MDF, thank heavens!) And Josh makes recommendations that improve on whatever you might have in mind, based on his breadth of experience. It's all about quality at a reasonable price. Josh uses great hinges on cabinet doors; soft close and push-button removable. Further, his estimates for both materials and labor, at least in our case, were spot-on relative to what we ended up paying. We felt it was worth waiting a few months before Josh could get to our project. Our largest projects were installed by Josh and a helper in a couple of days. The paint-grade wood and great workmanship made the wall units look so nice that we were tempted to leave them unpainted. We actually did leave the interiors of the cabinets unpainted...and they look great. Josh was able to connect us with a painting company to do the finish work within a week or so after he completed installation. The end results were phenomenal; the cabinets Josh built totally changed the look and feel of our rooms in a good way. The quality of his work and the scale of the project made the cabinets a focal point in our living room. We are very pleased and won't hesitate to call Josh again if we need any wood work. Lastly, it's now been about 4 years since our cabinets were installed and painted. I've updated my rating to 5 stars due to how well the cabinets have performed for us over the years. We hired him to build a tall book case with drawers and cabinets and a ladder (I will put up a picture). Not only it is beautiful, the whole experience was pleasant. Josh is very reliable (he is there when he says he is going to be and will communicate if otherwise) and I really appreciated how easy it was to communicate with him about the work. We got to see our shelves being built online via Twitpic. He was helpful about ideas for the design (we weren't sure what we wanted). The price was fair for the quality of work and he was accurate as to how much materials would cost us. Josh also set us up with someone else to stain and finish the bookcase (when that is done, I'll post a picture of that, too). When we decided to hire him, there was a bit of a wait (I think it was a couple of months). I assume this is because his work speaks for itself and he has a lot of satisfied customers. We hired josh to build a custom bookcase/entertainment center he did a good job but when he came to install it, he informed me was closing his business at the end of Dec. 2021 (which I have to wonder about since his website is still up). His closing the business might explain the hurry he was in when he came and why he tried to pass off two of the 4 doors that were installed were hinged on the wrong side (I corrected them). The Unit was unpainted, which he told us at the initial estimate we would have to hire someone else to paint it and he would deliver it "paint ready". Josh recommended a friend by the name of Anthony who had a business called Top notch Painting and explained how good of work he did. After Josh left, I noticed the far side of the cabinet had a section of the outer veneer missing. I contacted his friend Anthony to give me an estimate on painting it, Josh told me Anthony was expensive, and how much he might charge, funny how close Josh was to what Anthony wanted to paint it. Anthony did paint it and it looks OK, but Anthony did very little prep work, no plugging any open screw holes very little sanding just painted over any rough areas not even blending in the very rough cuts that Josh left splicing two sections of the crown molding together. I called Anthony who said he would come back and fix it, he never showed. I spent the next week sanding and plugging and repainting the areas that Anthony messed up. Josh's work is ok, but I don't think I'll call him to do our closets and certainly not call his partner Anthony to paint anything. read more

I really, really, really wanted things to work out with Josh. My mom used his service (she wrote on of these Yelp reviews!) for a lot of work in her house, and it all turned out gorgeously. It's clear that the work he does is high quality and at a reasonable rate. That being said, Customer service is huge. As is being clear when your medium is email as opposed to phone for communication. To outline my experience--Josh was very communicative via email. We originally set up a time to meet. The morning of, about an hour before our appointment, he emailed to cancel due to a sick kid. In a perfect world, he would have called me to tell me this since it was day of, but I forgave that because his kiddo was sick and it was unexpected. We rescheduled the appointment via email. His most recent response: Good morning Lane. Let's meet Tuesday same time. Thank you, Josh www.triplecrowncarpentry.com Tuesday rolls around at the designated time, and Josh is nowhere to be found. I waited and missed 30 minutes of work before I emailed him and told him that I will no longer be using his services. His response: Um, Lane, I never heard back from my last email stating to meet Tuesday. I can't afford to just drive and assume the client will be there. Sorry it didn't work out. Good luck. J The frustrating thing about this is that I was never told I needed to confirm. In fact, he said "Let's meet" not, "Does this time work for you?". If I could give Josh any pointers (And let me just state that I work in a Customer-service heavy industry and manage a team who's job is to provide great Customer service!), it would be this: -Be as clear as possible with your Customers--if you want a response, ask for a response -If you're not sure on whether you are actually meeting with a Customer, send a quick follow-up email, or call, or text -Remember that your Customers are paying and affording you to live! You're working for them, not the reverse! If you're looking to use Josh, I don't blame you--the guy clearly does phenomenal carpentry. I was looking for a carpenter to do some work on my 1970 3 bedroom / 2 bath duplex so I hopped on Yelp to take a look around. I decided to give Josh a call - and that was a good move! He replaced 2 exterior front doors (A and B side of duplex), all the interior doors, trim, and baseboards on the B side, and other misc. trim in kitchen and other spots that needed fixing. All doors were level, plumb, and solid. (I honestly think he's the kind of guy that couldn't walk away from one if it wasn't done correctly.) The new 4" door trim and chunky 6" baseboards look sweet and modern. Other visiting contractors (dry wall dude, plumber, etc.) have commented on his work. He and his co-workers worked extra hard and were very efficient with their time. Despite the fact that I added on a few extra tasks at the end of the project, he got them done for me on time. He can pick up materials for you if you wish, or you can do it yourself and save a little $. There is always a pang of horror when it comes time to find a contractor to help fulfill a dream I have for a certain project. I can only ever think of horror stories people have told me about experiences they have had. This is one reason I use Yelp. I read what other people say, consider differing opinions then I can make a more informed selection. I read Josh's reviews and at first thought that these were too good to be true. Then setting skepticism aside I reread them and felt encouraged and comfortable calling him for a small kitchen improvement project we so desperately needed. i called him, he cam out a few days later, we talked, he was straight forward and gave me options. I received his bid and was happy with the plan he had outlined. Unfortunately some other expenses reared their ugly heads and I had to postpone the job. About a month later I emailed Josh and asked if we could pick up where we left off. He came out again just to reiterate the plan to make sure we were seeing the same end result. Triple Crown Carpentry (Josh) just completed work on a floor-to-ceiling, built-in bookshelf (10 ft x 16 ft) feature in my home. After seeing his work on his website (Photos page with embedded Instagram account), I knew Josh was the man for the job. Take a look at that Instagram account... full of pics of his work, all of which is impressive. My initial contact with him was submitting a quote request on his site, which Josh responded to promptly. After a quick back-and-forth via email, he came out to our house to have a look at the space and make a quick sketch of what I had in mind. He had told me that it'd be about 4 months before he could start on it, which was fine with us because we didn't want to entrust the project to anyone else. He got in touch with us as the project start date approached and came back out to the house to refresh his memory about the space and the details of the job. He then proceeded to build the feature in his workshop while providing us with a couple updates via email (with pictures) and posts to the Instagram account, which was appreciated and got us even more excited for the installation. One thing to note is that our project was built with red oak, and Josh saw an opportunity to enhance the piece by offering us a different species of wood (name escapes me now) for the small countertop to make it more aesthetically appealing. He looks out for you. After all the pieces were complete, he came out to the house for the install with an assistant, and they installed it in about six or seven hours. And the finished product rates above expectations. He really did a fantastic job, and we could not possibly be happier with it. We hired Josh of Triple Crown Carpentry to build a custom built-in bookshelf and entertainment center. Based on pictures online, the work he did was exactly what we thought we were looking for, and that was exactly what we got. We are amazingly happy with the finished product and the experience of working with him. We wanted something really high quality to be the focal point of our living room. It needed to be big enough to fill the bottom half of a bare two-story wall and to accommodate a 75" LED TV. Not to mention it had to have space for the pre-wired speakers to go with the TV, and to give us access to the two most important electrical outlets in the room. And to really make things custom, we wanted a corner shelf unit as part of it. Josh exceeded our expectations every step of the way. He was great at communicating by email and prompt to every meeting with us. We had a great rapport with him from the start, and he helped us with design, recommending options he could deliver with pictures of previous projects so we could really see the unit in our minds before it was built. He was realistic with the timeframe -- he's a busy man and he is the only one building these pieces -- but the fact that he was up front with us and that it's all him doing it were worth a couple of extra weeks of waiting. Even when he had some delays with his schedule, he put in the extra time to install our unit by the original target date. And the installation was done by him personally, with one assistant Jess who was also fantastic. We felt like we were in great hands. Josh also recommended a painter for us, who did a spectacular job finishing the piece. And boy, is this unit worth the wait! We love the look and the piece is solid and well-built with true professional touches. The mahogany countertop and metal mesh doors (both Josh's design suggestions, and totally worth the few dollars they added to the total project) pop. It looks like it was in the house from day one. Josh is the best. He's a very honest, straight forward, caffeinated guy! We wanted a custom made entertainment center, something to last us for many, many years to come. We got Josh's info from yelp (of all places) and contacted him. He was very helpful in getting our ideas onto paper, and then making great suggestions to improve the look of the entertainment center. His estimated were right on the money, no pun intended, and his work was right on time. He posted pictures of his progress, kept us informed at every step, and let us come down to the shop to see the entertainment center. His work is simply awesome! Solid, handmade, beautiful. I had a built in arched TV nitch in my living room that has been wasted space since having my flatscreen installed above the fireplace. I wanted some adjustable shelving done so got on Yelp calling handymen and carpenters. Almost all the bids were per hour which is fine for some but not what I was looking for. Josh was straight up and gave me a flat price (but had the choice for hourly bid) so there were no surprises. Honestly seeing the work on Josh's website I was surprised how affordable he was. The bookshelf looks phenomenal and you would never have guessed that it wasn't original to the house. How he did the top trimwork on the ceiling of the arch was just genius. 5 stars all day.
