This was my first visit back to Whisk Staples Mill after the shift to a to go market concept with Thalhimer cakes. I was pleasantly surprised at the improvements over my 3 prior visits last year. We were greeted when we walked in, all the cases were stocked and the 2 employees working answered all our questions and offered a tasting of the new chicken salad. This was AMAZING compared to prior visits. While we were there 2 more workers came in and they did not appear as friendly. We tried the thalhmier cake because we have heard a lot about them. Not being a Richmond native, this is new to us. It was a very generous slice and was pretty tasty. They cut the slice fresh for us. We also ordered a coffee and ice tea. It seemed like forever before we got our drinks. And then waited again for milk. Because they added cases and freezers, there are only 3 tables, which were pretty crowded together, and if there had been other customers we definitely would have been in the way. I didn't feel comfortable sitting there. They offer pastries, macarons, fresh breads and an assortment of prepared foods. They also had sandwiche, salads, coffee and tea to order. The to go case has a screen over it with a sign that says, "Please ask for help opening screen".....seems like that will take time and slow the grab n go process down a bit. I want to love Whisk, have followed them on social media for years and was SO excited when they opened in the west end, yet it just hasn't lived up to my expectations or the level service at other bakeries in town. Contrary to other reviews regarding employees, our visit here today went great!! The gentleman that was working today was friendly and welcoming! I of course had questions and he had prompt responses! The oatmeal cream sandwich, the almond croissant, and the coconut macaroon were all delicious and would definitely have again!! Those are three things I would recommend! I did want to order a coffee, but with the only option to have 'traditional cow milk' through the automated coffee dispenser, it left me with no option! That's the only improvement recommendations I'd have! read more

I'm so happy that Whisk has opened a second location in the west end! We've been here a couple of times and so far so good. All of their croissants are sooooo delicious! We also tried a couple of their sandwiches, their Parisian sandwich on a croissant is the best of them all. We will definitely be back to try some of their other items. read more

I was very excited that whisk opened a second location in the west end! As much as I enjoy occasionally getting a macaron on the weekend, the downtown location doesn't have the best parking options to try getting there on a weekday. We stopped by opening weekend, and I was surprised that it seemed empty and that the staff seemed unsure of what flavors they had available that day. Whisk on Main St has been our family's go-to spot for years now. Great pastries, awesome staff and great service. Such a cozy vibe. It's always consistent and we recommend that location to all our friends and family. Today I was out near Staples Mill and tried their new location. It's the complete antithesis of the Main Street location. Upon walking in it felt very stark and cold. I was the only patron there. The three staff members couldn't even be bothered to say hello. It seemed as though I had interrupted a high school clique. I asked about their seasonal croissant selection and she looked so bothered by my question. I ordered 3 croissants and the cashier said not ONE word to me the entire transaction. I told them to "have a great day" and didn't get a response in return. Croissants were great. Staff left little to be desired. All 3 of those girls could have used a lesson in customer service. Would hate for this new location to tarnish the Whisk name. One star for great pastries. read more

I used to go to the downtown location all the time, until I discovered the second location on Staples Mill which is closer to my house. My experiences was great for the most part, but it is apparent that the vibes have changed and there seems to be some rift between the manager(s) and the employees. Like their other Richmond location, their pastries are heavenly and worth 5 stars in themselves. That said, the disparity between their product and inconsistent service is maybe this location's most disappointing fault. From either their undertrained employees constantly having to go to the back room to consult who I assume is Whisk's all and powerful OZ for every patron's question, to them constantly being out of some ingredient, but failing to mention it right up until it's finally time to make your order, their always friendly staff has something to apologize for. I get it, this isn't a Panera or Starbucks churning out dozens of orders in minutes. Also, I know this is a newer location, where the employees are either still new or they haven't fully staffed up, but on nearly every visit there is something that tarnishes the pairing with their impeccable pastries. On my last visit for example, a 20min wait BEFORE you make your initial order when you've been the very next person in line that entire time would test anyone's patience for Whisk's buttery delicate croissants. It's a bad combination of being understaffed and a workstation layout (though attractive) really meant for at least 2 employees to be up front at any given time. Watching the person who takes an order also take what feels like a mile long death march to the espresso coffee station every time someone asks for an latte is almost as painful as watching them walk it all the way back to the growing line of impatient patrons. If you see only one person manning this Whisk, consider Grubhubing your coffee order from the Dunkins or Starbucks from down the street to the Whisk, it will get to you faster and with less shame. read more

Very dissapointed in the service at this bakery. Came in and greeted employee with a hello, how are you and they looked at me like I was a zombie with two heads. Both employees I interacted with looked like that was the last place they wanted to be. With customer service like that, I do not know how it will succeed. read more

First time reviewer on Yelp who had such a negative and off-putting experience at Whisk on Staples Mill that I had to share for other would-be customers. As he handed me my order, a tall, bald, male employee spoke to me with sneering sarcasm and then stared at me with strange, pointed hostility as he slowly taped the box closed. It was startling. I hadn't complained or even spoken to this employee other than to give him my name. This behavior was not just rude and insulting, it was frankly bizarre and unnerving. When I told the guests at my niece's graduation party about how I was treated, and after they tasted the dessert, we all agreed that there are plenty of other bakeries in Richmond that would welcome our business, especially considering that the simmering hostility and outright rudeness of that Whisk employee may seep into the baked goods. I certainly do want to eat anything else prepared by someone who treats his customers with such disrespect. read more

Was excited to hear about this new bakery w/ lunch options & coffee drinks opening up, after hearing about it in the news. I went in one early afternoon, there was 1 employee standing behind the counter, looking at her phone. She was friendly and took my order. I ordered a salad. She went in the back, made the salad and brought it to me in a plastic clamshell, and returned to the back area. I had to wait for her to come back out, to ask her for a fork. She brought me a metal fork and knife, but they did not look very clean. She went in the back again. I looked for napkins and there was 1 lying on the counter near the register, but I wasn't sure if it had been someone else's and didn't want to use it. When she came out again, I asked for napkins. I also had to point out to her that the menu on the wall said that all salads come with a baguette - she looked at the menu in what seemed like disbelief at first. 3 of the 5 tables were dirty (including a used cup). The floor by the register was dirty. The lighting was dim, and the smooth jazz was awful. My salad was missing an ingredient and some of the lettuce was SLIMY. *This is the trouble with being asked to tip when you pay ahead of time* After making it through that salad, I got a pastry to go. The pastry was really the only good thing about my visit. Also, I was surprised that the coffee bar wasn't more visible to customers, since they tout it on their facebook page.
