I could not be happier with this darling new location (unless they had an apartment upstairs where I could live). I remember when the bakery was a tiny hole in the wall just off Broad Street, easy to miss walking by. No longer. The new location is a beautiful corner shop, with better parking, better lighting, better seating, and even more space for the amazing baked goods we know and love. I would recommend an individual thing but it doesn't matter. Short of an allergy, nothing you can have there is a bad idea. Pain chocolate? Amazing. Kouign-amann? Surprisingly soft and fluffy. Thai iced coffee? Smooth, strong, not too sweet, and beautifully refreshing. I can't wait until the pasteles de nata are back on my hands. So should you try it? I regret not going sooner. I came in town to find the monks during their walk for peace . I had to stop by before they closed and I'm so happy I did. The two people working the front were so friendly and I loved our conversation, they had some good recommendations. They even when the extra mile to ensure my order was clear of peanuts due to my allergies . The maple cardamom was on point . They had a couple of loaves, but these were almost hidden and I didn't notice until after I'd checked out, and so ended up with a baguette and some pastries. Notably, they had a significant spread of vegan options, which I was told were the same as the non-vegan ones with the only difference being the substitution of butter for an alternative. I got some of both and no one seemed overly bothered with the difference. Some items were a bit dry, but the spread I got was still mostly devoured by the people I got it for. It wasn't too sweet so you could enjoy the whole thing but it's big enough to share. The perfect spot for morning people! Their pastries are fresh, and the right kinds of sweet, savory, flaky, etc. If I have time in the morning, I try to stop by since I know by the afternoon they'll be sold out. I wish they operated on more consistent hours, but I don't blame them for selling out almost daily! Lots of vegan options. It's very cozy inside, but don't expect any seating. Pastries are always bomb. Look on their Instagram for what they have available that day - they are very up-to-date on there. There is usually a line out the door early Sundays. They have unique items on other days besides Sundays so go during the weekday for different kinds of pastries. I give them a 4/5 solely because their coffee is not good. I have seen several people (including myself) say no to their coffee and then walk down to The Strawberry Market and get coffee from there (strawberry mkt has great serve yourself coffee). This is a Richmond treasure. I've not found a better sourdough rye. Subtlety rye-y. Delicious fresh, toasted with grass fed butter & sea salt, drizzle of good maple or raw honey. Trust. Baguettes are spectacular as the loaves of love. This is the bread. Their pièce de résistance in my opinion is their mastery of the popular Portuguese pasteis de nata. Great selection of pastries and really nice staff. Highly recommend getting a savory pastry - I got the winter squash thyme croissant and it was so well seasoned and delicious. Also they had 4 different seasonal latte flavors, so a perfect place to snag a yummy latte and pastry to start your day. The latte was very milky so I don't recommend the lattes for people who prefer coffee-forward lattes, but still it was well made! Idle Hands is one of my favorite bakeries in RVA! When I visit, I have to give myself a pastry limit before entering, because I walk in and MUST HAVE ALL OF THEM! The staff members are very friendly and assist me in narrowing it down to my self-rationed number. I tell myself I'll make my allotted pastries last, but then I eat them in rapid succession, because they are just too good to save. As I eat my pastries, I exclaim, "This is the best thing I've ever had!" But then I say the same thing with the next one... and the one after that. Everything is amazing, and I especially love their Cruffins--flaky and delicious croissant-muffin hybrids. The Cruffin filling varies by the day, and they usually post the featured flavor on Insta in the morning, along with some of their other treats for the day. This is a small, local bakery, so when they sell out for the day--that's it. The pastries always taste fresh, but I recommend going early in the day for the best selection. The bakery is cozy, so plan on taking your baked goods and coffee to-go. If it's a nice day, you can enjoy your treats in Scuffletown Park--a quiet, nearby pocket park. You can order for pick up on their website to ensure your favorite pastry is not out of stock when you get there. My favorite is the kouign amann, covered in a crunchy caramel layer, and is flaky inside. I really really really wanted to love it, but it was underwhelming. Granted, it was Wednesday about 10am so the selection was not abundant. I just really wanted a croissant real bad and hoped i would find other comforting carbs to tempt me. Alas, i did not. I purchased a tarte and the only gluten free option, a scone, which was fine. The person at the counter appeared not pleased to have a customer at 10am,my apologies, and when i asked about gf options, they said they're on a plate and pointed to a very small, sad plate of lonely scones.
