Stopped by Sugar & Salt RVA for a little afternoon pick me up sweet treat. I had just finished a meeting nearby and wanted to treat myself. I had been here once before and ordered my friend a birthday mini fruit tart and myself a cake. I remember wishing the cake was a bit more moist and curious to try other desserts. I'm so happy I returned. This time I ordered the turtle cheesecake slice and a passionfruit tart for myself. I devoured these sweets. They were so yummy. They have more of a takeout situation here, so I ordered my sweets to go and ate them at home. It's pretty tiny shop. I loved the cheesecake the most. The passionfruit tart was fun, although with passionfruit as the base flavor I wish there were more tropical topping and then maybe a plain custard one with the berries. It was still tasty. I'd recommend stopping by if you're in the area looking for some dessert. read more

MANNNN THE PASSION FRUIT TARTE WAS SO SO GOOD I THINK ABOUT IT OFTEN. I've never heard of anyone else selling the passion fruit tarte, but it was definitely the best thing that I got. The cake I had was a red velvet cake beautifully decorated, but a little heavy and sugary for me al thought I usually eat cake from asian bakeries. The toffee cookie was also amazing! Inside the display cases were beautiful, the only downside is there isn't much room and you can't really sit in there! Service was good, very welcoming! I honestly haven't had anything here that isn't good. Even if the item doesn't initially make me think, "Oh! This is great"! I ultimately still appreciate the experience. I like how the items they make are different than other businesses and everytime I go, I'm compelled to try something new. The presentation of their products alone keep me going back time and time again. They'll forever have a customer in me because each item is unique. I tried the cinnamon roll on this visit and returned to the car to eat it while I waited for my nephew to finish getting his haircut a few doors down. Before I started eating it vowed I would only eat half so I could try the other half heated up. The breading didn't taste like a regular dough, but was a little sour? I'd have to call and verify for sure. The roll also wasn't overly sweet. The icing was everything! I stuck to my vow and made sure to only eat half. I immediately heated the other half in the microwave for ten seconds and it definitely tasted better. The icing was still everything! I cant wait until the next visit. Ordered few birthday cakes from them and each one was spectacular! From moist cake to fluffy filing and icing everything was amazing but their cake decorations are out of this world! Staff is always friendly and ready to accommodate! Their shop is small, just a desk with register and cake/dessert displays. I wish that they have a few tables so you can get a dessert and coffee to enjoy there but what count is that their cakes are delicious. They are a must stop for a birthday cake for me and my family! It was a huge hit and look at how beautiful this cake is! Very easy to order over the phone and quick, easy and friendly pick up. There's no place to sit in this bakery, so definitely a place to grab a slice to go or to order custom cakes. But trust and believe, their cakes taste as beautiful as they look! I can't believe I had never heard of this place before? It was amazing! We walked inside the small shop and the sweet, freshly baked, cozy aroma hit us in the face. The display trays had soo many unique and tempting dessert options (cakes, pastries, cookies) and they even have GF cookie options! Yummy-sounding options like Butterscotch Cake lined the shelves. Service was no-fuss, with the one person behind the counter explaining all the flavors and options very knowledgeably. We got the Turtle Cheesecake and Butterscotch Cake to take home. The butterscotch was good but very very sweet. I probably wouldn't get this again, but was glad I tried it. The cheesecake was one of the BEST cheesecakes I've had in a while! Superrr thick, creamy, not overly sweet, with silky chocolate and crunchy walnut toppings, it was the perfect bite. Random stop after a nice long walk down to the James River. Needed a quick snack before heading to brunch and OMG not what I had in mind but how excited my inner sweet tooth demon was. This is a sweet tooth fanatics heaven and I took advantage with getting 2 fruit tarts (Key Lime & forget the other), oatmeal raisin cook and 2 mini frosted donuts. Pretty quick checkout and staff very friendly too. Literally I wanted everything but talked myself into these purchases. I could have literally ordered 4-5 other things easily lol. This is a really awesome spot and they apparently make custom CIRCULAR cakes only lol. I overheard a phone conversation with someone asking for a square cake lol. I am home visiting my parents from California, and ended up staying for my birthday (which wasn't originally the plan!). I decided to get a cake last minute, and I found S&S RVA --where else? On Yelp :) As everyone said, Sara was amazing to work with. I sent her a detailed email with some elements I wanted to include: a letter cake with my 'A' initial; an orange, pink, and yellow design aesthetic; and icing florals and succulents since I'm obsessed with flowers and plants. She designed an absolutely gorgeous cake my parents and brother ooh'd and aah'd over. I absolutely loved it! Unfortunately, the cake + icing combination I chose wasn't as delicious as I'd hoped it would be. The actual cake, a vanilla sponge cake, tasted incredible; unfortunately, the icing threw the whole cake off. I requested the Italian buttercream rather than the default/American style buttercream, and it was a colossal mistake. I ordered the Italian version of buttercream because it's generally a milder sweetness, which I prefer because I don't like super sweet desserts. However, this particular Italian it wasn't quite sweet enough for my taste and it was a little more oily than I like as well. My parents didn't like it at all. My brother has Celiac, so he couldn't partake or weigh in. So sadly, three of us had a small piece of this relatively gigantic cake, and no one even finished their slice, let alone the rest of the cake. I was bummed to have spent the $$ on a custom cake that I didn't get to eat. However, I loved the design, so that's something. If I had it to do over, I'd definitely order another icing, which I think would have greatly improved the situation. I'd definitely still recommend this bakery because the customer service was incredible and Sara and her staff do beautiful design. I do encourage tasting before ordering so you don't end up making my mistake. read more

Found this cute little bakery one day I decided to explore RVA over break. I have to say I fell in LOVE! They are small in space and are only good for pick-up, but they make up for it by being big on flavor! I ordered an Oreo cake slice and my cousin ordered the lemon berry. Both cakes had their respective fillings inside, and both cakes held up on their own. This is a bakery that takes orders as well as one that allows you to pop-in for a quick sweet fix. They have a variety from cinnamon rolls, tarts to cookies and cakes. I also like the fact that they are reasonably priced! They're in the Historic Jackson Ward area with smaller restaurants around which makes it cool if you're on foot because you can stop for dessert after a meal! That's what we did! read more

The attendant was extremely knowledgeable on the all the little details; from where the ingredients come from and what time everything was prepared. This is a hidden gem located in a historic neighborhood. The inside is small, but has such a cute aesthetic and let's get into the desserts...there are so many options from cake, cheesecake, cookies, etc. Now, I decided to try some type of strawberry cake which was decadent and not too sweet and thoroughly enjoyed it while my dad got a cheesecake that was topped with fruits which he enjoyed very much.
