We found this spot about a year ago while searching for a local bakery, and now it's basically our Saturday tradition whenever we can make it. We've never had a disappointing meal. The Vanilla Latte is one of the best I've had, and their breakfast sandwiches never miss. My husband and I absolutely love the vibe -- it feels like one of those cozy neighborhood cafés you see in the movies. The staff is always super friendly, and service is quick. And, DON'T skip dessert! Their Nutella Brownie = 10/10!
A Richmond classic - but if you can endure the lines! I used to come here a lot more but truly the long line deters me. Still rating 5 stars because I've had so many memories here! --------------------------------- Drinks: I usually get a cold brew or latte. The cold brew hits, especially after a nice long run around Carytown/grove. Their lattes are alright, but not as good as some other places. The matcha is unfortunately not the best either, I think they use some type of sweetened powder as even the unsweetened is still sweet and the matcha flavor tastes burnt and not the best quality Also wish they had more seasonal drink options (other than the seasonal syrups) Recommendations: cold brew with splash of oat; pastries (macarons) Affordability: well priced (especially in this economy) Ambiance: cozy coffee shop vibes to hang out, not the best for studying/work Service: Great! they also have stamp cards Good for: post run coffee, coffee when you are not in a rush
Sugar & Twine is a great option for coffee while shopping in Carytown. I ordered their Harvest Latte, served iced, and it was delightful. It didn't take too long to be prepared either. Service was friendly and the shop was cozy. I'll have to try their pastries on my next visit, as they all looked so good.
I've been trying a lot of cafes in Richmond lately and sugar & twine is ranking quite high. This bustling little cafe has so much charm and I'm obsessed with the aesthetic. I've been here three times in the last month and all experiences have been so good and I will echo and agree with most of the reviews. Sugar and twine is located in the heart of Carytown. They have a decent amount of seating. If you go on the weekend then forget about seating cause it's usually packed. They have a great menu and incredible pastries. I also like that they have a seasonal menu with fun drinks. I tried their chai which I think is some of the best chai in town. I also got the ube latte from their seasonal menu. Which I loved. I'd like to try it dirty chai to see what that's like. They are a lot of different desserts from sweet to savory which I enjoy a lot and they are delicious. I like that this cafe isn't overly priced like many cafes in the area.
Yes, the line is long--but this place is 100% worth the wait. Their croissant breakfast sandwich is my personal gold standard: flaky, buttery, perfectly warm, and packed with just the right mix of savory fillings. It's the kind of sandwich you think about days later. What keeps me coming back just as much? Their drinks. I'm obsessed with the matcha lemonade--refreshing, not too sweet, and the perfect pick-me-up. And their Thai coffee? Bold, creamy, and totally addictive. Bonus points for their vegan bakery options, which are genuinely delicious (not just "good for vegan"). Whether you're dairy-free or just curious, you'll be impressed. It's one of those rare places where you can't really go wrong--everything's made with care, and it tastes like it.
Sugar and Twine is wonderful. I went there to try some baked goods recently. I got the GF chocolate chip cookies and almond horns. Flavor wise these were both amazing and fresh considering they're both gluten free. One major thing that I think they could improve on would be avoiding cross contamination between gluten free items and regular items. Having the gluten free ones in such close proximity to the gluten containing ones kinda defeats the purpose of them being gluten free especially for people that are more sensitive and have celiac disease. Services was quick and I could tell many people love it here since it was so busy. Even though it was busy the line moved really fast. Next time I might come by to try some coffee.
Sugar and Twine has been on my list of to-do's since I moved to RVA over a year ago. The line is always long but my friend and I were able to snag a table. This place is busy and for a reason: it's gooood! I enjoyed a vanilla latte with whole milk and a vegan pumpkin muffin. Both didn't survive as I dug right in. The atmosphere in this place is mixed with families, friends, and maybe those who are remote workers. I'll be going back.
This coffee shop is very cute and has good options for both coffee and non-coffee drinkers. I got the turmeric ginger latte and it is super tasty. The ginger is subtle and it has a nice turmeric taste, which pair perfectly together. The workers were kind and efficient, even for it being busy. The place was busy and didn't have any open seats, so if you're looking for a place to sit, you likely have to go early.
We were in the area and had been wanting to try this coffee shop, and it did not disappoint! When we walked up, there was a crowd outside which immediately confirmed how popular it is, but even with the crowd the service was extremely quick -- we didn't wait more than five minutes for our drinks. I ordered a dirty iced chai latte and my fiancé got a latte with their honey lavender syrup, and both were absolutely delicious. We couldn't resist the pastries (they all looked incredible!) and ended up with a cardamom bun, which I loved -- it was amazing. The staff were super sweet, and they even offered our dog a little treat while we waited. Such a wonderful experience all around, and we'll definitely be back!
I love Sugar and Twine. Not only for the countless memories I've had at this spot, but for their pastries too. I've enjoyed watching the evolution of this spot in the last five years. I've made friends in their old cafe, I've enjoyed countless pandemic picnics with their vegan breakfast sandwich and blueberry scones, and I've now really enjoyed their new cafe section. They still have the outdoor takeout line as an option, but if you're looking to dine in, you can enjoy your tasty pastries indoors! There is plenty of seating in their new cafe. The decor is quite similar to their old vibe, just more contemporary. I love all the delicious lighting that spills into the space and the communal table in the middle. The baristas/bakers are super efficient and willing to help you out with any questions you may have. I will admit, I am not a fan of any of the drinks I get here, so I typically only order food. You can't go wrong with a baked good from Sugar and Twine. Their best baked goods in my opinion are their scones. I love their vegan breakfast sandwich as well as their other breakfast sandwiches. Lines can get long, but with the new cafe it goes by pretty quickly.
The Ube Matcha with oatmilk was wonderful. As a matcha lover, I would confidently come here again for matcha. The ube to matcha ratio was perfect and it wasn't too sweet whatsoever. A lot of places make their matcha way too sweet, but not here. If you like a cute café with good matcha, this is for you. Located on Cary street so expect it to be busy at times!

They're consistent, baked goods are the best quality, made from scratch, sooo delicious. Like, who in the south doesn't want a buttermilk biscuit to start the day?!?! Plus, the coffee - I'm a latte girl - is actually really good! The vegan breakfast sandwich is actually a homemade recipe jam-packed with healthy proteins, not that chemical vital wheat gluten crap they serve everywhere else. Plus, it's on focaccia! The muffins thoooo - the blackberry brown sugar will change your life! You literally won't eat another muffin. Imagine your granny's fruit pie, but with blackberries and brown sugar, and as a muffin. Seeeeriously! Plus, it's a woman-owned business and the staff is absolutely amazing. Excuse my pictures, they're trash bc I'm always picking up on the way to work and scarfing down in the car.
It's hard to mess up a mocha iced coffee (it's just chocolate coffee!), but this had to be one of my all time favorites. The flavor was exceptionally tasty - creamy and sweet but not overwhelming. They also used crystallized sugar which was an unexpected yet welcome addition. I tried out the brown butter blackberry muffin, which was outstanding! Moist and crunchy with bits of pecan throughout. The Nutella brownie was super rich and delicious. The pepperjack pretzel was more pretzel/bread than cheese. It was pretty bland and it was not my favorite. For all three pastries and a small mocha, my total was ~$15. I went around 11am on a Friday and there were already several people in the queue, but my order was ready in less than 10 minutes. I will be back for the coffee and muffins!
I used to go to Sugar & Twine all the time before Covid. I hadn't been back in years, so it was such a pleasant surprise to return to Richmond and visit Sugar & Twine again and see what it's become. I love the decor, and the seating area feels appropriate for the space. It still has that community, shared vibe that I remember. The baristas are so nice and answered my questions without hesitation, even with a line. We tried the turmeric ginger latte, both caffeinated and decaf, and wow, really good. My parents and I stumbled upon this bakery while exploring Richmond this morning, and I was immediately impressed by the diversity of options they have. One of the things I instantly noticed on the menu was their vegan breakfast sandwich with a homemade bean-based sausage patty. I got myself an egg and cheese sandwich on a buttermilk biscuit (delicious, by the way) with pepper jack cheese, veggies (tomato, lettuce, and avocado), and for a dollar extra, one of their vegan breakfast sausage patties. I was immediately impressed by how flavorful the patty was- you get a crispness upon the first bite and then the creaminess of the beans afterwards. It was absolutely incredible in a way I can't even describe. I also got the Thai iced coffee, which tasted as sweet as a typical Thai iced tea, yet in coffee form. I may only be spending a few days in Richmond, but I'm absolutely coming back next time I'm here to try more things. DIVINE! The woman behind the counter was super sweet too. We enjoyed a bacon, egg, and cheese biscuit breakfast sandwich, as well as a cinnamon bun (Friday-Sunday only) and a strawberry biscuit. Sugar & Twine has two storefronts, one for eat-in counter service and the other for takeout -- very smart! We were just coming into town for the day and had a delightful breakfast, complete with tasty coffee drinks, as we planned out our day in Richmond. I hadn't been to sugar and twine since they opened the new portion and I would highly recommend checking it out after visiting it! The atmosphere was great, and it was nice to have a spot to sit down now. It would be a good place to go and work or catch up with a friend. I got the sage and fontina croissant and like always it was so good as well as a honey latte if you were in Carytown, it's definitely a good spot for coffee. read more
I was told this is the best chai latte in RVA! I used to live in RVA but never came here; it was always odd to me because it was only an order window. However, now they have a full storefront and seating inside! I recently came back to RVA from Colorado and this was the place to on my list to try! My chai latte did not disappoint. I don't drink coffee so this is my drink. It was busy inside on a cold rainy Saturday. The staff was pleasant. I was shocked to see a food menu beyond pastels. There are good vegan and Gf options. This would be a nice place to meet up with friends and/or do remote work. This is a good spot but did not blow my mind. I would consider this as THE coffee spot in Carytown. read more

I should've tried this place much sooner! The pastries here are amazing! I ended up getting a whole bunch so I could help support the business since the water shutdown screwed everyone all up! Everything I got tastes delicious. I got the blueberry scone, chocolate croissant, buttermilk biscuit and cinnamon bun. Great size and even yummier taste! There's a window to pick up stuff which is so convenient and then there's also an actual cafe right next to it. One of my new favorite spots for sure! Can't wait to come back! read more

This is a very popular spot to grab a drink or snack. My partner and I stopped in one weekend, and decided to stop in for some food. We each ordered an egg biscuit sandwich. I also got a chai tea. There was a little bit of a line, but the employees seemed efficient, and we spent less than 10 minutes in the building before we got our food. There is limited seating space inside, so we took our food and found a bench down the street to eat. The biscuits were hot and very flavorful, and the chai was delicious as well. I was skeptical at first but this place is a gem! My husband and I love trying cafes and pastries when we travel, and this one did NOT disappoint. We tried two treats (some gluten free almond thing and their euphoreo cookie) and both were AMAZING. I couldn't put my finger on what makes the flavors so distinct but whatever it is, we loved it! The drinks were tasty. The service was fast despite a long line, so we weren't waiting long. It's a hard place to grab a spot to sit and eat there because it's so busy, but it was worth the visit. read more

Carytown is better with this place around. The perfect morning hangout spot post-run club, and with a bomb Fontina/Thyme Croissant. Lots of fun pastry options and some pretty solid coffee for an affordable price - some of the pastries are sub-$3! Comfortable interior with friendly service, lots of seating space, and with an accessible window for takeout ordering if you're not feeling the whole indoors thing. Reliable and fresh :) read more

Sugar and Twine has my whole heart. Their staff has always been incredibly quick and kind to me - customer service is 10/10. I appreciate they now offer a beautiful and clean indoor space as well as a quick grab and go pick up window. Their iced chai (and hot chai latte) ranks as one of my favorites in Richmond, sweet not too spicy - both take care of my chai craving. Of their pastries - the blackberry biscuit was outstanding. Flakey, not dry, burst of blackberry flavor with the crystallized sugar that adds a subtle crunch, stunning. The breakfast sandwiches also perfectly pair with their drinks and pastries, a perfect symphony of flavor and texture! I take friends and family here and always recommend this place to anyone seeking out a Richmond recommendation for coffee/grab and go breakfast. read more

Coffee, and treats, while nestled indoors with loved ones? Sounds like a job for Sugar and Twine! Not too long ago, the lovely Sugar & Twine in Carytown reopened their doors to us, after remodeling their interior. This was a long-awaited move, and people all over RVA kept visiting their pick-up window while they waited for the grand re-opening. Now, instead of the pick-up window, you may come on in from the elements and enjoy a warm beverage, and perhaps a fresh breakfast sandwich. That's exactly what my husband and I did a few times this Fall. First of all, the service hasn't changed a bit- the baristas are friendly, fast, and professional. They will keep that line moving, so it never feels like a wait. Once inside, you'll see that this line forms to the left, and winds through the back of the cafe. There's a large table in the middle of the floor, flanked by bar stool style chairs. Along the right side of the cafe, under the sun's warm glow, there are several tables meant for 2 - 4 people. We chose the only open seat, but we noticed another open quickly. People don't come here to work or linger, they seem to visit with friends and family while they're eating, and then move on. There's a lot to see in Carytown! For this trip, my husband ordered a hot chocolate with an oatmeal cream pie, and I asked for a latte and a double chocolate cookie. Since we were eating there, we were served using plates and mugs, which I enjoyed. There is sunlight, our treats tempted us. Once I got started with my double chocolate cookie, I couldn't stop. I rarely eat sweets these days, and for a special treat, this one worked. There were gooey chocolate chips all throughout the chocolate cookie; while the cookie was not served warm, these chips still melted in my mouth. Someone took care to make sure this cookie was a delight! Of course, I tried my husband's oatmeal cream pie. Wow! What a soft, chewy and pleasant texture these cookies had. Sandwiched between them was the smoothest buttercream frosting. These sweet flavors and soft textures played off each other so well. I chose a latte without any flavors, so the bitterness would pair well with the chocolate cookie. I didn't want a mocha, or vanilla latte, because it would have distracted me from how great the cookie was. I made the right choice: the latte was creamy and smooth, and really did the chocolate cookie justice. My husband's hot chocolate was the perfect comfort choice for an oatmeal cream pie. The mellow sweetness of this hot chocolate was soothing, and it wasn't too sweet. The chocolate flavor really came through, and it was delicious. Opening Sugar & Twine for all to enjoy was an excellent move. The quality of service and food shines, and now, we have somewhere cozy to sit. read more
I love sugar and twine! They've got delicious coffee and drinks and baked goods. Last time I got a lavender matcha latte and I really enjoyed it paired with some sweets. They don't have indoor seating and there's usually a line outside, but it's certainly worth the wait. read more
