I LOVE the vibes in here! Plus any coffee shop with couches is such a homey vibe, you don't see couches anymore as much. I came for the chai cinnamon roll BUT I came too late. Get here EARLY early if you want any specific baked goods, because they will sell out. I was also here on a Saturday morning at like 10:30/11am. Plenty of seating and good drinks and pastries. I tried one of the seasonal drinks - cafe de Bella and it was strong as heck! Deff not getting that again but excited to try something else next time. The pastries were all delicious as well, the pistachio croissant is a little too stuffed for me and super rich! But it was still good, I can't wait to come back and get the cinnamon roll. We woke up in our hotel in Downtown Richmond and wanted to get out for a walk as the weather was nice. My wife is the bigger coffee connoisseur between us and she picked Ironclad after reviewing nearby options. I confirmed that Ironclad had the highest coffee shop ratings in the area so we took the walk from our hotel. The server was very nice and helpful. We saw that the bakery items were freshly made so we couldn't pass up on getting something to go along with our cappuccinos. The bacon egg and cheese croissant was sold out so we got the BEC biscuit instead. Both the cappuccino and the BEC were amazing! I ordered the Browned Butter Chocolate Chip Cookie Milk Latte with oat milk. It was just okay. I don't taste any cookie or flavor, it tastes like a regular latte but it did come with a little cookie on the top. The espresso tastes so burnt. My friend got the iced matcha with oat milk vanilla and a little chai and she liked it. She rated it a 7/10. I'll rate mine a 3/10. Ridiculously overpriced. My latte was $12 and hers was $15. They told us we could order our drinks from a self serve kiosk and then order bakery items and food in the regular line. It's a good idea in theory, but the self serve kiosk is kind of overwhelming due to the menu and the plethora of options to customize a latte. They do have a lot of good looking bakery items as well as biscuit sandwiches. I got the chicken biscuit which was pretty big but pricey at $9. I also got a butterscotch iced latte, which was tasty, but also expensive at $7. Their specialty drinks were even more at $9.50-10.50. As we heard each customer ahead of us pick off the last of the ones we wanted, we landed on a pain au chocolat and a (stupidly large) cinnamon roll. The pain au chocolat was incredible! The cinnamon roll was very bread-y. For sips, I got the Molino de Maiz cappuccino. I would return for that everyday if I could. My husband got their white mocha which was also quite perfect. We scored a spot on the purple couch which set the ambiance and the mood for the morning! My only feedback is that they need to keep the couches and side tables a bit cleaner. I finally got to try Ironclad today at their downtown location. There was a line, but I expected that at 10am on a Sunday. All the baked goods looked delicious, but I landed on the Poe-inspired never s'more cruffin, the creamy spinach and gruyère galette, the pain au chocolat, and a mocha. Service was friendly and my latte was ready quite quickly for how busy they were. We found a cozy spot on a couch and soft chair and I had the cruffin, which was super tasty, with my latte. The cruffin was flaky and soft and chocolatey in the middle. Later, I warmed the galette up for dinner. It was flaky and very flavorful. The pain au chocolat is huge and will be tomorrow's breakfast. We were visiting the city and I'm a sucker for a local coffee spot. I thought this was a single location but I found out later that there are a ton of them scattered around. This location is very cool. Comfortable couches and unique decor, a lot of it coffee related. Very welcoming. The coffee bar is in the middle of the floor plan so you get to see everything going on which is cool. We did the kiosk order which was like a cheat code, we didn't have to wait in line. There were a million people in there on a Sunday morning, we didn't even have a spot to really wait and couldn't really maneuver so it was a little overwhelming. But the drinks. We paid $20 for two coffees. My husband's was okay. This place seemed FANCY - for a $10 a piece coffee I assumed they had someone who specialized in flavor profiles. But they definitely don't. Tamari is made in Richmond and they had a latte with it....love a good salty and sweet latte, I get them often..but this one tasted like soy sauce in a cup. It was supposed to be white chocolate and tamari, again, I expected some soy flavor, but this literally tasted like I could have bought a bottle of soy sauce for much cheaper and had the same outcome, minus the caffeine. Decently sized coffee shop with a great ambiance! Loved the variety of seating offered here and the design was very open with natural elements everywhere. This felt like such a nice spot to sit and enjoy a coffee or pastry. They also have a cute outdoor area adorned with a lovely mural which makes for a fun photo spot. The cashier was extremely nice and patient when I explained it was my first time there. I ended up getting a Dubai Croissant and Honey Orange Habenero cinnamon bun, after seeing them on socials for a long time. I was sadly disappointed in the Cinnamon Bun, which tasted a bit stale. The frosting on top was delicious and abundant but prevented me from being able to warm it up to try to get past the stale texture. The croissant itself was delicious however, it did not look the same as advertised on social media, there was a lot less filling. It was delicious but cutting it open I expected to see a large amount of filling as seen in their videos but I was greeted with a plain croissant inside. It was not until cutting it into fourths that I finally saw the filling on either side. I would recommend the Dubai Croissant if you're interested in that flavor profile, I'm just unsure if the filling amounts are consistent, at the price point I hope that it was just a fluke. This place is a little on the pricier end, I paid 21 dollars after taxes before tip for both pastries. However, I think the ambiance, customer service and unique pastry offerings made it worth it. You can tell they care about their customer base and want to put out high quality products. I may stick to their croissant like pastries in the future and excited to try them again when I'm looking for a more high end/unique treats. read more

What a cute coffee shop! Came into town and wanted to catch up with a friend, and she suggested meeting here. For food, my husband and I shared a chicken biscuit (YUM with the honey!) and a tasty chocolate pistachio baked good. For coffee, I got a lavender latte with some chantilly cream - I will say I was shook by the prices, this shop might've had some of the most expensive coffee drinks I've seen. Stumbled into this coffee shop and it was booming ! I absolutely loved the vibes and decor they had. The staff were nice and worked quickly. There was quite a line to wait in when I got there- but their line sometimes was long - sometimes was short. Depends on the time you go in. I got a Matcha Latte & the Pain Au Chocolat and it was amazing. The matcha was pretty meh, but the baked good was 10/10. They bake their goodies every day all day. I was excited to go to ironclad based on their good reviews, however I am a bit disappointed. I got the coconut macaroon cookie milk latte with oat milk. I paid $17 for this, which I think is a bit extreme, and by far the most I've ever paid for any type of coffee or any non-alcoholic beverage. It was a good latte and came with a cookie on top, not overly sweet, but $17 for a drink that is mostly ice and oat milk? I did not ask for any extra shots of espresso. The espresso was good, the combination of everything worked well, this is just hard to justify. The line was long, they were out of sandwiches, so I can't review on any food aspect. I would give this 5 stars... but I did not get to try their coffee. I visited on this past Sunday from out of town and Yelped a good coffee/bakery spot near where I needed to be in RVA. Ironclad percolated to the top, so I tamped in the address and steamed my way over... only to be met with a line out the door, literally. Judging my time, I figured I could shave a few minutes if I ordered drip, and just grabbed a pastry from the counter box. After shuffling along for minutes, I was greeted with a beautiful Nutella Cruffin, only to be told they didn't have any drip coffee available, that their machine broke. Not having time enough to wait for an Americano or pour-over, I just rode away with my delicious cruffin to the race start. I always forget to take photos when at ironclad. I'm giving a four star because although their coffee remains solid as does the non-vegan breakfast options (per my husband), over the last few years, they've had less vegan options for me when. When I first started going in, I would've given it a five star rating as they had these delicious vegan breakfast sandwiches, then it was so-so vegan quiches and the last time I went in, just prepackaged vegan oatmeal, which I ate, but I am not a fan of oatmeal. They also have some cute stickers, shirts and other items. I often wear my shirt and get compliments. The service there has always been good and the ambience is fantastic; the shop itself being in an old fire station. Most of the time I don't have a hard time finding parking nearby either. This had me wired all day. 10/10. Second visit, I tried their matcha with mocha. Good quality matcha, it was so good! Definitely one of the better spots to get matcha in RVA. 8/10. Third visit, I tried their Iced chai, also really good. They did put a little too much cinnamon cause I kept choking on it lol but overall it was good 8/10. The almond croissant was really good and HUGE. I was delighted to see it had some kind of cream filling in the middle. 9/10. I definitely recommend this place for good quality coffee and pastries. This is the second time I got to visit Ironclad and loved it just as much as when I first visited. The ambiance is great. There are sofas on the bottom floor and seating upstairs. There is a small table and kids espresso machine as well on the second floor, which my kids throughly enjoyed. The coffee is exceptionally good. My husband ordered an iced latte which was delicious. I ended up ordering one of their specialty tea drinks, which was also quite delicious. As for food, my kids enjoyed their breakfast sandwich. There were a number of delicious baked goods. We only got the apple cider donut, which i enjoyed. Price for food was a tad expensive. Highly recommend and hope to visit again one day! read more

Ironclad Coffee Roasters is a must visit RVA located in Shockoe Bottom. We visited late morning and the place was buzzing on a beautiful November day! One could choose to sit inside of the open air cafe' The historic building was formerly a firehouse. Outside seating is available too. A diverse clientele of students, business people and others were relaxing enjoying their specialty coffees and homemade pastries while listening to live piano music accompanied by soft trumpet music. A good number of people were taking their orders to go. The cafe' was well staffed with cheerful and motivated "friends" who worked together as a team to provide excellent service. Our cappuccinos were a little delayed but the staff was apologetic and thanked us for our patience. Our cappuccinos went perfectly with the chocolatey - buttery Pain au Chocolat pastry. The chocolate chip scone was moist and delicious. We bought some bagged coffee to brew at home and some to give as Christmas gifts. I was in Richmond and wanted to try a local place for coffee. Ironclad looked like a great option. There were about 10 people in line when I got there and the line moved quickly. They have a great assortment of pastries and some breakfast sandwiches but many were sold out. I had an Iced Butterscotch Latte that was okay, but weak on espresso. Another shot was needed. I also ordered what I thought was a cinnamon roll based on it looking like a cinnamon roll and not being labeled differently. It was actually a Pumpkin Spice Roll (?). It was actually even better than a cinnamon roll would have been, but still a surprise. For to-go drinks, the staff sometimes puts kids on the drinks and other times don't. While waiting on my drink, I saw multiple people be confused by the lack of lid and have to be directed to the small area where the kids and straws were located. I think fit hot drinks, it is to show off the latte art. Overall, it was good experience. It isn't cheap - $18 for my cinnamon roll and latte and I paid for parking in the lot across the street which was another $6. There is a fair amount of on-street parking and if I were to return, I would spend more time looking for a spot. read more

Part of a stellar cafe experience is exemplary customer service, people visit cafes mostly for the atmosphere and service, but also the good coffee. But it seems the staff here leaves much to be desired, when I didn't like the coffee I got provided I did sample the raw brew, and did have a latte prior, unlike my past great experiences. I could replace my disliked coffee for another, neither I could replace it for an orange juice, or even a gift card to use later, I never asked for a refund because I always like people to keep the tips. Sadly this experience left an even more bitter taste ^_^ Please help your staff understand that service and atmosphere is why people drop 20+tips on their visits. You're not selling just coffee, you're selling the "experience" And this time I'm sad to say I didn't get it. read more

Such a cool spot! The ambiance in this coffee shop is incredible and history is present from wall to ceiling. Really love the vibe of this coffee shop.
