This is THE place for a grilled cheese in our city. The best part is they cater to the lactose intolerant folks and vegans too with really delicious ingredients that don't feel like lame substitutes. My fiancé and I live nearby and love coming here for a unique grilled cheese. They have everything from a classic sandwich to a decadent magical sandwich. The sandwiches here are made with love. I adore the woman who we usually run into when we come. She usually is the one who makes our sandwiches and I love how she writes something sweet on the box. These are delicious and big sandwiches. I always leave feeling full and sometimes even have leftovers. I love that the sandwiches come with a mini tomato basil soup for dipping. I highly recommend getting a sandwich with the focaccia, it's beyond delicious. My recent favorite is the Duval Sisters with plant based cheese and rosemary focaccia. Billie's Holiday is another favorite. It is more of a takeout vibe, but they do have two tables outside in front with four chairs if you want to eat there. You're also not too far from Clay Park or a picnic bench parklet in front of Art 180 (about 8 minute walk away). First, the food was delicious. We ordered a Brooklyn with tomatoes soup. It was crispy, gooey and the soup was a touch spicy almost. Excellent! But I can not give a higher review due to the 40 minute (I'm not exaggerating) wait we had for that order. It was painful to watch the snail pace of the establishment especially considering it is a takeout only spot. The employees making the food were struggling to get food on the paninis in any semblance of efficiency, he was wearing one glove but touching everything with both hands. The counter was filled with no food items, paperwork, etc. It was not the ambiance or behavior you want to witness while waiting on food. We were in town for a wedding and staying at a nearby Air B&B right down the street. I ordered food online and went to pick it up. It's a small little place with only a few seats. My food was ready to go when I arrived approximately 20 minutes after ordering. I got the turkey panini to split with my wife. I got the classic which has lettuce, tomatoes, red onion and mayo. It was exceptional! The cheese was gooey and sandwich hot and delicious. My wife got the pimento cheese with crackers which is sourced and made locally. They also had beer to go! I tried a blueberry ale from Isley Brewing, which is also local. We also got two cookies which were soft and chewy, just the way we like them. So a short drive away, I made my way to Cheddar Jackson, in Historic Jackson Ward. This was my first time in Jackson Ward despite having ties to the Richmond area for two decades. Cheddar JacksonChopped is a grilled cheese panini shop with many vegetarian and vegan options, soups, and sides. Grilled cheese is my favorite comfort food, which I always ask for when under the weather. I walked, and it was playing good RnB music.. I ordered our food via a kiosk, and there was also a QCR code on the high-top tables. My mom ordered All New Swiss Lyss 2.0, Turkey, and Swiss panini the Classic way with arugula, tomatoes, red onions, and mayo. I ordered the impossible chopped cheese. .. a broiled Impossible Burger, chopped and seasoned with melty cheddar jack cheese. I also upgraded to the classic to include arugula, tomato, and red onion. The sandwiches came out wrapped in newsprint paper. Both of the sandwiches had gooey cheese. The bread was buttery and crispy. Each sandwich comes with a side, and my mom got the slaw. I grabbed the creamy crab cheddar bisque. There are nice chunks of white crab meat. Thank you to Richmond native owner Brandon for giving my mom a better memory of Jackson Ward and my first one! It was lunchtime, and I remembered Cheddar Jackson just opened in Jackson Ward, so I scooted on over and got the Northern Liberties on wheat, which comes with a 1/2 cup of chunky tomato basil soup. The bread was THE BOMB (so buttery and crispy just like a panini should be), but honestly, the filling (onions and peppers) was so tart, I couldn't really enjoy it. And the portabella was scant. Or maybe it all just tasted the same sour that I couldn't discern the taste of the portabella. The chunky tomato basil soup is VERY chunky. Too chunky for my taste, and yet again, too tart. Everything I ate tasted sour. Sour lunch. With just a few modifications, everything could be delicious. If there's a next time, it'll be just a plain grilled cheese. Doubtful, though. Too bad. The sandwich was made to order so I waited outside ~10minutes. the Duvall sisters sandwich was A-MAZING. again, the motto it absolutely right. The cheeses, the bacon jam, the buttery bread. THE BACON JAM. The cheddar broccoli was yummy too! So much broccoli in the cup, so it was really filling. I also got a mango sake. It seems like they use the Kirkland signature (Costco) brand for most of their ingredients, so the quality is good. They have a solid variety of unique sandwiches, & cook them all well. Sandwiches also come with a little 4oz cup of dipping soup which was really good. I hate tomatoes but sometimes I take a chance on tomato soul and this one was so worth it. I got a roast beef and cheddar panini (pictured), in the pic it looks a little flat but it was full enough of meat and cheese and horseradish. The horseradish flavor was so great, and it didn't even over power the meat and cheese. I'd definitely order this again and probably try some other stuff as well! I wanted to love this place but it's right in the middle for me. Not too many options for sandwiches but I've had the Brooklyn and Smoked Robinson. I was so excited to try Cheddar Jackson, the newish establishment in Jackson Ward making fancy grilled cheese sandwiches. I mean, who doesn't love bougie grilled cheese? I've been struggling for a couple days with migraines and was really craving some comfort food. After spending an hour searching Yelp delivery for something that would hit right, I settled on finally trying Cheddar Jackson. I ordered the Bella I think it was called. Mozzarella and provolone with kale pesto and sun dried tomatoes drizzled with balsamic fig glaze. It stated that it would come with a half cup of the tomato soup but I also ordered a cup to have some for dinner. Additionally, I wanted to try the pickled cabbage and red onion and an order of the salted chocolate chip cookies because like I said, I felt terrible for days and wanted a treat. Well, I only received one small container of the soup so I'm not sure if that was what was supposed to accompany it or if that was my cup of soup but my idea for extra didn't work out. And my cookies were not included which made me super sad but was a relatively painless call to get refunded from the delivery provider. Snafu aside, I hate to say it but the food just isn't that great. My sandwich was just ok. The pesto was bland and I could not taste any of the aforementioned drizzle. It did have a ton of sun dried tomatoes but that was about all you could taste. And the cheese seemed practically non-existent. The crispy edges of the bread had a nice buttery flavor but that's about all I can say for that. The tomato soup had a nice roasted flavor but felt more like a marina or dipping sauce then soup. The best item in my order was the pickled cabbage which was tangy and crisp. All in all it was a regrettable meal. Pretty certain I won't be ordering here again. read more
