It's like Perly's had a kid, sent them to VCU, and they opened a restaurant. The cauliflower appetizer was surprisingly good. The florets stayed crispy, the whipped feta, chilies, and pomegranate made an unexpectedly pleasant combo. The Reuben was well executed. The bread retained its sturdiness instead of the normal sponge like qualities you might find with other Reubens around town. The meat was melt in your mouth tender and every bite contained components of the sandwich, rather than the usual wrestling match of sliced meat in your mouth. The service was meh. It's counter service with sit down restaurant prices. Here's the funny thing: you are given a number for food to be delivered to your table. The waitress puts the food down on your table and directs you to a rolling cart where plates, napkins, etc. are BUT the waitress has to pass the rolling cart to bring you your food. Could we have not received appetizer plates and silverware when we checked out and were handed our drinks? I don't think anyone can get excited about Jason's Deli type service at lunch at Lemaire prices. You don't think a deli would be the epitome of service, food, and vibes. But this place absolutely hits all the three criteria for the Yelp review with 5 starts in each single category. I can't say enough positive things about this place. I was in Richmond over Memorial Day Weekend with two girlfriends and we stopped here twice in 24 hours. I was recommended we check out this place from wine industry professionals, and I could tell my friends were a little suspect. I had to semi-convince them and I'm glad I did. First of all, we got SO incredibly lucky with the weather and we got to enjoy their magical patio. I feel like it's such a high-end place even though it's counter order and self service, and that's because of the service. The staff let me try wines, secure bottles when they weren't technically for bottle sales, and they brought me out hot sauce and sauerkraut (I saw someone else ask and did the same). The food here is amazing, the side salad with kale and watermelon radish had this lovely sesame dressing and their chicken schnitzel sandwich despite being fried was lovely. The highlight is the latke, I've never had one that was so crispy and fluffy and not oily. My friend actually ordered it twice. The Matzo Ball soup is also good - the broth is definitely flavorful and I did appreciate the size of the matzo. If you're a local, I'm so jealous, and if you're visiting, do not sleep on this amazing institution in the fan district. They do have a main seating area by the ordering counter, patio (but we're about to be in HOT summer) and a third large covered indoor dining area. I pass this place all the time on my bike rides and I decided to finally give it a try and I was definitely satisfied. I ended up getting the Tony probably one of the best sandwiches I've had in a while. It was seasoned really well and packed with a lot of flavor. They also have a good selection of wines that you can choose from which I was really excited to try. We went pretty early and the only thing to consider is the parking because of the location it can get a little tight/crowded so that's something to keep in mind. Richmond has these series of restaurants that feel like the cool kid group of restaurants. Susie's is on that unofficial list for me. My first time visiting was for their New Year's party. Bedspread Radio is one of my favorite DJ Duos in RVA and they were playing the new year show. Susie's is the ideal party venue. In my opinion, every incredible party venue has a bumping dance floor, a casual bar space, and an outdoor space with seating. Susie's has all of this and the vibe to match. I feel like I'm constantly keeping my eyes open for other events they have. I highly recommend going when they have music of any kind. I recently went for lunch with a friend and it was really yummy. You order up front and take a food number. We came around the lunch rush, so food took a really long time to come out. Thankfully, we weren't in too much of a rush that day. My friend ordered the Phillip sandwich which came out about 10 minute before my dish. There were a nice amount of vegetarian options for her. I got the Sharona. I loved the levantine ingredients they offered in their food! Parking can be a bit tougher to find on certain days, but it shouldn't take too long! They have a few gender neutral single stall bathrooms inside. They also offer a good variety of wines here. On new year's I was able to order a glass of orange wine. It's a huge space with lots of seating. I love the feeling of three different spaces within one. I highly recommend checking Susie's out for yummy food and great music events. read more

This spot is too cute. The tile inside and the patio are so lovely. Also, the servers are equally wonderful. The first time I went the wait was loooooong. It was just over an hour to get our food after ordering. It was a bustling that Sunday at lunch. Second time was a Saturday lunch and there were maybe about 5 other full tables. We got our food within 15 minutes. So FYI, if it's packed expect a long wait. Although, it's worth it. As for the food, let me start off with whenever I see a reuben on the menu - I'm getting the reuben. It's awesome. The sauerkraut to meat ratio was perfect. Came on a Friday at 6pm - it was busy but still plenty of seating available. I ordered the pastrami Reuben which was AMAZING. It's huge and can easily be split between two people. My husband got the Tony and said it was really good, only minor complaint is he wished there was slightly more meat but besides that everything was incredible. Came to Richmond for the weekend and ended up at Susie's TWICE because it was that good. My two friends and I came here for lunch after checking out the museum of fine art and Frida collection. We had amazing weather and so we were able to sit outside on the patio. We came in and ordered from the counter and the person taking our order was so helpful with both recommendations, but also allowed us to taste a few different wines before deciding what we wanted! I tried one of their orange wines and a pet nat, and both were awesome. I ordered the Rachel (turkey, swiss on rye) with a side salad and it was awesome! We also shared the latkes and they were particularly great. When I came back the following day, I was really craving the matzo ball soup, and it did not disappoint! Ok. Now that I have eaten here 3 separate times I honestly can say that the food, the drinks and the setting are all fabulous. Growing up in NY, Jewish deli food was something I truly enjoyed. The potato latkes here immediately brought back fond memories. My favorite sandwich so far is the Rachel. That may change when I try the others. Growing up in Cleveland, I missed my hometown Jewish deli's - and this one brought me back home. The potato latkes were deliciously authentic and felt homemade - and the schnitzel and brisket sandwiches each packed a different kind of punch. The juicy-ness of the brisket and the perfect char on the toast for the schnitzel... ugh it was all delicious. I'll be going here for years to come. My roasted cauliflower sandwich (with arugula, whipped feta and pistachio pesto on challah bread) was so soggy that I couldn't pick it up to eat it.
