My previous review two years ago was two stars following the third time we had an incorrect order. After a year away, We recently gave it another try... Got home and opened our Pho and there was no herbs/vegetables other than sliced onion. No basil at all. My wife's dish was also missing key ingredients. We called and they said it must have been a mistake, so I went back to get it, and that's when they admitted they didn't put it in because they were running low and reserve it for those eating in house?! At no time did they notify us that our order was being changed... not during ordering, not during pickup, not when we were tipping them or when we called in later. I found them completely dishonest about the whole situation. I totally get that restaurants can run out of things, but you don't lie about it in the hope that take out orders want bother to follow up. Dishonest places like this is why people don't want to tip in advance. I am done with this place. read more

My companion had the meatball pho, & took home leftovers due to generous regular serving. the spring rolls with peanut sauce were delightfully crunchy! A chocolate brownie cookie, plant based, topped off our meal. Service was prompt and helpful. Eclectic decor & ambiance. I ordered a fried tofu bahn mi sandwich to go, for dinner later. First impressions: limited seating available and no designated waiting area, so if you're waiting for a table, you have to awkwardly stand in the middle of the restaurant. Been coming here since they opened. Owner is super friendly and the food is always good. I love the Vegan pho! There's a bartender (name starts with H) who is a bit much, singing loudly along with the music, which is not what I come here for. Maybe less singing so my lunch experience doesn't feel like karaoke. Also, his stocking cap says "CUNT", which doesn't personally offend me, but isn't appropriate. It is a little out of the way since I live in Moseley, but went because my son and I wanted Pho, and this place was open later than all other Pho restaurants in the RVA region. Walked past it enough times and had it on my list long enough - one major downside is getting a table here is tough, super small interior with limited seating options especially for big parties but delicious and worth the wait if you're willing! The Spring Roll appetizer was delicious - I would be lying if I said I didn't literally take a spoon to the sauce bowl after and eat it alone in all its glory. The Regular Chicken Pho was pretty solid - be warned if you order the large bowl, as they are truly ENORMOUS! I'm sorry I had not been here earlier. My sister recommended we meet up for dinner and our table grew to double the number with out of town family visiting. That said, staff was super accommodating and so pleasant. Throughout the meal the aromas of the spices and cooking filled the restaurant. I guess with the number of Vietnamese restaurants we have in the greater RVA area I wasn't expecting one of my favorites to be nestled in Carytown. One of the top Vietnamese in Richmond. the food is pretty authentic. it might be hard to find parking becasue it's near the campus on Cary st. The chicken wing app comes in four pieces , good flavor but it would be great if they have some flavor options to add on such as spicy. the combination pho has good amount of meat and flavor is really good. if you are hungry you can get the big bowl but i think standard bowl is enough for one person if you order appetizers . After being in RVA from the SF Bay Area for almost 2 weeks, I had a strong craving for something hearty and warm, and pho sounded great to hit the spot. Going forward, my review will be biased since I'm from CA and I've had loads of pho from San Jose. Pho Luca's is located in Carytown next to lots of small restaurants and shops. We came during happy hour and was able to get $2 off cocktails and free refills on mocktails. Also I love how they have a drink named after Iroh from ATLA! We ordered spring rolls and 2 regular sized pho dac viet bowls. Spring rolls were great and fresh! Unfortunately I found the pho to be very mid. The portions were very skimpy, the meat slices and cuts were great but the noodle portion was SO small that we finished our bowls within minutes. I was still hungry after eating my bowl. :/ the broth was okay, but it was also very dark and tasted a bit off. I was pretty disappointed to see that they didn't include tripe with pho dac biet. It did hit the spot but I felt like something was missing. I was mostly upset how it costed $14 for a regular bowl and how the portions were so stingy. Drinks were great, honestly I would just come here for the happy hour. I ordered the Thaichata, it's Thai tea with rumchata added and it was delicious! Same very little amount of noodle between regular and large size. Shockingly little amount of noodle where I can scoop everything up in 1 shot with the chopsticks. Taste: oh boy, proper pho broth is an art. Chef needs to review his recipe. Way too much star anise is an offense to the palate and nose. Not enough cinnamon will not make your broth sing either. Conclusion: taste is imbalance, strong star anise fragrance, broth too dark as if it was cooked with the lid closed. Possibly top 3 worst pho I have ever eaten in my life. This was my first time going to Pho Luca's, and I ordered takeout food. If you order takeout on a Saturday night, it's not surprising that it was a little delayed--and it was late, by about 15 minutes. The small restaurant is quite bustling when I arrived to pick up my order. (It has a pleasant, energetic vibe that seems to appeal to a lot of people.) The servers were friendly but seemed a little overwhelmed; it looked like they might have been short-staffed. While I waited, one person seemed to be responsible for almost everything--the bar, taking in-person takeout orders, serving tables, greeting new customers, etc. Although he seemed capable and downright heroic, it seemed like too much for one guy. I think that my food must have been sitting on a shelf in the back for a while. Once I got it back to my nearby home, I found everything that had been hot was lukewarm. That I could handle, but the quality of the food was unimpressive. I understand that a bowl of pho ideally is served piping hot in the restaurant. Even so, putting my pho together and reheating it in the microwave (I had the pho chicken) was almost as depressing as cooking up ramen from a packet. There were a few pieces of chicken, a dab of hoisin, a sticky glob of overdone noodles, a few scallions and onions, and a couple of stems of basil leaves. The broth tasted decent but was not especially flavorful. My partner's began vermicelli bowl was not much better. Again, the noodles were sticky and the hot parts were not as hot and fresh as they could have been. I have yet to find good pho in Richmond. Perhaps I'll have to keep trying. But one thing I've learned for sure--if you're going to get pho, dine in the restaurant. For now, I think I'll keep looking. read more

The restaurant is small and authentic. An eclectic crowd that were in there and was happy to see young people enjoying more than pizza and hamburgers. The food was fresh and authentic full of flavor. The menu is small and to the core of the Vietnamese cuisine. I feel with keeping it simple makes it more crafted to the dishes and not slopped together and thrown on a plate or in a bowl. The choices were fine and refined and it makes it easy to get your Vietnamese fix. Dillyn (spelling) did a great job and was attentive and did her job well. It's hard to mess up pho; I can't find anything to improve this place. FOOD: I had their regular-sized pho -- their best seller! It was delicious and comforting, especially because it was raining outside. We also ordered the fried egg rolls. I'm not a huge fan of the sauce they gave us to dip the egg rolls in, but it wasn't terrible. Their beer options are great too! LOCATION: Quaint, clean, spacious. I think they had 12 tables. The funnest part - they have about 4 TVs in there! While we were there they were playing a movie on the Hallmark channel and the Fresh Prince of Belair! Great service and ambiance. We arrived ahead of time and waited a bit at the bar to be seated since we had a large group which was fine. Our server Evan was very informative and provided everything we needed in a timely manner. He also made sure to make the kitchen aware of my dietary restriction of gluten. This restaurant has THE BEST fresh rolls in Richmond. The peanut sauce takes them to the next level. While a lot of restaurants serve fresh rolls with hoisin sauce or other versions of bland peanut-ish sauces--their sauce is made with real peanuts and has a a kick to it. Great little gem in the heart of Carytown. The service is consistently good and the pho and vermicelli bowls are delicious! I love that they have vegan options and the staff are always eager to suggest something yummy. **The fried tofu in the verm bowls can get pretty chewy, so just ask them to cook it light if this will be a problem. The lemongrass sauce that they use in the bowls is out of this world, though - super flavorful! The atmosphere is very quaint - aka it's really small and tight inside - but just the way it should be because the food is consistently good. read more

One of my favorite restaurants in Richmond! The phô is extremely flavorful, and one of a kind my husband and I come here often for happy hour, lunch, dinner, really for anything!! The chicken nuggets are amazing and highly underrated; they'll remind you of your favorite childhood McDonald's McNuggets, but 10000x better! The fresh spring rolls with shrimp are the best in Richmond, PERIOD. I've tried several and nothing compares. It has layers of fresh basil, they are wrapped perfectly, and the peanut sauce is outstanding. The Luca Banh Mi is one of my favorite things on the menu, the side of phô broth really takes it to the next level. If you haven't been to this hole in the wall in Carytown, you must! Very modern place. Upon entering hip hop music was playing and I saw that there was a bar and bar seating in addition to tables. I could see that the restaurant was trying to appeal to a younger crowd and also non viet people while also having touches of viet culture here and there such as having viet destinations playing on the Tv and framed photos of vietnam which was nice to see. The staff was super friendly and while the menu was small the food hit the spot. There's also happy hour drinks during the set times which is cool. We got pho and it was delicious and tasted very authentic! Perfect for a cold day or if you're sick. I did take a star off however because $19 for a bowl of meatball pho is cut throat. An average bowl in a decent size city elsewhere is around $13 so that was kinda crazy and I think difficult to justify. The meatballs is extra $4 and other bowls are around $16. For this reason we'll probs explore other pho places next time. While the pho was solid I don't think it's $19 worth. read more

10/10 recommend! There are a lot of Pho places in Richmond but this has become my new favorite. The imperial fried rolls were so delicious - perfectly crispy and not overly oily. The chicken was flavorful and not overly cooked and the broth had a great flavor. My husband order the Luca sandwich and the marinade paired with the fresh cucumber was amazing. It was busy but we were seated right away and all the staff were friendly and helpful. Next time we are in Carytown we will definitely stop back in. Perfect for a cold weather lunch. read more

Babe took me here for Mother's Day !!! He brought the boys and I here. I loved the Pho. I got chicken Pho. The boys got chicken strips and fries which were super delicious and chicken pho as well. The Pho was so rich and delicious. It wasn't too thick or too liquidy and bland. It also was over flowing with just vegetables. It had the perfect balance of chicken/beef and veggies. They also had a bar in the back that looked really nice but, we didn't go that time. The waiter was super nice. I had never had Pho before and decided to order takeout this weekend! Pho Luca's online ordering system was super easy. I was intrigued by how Pho would be packaged for takeout- they put the broth in a separate bowl from everything else which worked well to put it all together yourself. I got the Chicken Pho (half white mean half dark meat) and it was delicious! They include all the toppings and the spoon and chopsticks. It was so cozy and perfect for a cold evening! Went here a few years ago when I was new to Vietnamese dishes; It was alright. But went there last weekend now that I'm used to eating Vietnamese dishes- this was amazing !
