I spent a lot of time in Vietnam and I ate a lot of pho! The prices are so fair. The broth both the chicken and the beef are very flavorful and they have several different sizes. You can choose from. As I was perusing some of my original reviews from when I moved here a decade or so ago, I realized what I can only now attribute as a grave mistake. Originally I gave Tay Do a 4 star, but giving it anything less than a 5 is just wrong. -- Food: You can choose between all sorts of pho dishes from beef to chicken, vermicelli, rice dishes, and more. You can also ask for a spicy broth (it's a lemongrass beef base, probably the Bo Bun Hue base?) with any bowl. My personal favorite is the Spicy Chicken pho, and it's no exaggeration to say that I look forward to it every Sunday for brunch. They have a lot of gluten free options for those where this is important. I have celiac and haven't once gotten sick from eating beef and have had lots of beef and chicken bowls. I guess if there's one thing I want to comment on the actual broth is that the non spicy one is a tiny bit less savory than some of the other pho places in Richmond, but the rest of it is so good it's a moot point honestly. The spicy broth does *not* have this problem and is the best. (It is pretty spicy!) -- Service: Denzel, the owner, is great. He's such a chill guy and his customer interactions are genuine and true. If there's anything wrong with anything he'll fix it. He's honestly the best. He knows my partner and I's order as soon as we come in, including all the different variations we sometimes get. -- Atmosphere: [[HIGHLIGHT]]I don't know how to describe it other than to picture a small house that's been made mostly open floor plan, added tables, and decorated with art and wood standups of various Vietnamese locations and people. Pho Tay Do is a hole-in-a-wall restaurant that has an exterior of a blue house but there is a large orange sign underneath the window with the restaurant's name! My friends and I came here for lunch this past Friday. One thing I noticed (and liked) was that they had a large range of pho bowl sizes (kid, medium, large, x-large, etc.). This is great because I now know where to go for a snack if I'm suddenly hungry in between meals (and I'm in the area or something, lol). I ordered a medium sized "No. 4 Pho (Eye of Round Steak, Brisket, Flank, Soft Tendon, Tripe)" which was $8. The portion sizes were pretty small (the bowl was about 7-8 inches in diameter, roughly the size of my hand), so if you're a bigger eater, definitely consider the large or x-large size. Overall, there were a lot of noodles and not enough meat and broth. I think there were less than 6 pieces of meat in my bowl and the broth was pretty bland because the starchiness of the noodles (and there were LOTS) diluted the flavor. There were more noodles than I could consume given the limited amount of broth. There was a good amount of garnish though! The pho was a 3/5 for me, but the service was fantastic. The server was really helpful and enthusiastic which made our experience more lively. One of my friends got the bun bo hue with a side of grilled chicken (which looked and smelled fantastic) so I'd have to give that a try next time.
