If I could give it a 6/5 I would!!!! It was a gloomy day so this was very necessary. Denzel was an awesome host as he cared for everyone in the small dining area. He constantly checked on us and noticed the small things (ex. When we needed to go containers). The food was chef's freaking kisses!!!! A great pho spot! My husband and I were taking a short trip to Richmond, and was craving some Asian food. All that to say, we found this lovely place just a little drive away from the Fan District..it was about a 15 minute drive. It is a small space, but appeared very cozy to me :) We ordered take-out, so didn't wait around long. We ordered A8 and A9 for apps, which are shredded papaya salad with beef, chopped basil, peanuts, and a homemade sweet tangy spicy sauce, along with rice paper rolls with shrimp (summer rolls). We also ordered a pho and a vermicelli bowl. The pho included eye of round steak, flank, fat brisket, soft tendon, tripe. The broth tasted delicious, and not heavy at all! The vermicelli bowl had grilled beef. The beef was tender and well seasoned. Prices are great! I may be used to pricer DC/Nova restaurants, but this place was more than reasonable with their prices. Pho Tay Do is one of the best Pho places in Richmond. The wait staff is friendly and personable. The restaurant itself is so homey and well decorated with great cutouts and art. The Pho is fresh and beefy with amazing aromatics, I find that they normally lean a bit on the sweeter and richer side here than some places. I normally go for the Pho Tai and I have never been disappointed. They also have great Veggie options. The Prices are great considering their x-large bowl costs the same if not less than other stores large bowls. The one big thing to remember is this business is cash only. There is no ATM inside so make sure to come prepared. I've tried all 21 places in Richmond that serve pho and Pho Tay Do is in the Top 3. I think if they had later hours they would easily be #2 for me. I cannot give this restaurant enough stars. I've tried most if not all of the pho spots in Richmond and this one continues to be the best. I've been eating #15 from there for years and amazingly the quality has only gone up. Delicious aromatic broth, not too fatty but with a meaty, star-anise flavor. It's a bit more delicate in my opinion than other pho broths I've tried. Their bbq spring rolls are also MONEY. Buy all of the A6. I personally like it with fish sauce. The best pho in Richmond hands down! Definitely a hole-in-the-wall and mom-and-pop-shop since the iconic "blue house" is hidden behind the bigger pho restaurant Pho Thien Phat. You know the quality of the food is excellent when it's only cash only (like I would give 6 stars). There is limited seating and their parking area is small, but I'm sure people just park on the street since it's located in an inside road. I usually order their combo pho, which I love because it includes meatballs. I often take my pho to-go and it is $10 flat. Around the restaurant, there's a lot of paintings of people, landscapes, and more. The wife of the owner used to make the food, but she passed away from cancer, unfortunately. Now, her daughter took over the business and is now making the food. Which is just as good. She's continuing the legacy of what her parents started. The daughter's husband is helping too, as a server, so that's nice. My recommended dish to get here for an appetizer is the Egg Roll. Always served hot and crunchy. Their pho is really good. The only place that is inexpensive to get Pho, like 6 or 7 dollars only. I have gotten broken rice, spring rolls, and other dishes, but they're not the best compared to other places I've had. A caveat is that you have to come here with cash because they only accept cash for payment. Their customer service is excellent. The waiter is always checking on us frequently. Checking to refill our water and if we're okay or if we want anything else. Overall, it's a small restaurant that has reasonable pricing for great food. Everyone is friendly and seems like they enjoy what they're doing. I like how the business is still running after everything that has happened. This little restaurant exceeded my expectations in terms of food quality. The prices were affordable and definitely worth paying for. Depending on where you sit, it can feel really uncomfortable as it is very cramped. So I would hope you get sat at a table by itself. The restaurant is family owned so there were times that they had to close to put family first. The pho is very authentic and it tastes the same as you'd get it in Vietnam or if my mom were to make it. It's the taste of what I would call being at home. It is my preferred place to go if I carry the cash for it. I've been to Pho Tay Do for many, many years and have never been disappointed with any of their dishes. They are always on point with their food when it comes and consistent in quality and quantity. My go to entree is the rice noodles with pork and shrimp, which is something most other Vietnamese restaurants don't offer. The soup for this dish is perfectly seasoned, light and comforting. Their other dishes (vermicelli, broken rice, etc.) are just as good. Whenever our family hosts house parties, we always bulk order their nem nuong (Vietnamese meatballs) from them. The only downside of this place is that they accept cash only and parking is limited so you'll occasionally have to park on the street.
