This used to be my favorite place for vermicelli but I recently popped in to get lunch to go for a friend and I ordered the V2(chicken vermicelli) and V8(house grill vermicelli that's shrimp, beef and chicken)with the crispy roll. I was so excited to eat that i didn't take pictures here's my disappointment. The meat were not grilled they were either steamed quickly fried and slathered and sauce they were also sliced to the size of the palm of my hand it used to be More bite size and since I got it to go, I had to use my chopsticks to pull it apart and shred the meat to a bite-size piece. There was very little lettuce, no cucumber and no carrot, but there were a couple of huge chunks of raw onion. The fish sauce was very bland. There was no garlic in it. No chili flakes. My best friend's family was in town, and we wanted to grab pho. There's a lot of competition here with very similar menus, so we judge the best place off the broth. Let me tell you, this is seriously the best pho I've had in RVA. The broth is so much more elevated than the other places I've been. You can actually smell and taste the spices, the richness of it. Their grilled meat dishes are excellent, one of the best I've had! Succulent, flavorful and savory with a hint of sweetness. I have tried their lemongrass pork, shrimp and they are delicious. Most of the dishes come with broken rice, lettuce, pickled radish and carrot, cucumber and fish sauce. I do wish the portions were a little bigger, but as a whole we normally feel satisfied after the meal. I have tried their Pho Tai before, and it was ok, not the most flavorful, but not as good as their grilled meat dishes. I was there about 25 minutes and left without eating. Not sure what happened. They were definitely off their game. There were two people waiting for a table in front of me. They got seated within 5 minutes. Another table opened up near the door, but I didn't want to sit there because it was freezing so someone else took it. I haven't been to this restaurant in the longest time, and there's a lot of change that have happened. I remember the light fixture used to be in red and blue. I'm glad it's not there anymore. I was very disappointed in this broth as it lacked flavor and I can tell there was just way too much MSG in the broth that was overpowering to my taste buds (I'm sensitive with MSG, it makes me super weak and tired instantly so I know.) I like how they gave a lot of noodles, but I definitely wasn't a fan of the pho itself. Now I remembered why I haven't visited this restaurant in awhile and I probably won't again because there's many great ones out there that are not too far from here. The grill platter which has always been a favorite was lacking a few items: they left out the beef and onion rolls, there was no basil, carrot or lettuce and only two small slices of cucumber. Had some Bbq pork rolls but those were gone before I could snap a picture. Overall it's a nice environment and friendly staff and good food. One of my go to places for pho in Richmond. The broth is amazing. Rich flavor, they give plenty of noodles and protein to go with the broth. On my never ending quest to try all the pho in Richmond, my fiancee and I ended up eating at Vietnam 1 tonight. There were some highs and lows of the meal, but all in all it was pretty good. Note that my review is based mostly on the pho, so if Vietnam 1 has the best BBQ plates and other dishes, I apologize in advance for tarnishing the star rating. --Food: I ordered the Pho Tai Chin (beef pho with steak and well done brisket) and a Salty Plum drink. My fiancee got the Com Thit Nuong (BBQ pork on broken rice). -Salty Plum: I'll start on a high note. For anyone who hasn't had a salty plum drink before, picture it this way: You just take a drink of water, just to realize that it's salt water from the ocean! But wait! Instead of that gross salty ocean aftertaste, you have a pleasant and slightly fruity plum taste in your mouth. What's this? Small pieces of plum fruit at the bottom as well? Delicious! That's basically how it is. Get it. It's great. -Pho: Vietnam 1's pho comes with all of the normal fixings that you find at other pho places with sriracha and hoisin sauce readily available. The broth was a bit darker but still tasted great and the steak had a nice flavor. The problem I have is that the brisket was super fatty, almost to the point of being "crunchy". I get that brisket is fatty, but the other four places I've had pho in RVA have had non-crunchy brisket. My other problem is that the noodles were all clumped together. They tasted fine, but they almost formed a single entity instead of individual noodles. -BBQ Pork Broken Rice: My fiancee said that this was very good, and it came with a lot of rice, more rice than the others she has tried. --Cost: The above 3 items came to about $18. For the amount of food we got, it seems like a pretty good price. --Atmosphere: The inside of Vietnam 1 is rather plain and spacious. While that might sometimes be a bad thing, it works. The tables are nicely spaced and there are plenty of them. --Service: The staff was nice, food came out quick, and our water was filled before we ran out. No complaints. --Overall: Don't get me wrong, Vietnam 1 was still good. If I were to come here again and get pho I'd skip the brisket as the chewy and crunchy fat was really offputting. The clumpy noodles weren't my favorite either, but at least they tasted good. All in all it wasn't bad, but with all the other pho options in RVA, there are a handful of other places I'd go first. read more

Pho So 1 has always been my go to so I might have been comparing the two while I was eating but good pho. The broth lacked a little flavor. It tasted mostly like the basil and cilantro they sprinkled on, but I liked it. It was the perfect noodle to broth ratio. The crispy rolls weren't as good as I had expected. I had huge chucks of carrots in mine. The vegetarian crispy rolls had a really weird flavor, I would definitely get the egg rolls instead of veggie! I stopped going to Pho So 1 because of the dirtiness, but Vietnam 1 visibly looked really clean, aside from the floor not being swept, and well decorated.
