And they should never be made to feel ashamed of who they are or how they communicate. A person in a position of authority should know that yelling at, belittling, or shaming an autistic employee is not an appropriate way to handle a workplace conflict. There should have been an effort to communicate with her in a way she could understand and to address the actual workplace issue--not attack the way she communicates. My niece deserves to be treated with dignity and respect just like every other employee. I am posting this because this kind of treatment should NOT be normalized or swept under the rug. If a business hires an autistic person, then that person deserves to be treated like a human being--not shamed for being autistic.
