Instead of trying to understand how an autistic employee communicates, she was berated and shamed because she does not communicate the way a "normal" person does. Let that sink in. She is autistic. She communicates differently. That is not something she should ever have to be humiliated for. Autistic people are not broken. They are not stupid. They are not incapable of working. And they should never be made to feel ashamed of who they are or how they communicate. A person in a position of authority should know that yelling at, belittling, or shaming an autistic employee is not an appropriate way to handle a workplace conflict. There should have been an effort to communicate with her in a way she could understand and to address the actual workplace issue--not attack the way she communicates. My niece deserves to be treated with dignity and respect just like every other employee. I am posting this because this kind of treatment should NOT be normalized or swept under the rug. If a business hires an autistic person, then that person deserves to be treated like a human being--not shamed for being autistic. I love my niece, I believe in her, and I will absolutely stand up for her when someone makes her feel like there is something wrong with her simply because she is different. There is nothing wrong with communicating differently. There is something very wrong with making someone feel ashamed for it.
