Dropped in on their opening day at the new location. It was a soft opening and the line was 6 or 8 people. Many of the usual offerings from the original location were already sold out early in the morning (alas, out of chocolate dipped doughnuts!) but the brownies and the glazed doughnuts were as heavenly as ever! I could see the crew finishing up a lot of additional baked goods in the back, so I am sure customers who followed me that day were happy as well. My family has always been very pleased with all the baked goods we've brought home. They have most of the baked goods you might expect from a bakery. I was introduced to Westhampton through my job as we were looking to pick up donuts for some of our top refers and I'm glad I got the chance to check this place out. Many of great options besides donuts (which were really good by the way) a-lot of danishes, cakes and pies... really, anything you could be craving honestly. Everything looked fresh and thoughtfully made. The shop has a homey feel to it and there's a lot of charm, it's clear they take pride in their work. Definitely has that mom-and-pop vibe, they're so nice in the shop and will make sure you're taken care of. I'm really happy I was introduced to it. This is my partner's favorite bakery. He grew up going here so it's filled with warm memories for him. His favorite things to get are fudgies and butter stars. He also always raves about how incredible the donuts are when they're available. I would personally give this bakery 3.5 stars. Westhampton Bakery has classic American sweet baked goods. What I mean by that is they feel very sugar heavy/based. Which sounds silly because all baked good are sugar based, but there is something extra sweet about them. Although I wouldn't seek it out on my own, whenever he does get the fudgies and butter stars I do devour quite a few. I think the fudgies are my favorite of the bunch. There isn't any seating inside so it's a grab and go kind of spot. The bakers/cashiers here are kind. It's a very cute and old timey bakery that I enjoy going to mostly because of the smile it brings on my partner's face. read more

My mom was visiting Richmond for my birthday weekend (also known as Memorial Day Weekend) and kept asking about area bakeries to check out. I had heard incredible feedback about Westhampton Pastry Shop (and had even sampled some in the past) but never got around to visiting. It turned out to be the perfect occasion to get acquainted with a Richmond sweet-tooth institution. What I imagined would be a quick stop was easily more like half an hour. I think my mom asked about half the pastries in the case. I settled on a blueberry danish and a pack of cinnamon buns. My mom splurged on a birthday pound cake (which they personalized on the spot for no extra charge) plus an array of cookies. Let's just say: If they had stock, I'd be throwing my money at it. They're doing everything right as a bakery, and I'm happy the bakery isn't in downtown Richmond, or I'd be packing on the pounds. This is an incredible little pastry shop that's been here for as long as I can remember. My mother got her wedding cake 30+ years ago. Whenever I'm in town I have to stop in for a big box of goodies. Melt-aways the perfect way to start any day. The pies are amazing.. choc chess or lemon chess.. the donuts are delicious. Their chocolate ganache covered items are my favorite by far. If you haven't had a donut, almond cookie, melt away or the coffee cakes you don't know what you have been missing! My family has been here for generations and we still continue to come to this bakery for special events. I recently picked up pastries and cookies for Christmas and the line was out of the door. My mom told me that I needed to arrive and pick up the order between 8:30-9:30, it was already paid for so I shouldn't have any problem. I had to wait for 40 minutes! While it was worth waiting for, I don't understand why they wouldn't have a line for paid pick up and others who were placing orders. I took a number and waited, everyone was having a pretty good time and it made things go by faster. People would cheer like they got called down for the prices right when their number got called. It was Christmas Eve so we were all in pretty good spirits, but something has to change in order to expedite during the busy periods. I don't know if I will volunteer to pick up next years Christmas order. Might have to designate my brother or save this order for another time when it's not so busy. read more

I hate to leave negative reviews but dear god avoid this place. Rudest, most unprofessional people (well, person) I've ever interacted with -- and I lived in New York City for a decade. My fiancé and I went into the shop to inquire about wedding desserts: a small cutting cake, plus sheet cakes for the guests. Their "wedding coordinator" Rachel had a complete attitude problem for no reason from the moment we met eyes. We'd already interacted with her (politely, of course) over email and she told us to come to the shop in person to place our order, but for some reason she couldn't deign to talk to us herself that day. She rushed around in the background, acting exasperated and aggressive, while Diane, an actually kind lady who works the counter, walked us through our options. We asked if we should place the order right then and there, but she encouraged us to go home and talk it over with our families, and to then come back next week to finalize our order. That's what we did. My fiancé is a teacher and he rushed over to the shop after school, but was told Rachel was mysteriously gone for the day. By the time we got a hold of her, she acted like we were strangers from outer space, frequently talking over my fiancé on the phone. She told us all of sudden they couldn't fulfill our order due to "Easter." (We'd clearly communicated the wedding date from the very first interaction with them and were told they could do it.) Now we have to scramble to find another option. There's just no excuse for this kind of hostility and run-around when all I'm trying to do is hand you money for a service you allegedly provide. Weddings are sensitive occasions; if hot crossed bun orders are a bigger priority for you, just say that from the start? Such weird vibes from start to finish. I'd give Westhampton for four stars for pastries and 2 for service, so I split the difference with three stars. I've only ever had the donuts, but they're quite good. They stick to the classics with only two options: glazed and glazed with chocolate frosting. They're all different shapes and sizes, so you can tell they're not made in a factory. The cake is dense, moist, and chewy, but it did have a strong yeast flavor that reminded me more of bread than a donut. The glaze is sticky and very sweet. Overall, a very satisfying little treat, especially at half price after noon! Service is extremely hit or miss. Some of the workers are very sweet and helpful. Others will glare at you in silence as if you've barged into their home uninvited. I really expected some crappy service here after reading the reviews. However, I had a fine time. These are not bubbly 18 year olds, the women who work here are actual bakers and while they were very polite and great with service, they don't appear to be the kind of women who will tolerate your snowflake shenanigans. Just show up, choose from what they have, and enjoy the deliciousness. Stop being so dramatic. It's desserts, people. The yeast donuts were spectacular and I didn't even eat mine until this evening. The eclairs were amazing and HUGE. I got six cinnamon rolls, an almond bar, and two enormous eclairs for about $14. Can't beat that with a stick. They also sampled out butterstar cookies and sent us on our way with two free yeast donuts because it was our first time in. We will absolutely be back, even though it's a pretty big drive for us. The first time I stopped here was after finding out the hard way that Shyndigz had moved to a new location and I needed a quick birthday cake for my nephew who was coming over later and did not have time to drive down into the Fan. So I popped into WPS. I found a nice selection of cakes and other desserts from which to choose. I opted of a beautiful chocolate cake with a heavy caramel frosting that would be sure to please Nephew and his little friend after an afternoon of birthday go-karting. Best of all was how reasonably priced the cake was. For less than $10, Aunt Liz was quite the hit with the birthday boy. I have since been back a couple of times to pick up a miscellaneous dessert here and there, such as a cream cheese coffee cake or ice box chocolate pie. I've come here on different occasions and at different times. The first time I ordered the cheese danish which had the lingering flavor of artificial extracts. Not good at all. The following times I've only ordered the glazed yeast doughnut which has been great every time. The 3-star rating is for the Danish but also the consistently bad service. Every time I've gone in I've been treated like an inconvenience and not a valued customer. I've given them several chances but the staff never cracks a smile, they seem irritated by your order and never offer thanks. For me, service makes or breaks an experience. Their yummy doughnuts are truly overshadowed by their rudeness. I now frequent sugar shack. They are nicer and have more locations. Take your doughnut business there. Holy Glaze! So Dominic told me about this spot and then he reminded to try this place. Point taken and I am very glad I listened to him (mad that it took me so long). They do glaze donuts and they do them right! I got their traditional glaze and their glaze that also got a healthy topping of chocolate on top of it. First the traditional glaze, the donut dough itself was beautifully done - fluffy, sweet, doughy and had just all that goodness you want in a donut dough. I only tried the glazed donut and the chocolated iced glazed donut so based entirely on those I'd say if you are nearby it's worth a stop but don't go out of your way to get here for just donuts. The glazed donut was the better of the two but had an unidentifiable sweetness that didn't resemble anything I've had before. A bit fruity in a way? Weird, not great, not bad. The chocolate donut tasted exactly like a Krispey Kreme or Dunkin Donuts chocolate iced donut so I wouldn't recommend this one unless that's your thing. I am such a last minute person haha so I really appreciated how this place has whole cakes (not slices) available for purchase right on the spot. I was invited to my boyfriend's house for dinner and wanted to bring something a little more unique than a Whole Foods cake (nothing against those, they are very tasty, it's just I wanted something less generic and more festive). This place has literally THE best donut in Richmond!! I stopped by yesterday because my boss has always told me to try it out, and I love sweets so I couldn't resist. Inside looks like a typical bakery with displays showcasing their wonderful treats. You could definitely tell this place has been around for a long time, it had an old feeling to it. Part of the Thanksgiving and Holiday tradition in Richmond would be to call Westhampton Pastry Shop and order biscuits for the ham, rolls for the dinner, seasonal pies, cookies and of course the cakes and pastries for which they were known. Another part of the tradition was being told that the maximum number of orders had been taken so try again next year, after Labor Day. But if you ordered early enough and were given a specified time to wait in the long but friendly lines, you would leave the shop with an armload of goodies. Over the years the quality remained consistent to only fall off somewhat before new owners purchased the business. They upgrade the technology and gave the customer faster service. No longer was it quicker to buy a new vehicle than stand through the painstaking and timely task of having the string wrapped and tied around your box of goodies by gnarled fingers. The pastries and other offerings were mostly tweaked but an old stand by, and agood one ..... meltaways ... remain the same. And that is a good thing. I have to take issue however with their cakes. Costs have risen but not the quality. I have had two cakes from there recently, and one in particular, the ambrosia cake, was extremely dry. Nice flavor but two degrees removed from sawdust. As others have posted, I like their donuts. While not the best in Richmond .... Sugar Shack? Country Style? Duck? ... they are tasty if you like a denser donut. It would be nice if they could broaden their repertoire a bit. Overall, the quality of offerings at the Westhampton Pastry Shop is as it always has been, mostly good, if not higher priced. I ordered my wedding cake from here because of the previous reviews and how long the Bakery has been in establishment. I showed the clerk the picture of exactly which cake I wanted from previous pictures the had posted just needed the different colors. I requested to have the cake delivered to my reception location between 1-2pm. Not only did the cake arrive 2 hours early, it was left out in the clear open air on a table in the reception room, no covering at all!(This during a year where Covid is still slightly prevalent ) This cake looked NOTHING LIKE what I showed them in one of there previous posted pictures! It looked like the layers had dropped!! The floral decorations were less than par! I also ordered petit For's which were obviously pre frozen because they all stuck to the paper they were on when my guest began to eat them. Very disappointed with the performance and presentation of my request. The taste of the cake was good but did not taste as good as the samples.. Called the bakery on the next business day but the customer service was very condescending and could have cared less.. For all the money I spent at this establishment, the treatment I received was terrible. Would never recommend this Bakery to anyone! read more

On Tuesday May 4 at 11am, I called Westhampton Pastry Shop and asked if they were making fresh strawberry pies. The young lady said, "Yes." I placed my order to pick up a whole pie on Thursday May 6 at 4:55pm (so I gave 48+ hours notice for a fresh strawberry pie). I paid $22 over the phone with my credit card. When I arrived on time to pick up my pie, the young lady went to the back of the shop and was gone past closing time (about 7-8 minutes). When she came back, she handed me a box that was very cold - felt like a block of ice. I wondered why she didn't give me the fresh strawberry pie that was on the top shelf in the glass pastry shop counter. I didn't have time to question her because it was after 5pm, and I had to go home to prepare for a dinner party we were hosting for fully-vaccinated friends. Three hours later at 8pm, we still could not even cut the pie into slices because it was so frozen solid in the middle. It was terribly embarrassing to serve a tasteless popsicle pie to our guests. The bf loves, loves, loves the donuts from the Westhampton Pastry Shop, but I've had a hard time tasting them myself. They are always sold out! We went the other day and ended up with some sugar cinnamon twists because again they were sold out. The twists were delicious even though not technically "donuts". Why isn't it a donut anyway? Its made out of donut dough and cooked the same way. Anyway, prices were cheap at .60 cents a twist. The apple turnovers in the case looked amazing, but I have to save that for another day. Lately I've been craving donuts more often than I'd like to admit. As a result, I've been exploring some of the local spots known for this sweet treat. As a place boasting the Donut Squad, Westhampton Pastry Shop was, of course, added to my list of must-tries. I couldn't get my ish together in the morning, so I didn't stop in until late afternoon. I know, I know, bad news for baked goods selection. There weren't any traditional donuts left, but I was able to get a glazed twist... so basically a donut in alternative form. It was delicious. I love a good glazed and this one can hang with the best ones I've had. I also decided to try a brownie since I couldn't get a choc iced donut - while I loved the chocolate icing, I didn't love the brownie. It was a little too cakey for my liking; not the moist, chewy brownie style I typically enjoy. The venue itself is reminiscent of an old-school bakery - nothing fancy, just clear cases with classic dessert offerings. Every now and then you can relive an experience from your childhood that ends up being just as good, if not better than when you were a kid. In my formative years I went to high school across from one of the best bakeries to make a donut, Westhampton Bakery. I can remember taking down many donuts on lunch breaks. I've since moved away, but on return visits to Richmond, almost none go without a visit to Westhampton for a donut or a dozen. These are some of the best yeast donuts. They are huge, light, doughy and tasty. What I really love is they put just as much care in the frostings as they do in the dough. The chocolate is my favorite. Thick, sweet, and a deep chocolate taste combined with the perfect dough. Give me a hot cup of tea to go along with my Westhampton donuts and it's the perfect start to my day.
