I came in to inquiry about wedding cake options. While they didn't offer what I was looking for, the ladies were very apologetic and friendly. They even tried to think of places that would have what I was looking for. Everything looked so delicious. I asked if they ever made zucchini bread because my family loves that this time of year. They had just made some and offered me a sample. It was so delicious! I ended up coming back after shipping out a package. It was a nice quiet bakery with a lovely homey feel. You can tell they're popular and sell out quickly but they're not a big high end bakery. Definitely a must try. read more

Oh my gosh, what amazingly delicious donuts! When I walked into the bakery, the smell was intoxicating. It reminded me of a bakery from childhood visits to Utica, New York to Bazan's Bakery. Service is genuinely friendly as were the fellow customers in line with me. Prices are reasonable and all donuts are carefully boxed. Williams Bakery made our daughter's wedding cake June 21, 2025! It was absolutely delicious and the cake was made to the exact design that our daughter wanted. The delivery to the venue was on time and communication throughout the process was wonderful! We enjoyed the cake tasting experience and Fran took charge of the whole project. The star of this bakery is the spice bars. We've been getting them here for years and if you don't live near Mechanicsville, they are worth the drive. The other goodies are yummy too, breads, coffee cakes, donuts, pastries. The gingerbread cookies are delish. The also take special orders and do wedding cakes! Let' just say I wasn't impressed with my glazed donut or my cream cheese danish. Their donuts are yeast filled donuts which are typically my favorite if I'm craving sweet dishes. But I just really wasn't impressed with this bakery although I've heard good things in regards to this place. I wish the cream cheese danish had more cream cheese less bread, the donut had more glaze. But those are my preferences. I would most likely not revisit, because I don't think this is my style of bakery when it comes to donuts. read more

Don't sleep on Williams Bakery. It is unassuming. It is old school. It's even a little bit country. But it's good. So good, in fact, that I chose them to make my wedding cake. Besides the wedding cake, I have bought plenty other things from here, so that's what this review is about. My favorite things from Williams Bakery? Coconut cream pie and the cakes! My dad grew up in Mechanicsville so he introduced our family to this bakery a while ago. I usually hate coconut flavored things, but I have always loved this pie. There's something special about it that I just can't get enough of. It's so good that that's all we'd ever gotten from there... until recently. My mom and I went to a wedding expo shortly after I got engaged and tasted the cake samples at the Williams Bakery table. It was a transformational experience. I consider myself a cake connoisseur and it was some of the best cake that I'd ever had. I entered their contest that day to get $50 off of a wedding cake and lo and behold, I won! From then until now, I have bought their individual cake slices and they are just as delicious as the cakes that I had at the expo. I love the almond and lemon pound cake flavors! The flavors in their cakes are so pronounced and the icing is perfect. I can't even explain it but they definitely add something to their buttercream that must be a secret ingredient. This was actually my second visit. My first visit was about 2 weeks ago. I live about 60 miles away but was in the area for a doctors appointment. I stopped and picked up a cheese Danish (which was good but nothing remarkable) and a cherry turnover. I was staring at the menu to see that they had my favorite dessert, an individual sized pineapple upside down cake. I was told that they didn't have any made but if I called ahead next time they would make sure they had them. Well today was the next day. I called the day before to make sure I would be able to get the cake. I told the employee that I would be there sometime after 9. I was told no problem they would have them. Well I showed up today and no pineapple upside down cake. I was so disappointed. The cashier told me that try would be ready sometime in the afternoon. However I wasn't going to be staying in the area for several hours just to wait for it. For today's visit I settled on a cheese Danish again and a cream horn for the boyfriend. The cheese Danish was good but like I said nothing remarkable. I don't care for cream horns so I didn't try it. Excellent sticky buns (get the ring!) and super nice people in this bakery. I was very impressed by their selection, especially after visiting a couple of newer, fancier bakeries in the area. They also had several different pies that looked amazing. We try to frequent local businesses and we have stopped in before to get a cookie for our son in our walks downtown. The staff seemed a little rude and the place a little dated, but we tried to think of it as "charming" and "local flavor". However, I vowed never to return when we called them last fall for a NATIONAL charity event, to donate a fresh or even DAY OLD baked good for a cakewalk or for treats for children attending the event. We called over 100 businesses in Mechanicsville, large (Kroger/Food Lion) to small and all said YES to donate either food, gift cards, items for our fundraiser, services. All except Williams Bakery. They said NO. I got the run around, then had to make a formal request, fax in a letter from the national sponsor. But, despite it being weeks in advance, they told me they limit what they donate and since I hadn't asked far enough in advance, they had nothing for me. This was not only a local business, owned locally, which should have LIMITED BUREAUCRACY, but a actual neighbor within SIGHT distance to the location hosting the charity event. They couldn't make an exception to their own rules? I am not going to be loyal or even give one cent of business to a SMALL, LOCAL company who doesn't act like a small, local company to its community. They couldn't even spare a cake or pie that didn't sell, some older cookies? I don't care if they make the best food in the world. I make a point now of telling all my friends, coworkers and other parents not to get your birthday or special occasion cakes or items from William's Bakery. This is a vote with my conscience and wallet, not my palate. If there were a rating of ZERO stars, I would give this to William's Bakery, for thumbing up their nose at their own neighbors and community. read more

We were really excited to get a variety of pastries to take home and try including a whole strawberry layer cake that the woman behind the counter said was fresh and wonderful. We expected to dive into a moist and delicious strawberry cake with maybe even some strawberry in it perhaps? Very, very disappointed. It was so dried out or overcooked it just crumbled when you put a fork to it. No strawberrys, no flavor, just bland. I expected so much more from a bakery. Also bought a breakfast roll which was tasty, a gingerbread man my 4 year old liked, and a cupcake my 7 year old liked. Williams Bakery was more than accommodating when I completely forgot to order a custom cake for a company event. Prior to even thinking about Williams Bakery I went to (and pleaded with) all the big box chains and no one would help me. They all required at least a week's notice. On my way home to break the bad news to my husband I passed Williams Bakery and figured what did I have to loose. I was greeted promptly and after telling them my story I was informed that I was in luck as the baker was there and could have the custom cake ready by 2pm that afternoon. (This was at 11am.) Went there at 5:01pm on Saturday, the front door was open and there was a customer and two clerks working. One clerk turned angrily to the other and said loudly "I though you locked the door!" She then turned to us and said they were closed. We were one minute late! And why would you turn away a customer at that point? Especially when you sell wares that are perishable! Needless to say you lost what could have been a regular customer as I have to drive every week to Whole Foods for a loaf of bread and a half dozen cookies. Too bad for you. read more

Customer service is abhorrent to say the least, possibly due to being severely under paid and under appreciated, because they all look like they couldn't stand to be there another minute and act gun shy like they are being spied on, whatever is going on in there certainly appears to be creating an unhealthy and uncomfortable work environment. Almost feel sorry for those working at the counter.
