At their soft opening over the weekend, I sampled just about everything they had to offer. Not only are the sweet tears gorgeous to look at, they are also ridiculously delicious. Of the three cookie choices, the dark chocolate chip cookie with sea salt was my favorite. Rich, buttery, with the perfect balance of salt, sweet, and semi-bitter dark chocolate. Perfectly crunchy edges with a soft, chewy center. The decadent Death by Chocolate brownie was also a knockout. I'm still trying to understand what voodoo magic was used to create the perfectly crisp edges and the sublimely moist, chewy center! While delectable by itself, I fully intend to go back for more to make a brownie sundae next time I need to eat my feelings. At the suggestion of one of the kiddos behind the counter, I opted for the carrot cake over the berry pie. Hard to go wrong here with this classic cake and it definitely did not disappoint. It's on par with any southern grandma's cake but only better! Pies and Cakes also does custom orders with advanced notice! Prior to the brick and mortar, we ordered cakes for several special occasions that were always as beautifully decorated as they were tasty! And as if all this weren't enough, they will have bi-monthly pizza pop ups featuring their very own homemade sourdough! We arrived inside of the store on time and noticed that the woman who runs the store was dealing with a frustrated customer. The customer proceeded to ask us (my mom and I) how do we feel about the cake that was prepared for a relative's 50th. We said it looked nice. However, there were water stains that destroyed the overall photo that was printed for the cake. She requested a re-print from the worker/woman and we waited for about 10 minutes then asked how long before our cupcakes were ready. She stated "about 10 more minutes" then she proceed to yell to another worker in the back. I'm unsure what was said because I don't understand Spanish that well. A few moments later, the cupcakes were made. ** We requested pink cupcakes with glitter in the shape of an L. Super cute! However, once we served the cupcakes to the guests at the event.. we noticed the disappointment on everyone's faces. Including mine. I describe the taste as cardboard and another guest described it as metal. The taste was awful. My little sister was so embarrassed on her 14th birthday! My mom returned the box of cupcakes with no request of a refund, only a complaint. We wanted them to know they tasted awful and we wanted them to dispose of them so they could see they were not enjoyed. Their excuse was that "pink icing tastes like that and it was the glitter".. either way, there was no resolve. Very sad because this place came highly recommended and I believe they successfully did cake in the past. FYI, the cake portion of the cupcake was so good and moist but the icing destroyed the entire cupcake. We hoped for resolve but I guess we wasted money. Honest review. Laura was great to work with designing a custom cake that was perfect for our wedding. She was flexible in having a cake with multiple flavors and making adjustments (like the request for fresh fruit in between each layer). The cake was beautiful, but what was even more amazing was that the cake tasted just as good as it looked. Guest after guest came up to us during the wedding and after the wedding to tell us it was the BEST CAKE THEY HAD EVER EATEN IN THEIR LIVES. Not just the best wedding cake, but the best cake EVER. I needed some pastries for a teacher appreciation thing at my kids school so we decided to go with her homemade pop tarts. Although I love everything I have ever tasted that she makes, her pop tarts are super unique. And they are DELICIOUS. I've now tried strawberry, blueberry, and chocolate and they are all phenomenal. We were able to schedule an order to pickup about a week later, and she is so nice about being willing to make an assortment of flavors, and even packaging her new "pecan pie" ones separately, just in case anyone has an allergy. Love it! Little things like that go a long way in my book as far as service goes. The shop is small, but very cute. I love how woodsy and earthy everything looks. Her cake stands are round slices of wood and she has cute earthy decor all around. She was super busy, preparing for the pecan festival the day we were in, so the cases were empty but she was happy to tell us all about the things she had available in the back still.
