I live in Ridgewood and I saw this place pop up and it looked good. I stopped in here for dinner with my girlfriend and we were really disappointed with the service and the food. We ordered the chicken choila, the masala wings, and the masala fries. The food took over 30 minutes to arrive and when it did, everything was cold. I didn't even receive the order of the fries and the waitress didn't even remember that we ordered it. The portions are really small and for $6 dollars, you only get 4 wings. I will say the flavors are good but again everything was cold and we couldn't really enjoy the food. I'm not sure if I would go back because the prices don't match the quality and the quantity of food that you order. I know that this was a soft opening for them but I don't think I will come back. read more

This place is the best new addition to the neighborhood yet! The people who run it also run Nepalese Indian Restaurant down the street. Amazing people who will make you feel right at home. Had the lentil pancakes with a fried egg on top, potatoes, and soup. The portions were sufficient and the spice added a little kick without being overpowering. One of my favorite restaurant!!! I have actually never been to the restaurant itself but regularly get delivered at home. The food is incredibly flavorful and subtle - and potentially spicy (which I personally love) so keep this in mind if you are sensitive to spicy food - I tried almost every dish in the menu and never got disappointed. Portions are generous and well packed for delivery. Most dishes come with a great number of delicious homemade condiments too. I love Tibetan and Nepalese food but Jackson Heights is quite a trip from my place so I was really happy to find "While In Kathmandu" which is actually even better than a lot of places I used to go before! read more

I have two suggestions to make the experience even better: 1) the lighting needs to be a little softer and less bright. We were meeting friends last night at this restaurant as they chose it. I have to say that I checked out the menu earlier in the day and didn't have great expectations. When we arrived, our friends were already seated and I noticed that he had a beer poured. To my surprise, they do now have a liquor license ( They need to update their website :-) ) . So again, looking over the menu, we decided we would order some starters and a couple of main courses. The starters was the garlic naan, shrimp momo and chicken sekuwa. Since I am not a big fan of fish, the other three ordered the salmon main course and I ordered the chicken platter. Everything was so tasty that we eventually shared everything. The atmosphere is very quaint ... quiet as in you can have a conversation without having to scream at one another and the service was very good. We almost didn't go because unless you look for a parking spot on Cypress Ave or live in the neighborhood, it's nearly impossible to park your car. I rarely leave 1-2 star reviews, but perhaps this food is not for me. I consider myself quite open to culinary experiences however this one was very underwhelming. I tried their popular goat meat platter that comes with several options on a pan. Their rice is pretty much cereal and the consistency of the goat was like a gummy bear. We found a produce label in the food. The vegetables went unwashed, cooked and no one took the label from the vegetable. Called the manager and all they did was apologize and reduce the price of the bill by 14 dollars, witch I left as tip for the nice table service . Wonder if they clean their food before cooking. My sister wanted to go to Nepali cuisine and I remembered my friend insisting time and again to go to While In Kathmandu. I, my sis n brothers-in-law were in surprise by the taste of nepali food. Being a Nepali and having tried countless Nepali dishes, we could still find the taste of While In Kathmandu unique. We ordered Malekhuko macha (fried fish), aloo sadheko(boiled potatoes seasoned fried), not a taco(taco style but nepali roti with chicken choila), pork momo(dumplings), chicken dumpling , chitwan ko tass(goat fried with sides), khana set(lentil pancakes with sides) and added Kathmandu poppers( jalapenos stuffed peppers) in the end. None of the dishes with similar to other even the sides which was very refreshing. Malekhuko macha came first which even though was deep fried, the inside was juicy. The little sauce on side was tasty enhancing flavor of fish. I have a theory chefs who put much though on sauce must have a better food too. Then came not a taco, the chicken was spiced to give a feeling of Mexican cuisines. What stole the limelight was the taco or should i say roti. Roti had never been to my liking but this roti proved me wrong. I could tell it was not made in simple way. And had that softness just making you want more bite. After first two dishes, it was already in our list of "new best Nepali place". Aloo dish was spiced harmoniously not overwhelming the palate. The food where spices overpower the originality of main ingredients is not to my liking. In this dish, aloo was still aloo. We ordered chiura(beaten rice) to enjoy aloo more. Kathmandu poppers came next our last minute addition. Kathmandu poppers was okay but my sister enjoyed it a lot and we teased her saying her palate has become westernized. Pork and chicken dumplings came next which were juicy. I prepared pork while sister made chicken winner.the sauce used in pork dumpling was mild while chicken had tangy taste. Chitwan ko tass was good. I really enjoyed goat. Khana set was okay but the side dishes took me back to Nepal. The mango chutney took me back to my grandma's kitchen in Nepal. While In Kathmandu should be in your list in you love food. If you enjoys a good setting, this place has cosy rustic vibe. Not the best bar on Seneca Ave, but not the worst. The food is great, would recommend the pork momo. Limited beer and wine selection on the alcoholic beverage menu, which is a letdown. The decor/atmosphere is pretty underwhelming from what you'd expect from more exotic restaurants, but oh well. If you frequent here, they only seem to have two music playlist: Himalayan folk? and 2010s pop, which is always cranked way too loud regardless of how full the place is. The only saving grace is their outdoor space which is a gravel yard with some tables, but it's also not the best in terms of local outdoor bars. Overall, it's worth at least one visit. I came to while in Kathmandu last Sunday with my husband (who is from Nepal) to try it out. The food was very good - that said, it had more Indian flavors than typical Nepali. But we are harsh judges as we live in Jackson heights and just came back from a 6 weeks trip in Nepal. The atmosphere is cute and the service was attentive. We got the fried fish - crispy and yummy but the sauce had so much masala in it and wasn't spicy at all, we asked for hot sauce. Chicken jhol momo was pretty good and very juicy. The goat ko Tass was yummy and the pickle (my favorite) was on point. My glass of cab was really good as well. Overall we liked it but doesn't compare to other Nepali spots in queens. Ok, so right off the bat let me get this out of the way - I'm a professional carnivore. I went in knowing I was going to be having meat of some kind, maybe goat, possibly yak, but definitely a meat based entree. Our host and waiter for the night was Bikash Kharel himself, and he guided us through the menu based on what my wife and I were each looking for. We took his advice and ordered the Aloo appetizer, the Kathmandu Poppers, and the vegetable Jhol Momos, to be followed by the Nepali Alfredo and the Chitwan Ko Taas (a flame charred goat dish - told you I'd be getting some meat). We each settled back into delicious glasses of iced chiya (WIK's deliciously spicy real tea take on traditional chai), and waited for the food to arrive. Now, it was Valentine's Day night and every table was filled, so I was prepared to wait a bit, but the Aloo and Poppers came out of the kitchen quite quickly and hoo boy, they were incredible. the potatoes have a lovely spicy bite, mixing cumin and, unless I'm really off, cardamom with the smokiness of the potatoes and the riproaring bite of these chopped green deadly spicy peppers - which were just right, having enough heat to make you remember what you were eating, but not enough to make you stop. As for the poppers, they are a take on the traditional Jalapeno Popper but they are made from much larger peppers akin to the Italian Frying Pepper and stuffed with a gooey mix of potato and cheese. Lightly battered in an almost tempura-like batter, they are heavenly. Just enough bite and pepper flavor with a cheesy gooey balance and perfectly served with a remarkable chutney on the side. Almost as if they were staging the courses for us, we had barely finished the appetizers when our momos appeared. A silky tomato and spice fueled broth surrounded these delicate little islands of noodley vegetable goodness. I have had dumplings all across the City and these are the tops. Vegetable dumplings are notoriously difficult to do well, as they are often a bit blah once you get down to it - not these. Every bite is an explosion of flavor. Not spicy at all, but complex and tasty, the eight momos in the bowl are just enough for a two person soup course, and the soup that these magic little ecstasy factories float in is a perfect compliment. We sat back and had a little bit of time to digest and chat and I can say, without reservation, that I could eat those three dishes every day for the rest of my life and be perfectly content with it. Now remember, I'm an affirmed, card-carrying meateater. We hadn't had a scrap of meat yet. that's a pretty huge endorsement of the aloo, poppers, and momos. After a brief moment to digest, out came the entrees, and they did not disappoint either. The alfredo is creamy and perfect with a hint of tomato and spice - almost like an alfredo sauce married a tikka masala. Hearty and rich, and served with a side of garlic naan, my wife rapidly found herself entering food coma territory. My Chitwan Ko tass was also spectacular - heady, hearty chunks of goat with a perfect rind of char and spices served with traditional puffed rice and several sides of mixed vegetables and a dried bean reminiscent of the West Indian Fry Channa snack food. Stuffed to the gills, but still hanging on, I opted for dessert and was rewarded with a take on the sel roti - a large rice-flour donut dusted with shaved coconut. Piping hot and gooey, this sweet, almost funnel cake was a perfect way to cap the meal. Next time, I'll be sure to order a hot chiya with it, as I imagine they are a perfect couple. Fooded up sufficiently, we got the check and, hey, it was totally not bad at all! The prices are beyond reasonable for the amount of food you get, and the atmosphere is fun, laid back, and homey with a thatched rood cottage screening off the kitchen and Parliament Funkadelic pumping through the house sound. Word to the wise - they currently only take cash, but there is a conveniently located ATM in the back of the restaurant, so if you forget to bring greenbacks (or like both myself and the Queen of England, just never travel with cash) it's not too big a problem. All told, not only will we definitely be back, but we'll be bringing friends. Maybe in the warmer months so we can take advantage of the back-yard dining space! read more

The chicken empanada thing was quite lovely but that was all I enjoyed. My friends did not like their order, I tried some and it was alright...didn't totally hate it. I gave it only three stars because I would not go back. The pieces of meat were kinda chewy. This might be the way Himalayan food cuisine always is?
