Another stop on my first Jackson Heights food tour. This Nepalese spot offers Nepali foot, Bhutanese food, Tibetan food, and Indian food. The food types are similar but offer different spice/flavor profiles. They have a large section of noodles, soup, and rice. A veggie section with various combos of cauliflower, potatoes, onion, bamboo, blackened peas, mustard greens, and spices. Some of the Indian dishes: paneer butter masala, palak paneer, chicken tikka masala. Some of the appetizers include crispy tofu, fried soybeans, a Nepali snack platter with marinated meat, goat, beef tripe, sliced beef tongue, fried jerky, duck. They also have a momo section. We had their famous chicken lollipops (essentially fried chicken) and it was crispy and spicy (in a good way). We also had sadeko (marinated or tossed) bacon, which was rich and tender. I had one of their Nepali cocktails, which was pleasantly spicy (the chatpata aam, made with tequila, spicy chatpatey syrup, and mango puree). Service was attentive. Inside is cozy, lots of dark wood and colorful flags. They also often have entertainment in the evening, so I would love to return to hear some live music while trying more Nepali cuisine. read more

A bit overrated and overshadowed by the nice ambiance. I may be biased since I've been to Nepal twice and my palate consisted of dal bhat every single day I was there (momos were a luxury on the trek)--which in no way makes me an expert, but the taste and portions were pretty consistently similar among most places. The first time that I came here was about 3 years ago with a few friends and we liked the food - the beef tongue was different and super memorable and the jhol momos were just swimming in flavorful curry. Made me want to come back again. Fast-forward three years later, I feel like things have changed significantly. Or maybe I didn't catch them at their best, but I came with another group of friends and I just felt overall disappointed with the food, as did my friends who were excited to try Himalayan food for the first time. I had the goat dhat bhat and the small amount of meat served in aesthetically pleasing bowls to mask the portion was disappointing--and this was not a lunch special or anything. I mainly got a big bone and realistically got about 2-3 small bites of actual meat, while there was an overwhelming amount of rice and veggies. The momos also tasted like they were pre-made and heated or steamed up again because the dough was definitely a little rough. Overall, this experience was a meh for me. I think it is a social staple for many Nepalese and Tibetans in the area, and just for that. read more

From you enter the door you are greeted by friendly staff. Luckily for me, my party was here and easy to spot. A were a large group celebrating our friends birthday. The place isn't huge but it is a good size and was able to accommodate us. There were many appetizers on the table that were very delish. A hit for me were the seasoned potatoes, Aloo Dum (dry). I ordered the Shogo Ngopa and decided to go with tingmo instead of the white rice. Trying something new! Also ordered a mango lassie. Food came out fresh, warm and delicious. The tingmo reminded me to a steamed bun with out the filling but with layers. Everything was good. Everyone was friendly and kept our water glasses filled. I'll be the first to admit that I am not the most familiar with Nepalese food, but my friend had recommended me this spot so I figured it was worth checking out! Came here on a Saturday around 6 pm with a friend. There were a few folks dining and as the evening went on it definitely got busier, however it seems like there was never an actual wait for a table. The servers were all very friendly and gave recommendations on what to try. Based on their advice we got the following (from favorite to least): - Steamed chicken momo: Ok I am sort of basic listing this first, but it was delicious! 8 steamed momos with a very solid chicken filling, would order again. - Goat Thali: Always fun to get a thali to be able to taste different dishes. A couple of them were a little bit too sour for me personally, but I could tell all the dishes were thoughtfully made - Pork sekuwa: I loved the puffed rice and the spices on the pork, but the pork meat itself was a little too fatty. Again I think this is purely personal taste, and next time I would order it with chicken or beef. All in all, it was a fun way to try out some foods I'm less familiar with and it definitely seemed like a local hangout serving some authentic food. Himalayan Yak Restaurant - Feels Like Home in Jackson Heights As someone who's Nepali, I can never get enough of Nepali food -- and the Himalayan Yak is the kind of restaurant that instantly makes you feel at home. I started with their pani puri special, which was fresh, tangy, and addictive. Then came the star of the night: the thali. Every Nepali person knows the thali is pure nostalgia, and mine (with goat) was perfection -- generous portions, beautifully seasoned, and full of variety so you can try a little bit of everything in one meal. I also couldn't resist ordering a Wai Wai dry noodle chaat -- my ultimate snack obsession -- crunchy, tangy, and spicy in all the right ways. I came here for dinner with a group of friends. The interior was spacious and lovely with colorful artwork, along with sleek layout. There was a serene ambiance to the place. For my drink, I had a Mango Lassi, which had just the right amount of sweetness and thick consistency. It also tasted bright and refreshing. It was difficult to figure out what to order. At first, I was going to try Thali, traditional Nepali combination platter, but I wasn't sold on any of the main meat options. So, I decided to get the Sizzler plate with Lamb. This consisted of noodles and broccoli, fries, and pieces of lamb on a hot plate. I really enjoyed the lamb, which was succulent, juicy, and well seasoned. The noodles were also cooked well, while the fries were nice and crispy. I was able to try some of my friend's Sukuti Thali, which was dried meat. I got to taste both pork and beef. I preferred the pork, but it was a little too tough and salty for me. I enjoyed the garlic naan, which was bubbly, buttery, and full of garlic flavor. Service was solid. Our waitress was friendly, patient and knowledgeable about the menu. Prices were very reasonable. We had a nice evening dining here. While we had enjoyed a lovely dinner here a while ago, we returned here on 8/15/2924 for the 12th annual momo crawl as we did not try the momos on our last visit. Came on a Sunday for lunch right when they opened and we were the only ones there for the entirety of our meal. I think another couple came in near the end, but I hope this place gets more business as I thought it was pretty good! I primarily came because of a Yelp event offering a free chai, but I figured we could make a meal out of it as I don't think I would have tried this place otherwise. I was super glad we did. For 3 ppl we ordered 4 dishes: - blood sausage: this was my first time trying a dish like this and it was my favorite. I loved the texture of the sausage (more grainy because of the blood?) and I thought the flavor was good. It wasn't the others favorite. - chicken lollipop: also a very strong dish, the batter was crispy and the chicken was juicy. It didn't need to be dipped in sauce but the sauce (a sriracha mayo of sorts?) was good as well. - beef fried momo w chili: this was a solid option and while the chili was not spicy, I still liked the sauce. The chili sauce did make it less crispy but it still had a crunch. I actually really liked the addition of onions and peppers to this dish. - Lhasa bokchoy: I thought the menu said it was prepared with spices but it was just sautéed bokchoy with some other veggies, so it was healthy I guess. Don't come here if you're in the mood for tea. I arrived after dinner at 9:30pm and was told the place had no tea left. When the waiter saw my confused face, he said that they usually stop serving tea at 8 or 9. I left disappointed. From what I observed while waiting to be greeted, the service was slow and unwelcoming. There was a lack of ventilation and the air was musky. Came here with my parents for dinner since we wanted them to try momos! The restaurant is nice inside with a homey feel. Our waitress was super attentive. We tried a bunch of dishes including beef momos, chicken momos with johl on the side, lollipop chicken, 2 orders of garlic naan, chicken tikka masala, the Nepalese goat curry dish, and beef chow mein. We came here for the momos and we're honestly a bit disappointed. They weren't as juicy as some of the Momo trucks we tried. No white or hot sauce to drizzle either. I ordered the Thali with chicken and the food came very organized in several containers. Food was very unique and none other that I have tried. Chicken was very flavorful in a broth that I had never tried in my life. I don't really order nepalese food so it was a cool experience to have tried this. It came with rice, daal, mustard green, vegetable curry, papad, and achar. Very fresh and everything went well with the rice. All I did was French the rice in the different broths that the platter came with. LOPSANG, the most unqualified manager! We were a group of 6 people with pre-reservation table on 12/25. The reservation was taken by Lopsang over the phone around 4 pm. During the reservation call I had asked him if Dhido was served at the restaurant to which he had consented. Dhido was our prime concern for the dinner because of which I had to confirm with him in advance. We arrived at the restaurant around 6 pm. We were seated by a server, and we placed orders for the starters. The food was served along with the drinks. I asked the server if there were any musical performances for the evening. The server went to ask her manager about the performance. The server returned to our table, and she informed us that the performance will begin around 8:30 pm. I checked my watch and it was 7 pm then. Suddenly Lopsang, the manager, shows up and rudely speaks to us that the performance will begin only after 8:30 pm and we have long time to wait until then. His attitude was clearly understandable that we must vacate the table asap and we were not allowed to stay until the performance time. While he approached our table, we were drinking beer and whisky, and the starters were just done. Our dinner was yet to be ordered. And this so-called manager, Lopsang, was showing his rude attitude with us. I told him that I was waiting for the server to take our orders for dinner. He rudely asked me what we wanted for dinner. I placed our dinner orders that included Dhido. He abruptly says that Dhido is not served. I reminded him that I had confirmed with him if Dhido is served or not. He had agreed to serve Dhido at the time of making the reservation. Now he rudely claims that he never mentioned about the Dhido, a BIG LIE! (Looks like he wanted to allure the customer to his restaurant, so he LIED to me when asked about Dhido.) He didn't apologize but rather insisted that he never confirmed serving Dhido. His expression was so UNPROFESSIOANL and RUDE as if he was fighting with some strangers in the street. I have never seen a manager like this one! Lopsang has ZERO knowledge of customer service. Earlier there was a couple with a dog who were seated. I informed the manager that DOG is not allowed in the food establishment. (I have a video recording of the DOG being seated which is against the health code of the city law). This manager has no knowledge of the pets that could be seated or not in the food establishment. I WILL NEVER EVER COME TO THIS RESTAURANT AGAIN!! read more

I've tried this spot before and loved it so I decided to stop by again. I was very disappointed by the service and food and quality overall. One of the plates was dirty as was my takeout container. I will not be eating here again. Our group of 3 ordered the Chicken Tikka Masala, Chicken Thenthuk, and Goat Thali along with one order of Chicken Momos and masala chai. We waited about 20 minutes before we received our momos. During this time, our waiter disappeared. Meanwhile, the table next to us was a much larger party that came in after us yet got their appetizers and entrees before we did. I figured it was just because of our order and tried not to let it ruin our experience. The food was disappointing and average, at best. The Chicken Tikka Masala was very mild flavored and almost bland, to the point where I had to add pepper and eat chili for some type of flavor. The Chicken Momos were also ok and not as flavorful as I remembered. The Chicken Thenthuk was interesting but nothing worth gushing over. What really upset me was the added gratuity for our party. I placed a to-go order of momos. While we were waiting, the person picking us up came inside and sat with us to wait for the to-go order. Because he was hungry, we gave him the to-go order to eat and placed another to-go order. While we waited for that order, we ordered another Masala Chai. At the end, we were charged the mandatory 20% gratuity for 4 people even though it was only 3 people who had actually dined in. The person picking us up was eating a to-go order while another to-go order was being made. We paid the bill, tip included, but I won't be going back to this spot and I don't recommend it. Got their chicken thali and it hit the spot. It's Nepali style thali with rice and lots of other things that go with it. There's veggies like greens, bean and potato soup, lentil stew, chicken curry(or protein of your choice), three types of achars: radish one, tomato based one, and a gundruk one I think... not sure of the English word for it. It's delicious and each bite can be different based on what you want to do with it. Also, they asked me if I want more so I assume they do refills like they do in Nepal. Usually you can ask for more rice, achars or veggies, they don't refill the chicken but generally don't mind giving you the gravy in Nepali restaurants. read more

We tried the thentuk (Tibetan style hand pulled noodle soup), which I would definitely recommend. It was a tomato based soup that was quite delicious. Been here on 3 different occasions I have had 2 excellent experiences and one below average experience. My recommendation would be to try the noodles, chilli chicken, the thali (chicken or veg) and the lollipop chicken. I can't stop raving about the lollipop chicken, as its fried to perfection and even the bones are crispy and you can actually bite on it. I did end up eating a bone and now I feel like a true carnivore. Note they were a michelin restaurant, but not sure if they still carry that tag. read more

This was my first time trying a Himalayan/Nepalese restaurant, so I wasn't sure of what exactly to order, but I'm happy with my dishes! We started with mango lassi's, garlic naan, and a goat curry. All were delicious!! The portion for the goat curry was a bit small, but I'd definitely get it again. It paired so well with the naan, and the meat was super tender. We continued with the yak momo and the combo sekuwa. The momos are similar to dumplings. They definitely weren't my favorite because of how thick the skin was, and the meat was a bit dry, but I was super curious to taste yak meat. There wasn't anything special about that. The meats for the sekuwa were delicious! The marinated meats were so tasty, and the crispy rice was such an interesting touch, so that dish was my favorite. Portion wise, it was quite small, though. WE LOVE THIS PLACE. The only downside is that it's all the way in Jackson Heights and we live in the city. Unfortunately, they won't deliver into Manhattan. Food: Whenever we come here we always get the Wai Wai Sandeko. This, in my opinion, is their signature item. I get it spicy and my husband get it's mild. The flavors are so good and well mixed. This time, we also got the cripsy tofu in a sweet and spicy sauce. The tofu was perfectly crisped and the sauce was delicious. We also got a chili potato dish and that was also well flavored. In the past, we've gotten their masala papad and we also loved that dish. I'll be honest and say I wasn't the biggest fan of their momos but everything else I've had here has met expectations or surpassed them. Disclosure: Most of the food items here are on the slightly spicy side so make sure to order mild. Prices: Prices are very reasonable especially for the portion of food. As one of the long standing establishments in the Himalayan / Nepalese / Tibetan scene, Himalayan Yak has always been a popular option with the Jackson Heights crowd. They're among the only restaurants within the cuisine umbrella to offer a complete restaurant experience that includes cocktails and live music. Dimly lit with homey vibes, the interior is modest in space but with a decent amount of seating for all party sizes. On the outside, the place looks like a former Irish bar with a fancy door and like many other places along this stretch of Roosevelt, parking is limited to the street. It is within a couple of blocks of the 74th & Broadway Jackson Heights subway station and is very easy to get to on foot. The food has remained consistent over the years. Folks are keen on their momos, which are solid but won't exceed the ones sold on the street. The thali sets are worthy of ordering every time though I think their beef gyuma, a type of Tibetan blood sausage is among their most underrated items. The yak steak feels like somewhat of a gimmick, but the yak cheese is fun to eat. If wild boar is available, do it. I don't think their Indian options are going to make an impression on too many folks who are used to this cuisine. The paneer makhani or aloo dum aren't going to be quality choices especially for destination outings. When in doubt, stick with Tibetan classics if at all possible. I've always thought highly of their service and think they do a good job overall. The staff is quick about getting orders in / out and do an excellent job of explaining the menu to novices to the cuisine. As a bonus, I'd recommend taking advantage of their generous 20% Yelp check-in (#1) offer. At the end of the day, Himalayan Yak is a fixture in the Jackson Heights dining community. The waiter recommended me that dish and she wasn't wrong. The flavor was there the season was great I highly recommend that dish. There was a nice music band live in the restaurant. We walked in hoping to grab a quick bite after a concert at Citifield and the wait staff was rude and told us they were closed.....even though there were at least 20 people sitting in the restaurant. Had a great time catching up with old friends here- great cuisine/dishes pretty authentic. The ambience was very awesome - amazing music, Jhaal (Nepalese doors) But what really made the night was the two folks taking our orders and serving us. One was a Nepalese guy called Abhishek who was super attentive and almost omnipresent. The other was this lady who is Tibetan called Dechen,, my kid broke a soap dispenser in one of the bathrooms, but she was super sweet about it. Wow. What a great find. We had the aloo dum. Both with gravy and dry. One of the best potato dishes I've had. The flavor was great. Potatoes were cooked to perfection and what a huge portion size! Himalayan Yak is some sort of mega fusion restaurant that serves Tibetan, Nepalese and even some Indian dishes. Most of it is good/tasty, some of it you should skip. Let's start with their cocktails: skip them. They charge a pretty penny for them roughly $12-14 and the one I had, the White Tara, was devoid of any profile whatsoever largely tasting like just rum. If you really want to get alcohol, stick to the beers. The Thali - a Sikh looking platter with some white rice, a chicken curry, some other kind of liquid, still another kind of smaller red liquid that tasted slightly burnt and chinese water spinach. For $15 it's ok. The highlight is the chicken curry in which you just get a little cup of. The rest of the stuff is take it or leave it to me. Shap-ta - a stir fried beef fish that is quite flavorful with a hint of spice. It's reminiscent of a chinese style pepper stir fry. Unfortunately the beef just tastes dry and this dish is an overall miss. Thentuk - a giant bowl of spicy broth with hand peeled noodles and beef slices. This is a highlight! We came here as the Covid restrictions started opening up. We wanted Tibetan food and choose this place for the good reviews and inviting ambience. I've eaten in the neighborhood in the past, and most of the places that I really like have zero ambience. So this was a change of pace. We ordered 2 thali plates, one with Tibetan buckwheat pancakes and chicken curry and one which was more Himalayan I think with a dried beef. Curry. I found the food to be tasty and fresh. This restaurant has a huge menu, and judging from the food that I ordered everything is probably quite good. Especially if you're with a big party, I could see this place being a great choice. My son and I wanted Indian food while strolling around the area. Coming from India I for sure know Indian food and I just had a trip back home so I hardly try any Indian restaurants because there is nothing that tastes like India outside India. But we were pleasantly surprised. First of all service, just one hostess and she was was handling all the tables, all the praise for young lady. And she was courteous and attentive. We ordered Momo as appetizer plus another goat dish. During my last india trips I visit Dharamshala area around my home town for Tibetan food and any one can attest, where there is Dalai Lama and then largest Tibetan population outside Tibet, Tibetan food must be great. Yes it is, but these momo were as good as I get back home in Dharamshala. Just amazing. Lentils and another dish which only I like from my wife's hands was just amazing and felt completely homely. But highlight for me was goat dish and then chicken dish which I tasted from my son's thali. Gentlemen/ladies this is how home cooked food tastes in India and this is how it should be cooked. No extra or any cream, just right amount of spices and then perfect amount of heat. I think I'm going to go tomorrow again for chow mein and few other dishes. And we will be back as and when I'm in nyc. Go eat there, service, ambiance and the food like that you just can't find in any of those manhattan fancy restaurants. read more

The Momos here are the real deal. The chicken was my favorite since it was full of flavor and moist. The beef ones in chili were also excellent with the chili, but I like the taste of the chicken better between the two. The pork fried rice and the shaptak beef is really good together. The taste was also there for the rice and beef sauce was excellent. The beef itself was lacking a little more flavor but the dish in its entirety was delicious. The chicken lollipop was my least favorite as the chicken didn't have a lot of flavor and it was a bit dry for my liking. To be fair, we ordered takeout, so we don't know if it was the same if we dined in, but overall the food was good. read more
